Skip Johnson, Sooners earn first Big 12 championship

OU baseball has won the regular season Big 12 championship, after the Sooners defeated the Baylor Bears, and Oklahoma State’s game against Texas Tech was cancelled.

The Oklahoma Sooners baseball team has captured the regular season title in the Big 12 Conference for the first time in school history.

OU took down the Baylor Bears in seven innings on Saturday night, winning by a score of 19-7. It was the final game of a three game series between the two teams.

The No. 17 Sooners swept the Bears, with the second and third wins coming on Senior Day at L Dale Mitchell Park.

[autotag]Skip Johnson[/autotag]’s team won the first conference title for the program since the Sooners won the Big Eight in 1995. It’s the school’s 23rd baseball conference championship overall.

“The accomplishment belongs to the players,” said Sooners head coach Skip Johnson. “You play one pitch at a time, that’s our mantra. We play one pitch at a time and one game at a time and that’s what we have to continue to do. That’s what we will continue to talk about, continue to work on and continue to practice.”

 

Oklahoma originally clinched a share of the Big 12 title with the sweep of Baylor. Then, Oklahoma State’s third game against Texas Tech was canceled due to weather on Sunday. This gave Sooners the conference crown outright.

OU will face Xavier on the road on Tuesday afternoon before the final series of the regular season against Cincinnati. That series against the Bearcats is scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Queen City.

The Big 12 Championship Tournament will take place from May 21-25 in Arlington, Texas.

Big 12 football teams ranked by conference championships

Four football programs are still looking for their first Big 12 conference championship, while Oklahoma has won more than every Big 12 school combined.

The Big 12 conference was formed in 1996 and there’s been a few changes over the years in regards to determining how each football team can reach the championship game.

From 1996-2010, the conference champions were determined in a head-to-head matchup held at the end of the regular season. At this time, the Big 12 Championship game featured the Big 12 North Division champion against the Big 12 South Division champion.

Between 2011-2016, it was a round-robin regular-season format among all conference members. However, there were no tiebreaking procedures put in place until the 2015 season. This caused a few co-champions from 2012-2014.

Beginning in 2017, the Big 12 championship game now features the two teams with the best conference records. Oklahoma has dominated the conference to a point that they have more Big 12 football titles than every other conference opponent combined.

West Virginia joined the conference in 2012, therefore it’s not too surprising to see the Mountaineers near the bottom of the list. Take a look at where each football program ranks in terms of Big 12 titles below. Keep in mind that former conference foes Nebraska, Texas A&M, Missouri and Colorado are not included.

WATCH: Texas celebrates Big 12 title in locker room

The 2021 Texas Longhorns won the Big 12 Championship. See their reaction from inside the locker room.

The Texas Longhorns won their first Big 12 Championship in program history on Saturday.

In what has been an up and down season after last year was cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Longhorns finally got to witness head coach Shaka Smart cut down the net.

Afterwards, the team went to their locker room to celebrate together where Texas forward Royce Hamm gave fans an inside view of the locker room to share with fans in the celebration.

It was their seventh time playing in the conference finals, but the Longhorns finally get to bring home the hardware covered in netting.

The next step for the Texas is the NCAA Tournament, where it looks like their seeding could potentially change. The Longhorns were originally projected as a four seed, but after winning the conference championship in what is arguably the toughest in the country, it could see them rise to a three seed.

For the time being, Texas fans certainly deserve to celebrate.
