Texas Football Recruiting: Longhorns offer current Kansas commit Garfield Lawrence

Texas recently offered three-star defensive end Garfield Lawrence, who originally committed to Kansas on Nov. 30.

Texas has recently sent an offer to Garfield Lawrence, a 2021 defensive end out of Tyler, Texas. The three-star prospect committed to Kansas on Nov. 30 but decided not to sign during early signing day. The Longhorns will be pushing hard to flip Lawrence before the Feb. 3 signing date.

Lawrence had an impressive senior season for Tyler Legacy High School and has garnered more attention because of it. He finished with 48 tackles, 12.0 tackles for a loss, seven sacks, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.

Flipping the defensive end would not be the first 2021 prospect Texas has taken from a Big 12 opponent. Three-star quarterback Charles Wright was once committed to Iowa State and three-star defensive tackle Byron Murphy flipped from Baylor.

New defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski and reported defensive line coach Bo Davis have just under a month to change Lawrence’s mind.

Lions DL coach Bo Davis leaving for the Texas Longhorns

Davis coached the Lions DL for the last three seasons

Detroit Lions defensive line coach Bo Davis is heading back to collegiate coaching. Davis has accepted a position with the Texas Longhorns programs, per numerous reports.

Davis coached the Lions defensive line for the last three seasons. He has ties to the Texas program; Davis was on the Longhorns staff from 2011-2013 under then-head coach Mack Brown.

Prior to joining the Lions, Davis coached for one season at Texas-San Antonio. More prominently, the former LSU defensive tackle also coached at LSU and Alabama, where he coached then-Lions DT A’Shawn Robinson and Da’Shawn Hand in college. He worked closely with Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban at Alabama, as did new Texas head coach, Steve Sarkisian.

A look at coaches that could be part of wholesale changes to Tennessee’s staff

A look at coaches that could be part of wholesale changes to Tennessee’s staff.

Tennessee (2-6, 2-6, SEC) has two games remaining in the 2020 regular season.

The Vols travel to Vanderbilt today and host Texas A&M Dec. 19 to conclude the regular season.

Third-year Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt could make wholesale changes within his coaching staff following the conclusion of the regular season.

Tennessee has three assistants with expiring contracts. Offensive line coach Will Friend, wide receivers coach Tee Martin and inside linebackers coach Brian Niedermeyer are signed through Jan. 31, 2021.

A vacant defensive line position will also be filled after Jimmy Brumbaugh was relieved of his duties during the season.

Ahead of the Tennessee-Vanderbilt game, Rush Propst, Pruitt’s former boss at Hoover High School, discussed changes that could happen for the Vols’ coaching staff after the season ends.

Propst discussed how Pruitt needs to decide the direction of the staff, offensively and defensively.

“I just think that he needs to make some adjustments to his staff,” Propst said of Pruitt on the show “Tennessee Two-A-Days.” “I think he will. I think he’ll look at it and make some decisions. He’s got to decide what he wants to do. What philosophy, what kind of offense do I want to be, he knows what he wants to do defensively, that is not going to change. Does he bring in a defensive guy, there are some available, to relieve him of what he has been doing, to give him a chance to be more of a head football coach and concentrate on other areas. I think that Jeremy is really good in a lot of other things, maybe from that perspective, or he maybe happy with his whole defensive staff. I’ve got Todd Watson on that staff, that I know helps out in certain ways. Shelton Felton worked for me. I have tremendous amounts of confidence in Shelton Felton. I told Jeremy two years ago you should hire Shelton Felton, he is that good.

“Offensively is where his most work has to come. He’s got to decide which way to turn, but before you go hiring coaches, he has to decide deep down in his heart, deep down in his mind and soul where do you want the offense to be. Do you want to be uptempo, spread, swinging it around the field and doing that kind of stuff, or do you want to be a ground and pound, play-action and run-combo — those kinds of things. Really, there can be a little bit of both.”

The entire show with Propst can be listened to here or below.

What Jeremy Pruitt’s defensive staff could look like in 2021

What Jeremy Pruitt’s defensive staff could look like in 2021.

November in college football means agents and schools begin to posture coaches for jobs in an attempt to better their programs and careers.

Will Muschamp was relieved of his duties as head coach at South Carolina Sunday. He is now a candidate to join Jeremy Pruitt’s coaching staff in 2021 at Tennessee.

Pruitt’s defensive staff could also see two other positions being filled for on-field capacities.

Tennessee’s defensive line unit has been vacant following Jimmy Brumbaugh being relieved of his duties during the 2020 season.

Inside linebackers coach Brian Niedermeyer’s contract is set to expire following the 2020 season on Jan. 31, 2021.

Tennessee (2-4, 2-4 SEC) will host Texas A&M (5-1, 5-1 SEC) Saturday at Neyland Stadium (3:30 p.m. EST).

The Vols look to end a four-game losing streak after opening the 2020 campaign with wins at South Carolina and against Missouri.

With four contests remaining in a 10-game, SEC-only regular season schedule, the coaching carousel will start to take place. Jeremy Pruitt has made changes to his staff following each season that he has been Tennessee’s head coach over the last three years.

Staff changes are part of the business, and one that can help strengthen a program from a coaching, development and recruiting standpoint.

Vols Wire previously highlighted when contracts end for Director of Athletics Phillip Fulmer, Pruitt and Tennessee’s nine on-field assistants. The NCAA permits ten on-field assistants as Pruitt will fill a vacant defensive line coaching position after relieving Jimmy Brumbaugh of his duties following a Week 4 loss to Kentucky.

Offensive line coach Will Friend, wide receivers coach Tee Martin and inside linebackers coach Brian Niedermeyer are signed through Jan. 31, 2021.

With three coaches set to have expiring contracts following the season, and a vacant defensive line position to fill, Vols Wire takes a look at potential candidates that could join Pruitt’s staff in 2021.

Watch: Several Lions position coaches mic’d up during 2020 training camp

With no fans allowed to attend the Detroit Lions 2020 training camp, the organization mic’d up several coaches during practices and put them into videos.

With no fans allowed to attend the Detroit Lions 2020 training camp, the organization has kept fans entertained throughout the last three weeks by creating unique videos — including micing up several coaches during practices and put together video segments.

Below are four videos of different Lions position coaches and a behind-the-scenes look at how they do their job during training camp.

Robert Prince, wide receivers coach

Prince joined the Lions organization in 2014 under then-coach Jim Caldwell, but coach Matt Patricia thought so highly of him that he kept him on staff when he took over in 2018.

Hank Fraley, offensive line coach

After 11 seasons in the NFL, Fraley joined the coaching ranks in 2012, joined the Lions as an assistant offensive line coach in 2018 under Patricia, and was promoted to offensive line coach this past offseason.

Bo Davis, defensive line coach

Davis began coaching high school football in 1998 and within three years was snatched up by Nick Saban at LSU. He would follow Saban to the Miami Dolphins, then on to Alabama, and after several more stints between the NFL and college ranks, Davis landed with the Lions in 2018. He is entering his third year as Patricia’s defensive line coach.

Steve Gregory, defensive backs coach

After an eight-year career playing safety in the NFL, Gregory began his NFL coaching career in Detroit, joining Patricia’s staff in 2018 as an assistant defensive backs coach. He was promoted to defensive backs coach this past offseason.
