3 reasons why Oklahoma lost to Iowa State, 81-68

Oklahoma (11-4, 2-1) will have to wait another year to get Lon Kruger his first win at Iowa State (8-7, 1-2) after losing 81-68.

Oklahoma (11-4, 2-1) will have to wait another year to get Lon Kruger his first win at Iowa State (8-7, 1-2) after losing 81-68. The Sooners have not won in Ames, IA., since 2012.

Here are three reasons why Oklahoma dropped its first conference game of the season.

EARLY & NOT SO OFTEN

Oklahoma took shots very early in the shot clock without much success. Shooting well overall, the Sooners settled early for shots, scoring just 22 points in the paint.

Aside from the lack of paint production, Oklahoma was bodied on the glass with just 3 offensive boards to Iowa State’s 23 defensive boards.

TURNOVERS KILL

With the exception of baseball, the longer you keep possession of the ball, the better off you are. The Sooners could not hold on to the rock tonight, coughing it up 15 times, allowing the Cyclones to score 32 points off of the turnovers.

THE HILTON CURSE?

Oklahoma is win-less in the Lon Kruger era in Ames, IA. With Iowa State being win-less through two conference games, the Cyclones may have simply been due for a win. It’s a rarity that a team shooting 48% from the floor loses a game, but the Sooners proved the exception to the rule. Both teams shot 48%, however, the Cyclones outshot Oklahoma 67 to 44 and made 32 shots to the Sooners’ 21.

Both coming off of losses, Oklahoma takes on No. 3 Kansas on Tuesday as Top Daug makes his much-awaited return. The game can be seen on ESPN at 8p.m. CT.

Oklahoma (11-3, 2-0) is off to a great start in conference play with wins over Kansas State and Texas. The Sooners play their second road game of the week as they head up to Iowa to take on Iowa State (7-7, 0-2).

After winning just two Big 12 road games last season, Lon Kruger’s squad immediately has a chance to tie their road win total. Oklahoma earned their first win in Austin, TX., since 2015 earlier in the week.

With a short turnaround and a roster full of young players who may not have experienced back-to-back road games on two days rest, the Sooners have to be careful not to fall victim to the Cyclones.

4 takeaways from Oklahoma’s 72-62 win over Texas

Oklahoma (11-3, 0-2) got their first win in Austin, TX., since 2015 over Texas (10-4, 0-2) Wednesday night.

Oklahoma (11-3, 0-2) got their first win in Austin, TX., since 2015 over Texas (10-4, 0-2) Wednesday night. Road wins in the Big 12 are a rarity for the Sooners as tonight’s win is just the fifth over the past four seasons. Not only do the Sooners head home with a win, but a confirmed sense of confidence.

DE’VION HARMON, WELCOME TO THE SHOW

Freshman guard, De’Vion Harmon has not performed nearly to his potential so far this season. He was removed from the starting lineup four games ago but has since blossomed into a fantastic spark off the bench for Lon Kruger’s team. His talents were on full display against the Longhorns as he came out after halftime locking down his assignments defensively, forcing turnovers and getting Oklahoma into transition on multiple possessions. Harmon finished the game with nine points (all of which came in the second half), three rebounds, an assist and three of the Sooners’ seven steals.

JAMAL BIENIEMY WOKE UP

After a promising freshman season, Jamal Bieniemy began the 2019-20 season in a rut. That changed Wednesday night. Bieniemy, much like Harmon, was all over the court, harassing Longhorns from baseline to baseline in his 38 minutes. Not only was his defensive prowess on display but so was his shooting abilities. He finished the game with 11 points, trailing just Kristian Doolittle who had 22. Bieniemy was effective with his shots, knocking down four of six from the floor while also leading the team in assists with four.

KRISTIAN DOOLITTLE IS A NIGHTMARE

The 2018-19 Big 12 most improved player showed that he is a walking mismatch, once again. His team-leading 22 points on eight of 16 shooting included two three-pointers that kept the Texas defense stretched out all night. Doolittle also led the team in rebounds with eight.

OKLAHOMA CAN PLAY DEFENSE

Alex Grinch eat your heart out. The Sooners put a stranglehold on the Longhorns offense, allowing them to shoot just 38% from the field and 28% from deep. not only was Oklahoma forcing tough shots but they were in Texas’ back pocket for all 40 minutes, forcing 12 turnovers.

The Sooners are back in action on Saturday as they face off against Iowa State on the road. The game can be seen on ESPN2 at 7p.m. CT.

Oklahoma gets first win on the road at Texas since 2015, win 72-62

The Sooners walked into the lion’s den and earned their fourth Big 12 road win in four seasons.

Oklahoma walked into the lion’s den and earned their fifth Big 12 road win in four seasons. On the backs of coming-out performances from De’Vion Harmon and Jamal Bieniemy, Oklahoma (11-3, 2-0) defeated Texas (10-4, 0-2) 72-62.

The backcourt for the Sooners has been underwhelming at best so far this season. Bieniemy and Harmon had high expectations coming into the season and lived up to those expectations in Austin, Texas, tonight.

Despite losing his starting spot over the past four games, Harmon has embraced the role, sparking Oklahoma in the second half with nine points, three rebounds, an assist and three of the Sooners’ seven steals.

Bieniemy also seemed to have woken up from his shooting slumber, scoring 11 points on four of six shooting alongside three rebounds and team-high four assists.

Outside of Bieniemy and Harmon, the usual suspects did work offensively. Austin Reaves put up 10 points including a halftime buzzer-beater to give the Sooners a one-point lead before heading to the locker room.

Kristian Doolittle led the team in scoring and rebounding once again with 22 points and eight boards. His scoring abilities proved a mismatch for the Longhorns all night as he knocked down two 3-pointers and was able to shoot well from mid-range.

With three primary performances for the Sooners, Oklahoma as a team played lights-out defensively. The Sooners allowed Texas to make just 28 percent of their shots while hauling in 30 defensive boards to Texas’ nine offensive boards.

The 72-62 win is the first win in Austin for Oklahoma since 2015.

The Sooners are back in action on Saturday when they head up to Ames, Iowa, to take on the Cyclones at 7 p.m. CT.

Three reasons why Oklahoma beat Texas on the road 72-62

Kristian Doolittle and Austin Reaves were huge, but there are three reasons why Oklahoma downed Texas 72-62 on Wednesday night.

Oklahoma did it.

The Sooners won its first road game in Austin, Texas, against rival Texas for the first time since 2015.

Oklahoma got its normal contributions from Kristian Doolittle and Austin Reaves—32 points combined on 13-of-27 shooting—and played a complete game to down the Longhorns.

Doolittle and Reaves were huge, but there are three reasons why Oklahoma downed Texas 72-62 on Wednesday night.

CLOSING IT OUT

Oklahoma closed out the first and second halves on runs.

The Sooners finished the first half on a 14-4 run over the final 7:15 minutes. They finished the second half on a 22-11 run over the final 9:14 minutes.

DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE

Texas was not the best shooting team in the country heading into Wednesday’s contest. Oklahoma, though, made it very difficult on its biggest rival.

The Longhorns shot just 38 percent of the floor, including 28 percent from three.

HELLO JAMAL BIENIEMY, DE’VION HARMON

Oklahoma has been looking for contributions from others not named Kristian Doolittle, Austin Reaves and Brady Manek. The Sooners got it from its two promising young players.

Jamal Bieniemy and De’Vion Harmon have been solid on the defensive side of the floor for Lon Kruger this season. The two helped on the offensive side Wednesday night, scoring 20 combined points on 8-of-12 shooting.

Oklahoma will take on Iowa State in Ames, Iowa, on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN2.

3 keys for Oklahoma against Texas

Oklahoma (10-3, 1-0) takes on Texas (10-3, 0-1) in the Sooners’ first Big 12 road game of the season.

Oklahoma (10-3, 1-0) takes on Texas (10-3, 0-1) in the Sooners’ first Big 12 road game of the season.

Oklahoma comes off a solid, hard-fought 66-61 win over Kansas State last Saturday and is amidst a three-game winning streak. The Sooners were picked to finish eighth in the Big 12 but so far this season has looked better than expected.

In order to beat Texas on the road, which is never an easy task no matter the opponent in the Big 12, Oklahoma needs to do three things.

KNOCKDOWN OPEN LOOKS

The Sooners have no problems getting open looks at the basket. However, they do have a problem making open shots. Shooting 30.7% from deep as a team is not awful but it is not great, especially with more than capable shooters that Oklahoma has. Making open shots will be huge towards this team’s performance and confidence not only tonight but moving forward as well.

SHARE THE WEALTH

The Sooners have three of their starting five averaging double-digit scoring with Austin Reaves, Kristian Doolittle and Brady Manek all inside the Big 12’s top-10 scoring leaders. De’Vion Harmon, Alondes Williams, and Jamal Bieniemy, the other three scoring options for Oklahoma all average under eight points a game. If the Sooners want to continue their win-streak and perform at a higher level, Bieniemy, Harmon, and Williams all need to knock down looks when given the opportunity.

DEFEND LIKE NO ONE IS WATCHING

If there has been one thing that has been consistent over the last three games, it has been the Sooners’ defense. Oklahoma has allowed their opponents over that stretch a combined 185 points. The Sooners kept UTRGV to 41.2%, Kansas State to 34.9% and UCF to 31.3% from the field. If Kruger’s crew can continue their premium defending, Oklahoma will be in good shape.

The Sooners and Longhorns are set to tip-off at 8 p.m. CT on ESPN2. for full broadcast details, click here.

Texas basketball kicks off home Big 12 play against Oklahoma

Losing their Big 12 opener, UT begins home play vs Oklahoma. Splitting games last year, UT will be looking to get an early win against OU.

Starting the season out strong in the non-conference, Texas basketball looked like they had some hope going into Big 12 play in 2019-2020. That hope was quickly snatched away on Saturday as Texas dropped their conference opener to Baylor, 59-44.

While the defense played well, limiting the Bears to 31% shooting from the floor, the offense was the issue as Jericho Sims led the way with 13 points. Of the nine players who go game action for the Longhorns, only five of them scored. Sims and Courtney Ramey scored a combined 24 points, 54% of Texas’ total points.

Luckily, the Oklahoma defense has not been the best this season, giving up nearly 70 points a game. Where the Sooners really struggle is on the glass, ranking 150th in the country in total rebounds.

To pick up a victory at the Frank Erwin Center, the Longhorn offense is going to have to play better against the poor Oklahoma defense. Top scorers Andrew Jones and Matt Coleman need to have more than 18 total points.

Winning their Big 12 opener against Kansas State, Oklahoma heavily relied on Austin Reaves and Kristian Doolittle. Scoring 21 and 19 points respectively, the two are the Sooners’ top scorers to this point in the season.

It is not a must-win game for Texas, but it is really close to one. Head Coach Shaka Smart’s seat is scorching hot and picking up a win against the rival Sooners would cool it off for now. Defending home court in conference play is one of the easiest ways to pave your way to the NCAA tournament.

Going 1-1 against each other in 2018-2019, a new season is here for the Red River Rivalry basketball edition. Since the creation of the Big 12, the Longhorns lead the series against the Sooners, 26-25. If Oklahoma can win on Wednesday, it would tie that record up with the chance to take the lead in March’s matchup.

No matter the sport, it is always fun to beat the Sooners. Getting revenge from the football season in the fashion of basketball would be a good form of payback.

Texas Longhorns Women’s Basketball Look For Redemption

The Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team looks for redemption against the Iowa State Cyclones.

The Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team is looking to rebound tonight against Iowa State after a narrow defeat at the hands of Texas Christian. The lady frogs escaped with a 65-63 victory. During that game TCU came out strong in the third quarter outscoring Texas 23-13 and took a five-point lead into the final quarter.

The loss was even more disappointing coming off the heels of the Longhorns upset win over then number one ranked Stanford. Joyner Holmes tried to help carry the team in which Charli Collier wasn’t as effective as she has been in recent games with just five points and seven rebounds. In that game, Texas shot just 56.3 percent from the line on 16 attempts. That is the difference between winning and losing.

Last season Iowa State and Texas split their season series at a game a piece, each winning on the road. They met again in the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament where the Longhorns fell to the Cyclones 75-69. Texas women’s basketball team will be looking for a bit of retribution against Iowa State in this game.

The Cyclones were able to win their Big 12 opener against Texas Tech 96-66. Texas will be looking to slow down that offense from another huge outing. Iowa State has eclipsed 80 points in five of their 12 games this year. Collier will be looking to get back to her double-double ways against Iowa State tonight in Ames, Iowa.
