Report: Brooklyn Nets to waive Two-Way guard Armoni Brooks

Michael Scotto reported on Saturday that the Brooklyn Nets will be waiving Two-Way guard Armoni Brooks. He averaged 4.2 points in 10 games.

The Brooklyn Nets are a franchise that is in transition as they are trying to rebuild after the trades of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. While the franchise is putting its future in the hands of players like Mikal Bridges and Cam Johnson, it looks like the Nets will be moving forward without one of their sharpshooters.

According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype on Saturday, Brooklyn will be waiving Two-Way guard Armoni Brooks after spending most of this season with the team’s G League affiliate, the Long Island Nets. Brooks signed his Two-Way contract with Brooklyn in July after playing well for the Nets in the summer league.

Brooks appeared in 10 games for Brooklyn this season, averaging 4.2 points and 1.8 rebounds per game while shooting 32.6% from the field and 34.4% from behind the three-point land. In five games for the Nets in the Las Vegas Summer League, Brooks averaged 17.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 50% from the floor and 47.6% from deep.

Nets’ Armoni Brooks on big game against Heat: ‘you gotta be ready’

Brooklyn #Nets guard Armoni Brooks went from practicing in Long Island to raining threes in Miami. Here’s how he was ready for the moment.

Brooklyn Nets guard Armoni Brooks has had a turbulent couple of days as he was practicing with Brooklyn’s G League affiliate, the Long Island Nets, on Tuesday morning, but found himself having to get on a plane destined for Miami just a few hours after practice to help the Nets beat the Heat on Wednesday.

Brooks, 25, is one of Brooklyn’s two-way players so he was expected to be one of the main players for the Nets’ G League team once he signed that deal. However, thanks to the injury bug biting Brooklyn heavily to start this season, Brooks had to step in for the Nets and he delivered.

In Brooklyn’s 109-105 win over Miami on Wednesday, Brooks scored 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field, including hitting 5-of-6 shots from deep. Not only did Brooks come off the bench shooting the ball well, he played so well that he was a +30, by far the best tally in that metric in the game.

Brooks was clutch for the Nets in a moment that would overwhelm most players who would be called into action in such short notice. Brooks answered the call and because of that, he gets his moment in the spotlight.

Here’s part of what he said when he asked about being ready for this opportunity and any future ones as well:

“It just all comes down to your preparation, your work ethic, teammates, and coaching staff having trust in you. And, whenever you get that opportunity. just trying your best to take advantage of it. You never know when it’s going to come but, you know when you hear your name called, you got to be ready and just go out there and execute.”

Can Armoni Brooks break into the Brooklyn Nets’ rotation?

Brooklyn Nets guard Armoni Brooks signed a Two-Way contract with the team after playing well in summer league. Can he earn playing time?

Brooklyn Nets guard Armoni Brooks has been trying to find his way in the NBA ever since he came into the league as an undrafted free-agent after the 2019 NBA Draft. Brooks, after performing well in the 2023 NBA2K24 Summer League, earned a Two-Way deal from Brooklyn to give himself a chance of being apart of a team looking to get back to the playoffs.

One of the topics to ponder with training camp a few weeks away is how likely Brooks is to break into the rotation for the 2023-24 season. Brooks, 25, comes into camp as one of the better shooters on the team and given how much shooting the Nets have lost this summer, he could find that the team needs his shooting at some point during the season.

One of the main obstacles in Brooks’ way to playing time is the amount of guards on the team already. The starting lineup will most likely be Ben Simmons/Spencer Dinwiddie, Mikal Bridges, and Cam Johnson while players coming off the bench will probably be players like Cam Thomas and Dennis Smith Jr.

Brooks has some skills that can be useful to Brooklyn, but it depends on how well he can shoot the ball early on so that he isn’t relegated to just playing in the G League for most of the season. If this past summer league is any indication, Brooks should be ready to contribute to a team with playoff aspirations.

Brooklyn Nets sign Armoni Brooks to Two-Way contract

Per the team’s official Twitter account on Tuesday, the Brooklyn Nets have signed guard Armoni Brooks to a Two-Way contract.

The Brooklyn Nets have completed another stage of their offseason now that the summer league has come to a close with the Nets making to the semi-final stage before losing in a tough battle to the Cleveland Cavaliers. One player is being rewarded for his efforts during the summer tournament.

On Tuesday, per their official Twitter account, Brooklyn has signed guard Armoni Brooks to a Two-Way deal after what he did in Las Vegas. Brooks, 25, played five games for the Nets in the summer league and averaged 17.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 50% from the field and 47.6% from three-point territory.

Brooks was one of the best shooters in the summer league and while he brings that to the table as his primary skill, he also displayed an ability to play effective defense in spurts. With all of the shooting that Brooklyn lost this offseason in Joe Harris, Patty Mills, and Seth Curry, signing Brooks could be the Nets’ way to making up for that.

Brooklyn Nets’ Armoni Brooks loves team telling him to keep shooting

After Sunday’s win over the New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets guard Armoni Brooks said that he loves his teammates and coaches telling him to keep shooting.

LAS VEGAS — Brooklyn Nets guard Armoni Brooks has been having a wonderful summer league so far as he is averaging 19 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 51.9% from the field and 52.6% from three-point land in two games. He says that his performance in the summer league thus far is only made possible due to the positive encouragement coming from his teammates.

“Yeah, just between my teammates and my coaches that you know, they just instilled confidence in me,” Brooks said when asked after Sunday’s 98-80 win over the New York Knicks about his play so far in the summer league. Brooks, 25, came into the NBA during the 2020-21 season with the Houston Rockets before playing for the Toronto Raptors in the 2021-22 campaign. Brooks spent the 2022-23 season with the Atlanta Hawks’ G League affiliate, the College Park Skyhawks.

“I just want to show like you know, improve my consistency (shooting the basketball) and just continuing to get better each day,” Brooks continued. From the way Brooks has played through two games of the summer league, it looks like he has shown growth in his offensive game and has even turned things up a notch on the defensive end of the floor.

Rockets have decision to make this week with open roster spot

Once Enes Freedom is formally waived, the Rockets can make a signing via his former roster spot. Bringing back Armoni Brooks seems to be one option, but there are other possibilities.

Shortly after Thursday’s trade agreement with Boston involving Daniel Theis and Dennis Schroder, the Houston Rockets made it clear that veteran big man Enes Freedom (formerly Kanter) would not be sticking around. His inclusion was simply for salary matching reasons and to ease the financial burden on the Celtics from their 2021-22 team payroll.

Yet, as of early Monday, Freedom had yet to be formally waived by Houston, per the NBA’s official transaction wire. There’s a reason for that: The trade, while announced, had yet to be finalized until late Sunday, owing to the process of completing physicals and paperwork.

In conjunction with the original announcement, the Rockets released DJ  Augustin and Armoni Brooks, since they were taking in three players in the deal (Schroder, Freedom, and Bruno Fernando) while sending out only one (Theis). Yet, they are only planning to keep two of those three from Boston. While Houston obviously never planned to keep Freedom, they could not formally “waive” him until his trade was fully complete.

As of Monday, that changes, and general manager Rafael Stone has a standard roster spot to hand out. One option, per The Athletic’s Kelly Iko, is simply bringing back Brooks. In two seasons with the Rockets, the 23-year-old guard averaged 7.8 points (33.5% on 3-pointers) and 2.0 rebounds in 19.8 minutes, and he already cleared waivers.

But there are other options, as well. In addition to scouring the G League, it should be noted that the Rockets (15-40) currently have the NBA’s third-worst record, which puts them in a lofty spot in the waivers order to potentially claim a player, as well — should someone they like have been waived by another team as part of a trade deadline move.

Another possibility is converting rookie guard Daishen Nix, who has excelled in the G League, from his current two-way contract to a multi-year deal (only allowed for players on standard roster spots, not two-ways). But even if that is Stone’s plan, the Rockets would still have a probable signing to make to fill what is currently Nix’s two-way slot.

The exact timetable is not yet clear, but with the Freedom transaction finally reaching the end stage, the wheels are now in motion.

Rockets release Armoni Brooks, DJ Augustin to complete Dennis Schröder trade

Houston is reportedly releasing Armoni Brooks and DJ Augustin to finalize the multi-player Dennis Schröder trade with Boston.

To complete the multi-player transaction bringing veteran guard Dennis Schröder from Boston to Houston at the NBA’s 2022 trade deadline, the Rockets are releasing Armoni Brooks and DJ Augustin.

To help match salaries and reduce their financial obligations, Boston attached sparingly used reserves Enes Freedom and Bruno Fernando to the trade that brought them Daniel Theis. Since the Rockets were then taking three players in the deal and sending out only one, two had to be released in order for the trade to be finalized.

However, the Rockets have already made it clear that Freedom will be quickly waived, and it’s possible that others in the deal could be as well. Since all are on expiring contracts, there are no long-term salary consequences if they do so, and it’s not as if the rebuilding Rockets (15-39) are trying to make a playoff push this season.

Thus, if Augustin and Brooks clear waivers — and Augustin, in particular, is almost certain to since his current salary of $7 million is higher than the cap space available to most teams — Houston could ultimately choose to bring them back, should both sides agree on a reunion.

Neither Augustin nor Brooks had been a consistent rotation player in recent weeks, and with both having little-to-no money guaranteed after this season, they were the obvious candidates to waive from the current roster. (The majority of players are already under contract for 2022-23.)

Augustin, a 34-year-old veteran point guard, averaged 5.4 points (40.6% on 3-pointers) and 2.2 assists in 15.0 minutes. Brooks, a 23-year-old wing prospect with shooting potential, averaged 6.2 points (30.0% on 3-pointers) and 2.0 rebounds in 16.8 minutes per game.

Final 2022 NBA All-Star votes for the Houston Rockets

Four NBA players voted reserve guard DJ Augustin as an All-Star, while John Wall — who has yet to play this season — also had a player vote. Here’s a rundown of how all Rockets fared.

Entering Friday, the Rockets (14-34) possessed the worst record in the Western Conference. Thus, in a rebuilding season, it should come as no surprise that Houston’s young squad will not have a player representative at the 2022 NBA All-Star Game.

Nonetheless, in a hybrid format weighting votes from fans, a media panel, and players, the Rockets did still have many players receiving votes. Fans accounted for 50 percent of the vote to determine the starters, which were announced Thursday, while players and media accounted for 25 percent each. Reserves will be named next week.

Though no Houston player received votes from the media panel, it’s become clear over the years of this voting process that many fans and players will go by personal favorites, rather than true basketball merit. Even John Wall, who has not played in a single game this season as part of a mutual decision, received votes from fans and even a player!

Here’s a rundown of how each Houston player fared in regards to votes from fans and players (none received any from media).

Anatomy of an upset: The biggest plays from Houston’s win at Utah

The young and rebuilding Rockets weren’t supposed to win at Utah, but led by the likes of Kevin Porter Jr. and Garrison Mathews, they found a way. Here’s a look back at their biggest plays.

Young and rebuilding teams like the 2021-22 Rockets aren’t supposed to beat perceived Western Conference contenders, and especially not on the road. But that’s exactly what Houston (14-32) somehow managed to do at Utah (29-16) on Wednesday night in Salt Lake City.

For the Rockets, who had five players score in double figures as part of a balanced effort, it was a third win in their last four games — all away from home. Sharpshooter Garrison Mathews led the way in the 116-111 win (box score) with a team-high 23 points off the bench, including 5-of-9 on 3-pointers (55.6%). But he had plenty of help, as well.

Veterans Bojan Bogdanovic (29 points, 5 rebounds), Rudy Gobert (23 points, 9 rebounds), and Jordan Clarkson (19 points, 4 assists) led the Jazz, but it wasn’t enough to keep pace. After putting up 5 points in the first five-plus minutes of the second half, Houston exploded to score 54 in under 19 minutes to finish it out, leading to a shocking road win.

Here’s a look back at some of the key plays and sequences from Wednesday in Salt Lake City. We’re largely focusing on offense, since the Rockets have risen from an offensive rating of 104.6 in their first six January games — good for No. 24 in the NBA over that span — to 115.5 over the current 3-1 road trip, which ranks No. 6 in the league in that run.

Trade deadline data: Houston Rockets player salaries for 2021-22, future seasons

With the Feb. 10 trade deadline rapidly approaching, here’s an updated look at who the Houston Rockets have on their salary books — and for how long.

With the Feb. 10 trade deadline for the 2021-22 NBA season rapidly approaching, here’s an updated look at who Houston has on its salary books. This list includes recent signings such as Trevelin Queen and no longer includes Danuel House Jr., who was waived in December.

As of Jan. 15, Garrison Mathews is the only player on the Rockets who is not eligible to be traded by the deadline. That’s because his new standard contract was not signed until late December.

As a result, general manager Rafael Stone heads into the deadline period with substantial flexibility. With the Rockets in the middle of a clear rebuilding program, they’re in a clear spot where veterans like Eric Gordon, Daniel Theis, David Nwaba, and perhaps even John Wall could be sent elsewhere to teams with more of a win-now emphasis.

Courtesy of the HoopsHype salary database, here’s a look at who Stone has on Houston’s books entering the Feb. 10 trade deadline. This list is sorted by annual salary, ranging from the most to the least.

Since nearly all NBA teams or at or above the salary cap during the season, teams have to send out close to much money in deadline trades as they take in, owing to the league’s collective bargaining agreement.
