Bojan Bogdanovic trade grades: Who won the deal between the Pistons and the Jazz?

The Pistons got a bit better and the Jazz (willingly) got A LOT worse

Well, folks. We have a trade. It is absolutely not the trade you were looking for today, but it is a trade nonetheless.

The Utah Jazz are continuing their complete makeover in tearing their team down to the studs to get ready for their campaign in the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes. They’ve reportedly traded Bojan Bogdanovic to the Detroit Pistons for Kelly Olynyk and Saben Lee, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Again, this isn’t the Kevin Durant or Donovan Mitchell-sized move people had been looking for this offseason. But it might shake up the bottom of the Eastern Conference quite a bit.

Let’s dive into these trade grades.

Lakers are targeting three Jazz players in potential Westbrook trade

The Lakers are reportedly interested in trading Russell Westbrook to the Jazz for Bojan Bogdanovic, Jordan Clarkson and Malik Beasley.

At this point of the offseason, it appears the only possible path to a Russell Westbrook trade for the Los Angeles Lakers is the Utah Jazz.

The teams are reportedly having ongoing discussions to get a deal done.

The signing of veteran guard Dennis Schroder has led some fans and observers to think a Westbrook trade is near, although there is no evidence to suggest that.

But the Lakers are continuing their efforts to make such a deal happen, and they’re reportedly zeroing in on three Jazz players: Bojan Bogdanovic, Jordan Clarkson and Malik Beasley.

Via The Athletic:

“In recent conversations with the Jazz, the Lakers have targeted Bogdanović, Jordan Clarkson and Malik Beasley, according to league sources,” wrote Jovan Buha and Sam Amick.

One big need for the Lakers is accurate 3-point shooting, and Bogdanovic and Beasley would help address that weakness. Beasley and Clarkson would give them two reliable options at the 2 spot, although the latter isn’t a very efficient scorer.

Still, Clarkson is just a calendar year removed from winning the Sixth Man of the Year award, and, of course, he played his first three-and-a-half seasons with the Purple and Gold.

Training camp will start Sept. 26 with media day.

Lakers have interest in three Utah Jazz veterans

The Lakers haven’t given up on trying to move Russell Westbrook, and the Jazz may be a landing spot for him.

On Thursday, the Utah Jazz traded three-time All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell to the Cleveland Cavaliers, but they may not be done wheeling and dealing.

They are obviously starting a full rebuild project, and they still have a few veterans they may want to unload before the end of the summer.

The Los Angeles Lakers, meanwhile, would still love to unload Russell Westbrook and get some value in return for him.

Los Angeles is interested in three of the players the Jazz may want to trade — Mike Conley, Bojan Bogdanovic and Jordan Clarkson — but with one caveat.

Via Lakers Daily:

“A possible swap for Conley could include Russell Westbrook and a first-round pick, although the Lakers would have to carry some of Conley’s salary in the 2023-24 season, as his deal is partially guaranteed.”

The Lakers reportedly want to keep as much salary cap space as possible open for next summer so they could go after Kyrie Irving, who could become a free agent at that time if he doesn’t sign an extension with the Brooklyn Nets.

Lakers could be interested in Patrick Beverley and Bojan Bogdanovic

The Lakers reportedly have two new trade targets.

With the Brooklyn Nets’ Kyrie Irving apparently off the table, the Los Angeles Lakers seem to be shifting their focus to trading for other players who could improve their roster.

Two players they’re reportedly interested in are veteran guard Patrick Beverley and forward Bojan Bogdanović, both of whom are currently with the Utah Jazz.

They may not provide the type of major upgrade Irving would’ve been, but they could help move the needle.

Beverley is a tenacious point-of-attack defender, while Bogdanovic is a capable scorer and an outstanding 3-point shooter.

Via Lakers Daily:

“The Los Angeles Lakers have yet to make any major acquisitions this offseason, but point guard Patrick Beverley and forward Bojan Bogdanovic appear to be two potential trade targets for the storied franchise.”

The problem with going after both is that Danny Ainge, the former Boston Celtics guard, is the CEO of basketball operations for the Jazz. It’s hard to imagine someone like that helping the Lakers in any fashion.

New mock trade has Sixers acquiring Bojan Bogdanovic from Jazz

A new mock trade proposal has the Philadelphia 76ers acquiring Bojan Bogdanovic from the Utah Jazz.

The Philadelphia 76ers are just about done with any of the big moves to their roster after they re-signed James Harden to a 1+1 deal. There could still be a minor move here and there to help improve the bench unit, but for the most part, they’re just about done.

Still, it’s still fun to take a look at some other mock trades involving the Sixers.

This one comes from Bleacher Report and it details Philadelphia making a deal with the Utah Jazz. However, not for Donovan Mitchell, but for the 3-point sharpshooter Bojan Bogdanovic.

Please note the trade from this article is from July 5.

Proposed trade sends Bogdanovic to Chicago, Caruso and White to Utah

The Bulls would add another veteran scorer on the wing yet their backcourt depth would take a serious hit.

As the NBA Finals are in full swing, the rest of the league are already brainstorming ways to better their chances of playing in June next season.

For the Chicago Bulls, they’re first priority is resigning two-time All-Star Zach LaVine, but they’ll need another big move to turn themselves into a contender in the Eastern Conference.

Eric Waldon of the Salt Lake Tribune came up with a Utah Jazz trade with every NBA team, and for the Bulls, that proposed trade landed them another veteran scorer on the wing.

Waldon proposed that Chicago send guards Alex Caruso and Coby White to Utah for forward Bojan Bogdanovic.

Waldon’s thinking:

Chicago finds a way to add some needed shooting. Utah is able to get younger, add one of the league’s underrated perimeter defenders, and also take a chance on a young PG who’s an ex-lottery pick.
Bogdanovic would certainly add another shooting presence on the wing for the Bulls but the loss of Caruso would loom large with how much of a positive he is on both ends of the floor for Chicago this season. And with the uncertainty of Lonzo Ball’s injury, losing two guards like Caruso and White wouldn’t make too much sense at the moment.

OKC Thunder player grades: SGA scores another efficient 30-point game in 116-103 loss to Jazz

SGA continues to play like arguably the best player in the league since the All-Star Break.

The fourth quarter really changed the perception of this game. It looked like the Oklahoma City Thunder were going to be handed a second straight blowout loss against a northwest divisional for at home by the Utah Jazz as they trailed by as much as 23 points. The final score of the game was 116-103 and considering how bleak things were looking for the majority of the game, the Thunder should be appreciative of their effort and a final push to make this game competitive near the end.

For the Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was great once again as he finished with 33 points on 23 shots and 12 trips to the free-throw line. Gilgeous-Alexander has been one of the best players in the league since the All-Star Break due to his high-scoring, high-efficiency streak of games he is currently on.

The Jazz shot the ball like one would expect the top offensive rating team to shoot it as the team went 23-of-52 (44.2 percent) from three this game. This included Bojan Bogdanovic making a career-high 11 threes this game as he finished with 35 points. Donovan Mitchell finished with 24 points and 10 assists while Rudy Gobert finished with 12 points and 17 rebounds. Off the bench, Jordan Clarkson added 20 points.

Overall, the Thunder turned what could’ve been a second straight blowout loss to a respectable double digit loss with its fourth quarter efforts. This is a sign of a well coached team that the players — especially in the Thunder’s case where they are currently shorthanded and forced to play multiple G League guys heavy minutes — are able to stay within the game and not let the scoreboard discourage its performance. Let’s take a look at player grades.

Donovan Mitchell leads Jazz in blowout win over sluggish Rockets

The Rockets won at Utah in January, but that was with Donovan Mitchell unavailable. The All-Star guard made sure Monday that it wouldn’t happen again.

Here’s what we learned postgame.

The young and rebuilding Rockets were dominated from the opening tipoff on Monday night in Utah, where the Jazz (36-21) built on their spot as the No. 4 team in the Western Conference during a 135-101 victory (box score). Houston (15-41) remains in last place in the West.

Donovan Mitchell led the Jazz with 30 points and 7 assists on 9-of-15 shooting (60.0%), including 5-of-9 on 3-pointers (55.6%). Bojan Bogdanovic added 22 points and hit 4-of-7 from 3-point range (57.1%).

Second-year forward KJ Martin led the Rockets with an energetic showing off the bench, recording 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting (66.7%) in 26 minutes, including 2-of-3 on 3-pointers (66.7%). Eric Gordon and Jae’Sean Tate added 14 points apiece, while Kevin Porter Jr. struggled with his shot but dished out 8 assists without turning the ball over.

Newcomer Dennis Schroder dished out 5 assists in 18 minutes during his Houston debut, but he didn’t have the touch on his jumper or floater, scoring just 4 points on 2-of-6 shooting (33.3%).

Christian Wood added 12 points (55.6% FG, 50.0% on 3-pointers), 4 assists, and a team-high 9 rebounds, while rookie Jalen Green scored 13 points. No Houston player broke the 30-minute mark due to the lopsided score, with Utah dishing out 34 assists versus an uninspired defense.

Celtics swap Jaylen Brown for godfather offer from Atlanta Hawks in new B/R trade proposal

The author has an alternative proposal that is so sweet it would be hard to say no — but would the Hawks even offer it?

Given that star Boston Celtics small forward Jaylen Brown happens to hail from the greater Atlanta, Georgia area, we understand why he is so often a focal point for fake trades to the Atlanta Hawks.

But we would think that by now analysts would take the Celtics organization at their word that they have no intention of trading the Marrietta native to another team any time soon. Still, the lingering effects of Boston’s uneven play makes the team — and Brown — constant fodder for trade proposal articles like a recent piece from Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes specifically created to focus on such unlikely-to-move-players.

Even the biggest fans of Brown on and off the court have to admit that there are packages the team ought to say yes to, even if it is unlikely the Celtics ever see such an offer in the short term future.

Anatomy of an upset: The biggest plays from Houston’s win at Utah

The young and rebuilding Rockets weren’t supposed to win at Utah, but led by the likes of Kevin Porter Jr. and Garrison Mathews, they found a way. Here’s a look back at their biggest plays.

Young and rebuilding teams like the 2021-22 Rockets aren’t supposed to beat perceived Western Conference contenders, and especially not on the road. But that’s exactly what Houston (14-32) somehow managed to do at Utah (29-16) on Wednesday night in Salt Lake City.

For the Rockets, who had five players score in double figures as part of a balanced effort, it was a third win in their last four games — all away from home. Sharpshooter Garrison Mathews led the way in the 116-111 win (box score) with a team-high 23 points off the bench, including 5-of-9 on 3-pointers (55.6%). But he had plenty of help, as well.

Veterans Bojan Bogdanovic (29 points, 5 rebounds), Rudy Gobert (23 points, 9 rebounds), and Jordan Clarkson (19 points, 4 assists) led the Jazz, but it wasn’t enough to keep pace. After putting up 5 points in the first five-plus minutes of the second half, Houston exploded to score 54 in under 19 minutes to finish it out, leading to a shocking road win.

Here’s a look back at some of the key plays and sequences from Wednesday in Salt Lake City. We’re largely focusing on offense, since the Rockets have risen from an offensive rating of 104.6 in their first six January games — good for No. 24 in the NBA over that span — to 115.5 over the current 3-1 road trip, which ranks No. 6 in the league in that run.
