Bruins’ Tuukka Rask reportedly might retire due to injury issues and NHL fans are heartbroken

Tuukka Rask’s NHL career might be coming to an unfortunate end.

This is surely not the way Tuukka Rask wanted his NHL career to end.

According to a report from Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic, Rask is reportedly contemplating retirement due to a nagging injury. The long-time Boston Bruins goaltender had hip surgery in the summer and made his return to the team in January, but played just four games before going back on injured reserve.

Rask last played on January 24, a game in which he gave up five goals against the Anaheim Ducks.

That Rask is considering retirement in this way at just 34-years-old is such a huge shame. Rask is very likely the Bruins’ greatest goaltender of all time, having the most wins (308) of any goalie in franchise history. Not only that, Rask was the back up to the team’s 2011 Stanley Cup victory and helped backstop the team to two more Stanley Cup Final appearances in 2013 and 2019.

Though Rask tried to come back after his hip surgery, even signing a one-year contract in January to rejoin the team, he is reportedly still feeling discomfort from going under the knife. Hockey fans were heartbroken for Rask upon learning this news Tuesday night, as a retirement announcement reportedly could come within the next few days.

TD Garden fired up with Mac Jones, Hunter Henry and David Andrews in attendance

The three Patriots appeared to have a great time of the Bruins’ game.

Mac Jones is already becoming a fan-favorite in Boston.

The New England Patriots quarterback led the team to a 10-7 record, along with a playoff berth as a rookie. He has a bright future with the Patriots and he’s already becoming acclimated with the fellow Boston teams.

Jones, David Andrews and Hunter Henry were spotted at the Boston Bruins vs. Washington Capitals game on Thursday night at TD Garden. Andrews, as he’s done in the past, was extremely quick to chug a beer on the Jumbotron and get the crowd fired up.

Here’s a look at the three Patriots enjoying their offseason already.

Bill Belichick will continue to coach and the Patriots have a lot to look forward to in the future with Jones at the helm.

An angry Artemi Panarin threw his glove at Brad Marchand from the Rangers’ bench

Who throws a glove? Honestly!

Who throws a glove? Honestly!

It’s New York Rangers star Artemi Panarin, who was on the New York Rangers’ bench and was chirping at the Boston Bruins’ Brad Marchand, known for his smack-talking and annoying ways.

The two were talking back and forth, and Panarin removed his left gloved and chucked it at Marchand. The funny thing is that Panarin then asked for it back.

What was the story behind it? We probably won’t find out the answer, but here was Marchand’s quote: “We were talking about what we had for Thanksgiving dinner. He didn’t like what I ate.”

Right.

Former Notre Dame players on NHL rosters to begin 2021-22 season

Pay special attention to these players this season.

The puck has dropped on the 2021-22 NHL season, and the full 82-game schedule has returned. Besides the usual amount of hockey to look forward to once again, there also is a new team that has taken the ice. One player on that team played collegiate hockey at Notre Dame, as did nine other players who are starting the year on NHL rosters. That number could grow later this season with 15 other former Irish players starting play in the AHL, but for now, here are the 10 you can see at hockey’s top level at this moment:

Tom Wilson is already stirring up trouble for the Capitals, and it’s only the NHL preseason

Already, Tom Wilson?

The next NHL season hasn’t even started yet and Tom Wilson is already getting under hockey fans’ skin.

It’s training camp and preseason time for the NHL as the 2021-22 season continues to creep closer. On Sunday, the Washington Capitals were hosting the Boston Bruins in their first preseason game of the month when a familiar face to all hockey fans caused a bit of a dust up in the first period.

Off a faceoff, Wilson and Bruins’ Anton Blidh were fighting for position when the former got his elbow up into the face of his opposition. The exchange ended as Wilson got one final elbow back into Blidh’s face before skating away, with no penalties on either side.

A small exchange, to be sure, but one that clearly ruffled feathers on the Bruins and annoyed quite a few hockey fans because… it’s the preseason, Tom!

Wilson is no stranger to drawing ire across the NHL, especially with the way last regular season ended between the Capitals and Rangers. However, let’s hope that this year is finally the year Wilson contains himself or the NHL steps up and does it for him.

Hockey fans pay tribute to ex-NHLer Jimmy Hayes with moving stick salute at funeral

Rest in peace, Jimmy Hayes.

The last week has been a tough one for the hockey community. In late August, the news of the sudden passing of Jimmy Hayes at age 31 shocked the sports world.

Hayes was a NHL veteran of seven seasons and a Boston native, having won a national hockey championship at Boston College. He played 334 professional games at the NHL level, spending a good portion of his career with his hometown team, the Boston Bruins, before retiring in 2019.

On Monday, the hockey world came together to mourn Hayes’ tragic and shocking death — the cause has yet to be disclosed — with a funeral and memorial service at St. Ann’s Church in Dorchester, MA. Jimmy’s wife, Kristen, and brother Kevin — currently playing with the Philadelphia Flyers — were in attendance, alongside P.K. Subban,

Outside of the church and along the funeral route, hundreds of hockey fans lined the streets to pay tribute to Hayes one last time. Dorchester Youth Hockey, among other hockey fans in the community, gave Hayes one final stick salute — the universal hockey symbol of respect and reverence.

What an incredible sendoff for a very special hockey player. You’ll be missed, Jimmy Hayes.

Islanders fans troll Bruce Cassidy, Bruins with ‘New York Saints’ chant, and hockey Twitter loved it

NEW YORK SAINTS.

After the New York Islanders beat the Boston Bruins at home on Monday in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference second round, Boston coach Bruce Cassidy had some harsh criticism for the NHL’s officiating crew.

And in Wednesday’s Game 6, Islanders fans trolled Cassidy and hilariously threw his words right back at the Bruins — even if it was at their own team’s expense.

“I think they sell a narrative over there that it’s more like the New York Saints, not the New York Islanders,” Cassidy said in part after Game 5 when the Islanders capitalized on three-of-four power plays in the 5-4 win. “They play hard and they play the right way, but I feel we’re the same way, and the exact calls that get called on us do not get called on them and I don’t know why.”

When the series returned to New York for Game 6, Isles fans totally embraced the opportunity to play up their team’s new nickname.

The Islanders caught two first-period penalties: First two minutes to winger Anthony Beauvillier for tripping defenseman Charlie McAvoy and another shortly after to center Casey Cizikas for tripping winger Taylor Hall to give the Bruins a two-man advantage for a few seconds.

After the second penalty, the Nassau Coliseum erupted chanting, “New York Saints! New York Saints!”

This was some brilliant and extremely petty trolling after back-to-back penalties proved Cassidy’s original point not quite accurate. And hockey Twitter loved it.

2021 NHL trade deadline winners and losers

Which teams were the big winners and losers of the 2021 NHL trade deadline?

The music has stopped on the 2021 NHL trade deadline and the players have found their respective chairs. Monday’s trade deadline was not at all an exciting one in the NHL this year, for reasons varying from the flat salary cap to the upcoming expansion draft.

Though deadline day was underwhelming, the last few weeks as a whole have seen some interesting shuffling between the teams as organizations prepare for playoff runs or look toward the upcoming draft.

As such, it’s time to find out which NHL teams were the winners of trade deadline day and which wished they could have gotten another crack at the whole ordeal.

2021 NHL trade deadline: Grading the major deals

It’s time for a report card on the NHL’s biggest trade deadline deals.

The 2021 NHL trade deadline has passed and it was… well it was certainly a day! In total, 17 deals were made on deadline day itself, a very slow moving morning and afternoon after the majority of the trades were made over the weekend or in the early morning hours on Monday.

It was as many suspected it would be, a slow deadline day with teams mostly unable to make major splashes thanks to the flat cap and the impending expansion draft for Seattle in the upcoming summer.

Still, there were some big trades that caused some waves — some expected and some, not so much. Let’s break down the 2021 NHL trade deadline’s biggest deals and give them grades based on our early, gut feelings.
