There’s something about jersey numbers that add to the mystique in sports. Whenever great players are talked about, the numbers they wear take on extra meaning. As time goes on, debates rage about who the best was to wear that particular number. Often times, the sports even intersect in those debates.

In 2014, Sports Illustrated (remember it?) published a book called Any Given Number: Who Wore It Best, from 00 to 99 about this very subject. On the way to running down each number, the book dedicates a couple pages to college football programs who have had consistent success with one number at one position. Among them are No. 55 for USC linebackers, No. 1 for Michigan receivers, No. 12 for Alabama quarterbacks and No. 44 for Syracuse.

Also included on these pages are quarterbacks who wore No. 3 for Notre Dame. The Irish haven’t had a quarterback wear that number since [autotag]Avery Davis[/autotag] played under center in 2018, his first season with the program. So naturally, it’s been a long time since the number meant anything for Irish quarterbacks. Still, it’s fun to look at history.

Here the are five Irish quarterbacks the book mentions made No. 3 a special number at that position:

Lions latest wave of roster cuts includes several offensive linemen

Lions latest wave of roster cuts includes several offensive linemen and some expected moves

The quest to get from 90 to just 53 players is progressing quickly for GM Brad Holmes and the Detroit Lions. On Sunday, the Lions announced several cuts.

Some of them were already known, like C Alex Mollette and DL Christian Covington. Mollette was joined on the roster cutdown line by a few fellow offensive linemen.

The Lions released vets Bobby Hart and Germain Ifedi, and also waived tackle Obinna Eze and guard Darrin Paulo, as well as confirming the Mollette move. Ifedi’s release is something of a surprise, as the experienced journeyman had looked better than Matt Nelson during the preseason. These moves appear to ensure that Nelson makes the 53-man roster as the top reserve tackle.

The Lions also released RB Devine Ozigbo and WR Jason Moore. Players who are vested veterans are released and not subject to waivers.

Other players waived, and thus subject to waiver claims on Wednesday:

WR Trinity Benson

WR Avery Davis

TE Daniel Helm

S Scott Nelson

CB Colby Richardson

None of those waivers are unexpected. Benson was the best-known of the group, but he was outplayed by undrafted rookies Chase Cota and Dylan Drummond in the battle for the final roster spot(s).

Lions add 2 players, waive injured WR Trey Quinn

The Detroit Lions signed two players and waived injured WR Trey Quinn

The Detroit Lions only held a walkthrough practice session on Tuesday, one that was closed to the media. They did complete a couple of transactions, however.

The Lions officially signed center Alex Mollette a day after reports indicated the deal was imminent. Detroit also re-signed wide receiver Avery Davis.

Davis is back with the Lions after a very short stint on the unemployment line. Signed initially on August 5th, the wideout was then waived on August 9th, before the preseason opener.

Davis replaces injured wideout Trey Quinn, who was waived with injury status on Tuesday. Quinn caught one pass for eight yards in the exhibition win over the Giants.

Lions sign RB Devine Ozigbo, waive WR Avery Davis

The Detroit Lions signed free agent RB Devine Ozigbo and waived WR Avery Davis

The constant shuffling at the bottom of the Detroit Lions roster continues. On Wednesday morning, the Lions signed free agent RB Devine Ozigbo.

Ozigbo, 26, is entering his fifth NFL season. His first three seasons were in Jacksonville after the Jaguars signed him as an undrafted free agent from Nebraska. Ozigbo played four games for the Denver Broncos in 2022 and has been a fixture on the NFL’s transaction sheet recently with workouts or tryouts for several teams.

He joins a running back room that includes David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs, Justin Jackson, Craig Reynolds, Jermar Jefferson and Mohamed Ibrahim. In college and during the pre-draft process, the 225-pound Ozigbo was notable for his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. He has the same number of receptions as carries in his NFL career (14).

To make room for Ozigbo, the Lions waived WR Avery Davis, who was with the team for exactly one practice.

Detroit Lions sign former Notre Dame receiver Avery Davis

Good luck, Avery.

[autotag]Avery Davis[/autotag] hasn’t played a competitive football game since before the 2021 season ended. Two ACL tears over the past two seasons have kept him on the sidelines, including for all of the 2022 season. Now, he’s going to get a chance the NFL. The Detroit Lions announced that they had signed Davis before Saturday’s practice, and he’ll have a chance to grab one of the final two receiver spots on their depth chart.

From 2018 to 2021, Davis had 66 receptions for 862 yards and eight touchdowns. He began his collegiate career as a running back before moving to receiver after his first season on the field. If for some crazy reason the Lions decide to try him in the backfield, he had 34 carries for 156 yard but did not score from there.

It will be worth seeing if Davis can survive the preseason, especially without having seen game action for so long. One could say it’s an unforgiving way to find out. Then again, he’ll never know unless he tries.

Lions officially sign CB Tae Hayes and WR Avery Davis

Lions officially sign CB Tae Hayes and WR Avery Davis and waive LB Zach Morton

There are two new players at Saturday’s Detroit Lions training camp practice. The Lions officially announced they have signed CB Tae Hayes and WR Avery Davis to the 90-man roster.

Hayes is a direct replacement for injured CB Jarren Williams, who was waived with injury designation after being carted off from Thursday’s practice. The 25-year-old Hayes has bounced around several NFL teams as well as in the USFL.

Davis is an undrafted rookie from Notre Dame. He played in both the slot and outside for the Fighting Irish after transitioning from quarterback.

To make room for Davis on the roster, the Lions waived undrafted rookie LB Zach Morton, who had missed time in cam with an injury.

Avery Davis writes message to Notre Dame fans

The injured Irish receiver feels your love.

No one wants to see something they love end abruptly for them. Unfortunately for Notre Dame receiver [autotag]Avery Davis[/autotag], that turned out to be the case when he tore his ACL in practice. With this being his final season of eligibility, Davis has played his final game for the Irish. What a cruel finish to his career.

A lot of people apparently have reached out to Davis to offer sympathy and support. With so many people in his corner, Davis wrote a message to offer his appreciation:

It’s nice to know Davis still will be around the team, but it absolutely has to be eating at him inside knowing he can’t be on the field with his teammates. At least he’s making the best of a bad situation. You always want to take a negative and turn it into a positive, and this probably is the best way he can do that as it pertains to football.

Notre Dame veteran receiver out for 2022

Brutal news for Davis and tough for Notre Dame at a position they simply can’t afford to have it happen at…

Brutal news was announced Saturday morning as Notre Dame graduate student and veteran wide receiver Avery Davis will miss the entire 2022 season after tearing the ACL in his right knee on Friday.  Avery previously injured the ACL in his left knee late in the 2021 regular season.

Davis has been a captain and was projected to start in the slot this coming fall.  He had the third most receiving yards on Notre Dame last year as he went for 386 yards on 27 receptions.

The news is especially brutal when you look at how thin Notre Dame’s depth already is at wide receiver as his injury now means the Irish can’t even fill out a two-deep at the three wide receiver positions.

Davis was to be participating in his sixth season at Notre Dame after being a traditional redshirt his freshman year and taking advantage of the universal free year that everyone was given during the 2020 pandemic season.

More to come on what it means for Notre Dame’s offense in 2022 but for now this is just brutal news for a young man that has already been through so much during his time in South Bend.

Report: Notre Dame in mix for Pac 12 wide receiver

Is he a fit and does Notre Dame have a chance?

One scan of Notre Dame’s depth chart at wide receiver tells the story of a position group in need of bodies.  Veterans [autotag]Avery Davis[/autotag] and [autotag]Joe Wilkins, Jr.[/autotag] both continue to recover from injuries while only one freshman, [autotag]Tobias Merriweather[/autotag] signed with the 2022 recruiting class.

The transfer portal is clearly a place most expect [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and Notre Dame to dip their toes into as they try and fix that issue.  It is there that they’re at least of some interest to a Pac 12 receiver who led his team in receiving yards a season ago.

According to Mike Farrell, Notre Dame could be in the mix for Arizona State receiver Ricky Pearsall.  Pearsall is expected to make visits to both Florida and Auburn the next two weekends and if he doesn’t make a decision after that, Notre Dame and Oregon “could be in the mix”.

Translation: it would appear to be Florida or Auburn‘s game to lose with Pearsall.

However, if he doesn’t love his trip to either of those its worth knowing for Notre Dame fans that Pearsall hauled in a team leading 48 receptions for 540 yards and four touchdowns last season.  Due to the COVID exemption in 2020, Pearsall will have two years of eligibility remaining at whatever program he chooses to attend next.

The culmination of the spring football season is upon us, the Blue and Gold game is set to be on our screens and for some of us, in the stands of Notre Dame Stadium. For the most part all the work these players have put in has been behind the scenes, but now, they emerge from the shadows of Irish Athletic Complex and give us a sneak peak of what’s to come this fall. Here are five outcomes we’d love to see come out of the spring.
