The winners (Rangers!) and losers (Flyers) of the 2023 NHL trade deadline

Which NHL teams were the big winners (and losers!) at the trade deadline?

Pencils down, everyone. The 2023 NHL trade deadline is officially over.

This year’s NHL trade deadline has certainly been one for the history books. After years of middling trade deadlines, NHL teams really stepped it up a notch and went all-out with the deals in the weeks leading up to Friday. While the day itself may have been light on the action, over 60 trades were made since the New York Islanders kicked things off with the Bo Horvat deal in late January.

And now, the dust is beginning to settle on an active deadline period that saw many high-end players change hands as the Stanley Cup Playoffs draw near. With the deadline rush over, now is the time to take look at the big picture and draw some early conclusions based on what teams did — or didn’t — do.

Here are our winners and losers from the 2023 NHL trade deadline.

The 2023 NHL trade deadline has officially passed!

The 3 p.m. ET deadline on Friday come and gone, marking one of the busiest trade deadline periods hockey fans have seen in some time. While deadline day itself was a bit of a snooze, there were still a lot of names dealt over the past few weeks.

A handful of the big names — Patrick Kane, Timo Meier, Ryan O’Reilly, and others — were traded in advance of Friday, with NHL general managers clearly wasting no time in making moves and doing business.

With the trade deadline now finished, here are all the trades that have been made! Plus, there are grades for all the major deals with our early impressions and thoughts.

The winners (Rangers!) and losers (Flyers) of the 2023 NHL trade deadline

Flyers fans couldn’t believe a James van Riemsdyk deal fell apart at the deadline

Chuck Fletcher failed to trade James van Riemsdyk and Flyers fans are not happy.

The Philadelphia Flyers were supposed to be sellers at the 2023 NHL trade deadline.

And it seemed, for about 10 minutes, that their biggest asset — James van Riemsdyk — was going to be traded to the Detroit Red Wings before Friday’s 3 p.m. ET deadline. About 20 minutes before the deadline, a handful of NHL insiders reported that the Red Wings were closing in on a deal to acquire the 33-year-old Flyers forward.

Unfortunately for Flyers fans, the deal ultimately fell through moments later, as general manager Chuck Fletcher could not close out the trade as the window passed. To go from trading your most valuable asset to nothing within minutes is a rough go for the Flyers, that’s for sure.

It’s hard to say why the Flyers failed to trade van Riemsdyk to the Red Wings, but it seems as if Detroit was ultimately looking to flip him for draft picks then things suddenly collapsed. In the end, it seems as if the Flyers just couldn’t make the fit work by deadline’s end.

Flyers fans, however, were stunned that Fletcher and Philadelphia’s management failed to close out a deal days after the team said they were set to sell at the deadline. In the end, the Flyers only managed to trade Patrick Brown and Zack MacEwen, two fringe players who didn’t get much in return.

And amidst a dull morning, Boudreau took the time to give the TSN trade deadline team a hilarious, expletive-filled pep talk to get the crew back on track for the rest of the day.

Talk about a speech for the ages there from Boudreau!
