Jets vs. Raiders: Possible history for Jamal Adams, test for New York’s cornerback duo among pregame storylines

Jets Wire breaks down New York’s Week 12 matchup with the Raiders with four pregame storylines to keep an eye on.

Don’t look now, but the Jets have a chance to make it three wins in a row when the Oakland Raiders come to town on Sunday afternoon.

Oakland has been one of the AFC’s resurgent teams so far this season, sitting at 6-4 and positioned well to challenge for a Wild Card spot. However, the Raiders have not been good away from home in 2019, giving New York a legitimate chance to climb to 4-7 after a disastrous start to the season.

What should Jets fans be keeping an eye on before kickoff? Let’s take a look at some intriguing pregame storylines.

Possible Presidential History

The man who calls himself the President will have a chance to make history when he takes the field against the Raiders on Sunday.

Jamal Adams is only two sacks away from tying Adrian Wilson’s NFL record for sacks in a single season by a defensive back (eight). Three sacks against Oakland would give him sole possession of the record.

Adams has been on fire lately, but given how solid the Raiders’ offensive line has been in 2019, it’s hard to see Week 12 being the week Adams makes history. Either way, he’s getting close to etching his name into the NFL record books only three years into his career.

Raiders poor road numbers among things to know in Jets’ Week 12 matchup

The Jets will face a red-hot Raiders team that doesn’t perform well outside of Oakland.

There’s a sense of optimism in the air as the Jets look for their fourth win of the season and third in as many weeks when they return home to take on the Raiders in Week 12.

New York returns home to play a Raiders team that is atrocious away from Oakland, and the implications of this game could affect the AFC playoff picture – just not for the Jets.

The Jets want to win now to prove to their fanbase they have the capability to compete in the future, but it won’t be easy against a team that’s been on a hot streak of its own. The Raiders have won their last three games behind a run-heavy approach and a defense that’s sacked the quarterback 10 times in the past two weeks to improve to 6-4.

Oakland will be the Jets’ biggest test since the Patriots in Week 7 despite the fact they lost games to both the Jaguars and the Dolphins before back-to-back wins over the Giants and Redskins. However, the Raiders have been atrocious away from home this season, which gives the Jets a legitimate chance to emerge victoriously on Sunday.

With that being said, here are four things to know about the Jets’ Week 12 game.

Raiders’ road woes

Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

When the Raiders play away from Oakland, they’ve been one of the worst teams in the league so far this season.

Oakland is 1-3 in road games this season and has allowed an average of 32.8 points in those games compared to the 24.6 they allow at home.

The Raiders’ defense has been particularly bad on the away from home, ranking near the bottom of the league in sack percentage (2.8%), yards per pass play (8.2), passer rating (118.5) and passing touchdown percentage (8.6). This bodes well for the Jets’ offense if they don’t turn the ball over and find the right spots to hit on Sunday.

Adam Gase praises rookie CB Bless Austin’s strong start

Jets head coach Adam Gase has high praise for rookie cornerback Bless Austin, who missed the past 14 months recovering from an ACL injury.

After being away from football for over a year, Jets rookie cornerback Bless Austin has jumped onto the scene with New York desperately thin at corner.

After an increasingly long layoff — 14 months without playing football — Austin’s dominant performances through his first two NFL games have caught the eye of many. That includes his head coach.

“He was driving us nuts on the scout team,” Adam Gase said following Thursday’s practice. “When you’re making receivers angry… you know he’s got something to him.”

Austin dons No. 31, the same number Antonio Cromartie did when he was a shutdown cornerback for the Jets. If Austin carves himself out a nice career like Cromartie, it would be a nice parting gift from Mike Maccagnan in his last draft.

Austin, who spent the first eight games on the Non-Football Injury list as he recovered from his second ACL surgery, has held up well in two starts. He has allowed only six catches for 59 yards as the closest defender, per NFL Next Gen Stats.

In his second NFL game, Sunday against the Redskins, Pro Football Focus graded him (77.2), the Jets’ best defensive player.

In a small sample size, Austin has proved himself a worthy candidate to watch down the stretch. If he can stay healthy, the Jets might have found themselves a second-round talent in the sixth-round.

The ACL injuries have taken a toll on Austin, but he’s emerging as a reliable cornerback when desperate times have called for desperate measures. On a whim, New York benched struggling CB Nate Hairston in favor of Austin in the midst of the Giants game. The Jets may never look back.

Bilal Powell, Bless Austin among 5 unsung heroes in Jets’ win over Redskins

The Jets saw contributors from a couple of young players and veteran backups that helped fuel their 34-17 win over the Redskins.

The Jets finally looked like a complete team in their Week 11 win. Yes, it was against the anemic Redskins with a rookie quarterback and bad secondary, but the Jets still executed brilliantly amid a lost season.

The offense looked unstoppable behind Sam Darnold’s career-high four passing touchdowns and Jamal Adams fueled a dominant defense that held the Redskins to three points before two garbage-time touchdowns late in the game.

It was a total team effort by the Jets to grab their third victory of the season. Though they won’t take the glory, here are five unsung heroes from the Week 11 win.

RB Bilal Powell

The Jets finally rushed for more than 100 yards in a game thanks to the play of Bilal Powell. The veteran rusher tallied 42 yards on only seven rushes with a healthy six yards per attempt. He spelled Le’Veon Bell on 16 snaps but provided a crucial spark to the offense early in the game.

Early in the second quarter, Powell rushed for 37 yards combined on three consecutive plays to push the Jets into the red zone. Sam Darnold hit Robby Anderson six plays later to put the Jets up 13-0.

Adam Gase mentioned his desire to lessen Bell’s workload to keep him fresh and keep defenses guessing. Powell – and Ty Montgomery – should be more involved down the stretch and can help make the Jets offense much more dynamic.

Jets rookie power rankings: Bless Austin turns in 2nd straight standout performance

Jets Wire breaks down New York’s rookie class in the latest edition of the rookie power rankings series.

Bless Austin’s Week 10 performance against the Giants might not have been a fluke after all.

Austin had another solid performance in New York’s dominant win over the Redskins on Sunday. Washington’s passing attack sputtered throughout the afternoon, and Austin was a big reason why as he excelled in coverage all game.

There’s no doubt that Austin has been Gang Green’s best rookie performer for the past two weeks. What about New York’s other neophytes, though? Let’s take a look at where they stand in the latest edition of Jets Wire’s rookie power rankings.

No. 5: TE Trevon Wesco

Last Week: No. 4

One week after recording the first catch of his career, Wesco couldn’t keep the good times rolling against the Redskins.

The West Virginia product did not appear in the box score against Washington. Ryan Griffin served as New York’s dominant tight end with five catches for 109 yards and a touchdown.

Jamal Adams’ continued dominance among 4 takeaways in Jets’ Week 11 win over Redskins

Jamal Adams added three sacks to his 2019 total and continues to show the NFL why he’s the best safety in the league.

The offense clicked, the defense looked unbeatable and the Jets finally put together their first complete game of the season against the hapless Redskins. The win also marked the first time the Jets won back-to-back games since Week 6 of 2018.

Aside from a few bad turnovers, everything worked for the Jets in this game. Sam Darnold and Jamal Adams looked terrific, and players like Ryan Griffin and Bless Austin stepped up in big ways on a team riddled by injuries. It’s not much to beat one of the worst teams in the league, but putting up 34 points helps with morale for the rest of the season.

Here are four takeaways from the Jets’ win.

Sam Darnold’s career game

This was the best game of Sam Darnold’s career. He picked apart the Redskins defense, found his receivers easily and made some tremendous throws on the run in classic Darnold fashion. He finished 19-30 for 293 yards and a career-high four touchdowns but also threw a signature interception off his back foot and into coverage.

Darnold continues to regain his confidence against putrid defenses but needs to clean up the mistakes that have plagued his career. It’s always encouraging to see him light up the stat sheet but not when he adds in some potentially-costly turnovers. Luckily, his interception only led to a Redskins field goal, but against a better offense, those turnovers will inevitably turn into touchdowns.

Jets should take a look at former Buccaneers CB Vernon Hargreaves

The Jets need cornerback help, and 2016 first-round pick Vernon Hargreaves could be the answer.

With the Jets woefully thin at cornerback, New York should take a look at the recently-released Vernon Hargreaves III to fill a position riddled by injury and poor play.

Hargreaves could be a low-risk, high-reward move by the Jets considering his youth and potential. The former 11th overall pick in the 2016 draft only recently turned 24 and was one of the top prospects coming out of Florida just three years ago. He opened his career with a stellar rookie season with the Buccaneers (76 tackles, nine passes defended and one interception), but injuries plagued Hargreaves the past two seasons and he was ultimately cut after a brutal beginning to 2019.

Bruce Arians and the Buccaneers were dismayed by Hargreaves’ lack of enthusiasm and effort this season, culminating in Arians benching Hargreaves after he didn’t hustle on a 55-yard pass play against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 10.

“He didn’t look like he was hustling to go in for a tackle,” Arians said of the play. “He was chasing somebody across the field, and he wasn’t running fast enough.”

Hargreaves, to his credit, didn’t back down from the criticism. He took full responsibility after the game for any perceived concerns about his effort.

“If that’s what coach saw that’s what he saw,” he said. “There’s no arguing with that – I need to hustle. Point blank. End of discussion.”

Hargreaves’ production has dropped off considerably since his rookie season and he has major injury issues – he missed all but one game in 2018 with a shoulder injury and seven games in 2017 with a hamstring injury. His 2019 hasn’t been much better, as he’s allowed a 111.9 passer rating when targeted (51st among cornerbacks), 12.3 yards per reception (37th), 5.7 receptions per game (77th), a catch rate of 63.8 percent (49th) and burned on 3.8 percent of his targets (71st), per PlayerProfiler.com

Those numbers are all terrible. Sadly, they’re also better than every other Jets cornerback other than Brian Poole, who plays 61 percent of his snaps in the slot.

The Jets need a player like Hargreaves to play on the outside, especially if Darryl Roberts can’t play. With Roberts hobbled by a calf injury and Trumaine Johnson on injured reserve, the only healthy cornerbacks the Jets have on the roster are Poole, Nate Hairston (who was benched in the second quarter of Sunday’s game), sixth-round rookie Bless Austin, and undrafted rookies Arthur Maulet and Kyron Brown. Austin played well for the Jets in his first game of the year, but he can’t be expected to fix a Jets secondary that’s been leaky all season.

Hargreaves won’t be a game-changer for the Jets, but he’ll be an infusion of young talent in a depleted secondary. He’ll also be looking to prove himself in search of another contract. The Buccaneers picked up Hargreaves’ $9.954 million fifth-year option this offseason, but it’s only guaranteed for injury. If the Jets claim him, they could easily try him out for a few games and see how he fares in the offseason before committing to that price tag for the 2020 season.

Hargreaves also has a few former teammates on the Jets – Poole and safety Marcus Maye both played with Hargreaves in Gainesville in 2015.

The Jets are grasping at straws in the secondary right now. Hargreaves isn’t the player many expected him to be after his rookie season, but he’s young and experienced and could be a short-term solution for the Jets defense heading into the back-half of its schedule.

Jets Rookie Power Rankings: Bless Austin blesses Gang Green in NFL debut

Jets Wire breaks down Gang Green’s rookie class following their performances against the Giants.

Not only did the Jets emerge victoriously in Week 10, but they also got blessed by one of their rookies.

Bless Austin made his NFL debut against the Giants and made an instant impact in his first professional action and appearance on a football field in almost two years. He wasn’t the only rookie who made noise for Gang Green on Sunday, though, as another member of New York’s rookie class made a substantial contribution for the first time this season.

So, where do the neophytes stand after the Jets’ second win of the season? Let’s find out in the latest edition of Jets Wire’s rookie power rankings series.

Demaryius Thomas among 6 unsung heroes from Jets’ win over Giants

Sam Darnold and Jamal Adams deserve all the credit for the win, but these veterans and rookies stepped up in a huge way in the Jets’ win.

The Jets’ 34-27 win over the Giants was a team effort. Almost everyone chipped in to help the Jets earn their second victory of the season, especially with an injury-riddled roster.

Sam Darnold and Jamal Adams deserve most of the credit for the win, but there were plenty of other players that helped at various positions on the field. Players stepped up for injured teammates or bad play and immediately contributed on both sides of the ball. A couple rookies even stood out.

Here are six unsung heroes from the Jets’ Week 10 win.
