Notre Dame wide receiver Braden Lenzy has made a decision on his football future

Best of luck to Lenzy

As I postulated earlier today in my day after thoughts, Irish wide receiver [autotag]Braden Lenzy[/autotag] has decided to move on from [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag]. Not only will Lenzy not play in South Bend next year, he announced that he is hanging up his cleats and will no longer play football.

It’s an interesting decision to say the least, as he had the chance to get drafted and play in the NFL. Instead he will start his professional career with Medasourse, a healthcare consulting leader according to their website. You have to believe it was a bittersweet moment yesterday for Lenzy, who went out catching four passes for 89 yards and a touchdown.

During his four year career, Lenzy caught 74 balls for 976 yards and 9 touchdowns. We wish him the best as he continues his life away from football.

The day after: Lasting thoughts on Notre Dame’s epic comeback over South Carolina

What still sticks out in your mind Irish fans?

How nice was it to wake up knowing that the Irish were winners of the [autotag]TaxSlayer Gator Bowl[/autotag]? Really nice, right?

It’s going to be a very interesting off-season in South Bend, one which could very well give us an idea of what to expect going forward.

There were plenty of those thoughts that popped into my head since yesterday and here they are on plenty of Irish topics.

Notre Dame wins thrilling Gator Bowl over South Carolina: Instant Takeaways

What was your favorite part of the thrilling win?

Notre Dame finished their first season under head coach Marcus Freeman with an incredibly memorable Gator Bowl victory over South Carolina.  45-38 sounds absurd enough to type out but the reality is the game featured a little bit of everything – good and bad.

Most importantly for the Irish, they finish the year with a win and 9-4 overall mark.  In a sense it was fitting how this game went, as it was somewhat symbolic of Notre Dame football over the past 13 months.

We’ll have plenty of post-game reaction following the thrilling victory here at Fighting Irish Wire.  Let’s start with a few instant takeaways from the 45-38 victory.

Hidden plays that helped Notre Dame comeback against South Carolina

The Irish didn’t just use big plays to get a Gator Bowl win

That was fun, wasn’t it? Now that the Irish have their bowl victory in hand, we can all breathe a sigh of relief and celebrate into New Year’s Eve tomorrow night.

Notre Dame didn’t make it easy on themselves early, but hung in there and eventually secured a 45-38 victory over South Carolina in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl. It game Marcus Freeman his first bowl win and a 9-4 record this season.

The Irish used plenty of big plays to get back into this game, but here were some plays that helped dictate the outcome that weren’t huge and these are those plays.

Notre Dame wins thrilling Gator Bowl over South Carolina

An absolute thriller!

If you’re someone who can’t let themselves enjoy college football’s non-playoff bowl games then you missed a ton of fun on Friday afternoon.  Notre Dame and South Carolina dueled in a thriller in the Gator Bowl as the game featured just about everything one could imagine.

South Carolina jumped out to 21-7 and 24-10 leads before Notre Dame stormed back to take a 38-31 lead in the fourth quarter.  Leading by seven and seemingly about to head in to end the contest for all intents and purposes, Tommy Rees inexplicably decided to pass the ball which resulted in an all-time backfire.

Instead of a two-score lead, a pick-six made the score was 38-38 late in the fourth quarter.  The running game was relied heavily on by Notre Dame to get down field before Rees again went to the air with Tyler Buchner, who played his first game since September, and he found Mitchell Evans on a throwback to give the Irish a 45-38 lead.

It might not win any awards for being the best played bowl game you’ll ever see but it was certainly one of the most entertaining games one will ever witness.

The 45-38 win gives Notre Dame a 9-4 final overall record while South Carolina finishes 8-5.

What a way to end Marcus Freeman’s first season as head coach as the game had as many ups and downs as the past four months.  Stay tuned to Fighting Irish Wire as we’ll have tons of reaction all evening long.

Twitter reacts to Logan Diggs’ go-ahead touchdown in Gator Bowl

Pretty run.

It turned out [autotag]Braden Lenzy[/autotag] wasn’t content with a game-tying touchdown in the Gator Bowl. Apparently, getting in on a successful fake punt was necessary, too. Lenzy was on the receiving end of such a play, and he picked up 20 yards to keep Notre Dame’s first fourth-quarter drive alive. It was a bit of revenge for South Carolina pulling the same stunt in the first quarter and scoring a touchdown off of it.

While Lenzy didn’t score a touchdown on this particular fake punt, he did set one up. Three plays later, [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag] ran for a 39-yard score, his second of the game, to give the Irish a 38-31 lead, their first of the game:

If the Irish come away with a victory, that sequence will be one of many things the fan base looks back on. In fact, many members wanted to look back on it immediately, and you can see that through these tweets:

Huge touchdown.

Notre Dame has bent but not broken against South Carolina in Gator Bowl. Not once have the Irish held the lead. But they keep putting themselves in position to eventually take it.

Late in the third quarter, the Irish trailed, 31-24, after the Gamecocks’ Xavier Legette scored a touchdown on which he appeared to kick up white chalk on the edge of the end zone. The touchdown stood upon review, so the Irish were forced to play from behind yet again and hope for another big play. They got one when they were set up nicely on a short punt, and [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag] hit [autotag]Braden Lenzy[/autotag] for a 44-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage:

This is yet another reminder of how different the Irish are this season. In years past, they would have curled up in a ball at any sign of adversity. Instead, they’re going to make the Gamecocks earn this game. Irish fans on Twitter love that and this touchdown:

Twitter reacts to Notre Dame’s Logan Diggs’ fourth touchdown of season

Nice little scoring run.

Once again, Notre Dame is proving that it just won’t go away. USC is playing for a shot at the College Football Playoff, and the Irish are making them earn it. Every time it seems like the Irish are left for dead, they show they still has some life. We saw this after a 25-yard reception by [autotag]Braden Lenzy[/autotag], which helped lead to this 5-yard touchdown run from [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag] to cut the deficit to 31-21:

This was Diggs’ third rushing touchdown of the season and his fourth overall. Both numbers match those same marks from last season. So at the very least, he broke even for the year, and he stands to improve even more in 2022. Even with an Irish loss, he can consider this season a personal success.

Here are some of the things that were tweeted after Diggs’ touchdown, even if it came at a point in the game where many might have figured the game already was over:

Notre Dame survives Navy comeback: The best photos

The photos of Braden Lenzy’s catch are pretty incredible

Notre Dame played about as well on offense as they could have dreamed in Saturday’s first half, scoring 35 points and pretty much moving the ball at will against Navy.  However, the second half was a different story as the Irish totaled just two yards of offense in the final 30 minutes.

There was a lot of good and a good amount of bad, and plenty that Notre Dame fans would probably just like to forget about.  You can say the game was the 2022 season in a nutshell.

As we move on to Notre Dame’s senior day contest with Boston College, here’s a look back at the best photos from Saturday’s victory over Navy.

Notre Dame’s Braden Lenzy might’ve just made the catch of the year on an incredible touchdown

How did he catch that?

The luck really seems to be with the Fighting Irish as of late.

On the heels of Notre Dame knocking off Clemson last Saturday, the team may have snagged what might be the best catch of the 2022 college football season so far against Navy.

On a 38-yard bomb from Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne, wideout Braden Lenzy got leverage behind a Navy defensive back and somehow reached around to begin to catch the ball with one hand.

He gots his other hand around to steady the ball, created just enough separation from the Navy player and completed the haul for an eye-popping touchdown.

Like, oh my word. The way Lenzy was able to steady himself around the defender to secure the ball is the stuff of legend.

There have been some outstanding catches in college football this year, but this one from Notre Dame might take the cake thus far.
