Ravens restructure Justin Tucker’s contract to create extra salary cap space

We previously wrote about Baltimore’s need to become salary cap compliant before Thursday’s season opener against the Chiefs. GM Eric DeCosta has several options at his disposal.

DeCosta used one on Monday, restructuring the contract of All-Pro linebacker Roquan Smith, freeing up $3.65 million in salary cap space.

He did it again on Tuesday, restructuring All-Pro defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike and Justin Tucker.

Tucker’s restructure saves the Ravens over $1.7 million.

Last season, Tucker (90.2%) connected on 31-of-36 field goal attempts and 50-of-51 points after tries, scoring a career-high team record and AFC-best 143 points in 2023. All but one of Tucker’s misses last season have been on tries of at least 53 yards, including a blocked 55-yarder. In 2023, Tucker posted his ninth-ever season, reaching at least 30 field goals made, with no other kicker in NFL history producing more than five such seasons. He also owns an NFL-record 12 straight seasons (each year of his career) with at least 25 field goals made.

Ravens restructure Nnamdi Madubuike’s contract to create extra salary cap space

He did it again on Tuesday, restructuring All-Pro defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike.

Madubuike improved greatly in his fourth season with the Ravens. He led the team with 13 sacks, 33 quarterback hits, and 12 tackles for loss, which earned him his first Pro Bowl honor.

Madubuike had a breakout season in a contract year, setting himself up for a four-year, $98 million extension.

DeCosta used one on Monday, restructuring the contract of All-Pro linebacker Roquan Smith, freeing up $3.65 million in salary cap space.

Roquan Smith approaches the game with an intense mindset, always playing with anger and never showing signs of weakness. The star linebacker was acquired by the Baltimore Ravens from the Bears in 2022, and since then, he has recorded over 245 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and two interceptions and earned a 75.0 grade from PFF in 25 games.

Smith had 84 solo tackles, 74 assists, 1.5 sacks, and one interception in 16 games in 2023, and he’s the best leader the Ravens have had since Ray Lewis retired.

Ravens roster cuts: Tracking the path to 53 players

With Tuesday’s deadline fast approaching, we’re tracking the roster cuts one player at a time.

The Ravens and 31 other teams have begun the painstaking process of trimming their training camp rosters from 90 players to the NFL’s required 53 ahead of Week 1.

Baltimore is a loaded team with Super Bowl aspirations, meaning there aren’t many available roster spots, and few of the players on the bubble will make the cut. The Ravens have decisions to make at the reserve running back and backup offensive line positions, among others.

Baltimore waived the undrafted rookie on Monday.

Washington was waived via an injury settlement.

Signed before the start of training, Gage has been released.

Sharp signed with Baltimore after the draft.

The former Oklahoma and Tulsa offensive tackle signed with Baltimore as an undrafted free agent.

The former Georgia defensive end signed with Baltimore after the NFL draft.

The Ravens returned to the field for live game action for the first time since their heartbreaking, 17-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC title game.

Baltimore hosted Philadelphia at M&T Bank Stadium, with both teams on similar arcs, and championship paths. Starting quarterback Lamar Jackson sat out along with key starters on both sides of the football.

Eagles kicker Jake Elliott made a 49-yard field goal with no time remaining to give the Philadelphia Eagles a 16-13 victory after Baltimore quarterback Emory Jones — who had just entered the game — was sacked and fumbled on the next play.

The recovery by Patrick Johnson gave Elliott his final opportunity of the night.

The Ravens practiced with heavy hearts on Saturday as former NFL wide receiver Jacoby Jones was laid to rest in his hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana.

Jones passed away on July 14, and the Baltimore Ravens honored the Super Bowl hero by having staff members wear bandanas with Jacoby Jones’ No. 12 and kids receive wristbands with his number.

Pro Bowl kicker Justin Tucker missed Saturday’s practice to attend the funeral services, while former Ravens quarterback and Super Bowl champion Joe Flacco missed Browns practice to attend as well.

Baltimore Ravens’ 90-man roster at the start of 2024 training camp

The Baltimore Ravens have officially reported to the Under Armour Performance Center for the start of training camp with the first practice scheduled for Sunday morning.

There will be starting jobs and roster spots up for grabs, which should make for some intriguing position battles throughout camp and the preseason.

Currently, the Ravens have 90 players on their roster, and that will be trimmed down to 53 ahead of the start of the regular season, and by August 27.
