Bruce Irvin’s bad take on Baker Mayfield’s reaction to Myles Garrett incident

Panthers linebacker Bruce Irvin took to Twitter and said Mayfield was dry snitching by calling out his teammate.

At the end of Thursday night’s game between the Browns and Steelers, Myles Garrett made a shocking attack on Mason Rudolph. After a late hit, he stripped Rudolph’s helmet and then clubbed him over the head with it. A substantial fine and a lengthy suspension are certainly coming down the pipe for Garrett.

After the game, Baker Mayfield didn’t mince words. He knew what Garrett did was inexcusable and said as much.

Seems sensible enough, right?

Apparently not everyone agrees. Panthers linebacker Bruce Irvin took to Twitter and said Mayfield was dry snitching by calling out his teammate.

Irvin elaborated with another tweet, saying he’s all for being a leader but he says he’d never out his teammates on national TV ever.

Bad take.

Garrett outed himself on TV, so Mayfield couldn’t dry snitch even if he tried. Stating the obvious doesn’t mean Mayfield betrayed Garrett (who admitted he was wrong) in any way.

Having your teammate’s back does not require you to take their side when they have done something wrong. Period.

Baker Mayfield calls Myles Garrett’s helmet attack ‘inexcusable’ in somber interview

“He’s going to going get suspended. We don’t know how long and that hurts our team.”

Baker Mayfield was blunt and somber as he addressed Myles Garrett’s mindless violence in the final moments of the Cleveland Browns’ win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday Night Football.

Garrett ripped the helmet off quarterback Mason Rudolph’s head, and began hitting him with it. Rudolph said he was fine after the game. But Garrett’s actions immediately spurred violence all over the field. Steelers offensive linemen David DeCastro and Maurice Pouncey responded by punching and kicking Garrett in the head. It was the most violent and disgusting display in recent memory in the NFL.

“That’s inexcusable,” Mayfield said in an interview on the field on the FOX Sports broadcast immediately after the game. “I don’t care — rivalry or not — you can’t do that. That’s kind of our history here: hurting yourself. That’s just endangering the other team. That’s inexcusable. He knows that — I hope he does now. It’s just tough.”

Mayfield added: “I don’t think there’s anything in that moment that I can say to calm him down. The reality is, he’s going to going get suspended. We don’t know how long, and that hurts our team. We can’t do that. We can’t continue to hurt our team.”

Here’s a look at the full incident, including what seems to be the interaction that started it. It looks like Garrett’s hit on Rudolph lead to some wrestling on the ground, during which Rudolph attempted to take off Garrett’s helmet. That’s when Garrett borough their fight to a totally different scale.

Rudolph spoke out against Garrett after the game and said it was “pretty cowardly” and “pretty bush league.”

No doubt, Garrett will face a suspension. His actions are likely to bring a severe response from the NFL, which is trying and apparently failing to fix their image issues.

Baker Mayfield speaks out against Myles Garrett’s violence after crazy TNF ending

What Myles Garrett did to Mason Rudolph was completely unacceptable, and it was right for Baker Mayfield to speak out against it.

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett is one of the NFL’s best at his position. He came into Thursday night’s game against the Steeelers with 10 sacks and 15 quarterback hits. And while Garrett’s Browns won this game, they won’t have Garrett on the active roster for a while — Garrett was ejected from the game late in the fourth quarter following a set-to with Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph.

Garrett took some extra time to take Rudolph down on the play in question with 14 seconds left in the game after Rudolph released the ball. This frustrated Rudolph, who pulled at Garrett’s helmet. This frustrated Garrett, who pulled Rudolph’s helmet off… and then hit Rudolph with his own helmet.

Garrett, Browns defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi, and Steelers center Mike Pouncey were all ejected from the game, with offsetting penalties. The game was over two plays later, with the Browns winning, 21-7.

That’s the end of the good news for the Browns, who will absolutely face serious disciplinary action from the league sooner than later. Garrett, who engaged in a tactic as brutal as anything you’ll see on a football field, will undoubtedly be suspended multiple games, if not for the entire season.

Throughout the 2019 campaign, the Browns have struggled with issues of consistency and self-control. But this brought things to an entirely new level, and there’s absolutely no excuse for any of it. What Garrett did crosses the lines of football and veers into assault territory.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin refused to comment on the incident. During a post-game interview with the NFL Network, Browns receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. saw what Garrett did for the first time, and was visibly shaken.

“It’s inexcusable,” Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield said of Garrett’s actions when asked by FOX Sports’ Erin Andrews. “Rivalry or not, we can’t do that. That’s endangering the other team. That’s inexcusable. The reality is, he’s going to get suspended. It’s inexcusable.”

Yes he will, and yes it is.

Baker Mayfield on Myles Garrett: ‘That’s inexcusable’

Mayfield did not defend the Browns standout defensive end after the game

What should have been a joyous postgame for the Cleveland Browns instead resembled a crime scene aftermath. A brawl in the final seconds involving Myles Garrett, Mason Rudolph, a swinging helmet and Steelers offensive linemen completely overshadowed the Browns’ 21-7 win.

Baker Mayfield got the first shot at Browns damage control in a postgame interview on the field.

Mayfield spoke with Fox Sports’ Erin Andrews right after the game. Andrews asked the Browns QB about his reaction to Garrett’s violent attack on Rudolph.

“Inexcusable,” Mayfield said. “I don’t care, rivalry or not, we can’t do that. … That’s endangering the other team.”

Mayfield continued somberly:

“That’s inexcusable, and (Garrett) knows that.”

Andrews pressed Mayfield, knowing that he and Rudolph are friends, draft classmates and former college rivals.

“The reality is, (Garrett is) going to get suspended. We don’t know how long, and that hurts our team. We can’t do that. We can’t continue to hurt this team. It’s inexcusable.”

Watch: Baker fakes a Steeler out of his shoes, drills a strike to KhaDarel Hodge

The great pump fake and 41-yard pass set up the Browns second TD

Baker Mayfield sure looks like he’s feeling dangerous in the first half of the Thursday Night Football game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Browns QB was definitely dangerous for a Pittsburgh pass rusher in the second quarter.

Mayfield gave a pump fake that juked Steelers OLB Jayrone Elliott out of his shoes. Watch Elliott leap and fly past the play, allowing Mayfield to set up and unleash a strike down the field to KhaDarel Hodge.

The play went for 41 yards and helped set up the Browns’ second TD of the night, with Mayfield finding a wide open Jarvis Landry in the left side of the striped end zone to push the Browns up 14-0.

Week 11 Fantasy Preview: Browns vs Steelers

Week 11 Fantasy Preview: Browns vs Steelers

How should fantasy football players handle the Thursday Night Football matchup between the Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers? Is Kareem Hunt worth starting? What about Baker Mayfield or Mason Rudolph?

The Matchup

Since the acquisition of Minkah Fitzpatrick, safety, the Steelers defense has been why the Steelers have won games. The defensive unit been opportunistic and applies pressure on opposing defenses from all levels of the field. Additionally, the defense has not allowed the sins of their offense to penalize the team on their four-game winning streak. Especially when the offense has gone three consecutive weeks turning the ball over on their opening drive.

While the defense has been great, I will ask this question of everyone reading this: “who have the Steelers played!?”

In Week 10 the Steelers played the broken down L.A. Rams coming to the east coach. Week 9 saw the Steelers knock Jacoby Brissett out early and go against Brian Hoyer for the majority of the game. The Week 8 Miami Dolphins put up a fight for the first half and then completely lost offensive momentum to sustain a lead. Finally, the Week 6 Chargers were led by Phillip Rivers’ strong two-interception game and Melvin Gordon trying to knock off the rust from a lengthy holdout.

What about the opposing weapons? They have to be better against this new age “Steel Curtain”, right? The media is clamoring about how great the Steelers defense is. They must have shut down amazing levels of talent on the opposing side of the field. In Week 10 the Steelers did a great job shutting down Cooper Kupp for the first time all season. The Rams also didn’t have Brandin Cooks and have dealt with significant injuries to their offensive line recently.

The Colts have been putting a band-aid on their pass-catchers with TY Hilton out. Their keynote wide receiver has been Zach Pascal. The Miami Dolphins were running out the dynamic combination of Preston Williams and DeVante Parker. I bet this defensive secondary would do great against the wide receivers in the Washington Redskins or the Jacksonville Jaguars.

This should not be a shock to anyone after reading the above information. The Browns may be the best offense the Steelers have faced since their Week 5 opponent, the Baltimore Ravens.

Baker Mayfield

The Steelers have on average allowed 216 passing yards and 1.7 passing touchdowns over their last three games, which includes a zero touchdown game from Jared Goff. While this is a small sample size, I think Jared Goff’s meltdown can really make their defense look better than it really is. Baker Mayfield should be considered a top-15 quarterback in a decent matchup at home.

Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt

I am lumping these two together because there are still a lot of questions about total opportunity splits between these two. Week 10 saw Kareem Hunt earn 13 opportunities to touch the ball (9 targets and 4 rushes) and Nick Chubb saw 24 opportunities (20 rushes and 4 targets). It is still too early to say if those numbers will shift dependent on game script or hot hand. I would be willing to consider both FIRMLY in the top-24 conversation and Hunt would also be a great FLEX play.

Odell Beckham Jr.

In Week 10 Beckham earned his highest number of targets of the season and his first double-digit target game since Week 6 against the Seahawks. Additionally, the voluminous target share came in a negative matchup against one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. In Week 11, OBJ draws former Browns cornerback Joe Hayden. This may be the softest cornerback matchup OBJ has seen since Week 6 against the Seahawks when he erupted for his first 100-yard game of the season. This Week 11 matchup has the makings of a breakout game for Odell Beckham Jr. He should be considered a top-5 option on the week.

Jarvis Landry

There is no doubt Jarvis Landry is the best wide receiver on the Cleveland Browns right now. He is a leader with his game play and how he works on the sideline. For fantasy teams, Jarvis Landry is a steady WR2. He will get you exactly what you were hoping for from the position and show up every week. I would have no worries about getting him into your lineup.

Biggest question

I don’t know if Antonio Callaway is out of the doghouse or if Rashard Higgins will be given his opportunity to play more. I would love to see Higgins on the field because of his undeniable connection with Baker Mayfield and his route running ability. I would not trust either one in my lineup.

Update: Callaway has been cut.

Did Baker Mayfield inadvertently compliment Bills Mafia?

The Bills fell 19-16 to the Browns in Week 10. It was a tough loss in the playoff picture, but also because plenty of fans from western New York made the trek to the game.

The Bills fell 19-16 to the Browns in Week 10. It was a tough loss in the playoff picture, but also because plenty of fans from western New York made the trek to the game.

Not meaning to, Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield might have given a little tip of the cap to Bills Mafia earlier this week.

According to Browns Wire, Mayfield made a comment in his his postgame press conference that he believed right tackle Chris Hubbard couldn’t hear his snap count and that’s why he jumped early for a false start just before halftime.

Strange, considering the Browns were the home team.

Earlier this week, Mayfield once again made a comment about that same thing. Inadvertently not seemingly realizing Bills fans travel well.

“When we’re on offense on a critical down, we need to be able to have silence in our home stadium,” Mayfield explained. “It has to be an advantage for us, and then when they get the ball, it has to be really loud. It’s just football.”

Left guard Joel Bitonio seconded Mayfield’s sentiment. Bitonio as Browns Wire notes, “It was a little bit loud a couple times in the red zone there going into the far tunnel.”

Makes you wonder if these fellas didn’t look into the crowd to notice all the red, white and blue in the stands last week.

The Browns might be in trouble again this week, too. They play the Steelers at home, another short road trip for visiting fans, on Thursday Night Football.

Baker Mayfield asks fans for silence when Browns have the ball on offense

It’s a generally given principle of fandom that you only get loud when your team is on defense.

Make no mistake, Baker Mayfield loves to hear the roar of the FirstEnergy Stadium crowd. He’d just like to hear a little less of it when the Browns have the ball near the end zone.

Mayfield noted in his postgame press conference that he believed right tackle Chris Hubbard couldn’t hear his snap count and that’s why he jumped early for a false start just before halftime. The 4th down penalty forced the team to kick a field goal instead of going for it and possibly extending the drive for a touchdown.

Some fans took umbrage, so Mayfield addressed the situation after Tuesday’s session in Berea.

Bitonio noted, “It was a little bit loud a couple times in the red zone there going into the far tunnel.”

It’s a generally given principle of fandom that you only get loud when your team is on defense. It can be hard to resist the excitement, though.

WATCH: Baker Mayfield’s wife defends comments about ‘fair weather fans’

The 2019 season has not been kind to the Browns or quarterback Baker Mayfield.

The 2019 season has not been kind to the Browns or quarterback Baker Mayfield.

This week, Mayfield’s wife Emily took to Instagram to defend her husband and his team … then had to defend herself.

Late Monday, Mrs. Mayfield posted a black screen to her IG story with a short note reading, “Fairweather fans are HILARIOUS TO ME. Get out of here.”

Browns’ fans did not take kindly to the message. Tuesday, Emily clarified that she noted talking about legitimate Cleveland fans (which, to be fair, would not have had a real opportunity to be “fair weather,” during the actual season). The former first overall draft pick’s with explained she, “didn’t expect to ruffle so many feathers,” adding “No, I was not directing that at the die-hard, loyal fans who have stuck around for years. I’m talking about the idiots who say horrible things about my husband and the team when we lose and are obsessing when we win. That is laughable to me.”

Emily added one final note, “…loyal fans, I see you!”

The Browns are 3-6, better than only the winless Bengals in the division, and host the Steelers (5-4) Thursday.
