Bills vs. Panthers: 3 keys to a Buffalo win

#Bills vs. #Panthers: 3 keys to a Buffalo win:

The Buffalo Bills playoff hopes hang in the balance as the team is set to begin their five remaining games in the regular season. They will face the Carolina Panthers in a must-win game at home on Sunday in Orchard Park.

Despite MVP-like heroics from QB Josh Allen and coming back from a 24-3 halftime deficit, the team would lose in a Week 14 overtime matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, thanks in part to poor officiating that carried some stench of the NFL’s market bias.

The Bills are putting the loss behind them with Carolina in front-and-center focus as they prepare for a familiar foe.

Panthers QB Cam Newton spent last year with the New England Patriots. While they are not active, former Jets QB Sam Darnold and former Bills QB Matt Barkley are both now Panthers. There is the history with GM Brandon Beane and HC Sean McDermott coming North to join the Bills from the Panthers organization. And fans are all too familiar with former Bill and Patriot CB Stephon Gilmore and his affinity for televised games.

Between all that and the former Panthers who have since joined Beane and McDermott with the Bills, the two clubs know each other well.

As far as who will come out on top, here are three keys to a win for the Bills (7-6) against the Panthers (5-8):

Bills at Buccaneers: 3 keys to a Buffalo win

#Bills at #Buccaneers: 3 keys to a Buffalo win:

The Buffalo Bills roller-coaster season has taken its latest turn this past Monday, in a 14-10 loss to the New England Patriots that featured only three passes by rookie QB Mac Jones, and 222 yards by the Pats running backs.

Now it’s on to face the defending Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road.

The Bills still have a good shot at making the playoffs and going on a run. If they can get going and stay consistent, that is.

The team has been alternating wins and losses for the past eight weeks, and could use some more stability in the win column.

After some forgettable small-score losses this season to teams like New England, Jacksonville, and Pittsburgh, along with some blowout losses to squads like Tennessee and Indianapolis, a win over the defending champs would be a breath of fresh air.

So here are three keys to a win for the Bills (7-5) against the Buccaneers (9-3):

Bills QB Josh Allen: ‘Everything we want is still in front of us’

#Bills QB Josh Allen: ‘Everything we want is still in front of us’

The Buffalo Bills lost a chilly game on Monday Night Football, falling 14-10 to the New England Patriots in a game that carried playoff implications for both teams.

New England has been on a surging win streak that has them in the AFC’s top seed for the postseason and ahead of Buffalo for first in the ACF East as well.

Despite the loss, the Bills still have a chance to win the division and to make the playoffs.

And QB Josh Allen knows it.

“Everything we want is still in front of us,” Allen said to the media after the game. “We gotta start winning games to accomplish what we want to accomplish. But like I said, everything’s is right in front of us, we kind of get to control our own destiny.”

Allen’s signature arm strength was on display throwing laser passes through 40 mph winds on a snowy night in Orchard Park. He was 15/30 passing with 145 yards and a touchdown while leading the team in rushing with 39 yards on six carries.

Yet the team struggled to capitalize on offense when opportunities presented themselves, including going only 1-4 in the red zone. In fact, New England’s defense limited Buffalo to a season-low 230 total yards of offense.

“There is a sense of urgency with us,” The QB continued, while voicing support for his teammates. “Very confident in our guys. We have some great leaders, we got some true professionals on this team, this can be one that can rip us apart or bring us together and I think the latter. I think we’ll get things rolling- I don’t think, I know for a fact that we will because of the makeup we have.”

He was sacked twice in the game and fumbled once, and Tyler Bass missed a 34-yard FG attempt in the 4th quarter.

Buffalo has gone 3-4 in its last seven games and is now 7-5 on the year with five contests left in the regular season. Coming up short in a close game against the division leader had head coach Sean McDermott expressing his resolve for the team to do better.

“Guys are frustrated, I’m frustrated but we have to find a way to move on,” McDermott said during his postgame press conference. “We’ve been inconsistent. Did we have opportunities to win the game? Darn right we did. We have to ask why.”

“You got to coach better, you got to play better, it’s not just one person it’s all of us,” he added.

The team will have the week to right the ship before heading back to Florida next Sunday, December 12th for the final time this season. There they’ll face a familiar foe in long-time Patriot quarterback and UGG Boots enthusiast Tom Brady and his new team, the Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Bills vs. Patriots: 3 keys to a Buffalo win

#Bills vs. #Patriots: 3 keys to a Buffalo win:

The Bills are coming off a good bounce-back win in New Orleans against the Saints and preparing to begin the remaining six games of the season with the playoffs in focus.

Standing in their way will be the New England Patriots, who are coming off a big victory of their own against one of the AFC’s top clubs in Tennessee, and have been on a winning streak as of late.

Buffalo is gearing up to host the first of two remaining scheduled matchups against their division rival in this week’s nationally televised Monday Night Football broadcast.

With the Patriots in first place in the AFC East, those games will have more at stake as the division crown and a guaranteed playoff spot are on the line.

With that, here are three keys to a win for the Bills (7-4) against the Pats (8-4):

Bills CB Dane Jackson: ‘It’s a huge opportunity’

#Bills CB Dane Jackson: ‘It’s a huge opportunity’

Buffalo Bills CB Dane Jackson spent most of his rookie season on the practice squad though he shined when he had opportunities in limited gameplay in 2020 after being drafted in the seventh round out of Pitt.

He has continued to see more field time in his second season and will start on Monday in the absence of star corner Tre’Davious White.

“Oh, it’s a huge opportunity,” Jackson said to the media on Friday. “I’ve been telling myself since it happened, this is the opportunity of a lifetime. This is what I’ve been dreaming of. This is what I’ve been working for. Obviously, I didn’t want it to happen the way it happened, but this is my once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so I’m ready to take advantage of it.”

Jackson has been very conscious and aware of his role during his time in Buffalo, as well as the importance of preparing for moments like this one.

“I’m a backup, so ultimately, I have to prepare like a starter because you never know what’s going to happen here or there,” he added. “There’s nothing changing in my routine, I just keep getting more confidence from the guys that’s been out there all season. I just roll with the punches.”

Jackson, who has had some experience filling in for White, will play the short field-side opposite Levi Wallace who will cover the wide side. Jackson’s background with zone and man-to-man coverage will come in handy as he’s able to adjust as needed similar to White.

He also voiced his support for fellow starter Wallace, saying “if something bad happens he’ll be right there to pick me up and I’ll do the same.”

In many ways, Jackson’s experiences both on and off the field throughout his young life have molded the work ethic and toughness he’s become known for.

“My first four years of college or starting my senior year of high school I lost four of my closest friends you know back to back to back to back. And at some point, some people may want to give up but that just made me push harder and made me want to see myself succeed even more. So I use that as fuel to the fire,” Jackson shared.

“You just have to be strong-minded. Growing up I faced a lot of adversity so this is nothing different. You just have to be strong-minded and deal with anything that comes your way. As a backup, you don’t know if you’ll play one play or 99 plays so you just have to be ready at any moment.”

It’s that preparatory mindset and readiness mentality that has caught the eye of his teammates like Bills safeties Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer.

“We love Dane, just what he’s been able to do the last couple of years, coming here and working every day,” Hyde said during Friday’s press session. “Whenever his number is called, he goes to work. And we have a saying around here, work while you wait. While you’re waiting to get in the game, you’re putting in the time, the film work, the film study, the fieldwork, all that type of stuff. So, Dane’s been a part of that process. And he understands that he has to step in.”

He continued to share expectations and Jackson’s role with the team.

“Dane’s been a part of that process and he understands that he has to step in. We’re not asking him to be Tre’Davious White by any means, we’re not asking him to be All-Pro and shut down every single receiver and follow the best receivers and do all that type of stuff. We’re just asking him to do his job and everybody else on the defensive side step up your role up a little bit more,”

Hyde’s fellow safety, Poyer echoed a similar sentiment in complimenting Jackson as a teammate ahead of Monday’s Nationally televised matchup with the division-rival Patriots.

“I mean he knows the system,” Poyer said during his media session. “He trusts the guys around him. We tell him all the time, he’s not out there alone. He doesn’t gotta do anything other than be Dane Jackson. He’s got his teammates around him. … We’ve got all the faith in the world in Dane. He’s come in and he’s made a lot of plays.”

While Jackson’s received these votes of confidence from his coaches as well, he’s also had some additional support in his game preparations. From his Mother, that is.

“She’s been texting me every day but it’s not like other people texting me like ‘you ready, you ready?’ She’s just making sure I’m good, making sure my mind’s right, making sure my body’s right and she just tells me like just make sure you’re good like don’t worry about what other people say you know we got a big job to do come Monday night so just block out all of the noise and be ready.”

Sean McDermott ‘confident’ Tre White will bounce back, Bills know he can’t be replaced

Sean McDermott ‘confident’ Tre White will bounce back, #Bills know he can’t be replaced:

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbw1j59gmjw5gdj player_id=none image=https://billswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Buffalo Bills lost one of their star players during last week’s Thanksgiving Thursday win over the New Orleans Saints.

Cornerback and all-around NFL standout talent Tre’Davious White came down at an awkward angle while making a defensive play in coverage in front of his home-state crowd, and left the game for medical evaluation.

As results of those evaluations came in over the past week, so did the news that White had a torn ACL that would keep him out the rest of the season.

The Bills pass defense ranks No. 2 in the league as they enter into Week 13, they are also No. 2 in scoring and the top defense in yards allowed.

White has played a key role in making that possible.

“He’s a match-up guy. It’s hard to find those guys in our league,” defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said to the media this week. “But he’s allowed us to do some things on defense because of his ability to eliminate other people’s number one receiver. So there’s some big shoes to fill.”

White plays the short side of the field across from CB Levi Wallace who plays on the wide side. While the Bills play a lot of zone coverage, he will at times be tasked with key matchups and assigned to follow the opposing teams’ top receiver one-on-one.

When asked if there’s any way to quantify the loss of Tre White, the DC’s response was simply, “Yeah, I don’t know if there is.”

The ability the star CB has to contain those top receivers has been a big part of the Bills success on the defensive side of the ball.

In fact, when targeted he allows the fourth-lowest passer rating in the league among all CBs with 25 or more targets. He’s been a Pro Bowler and an All-Pro each of the last two seasons and has not allowed a single touchdown pass this year.

As great as he has been on the field,  it’s who is off it that has amplified the impact losing him to injury has had.

“It was emotional for our players and coaches because Tre is just a great, great individual, not just a terrifically talent and football player, but he’s a tremendous person as well,” Frazier added. “It was definitely emotional, when I saw him, when other guys saw him as well. We wanted to encourage him and just lift him up and let him know that we’re going to be there to support him through this process.”

While the loss of White is a blow to the team, head coach Sean McDermott is confident in the young CB’s ability to fully recover.

“I’m confident that Tre will return to form,” McDermott said during his mid week press session. “And he’s going to get through this time and space in his life and his career, and look back on it one day and say what he learned from it.”

Bills confident in ‘next man up’ Dane Jackson

#Bills confident in ‘next man up’ Dane Jackson:

Cornerback Tre White went down and out for the season with an ACL tear last week, leaving a significant void for the Bills to fill on defense.

It’s going to take a team effort as well as a solid performance for whoever plays in his absence to keep the teams’ defense at the high-ranking performance level they’ve played at this season.

“It is next-man-up, regardless,” head coach Sean McDermott said via the Bills website this week. “But I think collectively as a team, we’ve got to take our game another level.”

That “next” player for the Bills is none other than second-year CB Dane Jackson, a seventh-round 2020 NFL draft selection from the University of Pittsburgh, taken at 239th overall.

“I think Dane Jackson is one of those guys who will step up,” defensive coordinator Frazier said to the press. “He’s the next man up and he’ll do a good job for us. But to say that he will play at the level of Tre’Davious, that would be, misleading for sure.”

Early returns on Jackson have been promising, however. In limited action over five games as a rookie, he had two starts, one interception as well as a fumble recovery to go with 15 tackles.

This season he’s played in every one of the Bills’ 11 games and on a total of 18% of their defensive snaps this season. That has included experience stepping in for White in the game against the Saints, as well as for starter Levi Wallace against the Dolphins when he was injured in Week 2.

Jackson caught the eye of the Bills front office and coaches during draft scouting on account of his physical style of play in defending passes as well as the run, and experience in man and zone coverage as a three-year starter at Pitt.

“He’s always been a guy, coming from Pitt, that has had our DNA in terms of gritty, resilient, player that’s tough, and he’s up for the challenge, I know that,” McDermott added. “We have a lot of confidence in Dane Jackson.”

The head coach wasn’t alone in his confidence in Jackson, as Frazier threw more support behind him as well.

“Even the game on Thursday night, when he stepped in, he has real good poise and a good feel for the game,” Frazier said. “And I think that helps him not to get overly concerned or to stress himself out to where he’s not playing to the level that we expect him to. So just that overall composure and that confidence that he has, and he’s a talented guy as well.”

As opposing QB’s may target him, Jackson will aim to hold his own across from starter Levi Wallace, who also received an encouraging assessment from his DC.

“We just want him to continue to play at a high level like he’s been playing,” Frazier added. “He’s been playing really well for us. He doesn’t really have to change and really get out of body, just be himself and continue to approach things the way he has.”

Second-year cornerback Cam Lewis, who has spent time inactive and on the practice squad and also filled in for White playing 47 snaps in the Bills win against Houston, will be next up on the depth chart behind Wallace and Jackson. The team also signed corners Tim Harris and Greg Stroman to their practice squad, they’ll join a CB depth chart mix that includes Taron Johnson, his backup in the slot Siran Neal, and undrafted rookies Nick McCloud, and Olaijah Griffin.

Jackson will have a trial-by-fire in the coming weeks including two matchups against the New England Patriots coming up starting with this week’s Monday Night Football game, as well as against Tom Brady and the Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Sean McDermott was straightforward in regards to the challenge that lies ahead for Jackson during Thursday’s media session as well.

“We’ve got a lot of confidence in Dane. But, look, he’s going to get tested. That’s just the reality of the situation.”

Dawson Knox breaks single season franchise record for TE touchdowns

Dawson Knox breaks single season franchise record for TE touchdowns:

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbw1j59gmjw5gdj player_id=none image=https://billswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Bills TE Dawson Knox is having the type of breakout season some have speculated and many have hoped he’d have in his young career.

A 2019 third-round pick out of Ole’ Miss, he spent his offseason working with Tight End University and a vision specialist, looking to take the next step in his progression.

With career highs in catches (31) as well as receiving yards (415) and six games remaining in the regular season, he’s been productive, to say the least. Last night alone, he hauled in two of QB Josh Allen’s four touchdown tosses.

One which came in the first quarter while facing a small mob of Saints defensemen at the goal line, and a second on a 24-yard pass in the third quarter that ended with a short hop hurdle of a defender into the endzone.

With that second TD, Knox achieved a milestone by becoming the franchise leader for touchdowns in a single season by a tight end with his seventh score on the year.

With the first score, he had joined a four-way tie (6) with past Bills TE’s Pete Metzelaars (1992), Jay Riemersma (1998), and Scott Chandler (2011-2012.)

Knox even added what would have been a third one on the day when he caught a seven-yard pass with 22 seconds left in the second quarter for a TD that got nullified by a penalty on G Ike Boettger. It would have helped the offense too, considering Josh Allen’s first red-zone interception of his career came on the play that followed.

“Thankfully I didn’t celebrate too much,” Knox said while addressing the media, “because turning around and seeing the flag, that’s always frustrating. But it’s just something that happens. We’ve got to bounce back from it.”

The 25-year-old has made the leap this year from a development talent that occasionally flashed some big-play potential to an impact player on the Bills offense. He credits his game preparation as a key to his success on the field.

“Just doing whatever you’re asked to do every week whether it’s one catch or ten, whether it’s zero targets or ten, ” Knox added. “With the quarterback that we have, the players that we have like there’s gonna be opportunities every single weekend and you just gotta be ready when it comes your way.”

Coach Sean McDermott was in high spirits after the game and had some fun fielding questions about what’s been different for Knox this season.

“I think he’s using different hair products this year than he did in the years before,” McDermott said during his press session. “He’s just confident. I think over half this game is mental and I think his confidence is where it needs to be this year, he’s had success and he’s been able to bounce back from some moments where he needed to reset and I think that shows how mentally tough he is.”

Knox responded with a laugh when told of his coach’s quip about his hair. “That’s funny,” the TE replied. “He really said that? You think he’s jealous?”

As for the TE, himself? He was plenty thankful after the game.

Bills at Saints: 3 keys to a Buffalo win

#Bills at #Saints: 3 keys to a Buffalo win:

The Bills head to New Orleans this week to face the Saints in one of this year’s Thanksgiving Day game matchups.

The team and their fans both want to put recent losses to the Colts and Jaguars behind them, so a bounce-back win could them do just that.

And as we know from their last appearance on Thanksgiving Day, a 26-15 win over Dallas in 2019, Josh Allen and company want to be the ones holding Turkey legs in the winner’s circle.

Both teams are looking to redeem themselves after losing games by similar lopsided scores this past Sunday, and Buffalo is aiming to shake off a few rocky performances overall with a short week victory.

Buffalo Bills set to face another backup Week 12

#Bills set to face another backup Week 12

The New Orleans Saints have lost starting quarterback Jameis Winston for the season with a torn ACL suffered during Sunday’s win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Bills are set to play the Saints in Week 12 at the Superdome in New Orleans. It will be Buffalo’s Thanksgiving Day game.

It’s the second time the Bills will face a backup this season after an injury forced Tyrod Taylor to miss Houston’s Week 4 game the Bills won, 40-0.

Jacoby Brissett stepped in for an injured Tua Tagovailoa early in Week 2 as well. The Bills shut the Dolphins out, 35-0.

Replacing Winston will be either Trevor Siemian or Taysom Hill. Hill has played in just five games this season. He’s attempted four passes, completing three, the lone incompletion was an interception.

Siemian stepped in for Winston completing 16-of-29 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown last week. It was his first appearance this year.

Hill went 3-1 in four starts at quarterback last season.

Siemian was last a full-time starter in 2017 for the Broncos, he started one game for the Jets in 2019 attempting just six passes before injury.

Hill was battling a concussion last week, that’s why he was not the one to replace Winston. As of Thursday, Hill has been cleared to play in their Week 9 game against the Atlanta Falcons.

It has not yet been announced who will start that game. The Bills will be taking notes.
