Philadelphia Eagles RG Brandon Brooks to miss 2020 NFL season with torn Achilles

Brandon Brooks to miss 2020 NFL season with torn Achilles

In what can only be described as incredibly heartbreaking news, Ian Rapoport is reporting that Eagles All-Pro right guard Brandon Brooks has suffered a torn Achilles.

Brooks confirmed the news on his Twitter account moments ago.

Brooks played amazing in 2019 and was beaten for just one sack all season and had an overall grade of 92.9 from Pro Football Focus. Brooks’s absence from the Wild Card game against Seattle is a major reason they lost.

Look for Jack Driscoll, Matt Pryor, or Sua Opeta to get the first shot at replacing Brooks. Signing Jason Peters and switching his position isn’t a bad idea either.

Eagles land in the top-5 of list ranking the NFL’s top units in the trenches

Eagles are No. 2 in a ranking of NFL’s top offensive and defensive lines

The NFL is a game predicated on offense and great quarterback play but the one key to every successful team is the talent in the trenches.

The great NFL teams secure a franchise quarterback and then they embark on the process of building the organization from the inside out, fortifying both sides of the line. The Eagles perennially have one of the NFL’s top offensive line units and they have two of the NFL’s top defensive linemen on the roster as well.

NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks recently broke down the top five teams in the league based on their talent in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

Not surprisingly, the Eagles landed at No. 2 on the list.

The Eagles could soar to the top of the NFC behind a talented defensive line that features a diverse collection of playmakers at the point of attack. Fletcher Cox is the marquee name, but his blue-collar teammates (Javon Hargrave, Brandon Graham, and Derek Barnett) also have the capacity to take over games utilizing a committee approach. When the Eagles get that quartet going in the coming season, particularly on obvious passing downs, opposing quarterbacks are going to take a beating in the pocket. Offensively, the Eagles must cope with the loss of Jason Peters, but it is hard to complain with three four-star blockers on the front line. Lane Johnson, Brandon Brooks, and Jason Kelce are not only rock-solid technicians, but they are physical blockers with nasty dispositions. If Andre Dillard can quickly settle in as a first-time starter, the Eagles’ front will pummel opponents with its collective size, strength and athleticism.

The return of a healthy Malik Jackson will only make the group that much more lethal. If Genard Avery, Josh Sweat, and one of the young defensive tackles can take the next step, this group will quickly rise to No. 1 on the list.

Eagles Brandon Brooks among 4 OL with top-10 grade in pass and run blocking since 2016

Eagles Brandon Brooks joins Zack Martin, Marshal Yanda and David DeCastro as the only offensive linemen in the NFL with a top-10 grade in passing and run blocking since 2016

[jwplayer hMwMHocL-ThvAeFxT]

Brandon Brooks can lay claim to being the best player on the Eagles roster and the All-Pro left guard’s stats to suggest that he’s among the best players in the NFL.

There are plenty of talented offensive linemen in the NFL, some who pass block well, while others prefer to road-grade and earn their reputation in the running game.

Only the elite are able to run and pass block at a high level and the Eagles right guard just landed in a group of high-class offensive linemen.

According to Pro Football Focus, Brooks is among four linemen in the league to earn top-10 grades in both run and pass blocking over the past four years.

Brooks has never had a season that graded lower than average and during that time span of top-10 grades, the Eagles right guard only surrendered four sacks in the last four seasons.

In 2019, Brooks had eight games in which he surrendered no pressure at all.

Philadelphia Eagles have 2 players land on NFL.com’s All-Analytics Team

Philadelphia Eagles have 2 players land on NFL.com’s All-Analytics Team

The Philadelphia Eagles have one of the top offensive lines in football, with Jason Kelce and Brandon Brooks as a cornerstone of the group.

The guard and center combo are among the best at the respective positions in all of football and in a recent All-Analytics ranking from NFL.com, the duo were the only Eagles’ to make the cut.

Jason Kelce
Philadelphia Eagles · Seasons: 9
Kelce made this list a year ago, and now he’s here again, with nearly the same results … In 2018, he kept opposing defenders at least 5 feet from the quarterback on 24.1 percent of passing downs. In 2019, it was 23.9 percent. Both marks were the best at the position. When I use computer vision to measure how players along the O-line provide clean pockets and prevent pressure, it’s clear Kelce set the standard for elite the past two seasons.

RG
Brandon Brooks
Philadelphia Eagles · Seasons: 8
Opposite what happened with Laremy Tunsil, who didn’t have a lot of help, Brooks stood out even though the rest of the unit was also strong. PFF attributes Brooks with allowing only one sack on 605 pass-blocking snaps, and he was their highest-graded guard in 2019 (among those with a minimum of 300 snaps).

Brooks was beaten for just one sack all season and had an overall grade of 92.9 from Pro Football Focus. Brooks’s absence from the Wild Card game against Seattle is a major reason they lost.

Kelce was the only member of the line to play 100% of the team’s snaps on offense, including in their lone playoff game.

Philadelphia Eagles have 3 players make PFF’s list of top 50 NFL players heading into 2020

Philadelphia Eagles have 3 players make PFF’s list of top 50 NFL players heading into 2020

The Philadelphia Eagles are one of the most talented teams in the NFL and two of the most talented players sit on the defensive side of the ball.

Pro Football Focus recently revealed their top-50 players heading into the 2020 NFL season and 3 Philadelphia Eagles landed on the list with Fletcher Cox, Brandon Brooks, and Brandon Graham making the cut.

15. DI Fletcher Cox, Philadelphia Eagles. Aaron Donald exists in a world of his own, but there are a number of other interior defensive linemen who are vying for the title of the best in the league not named Donald. Fletcher Cox is the best power pass-rusher in the NFL. His ability to overwhelm physically dominant offensive linemen is unique, and it has led him to some truly spectacular seasons. Over the past three seasons, Cox has 202 total pressures — the second-most in the league among interior pass rushers — and the sixth most in the league among all players. He is a wrecking machine inside for the Eagles. […]

34. G Brandon Brooks, Philadelphia Eagles. Just a season ago — in his first year back from a torn Achilles — Brandon Brooks won PFF’s Bruce Matthews Award, which is given to the best single offensive lineman in football. It was a career year for a player who has always been quietly one of the best offensive linemen in the league. He has never had a season that graded lower than average, and he has now surrendered just four sacks in four seasons. Last year, he had eight games in which he surrendered no pressure at all, and if anything, he was a better run-blocker than he was a pass-protector. […]

49. EDGE Brandon Graham, Philadelphia Eagles. Brandon Graham has been one of the best edge rushers of the entire decade, but at 32, we may have seen the last of his best years. Last season, his overall PFF grade slipped below 85.0 for the first time since 2015, and he posted the lowest pass-rushing grade of his career since he became a full-time starter. Sixty-seven total pressures is still an impressive number, but the decisive wins weren’t there as often as they had been in previous seasons. Even a declining Brandon Graham is still a problem for an offense, however, and that’s how he makes this list.

The Eagles definitely have a notable snub, but with only 50 players named to the list, it’s hard to argue where Lane Johnson should have landed and Darius Slay as well.

LA Rams star Aaron Donald finished at No. 1 ahead of Patrick Mahomes.

Jason Peters named one of the NFL’s best performers in the 4th-quarter and overtime in 2019

Free-agent left tackle Jason Peters named to Pro Football Focus’s All-Clutch Team

Jason Peters is currently unemployed and not a member of the Philadelphia Eagles but that doesn’t mean his presence isn’t still looming large.

A free agent currently, Peters will likely land on an NFL roster thanks to stats like this one from Pro Football Focus.

According to grades and data collected by PFF, Peters was named one of the NFL’s best performers in the 4th quarter and overtime, landing on the 2019 All-Clutch team.

LT JASON PETERS, PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
Second Team: Taylor Decker, Detroit Lions
Peters may remain a free agent, but this man can still play at 38 years old. His overall grade of 83.4 in 2019 ranked second among all left tackles, and no player graded out better in the clutch than Peters did. It was a balanced effort with grades of 77.0 or higher as both a pass-protector and run-blocker. Peters allowed just five pressures in 114 pass-blocking snaps across these plays. His continued availability as a free agent presents an ideal opportunity for a team that needs stability up front, particularly if the current plan is rushing along a young tackle who may not be ready to step in and start right away.

Right guard Brandon Brooks landed at second-team on the list behind Dallas Cowboys right guard Zach Martin.

Peters has been in constant contact with the Eagles, but the organization appears prepared to move forward with second-year left tackle, Andre Dillard.

Philadelphia Eagles offensive line lands in top-3 of ranking of NFL pass blocking units in 2019

Philadelphia Eagles offensive line was a top-3 pass blocking unit in 2019

Carson Wentz takes some unnecessary hits at times as the quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles but the one thing you can’t do is blame his injuries on the offensive line.

The Birds have the top offensive line in all of football and one reason is Jeff Stoutland’s emphasis on both run and pass blocking.

With three of the top-10 offensive linemen in football, it’s easy to see why Pro Football Focus ranked the Birds No. 3 on the list of top pass-blocking groups.

Jason Peters has moved on for now, but second-year left tackle Andre Dillard seems primed to step up and fill the void.

Brandon Brooks was beaten for just one sack all season and had an overall grade of 92.9 from Pro Football Focus. Brooks’s absence from the Wild Card game against Seattle is a major reason they lost.

At right tackle, Lane Johnson played in just 12 games surrendering just one sack and had a run-blocking grade of 92.6.

Kelce was the only member of the line to play 100% of the team’s snaps on offense, including in their lone playoff game.

The left guard might be the Eagles’ only weakness, and Isaac Seumalo was solid in 2019, as he played all but one snap over the season and finished the year with a PFF grade above 70.0 including the playoffs. Seumalo surrendered five sacks, but four of them came in two games against elite pass rushers.

Eagles Jason Kelce, Brandon Brooks land on the PFF All-Decade Top 101 list

Eagles Jason Kelce, Brandon Brooks land on the PFF All-Decade Top 101 list

[jwplayer k7ZHWy0L-ThvAeFxT]

The Philadelphia Eagles have had one of the best offensive lines in the NFL for years now and that dominance upfront is evident by the list of accolades received.

In 2019, three Eagles finished the regular season ranked in the top-10 of the highest graded linemen in football.

Earlier this offseason, Lane Johnson joined free agent left tackle, Jason Peters, on the Pro Football Focus All-Decade team for the 2010s and he was also named to the top 101 players of 2019 as well.

After announcing the All-Decade team, Pro Football Focus ranked them accordingly by quarters, with Lane Johnson landing in the first release, at No. 79 on the list.

Now two more Eagles offensive stars have popped up on the list with Jason Kelce and Brandon Brooks landing on the list.

52. C JASON KELCE
Jason Kelce was a sixth-round draft pick back in 2011, and though he played 1,000-plus snaps in his rookie year, he didn’t look likely to develop into the kind of dominant force he has since become. From that point onward, however, he cemented himself as one of the game’s best linemen and the standout run-blocking center in football over the past decade. Kelce’s speed and athleticism for the position have enabled him to make blocks that many centers just don’t have the skill set to execute. And while he can occasionally be overwhelmed by size and strength — particularly as a pass-protector — his down-to-down efficiency has been phenomenal.

70. G BRANDON BROOKS
Brandon Brooks has been one of the best and most underrated offensive linemen in the NFL since he entered the league. Last season, he won PFF’s Matthews Award given to the best offensive lineman in the league, and that marked the fifth season in which he has earned a PFF grade that ranked in the top-10 at his position. Brooks has been a powerful run-blocker throughout his career, but his pass protection has been staggeringly consistent. Only once has he surrendered more than one sack in a season, and he has been beaten for a sack just seven times in eight years.

Jason Kelce played every snap of the Eagles’ 2019 season (1,163), the most of any center in the NFL last season. Kelce is one of the best-run blocking centers in the NFL and ended the year as the top-graded player at his position.

Kelce made his third straight Pro Bowl and cemented himself as the top center in the NFL.

After returning early from an Achilles injury, Brooks had the best season of his career and was the best offensive lineman in football.

Brooks surrendered just one sack and 19 total pressures during the 2019 season, and he earned the best run-blocking grade in the NFL among guards.

Brooks was the highest-graded linemen in the league last season (92.9) and was rewarded with a massive new deal.

Numbers 25-49 of the list will be revealed on Wednesday.

Eagles land at No. 12 in ESPN’s 2020 post free agency Power Rankings

Philadelphia Eagles No. 12 team in ESPN’s NFL 2020 Power Rankings

The Philadelphia Eagles are preparing for the NFL and looking ahead to some semblance of an NFL season amid the COVID-19 crisis.

Even with everything going on, ESPN Insiders have been paying attention to the offseason transactions and the Birds just landed a favorable ranking in the post-free agency power rankings.

Carson Wentz and company landed right outside the top-10, coming in at No. 12.

12. Philadelphia Eagles

Way-too-early ranking: 14

Three words: Send receivers, STAT! The Eagles did not address wide receiver during the main wave of free agency, even with Nelson Agholor departing for the Raiders and Alshon Jeffery still recovering from Lisfranc surgery. The plan is clear: to address the need in the draft by drawing early and often from what has been dubbed a historic wide receiver class. That approach leaves little room for error. The pressure is on to get it right come April. — Tim McManus

The Cowboys and Buccaneers landed in front of the Birds at 11 and 10 respectively.

While the Eagles wait to load up on receivers via the draft, Howie Roseman restocked the talent pool, acquiring Darius Slay via trade, and signing Javon Hargrave, Nickell Robey-Coleman, Jatavis Brown, Will Parks.

The team also re-signed Jalen Mills and Rodney McLeod at the safety position.

10 Eagles with the biggest cap numbers for 2020 NFL season

10 Eagles with the biggest cap numbers for 2020 NFL season

The Philadelphia Eagles entered the start of free agency with around $44 million in cap space, and with the several huge contracts on the horizon for the coming season and the trade for Darius Slay, it’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for several big named veterans.

Carson Wentz will be playing on the last year of his rookie deal and the Birds will likely have a decision on Fletcher Cox, whose cap number continues to rise with each passing day.

With the Eagles in the midst of their retool and youth movement, here’s a look at the ten biggest cap numbers for this upcoming season via Over The Cap.

***

1) Fletcher Cox $22.8M

The Eagles signed Cox to a 6 year, $102.6 million extensions in 2016 and although his play has dipped some, he’s still one of the top-2 defensive tackles in the game and warrants his salary.  The 2020 season will be Cox’s last with guaranteed money and it’ll be a situation to watch.
