Former Colorado tight end Brady Russell enjoying strong preseason with Seattle Seahawks

Former Colorado standout Brady Russell is balling this preseason

Fighting for a spot in the NFL, former Colorado Buffaloes tight end Brady Russell is a few days away from finding out if he has made the Seattle Seahawks’ 53-man roster.

Russell has caught five passes for 47 yards and a touchdown through two preseason games and is expected to survive head coach Mike Macdonald’s final roster cuts. The 6-foot-3, 250-pound Colorado native has reportedly stood out during Seattle’s training camp, even with all three TEs ahead of him healthy.

Russell, who hails from Fort Collins, already has a heartwarming story, playing linebacker and tight end for CU’s scout team as a walk-on before earning a scholarship. That scholarship quickly turned into Russell being named a team captain. While the Buffs won only one game during his final college season in 2022, Russell signed with the Philadelphia Eagles after going undrafted in 2023. He then joined the Seahawks midway through last season.

But, Russell’s path is what has kept him around in the football world. Instead of celebrating, Russell has consistently worked for his next opportunity.

“I’m not trying to prove anything to anyone, I’m just trying to do whatever is asked of me at the time and do my job to the best of my ability,” Russell told Seattle media. “But (my path) definitely formed my work ethic into what it is now, and what it’s had to be in order to get to where I’m at now.”

Russell and the Seahawks play their final preseason game on Saturday against the Cleveland Browns at 8 p.m. MT on NFL Network.

First half highlights: Seahawks lead Chargers 13-3

First half highlights: Seahawks lead Chargers 13-3

The Seattle Seahawks may only lead the Los Angeles Chargers by 10 points, but they are dominating outright. Seattle’s defense already looks far improved and has completely stiffled a Chargers offense lacking quarterback Justin Herbert. Primary backup Easton Stick has had no answers, as the Chargers have been held to only three points, three first downs and only 44 total yards.

Seattle struck first on the evening when quarterback Sam Howell found tight end Brady Russell for a 13-yard touchdown. Facing third-and-four, Russell blasted through several Chargers defenders en route to paydirt.

The Seahawks found their second scoring opportunity shortly after this, when Stick’s first pass of the drive was tipped and fell into the waiting arms of Coby Bryant.

Four plays later, Seattle found the end zone behind a strong rush by running back George Holani, trying his best to earn the third stringer role.

We also got our first glimpse at how dominant Byron Murphy II can be. The No. 16 pick from the 2024 NFL draft was widely regarded as the best defensive tackle prospect available, and he showed why he received such top billing.

Unfortunately, Los Angeles’ defense has started to clamp down on the Seahawks. Seattle’s offensive line has struggled, allowing two sacks so far, including this one to knock the Seahawks out of field goal range for a shot at more points to extend their lead.

The Seahawks will get the ball back to start the second half. Be sure to follow @TheSeahawksWire on Twitter for live updates during the game.

The Seattle Seahawks are back in action for the first time since January 7th, 2024 as they take on the Los Angeles Chargers for their preseason opener. So far, the fireworks from Seattle are flying early. The Seahawks have dominated the Chargers defensively, and now lead thanks to Sam Howell and tight end Brady Russell.

Facing third down deep in LA’s territory, Howell found Russell who broke through several Chargers defenders to give the Seahawks their first touchdown of the 2024 preseason.

Sam Howell is currently 8-of-13 passing for 47 yards and a touchdown.

Seahawks 53-man roster tracker: Leonard Williams in, Cody Thompson out

Here’s the updated 53-man roster by jersey number going into tomorrow’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

The Seahawks are serious about making a deep postseason run this year. Just hours after their home win over the Browns, Seattle pulled off a trade that should help them get there. The front office has sent a 2024 second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-rounder to the Giants in exchange for Leonard Williams, one of the top interior pass rushers in the league.

To make room for Wiliams, the Seahawks have waived wide receiver Cody Thompson. Our roster tracker is now updated (Oct. 31).

Seahawks updated depth chart + practice squad heading into Week 3

After so many changes now seems like a good team to revisit the depth chart.

The Seattle Seahawks made a flurry of roster and practice squad moves on Wednesday, reshaping their team as they prepare for their third game of the 2023 season at home against the Carolina Panthers.

To recap, rookie defensive end Mike Morris has been placed on injured reserve and head coach Pete Carroll says he’s likely out for the year. The team has also signed cornerback Artie Burns to the active roster, signed tight end Brady Russell off the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad and released second-year outside linebacker Tyreke Smith. These moves come on the heels of an also-active Week 2, which saw the Seahawks bring in four new offensive linemen following injuries to Charles Cross and Abe Lucas – who is also currently on the injured reserve list.

After so many changes now seems like a good team to revisit the depth chart. Here’s what each position looks like, including practice squad players.

Seahawks add former Buffs TE Brady Russell to active roster

Former #cubuffs tight end Brady Russell is headed to Seattle

The Colorado Buffaloes don’t have too many alumni currently in the NFL, although that will change soon with the talent that is playing in Boulder now.

However, former Buffs tight end Brady Russell, who was a part of last year’s 1-11 team, signed with the Seattle Seahawks on Monday and is joining their active roster.

Russell was previously on the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad.

The Athletic’s Michael-Shawn Dugar reported that Russell has made it to Seattle and is wearing No. 38, the same number he wore with the Buffs.

The former Buffs tight end went undrafted out of college but signed an UDFA deal with the Eagles and played well in the preseason, even scoring a touchdown during one of the contests before being sent to the practice squad.

Now, he will try and make some noise with the Seahawks under former USC Trojans head coach Pete Carroll. The Seahawks host the Carolina Panthers in Week 3.

5 reported Seahawks roster moves going into Week 3

Here’s a review of all the reports this week concerning the Seahawks.

The Seattle Seahawks have been extremely busy over the last couple of days based on what we’ve read from NFL reporters around the league. While the team hasn’t officially announced any of them yet, there are now at least five moves coming – with heavy speculation about one more to come.

The rumors concern second-year cornerback Riq Woolen, who injured his shoulder in Sunday’s overtime win over the Detroit Lions. While head coach Pete Carroll told reporters a few days ago that Woolen will be “OK”, that’s Pete-Carroll code for likely to miss the next four or five weeks due to a significant injury that requires surgery. Hopefully that’s not the case this time, but we’ll find out one way or another soon.

Eagles to sign TE Brady Russell to their practice squad

The Eagles are bringing Brady Rusell back on the practice squad after a solid summer, and he could be a player to watch as a developmental prospect.

Russell failed to make the 53-man roster, but the rookie undrafted free agent out of Colorado had a strong training camp and will remain with the organization.

WATCH: Brady Russell catches touchdown pass in Eagles preseason game

Former Buff Brady Russell caught a touchdown pass in the Eagles’ second preseason game

The Colorado Buffaloes don’t have a ton of players currently in the NFL. However, Brady Russell, who was with the Buffs last season, signed a free agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles this spring after going undrafted.

The Eagles faced the Cleveland Browns in Week 2 of the NFL preseason and Russell earned some playing time. He was targeted two times and caught one pass, which was a 22-yard touchdown from Tanner McKee, the former Stanford signal-caller.

In Week 1 of the preseason, Russell was targeted just one time and didn’t record a catch. Still, having an opportunity with the reigning NFC champs is massive for Russell, although he’ll likely have an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster.

The Eagles and Browns ended up in an 18-18 tie on Thursday night. Philadelphia’s next and final preseason contest comes Aug. 24 against the Indianapolis Colts.
