LSU pitcher named as one of the top 10 transfers by Baseball America

Luke Holman finished 2023 with a 7-4 record and a 3.67 ERA in 81 innings pitched.

Baseball America released its list of the top 10 transfers heading into this season, and there is one LSU Tiger that made the list. [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag], a right-handed pitcher who transferred to Baton Rouge from Alabama was listed as the No. 8 player in the top 10.

Holman served as the ace for the Alabama Crimson Tide last season and he was slated to start Game 1 against the Tigers at The Box, but then the gambling debacle happened and Holman was scratched from starting. That led to former Alabama head coach Brad Bohannon being fired and Holman entering the transfer portal.

Holman finished 2023 with a 7-4 record and a 3.67 ERA in 81 innings pitched. He struck out 87 hitters and opposing batters had a season batting average of .186 against him.

Holman will be a starter for the defending national champion LSU Tigers this spring. Where he is in the rotation remains to be seen as [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] returns after a stellar end to the 2023 season.

Six LSU players named to D1Baseball’s impact transfer list

D1 Baseball released a list of the top 130 impact transfers in college baseball. Six LSU newcomers made the list.

D1Baseball released a list of the top 130 impact transfers in college baseball. Six LSU newcomers made the list.

[autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] (No. 3), [autotag]Mac Bingham[/autotag] (No. 12), [autotag]Gage Jump[/autotag] (No. 21), [autotag]Justin Loer[/autotag] (No. 23), [autotag]Kade Woods[/autotag] (No. 37) and [autotag]Michael Braswell III[/autotag] (No. 119) all made the top 130.

Three out of those six are all in-conference transfers. Holman and Woods are both coming to LSU from Alabama, and Braswell spent his last two seasons playing for South Carolina.

The other three guys are from all across the map. Bingham is another recruit from the Arizona to LSU pipeline, Jump is coming to LSU from UCLA, and Loer is coming to LSU after pitching at Xavier for two seasons.

LSU baseball lands JUCO pitcher transfer

The defending national champions have landed another pitcher in the transfer portal.

The defending national champions have landed another pitcher in the transfer portal. [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] has secured a commitment from 6-foot-4, 185-pound left-handed pitcher [autotag]Conner Ware[/autotag] from Pearl River Community College in Poplarville, Mississippi.

Ware is a kid who has baseball in his blood. His brother, Bryson Ware, was a senior at Auburn last year. Conner made six appearances in the 2023 season for the Pearl River Wildcats, making six starts and finishing the year with a 1.59 ERA. He pitched 17 innings and struck out 28 hitters while only walking three. That’s a stat that you can live with.

LSU suffered from a lot of pitching injuries last season so it is nice to know there is another high-quality arm in the bullpen. For all I know, Johnson could turn this kid into a starter. He was 3-0 in games he started and the furthest he went was six innings. Ware will be a name to keep an eye on next spring.

5 things to know about newest LSU baseball transfer Luke Holman

Here are five things to know about former Alabama pitcher Luke Holman, LSU’s latest transfer portal addition.

[autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] has recruited the transfer portal better than anyone else since arriving at LSU.

Last year, LSU nabbed stars like [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] and [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag]. Two years ago, we saw slugger [autotag]Jacob Berry[/autotag] follow Johnson to LSU, too.

After winning the College World Series, LSU’s been busy again this year, especially on the pitching side.

LSU struck again this week with the commitment of former Alabama ace [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag]. Originally from Pennsylvania, Holman had a breakout year with the Crimson Tide last year and finished near the top of several SEC leaderboards.

Here are five things to new about LSU’s latest transfer portal addition.

Coveted Alabama pitcher transfer Luke Holman reportedly weighing options after busy visit week

The Tigers were one of three SEC schools to host Luke Holman this past week.

LSU has already landed a couple of potential impact players in the transfer portal since winning the national championship last month, but the Tigers also remain in the mix for one of the best portal options in the entire country.

Former Alabama right-handed pitcher [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] entered the transfer portal after serving as the Crimson Tide’s ace this spring, and he’s down to an All-SEC trio of finalists.

Holman spent this past week visiting all of them, starting with Tennessee on Monday and Mississippi State on Tuesday before closing things out with a tip to Baton Rouge, according to a report from LSU Country’s Zach Nagy.

He was also reportedly considering a fourth visit, potentially to Auburn, but he will stick to his top three.

Holman said all his finalists stand equally at the moment, according to Nagy, and that he’s trying to make the most of the one year he will spend at his next stop.

Holman made 16 appearances with 15 starts for the Crimson Tide in 2022. He finished with a 7-4 record along with an earned run average of 3.67. In 81 innings pitched, he struck out 87 batters while issuing 31 walks.

LSU lands an outfielder from the Pac-12 in the transfer portal

Jay Johnson has made another splash in the transfer portal. This time, he landed another player that he is very familiar with.

[autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] has made another splash in the transfer portal. This time, he landed another player that he is very familiar with.

[autotag]Mac Bingham[/autotag] was part of Johnson’s 2019 recruiting class when he was at Arizona. Bingham has started the past four years for the Wildcats and had his best seasons last year as he had a .360 batting average with 20 doubles, two triples, 10 homers and 51 RBI.

He was a run-scoring machine, and he had a 98% fielding percentage in the outfield.

With the loss of [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] and [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] to the MLB draft, there are a couple of open spots in the LSU outfield.

[autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] seems to be a lock for one of the outfield spots. I think Bingham is a shoo-in for one of the other spots.

If he can get close to the production he had last season at Arizona or his production as a freshman for Johnson, the Tigers will be in a great spot.

Alabama starting pitcher reportedly visiting LSU as a transfer

The Crimson Tide’s ace could be bound for Baton Rouge in the transfer portal.

LSU already has a couple of transfers on board this offseason after winning a national championship in 2023, and it’s in the mix for even more.

One of those players is former Alabama starting pitcher [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag], who will be making a visit to Baton Rouge early next week. That news was first reported by On3’s Matthew Brune.

Holman, who entered the transfer portal on June 22, was the Crimson Tide’s Friday night starter this year. He had an earned run average of 3.67 while striking out 87 batters compared to the 31 walks he issued.

For an LSU staff in need of starting pitching following the departures of [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag], [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] and [autotag]Grant Taylor[/autotag], Holman would be a huge addition.

He’s perhaps best known around the country for being the ace that former coach Brad Bohannon scratched for back tightness ahead of Game 1 against the Tigers earlier this season. Bohannon was later fired after it was determined that he was in communication with someone who placed a large bet on the game.

Holman is looking for a fresh start in the transfer portal, and that could come with the team he was ultimately scratched against.

Former LSU outfielder announces transfer to Big 10 school

After spending the last two years at LSU, Josh Stevenson is headed to Ohio State.

After spending the last two years at LSU, [autotag]Josh Stevenson[/autotag] is headed to Ohio State.

Stevenson played in 40 games as a freshman in 2022, finishing the season with a .200 batting average, four doubles, a homer and 9 RBI. Last season, Stevenson only appeared in 24 games and had 10 at-bats. He was mainly used as a late-inning defensive replacement.

The Buckeyes finished last season 31-25 and failed to make the Big Ten conference tournament. Hopefully, Stevenson will go to Columbus and be successful.

As for LSU, the Tigers are gearing up for Sunday’s MLB draft where they will see multiple names called in the first round. [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag], [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] and possibly [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] may all hear their names called early tomorrow night. The 2023 MLB draft starts at 6 p.m. CT.

After the draft, we should know more about who LSU is pursuing in the transfer portal as well.

LSU lands UCLA pitcher from the transfer portal

The Tigers are going back to the UCLA pitching well with Gage Jump.

Stop me if you have heard this before: LSU lands a pitcher from UCLA in the transfer portal. We have seen this story already, and it helped bring the Tigers a national championship.

Thanks, [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag].

[autotag]Gage Jump[/autotag] is a 6-foot, 200-pound left-handed pitcher from UCLA that missed the 2023 season due to having Tommy John surgery. In 2022, Jump was 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA. He had 22 strikeouts and 11 walks in 16.1 innings.

Coming out of high school in 2021, he was selected in the 18th round of the MLB draft but he opted to go to UCLA instead of signing with the San Diego Padres.

[autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] was masterful in the transfer portal last offseason as he brought in [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag], [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] and Hurd. Those three players made a huge difference in the Tigers’ season.

Johnson is already off to a hot start in the portal and he has more stars on the way.

Former Alabama RHP Kade Woods to transfer to LSU

Coach Jay Johnson’s recruiting pitch at the podium seems to have had some immediate effects.

It seems coach Jay Johnson’s recruiting pitch to transfer portal players at the College World Series may have worked.

On Friday night, LSU landed its second pitching transfer commitment of the cycle in former Alabama right-hander [autotag]Kade Woods[/autotag]. The redshirt freshman is a native of Monroe, Louisiana, and will be returning to his home state after two seasons with the Crimson Tide.

Woods appeared in 17 games this season with one start. He finished with a 4-1 record, a 5.52 earned run average in 29.1 innings pitched and 38 strikeouts, which led the bullpen.

His last outing came in the super regional against Wake Forest in which he struggled, allowing three runs in less than a full inning before he was yanked.

Still, this is a great pickup for LSU’s bullpen. Woods redshirted in 2022 while coming back from injury, so he’ll still have three remaining seasons of eligibility.

Woods becomes the second pitcher to commit to LSU as a transfer, joining Xavier’s [autotag]Justin Loer[/autotag].
