Raiders add free-agent RB Austin Walter

With RB Zamir White not practicing, Raiders have added RB Austin Walter

Following the move to send LB Kyler Fackrell to injured reserve, the team went about filling the open roster spot by signing free agent RB Austin Walter.

Walter enters his fourth NFL season. Most recently he was a member of the Jets, where he spent the entirety of the 2021 season, rushing for 101 yards and one touchdown on 26 carries and adding two catches for nine yards.

Walter entered the league in 2019 as an undrafted free agent out of Rice University. He signed on with the Giants, appearing in one game that season.

In 2020, he joined the 49ers practice squad, where he was elevated three times to the game day roster.

He spent last season on the practice squad for the Jets and was called up four times and averaged nearly four yards per carry.

Walter adds camp depth with rookie Zamir White currently out with injury. White’s injury isn’t considered serious and he isn’t expected to miss much time.

Texans work out 4 running backs ahead of training camp

The Houston Texans worked out four running backs as training camp is less than a week away.

The Houston Texans worked out four running backs according to a league source.

The first running back Houston worked out was undrafted free agent running back Max Borghi from Washington State. Borghi had signed with the Indianapolis Colts during rookie minicamp but was released less than a week later.

Houston also worked out Cyrus Habibi-Likio, another undrafted free agent. Habibi-Likio generated 107 carries for 374 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns last year with Boise State.

Artavis Pierce also worked out for Houston. The former Chicago Bears running back tallied six carries for 34 yards and a touchdown in his six career games with the NFC North club from 2020-21.

Former Rice Owl and Crosby High School product Austin Walter also worked out for the Texans. Walter was an undrafted free agent with the San Francisco 49ers in 2019, but didn’t make their 53-man roster. Austin spent the 2019 regular season with the New York Giants. In 2020, Walter played for the XFL’s Dallas Renegades and then with the 49ers. In 2021, Walter played for the New York Jets.

Jets waive 3 upon announcement of undrafted free agent signings

The Jets waived RB Austin Walter, OL Isaiah Williams and DB Zane Lewis upon announcing five undrafted free agent signings.

The Jets waived running back Austin Walter, offensive lineman Isaiah Williams and safety Zane Lewis after announcing five undrafted free agent signings.

New York officially announced NC State running back Zonovan Knight, Kent State wide receiver Keshunn Abram, IUP and former Penn State wide receiver Irvin Charles, Middle Tennessee linebacker DQ Thomas and safety Tony Adams as undrafted free agent additions.

Walter appeared in four games for the Jets in 2021, rushing 26 times for 101 yards and a touchdown. He scored his lone touchdown of the season in a win over the Texans and rushed nine times for 38 yards against Houston. Walter also took 14 carries and rushed for 49 yards in a Week 16 loss to the Buccaneers.

Williams was signed by the Jets just before the beginning of last season and spent 2021 bouncing back and forth between the practice squad and the active roster. The 6-foot-3, 296-pound tackle signed a reserve/futures contract with New York in January.

Lewis missed all of 2021 with a torn patellar tendon and sprained ACL suffered in August during joint practices with the Packers. Lewis caught on with the Jets as an undrafted free agent out of Air Force in 2020, but never appeared in a regular season game with the team.

Forgotten Jets running back will get a chance vs. Saints

La’Mical Perine, a 2020 4th-round pick, has hardly played this year. He’ll get a chance vs. the Saints with the Jets’ backfield banged up.

The Jets had high hopes for La’Mical Perine when they used a fourth-round pick on the running back in 2020, but the Florida product has spent most of his sophomore season riding the bench.

Drafted with Adam Gase’s offense still in place, Perine never caught on with New York’s new coaching staff. Michael Carter, a 2021 fourth-rounder, quickly usurped Perine as Gang Green’s up-and-coming rusher, while more experienced players like Tevin Coleman and Ty Johnson have been tasked with handling the rest of the carries. Even Austin Walter, a player with one rush before this season, has seen action over Perine when the Jets were in need of depth.

Perine has only seen seven offensive snaps and 19 special teams snaps over three games in his second NFL season. The 23-year-old has mostly been inactive, but that will change Sunday against the Saints. With Carter still recovering from an ankle injury and Coleman out with a concussion, Perine will be New York’s third back behind Johnson and Walter.

“Anytime one person’s down, it gives an opportunity for another one,” Saleh said Friday of his Week 14 backfield trio. “So it gives them all an opp.”

Perine, who ran for 232 yards and two touchdowns on 64 carries as a rookie, needs to seize whatever chance he gets in Week 14. That’s easier said than done considering he’s third in New York’s pecking order and facing a top-five run defense. The Saints allow just 96.4 rushing yards per game; every member of the Jets’ backfield will have trouble on Sunday.

Perine won’t be the Jets’ only 2020 draft pick looking to impress this weekend after a sophomore season of minimal usage. With New York thin at wide receiver, second-rounder Denzel Mims will also try to seize his latest opportunity.

Austin Walter takes advantage of opportunity in emotional return home

Jets RB Austin Walter surprisingly put on a show in his emotional return to Houston, helping New York beat the Texans.

https://embed.sendtonews.com/oembed/?SC=TJbJs1zcRr-1644788-7498&format=json&offsetx=0&offsety=0&floatwidth=400&floatposition=bottom-right&float=on

When Michael Carter was placed on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain on Saturday, it was assumed that Tevin Coleman and Ty Johnson would take on increased roles in the Jets’ backfield.

Nobody gave Austin Walter — the No. 3 running back on New York’s depth chart after a practice squad elevation — much thought.

Walter, a former undrafted free agent who spent last season playing under Mike LaFleur in San Francisco, used Carter’s absence to make his presence felt in his return to his native Houston on Sunday. The 5-foot-8 tailback found the end zone from two yards out for the Jets’ first touchdown of the game and went on to rush nine times for 38 yards in a 21-14 victory over the Texans.

Most importantly, Walter provided the boost New York’s offense was searching for.

“He’s a fireplug or a spark plug or whatever you want to call it,” Robert Saleh said postgame.

Walter has been searching for an opportunity since he entered the NFL out of Rice University in 2019. Two stints with the 49ers, a brief stop across town with the Giants, and a year in the XFL preceded his chance with the Jets. He entered Sunday’s game with one career carry for three yards. By the time Walter’s day was over, friends and family had witnessed his first career touchdown.

Walter said that his mother predicted Saturday that he would score his first touchdown against the Texans. He chalked the prediction up to “mother’s intuition.” Walter was also confident that his father, Tony, who died four years ago, watched him find his way into the end zone from above.

“I know he had the best seat in the house,” Walter said. “He’d be bragging to all his friends.”

Walter may have some staying power in New York’s backfield after his surprise performance. La’Mical Perine, a 2020 fourth-round pick, was a healthy scratch in favor of Walter, which means the Jets already liked the latter. Walter will likely have a role until Carter returns, at the very least.

Either way, he will be able to remember his Week 12 performance as a special moment in his football journey.

Zach Wilson, John Franklin-Myers among Jets’ Studs & Duds in win over Texans

Jets QB Zach Wilson and DE John Franklin-Myers headline our studs and duds from New York’s 21-14 win over the Texans.

The Jets’ three-game losing streak is over.

Zach Wilson’s third-quarter rushing touchdown and strong defense throughout the fourth sealed New York’s third win of the season, as it held on for a 21-14 victory over the Texans in Week 12. The Jets fell behind early to Houston, but fought back and did just enough to claim a win for the first time in November.

Who starred in Houston? Who disappointed? Here are the studs and duds from Gang Green’s first win since Halloween.

6 takeaways from the Jets’ Week 12 win over the Texans

Zach Wilson was his usual self while the Jets’ defensive line dominated in a win over the Texans. Takeaways from New York’s triumph:

The Jets are back in the win column.

New York fell behind by 11 points early in its trip to Houston, but responded and held on at the end for a 21-14 win over the Texans. Zach Wilson didn’t light Houston’s vulnerable secondary on fire in his return from a sprained PCL, making some familiar mistakes. However, he found paydirt on a rushing touchdown in the third quarter for the eventual game-winning score.

Here are six takeaways from New York’s third win of the season.

Jets cut roster to 85 after waiving 3, placing Cameron Clark on IR

Bennett Jackson, Michael Dwumfour and Austin Walter are all headed to waivers after the Jets’ first round of roster cuts.

The Jets trimmed their roster to 85 Tuesday by waiving three players and placing offensive lineman Cameron Clark on injured reserve.

New York cut safety Bennett Jackson, defensive lineman Michael Dwumfour and running back Austin Walter, the team announced. Clark is heading to injured reserve after recently suffering a spinal cord contusion in practice. That puts the Jets at the required 85-man roster after the team previously waived kicker Chris Naggar.

Clark is out indefinitely but is expected to make a full recovery and remains in the team’s future. The other three were reserve players who had a tough hill to climb up the depth chart. Jackson is a backup safety whose role was likely on special teams, Dwumfour – who tallied a half-sack and recovered a fumble in the Jets’ preseason win over the Giants – was one of 13 defensive linemen, and Walter was the sixth running back.

The Jets will have to cut five more players to get the roster down to 80 by next Tuesday, August 24. Final cuts to get to the 53-man roster come on August 31.

49ers officially sign 10 rookies, Trey Lance not among them

The San Francisco 49ers signed 10 rookies, including five draft picks to contracts. Trey Lance was not among them.

The San Francisco 49ers on Thursday made 10 rookie signings official, including five of their eight draft picks and five undrafted free agents.

No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance was not among the players to sign one day before the start of rookie minicamp. Third-round picks RB Trey Sermon and CB Ambry Thomas have also yet to ink their rookie deals.

Given the standardized nature of the NFL’s four-year rookie contracts for draft picks there’s not a ton to iron out and the signings are more of a formality than anything. Players just have to sign before training camp starts or they’ll have to hold out.

There weren’t any surprises among the undrafted players either. San Francisco’s UDFA class is relatively small with four plus their signee via the NFL international pathway program.

Here are the 10 rookies who inked their deals Thursday:

49ers officially re-sign QB Josh Rosen, RB Austin Walter

The San Francisco 49ers re-added QB Josh Rosen and RB Austin Walter to their offseason roster.

The San Francisco 49ers on Monday made a couple of expected signings official. Quarterback Josh Rosen and running back Austin Walter will return to the club as part of the 90-man roster after inking their offseason deals.

Rosen was set to be a restricted free agent and was expected to re-sign according to a report from NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo. The 49ers signed the former No. 10 overall pick off the Buccaneers practice squad late last season. In a quarterback room that’s likely to be overhauled, Rosen will have a chance to compete for a roster spot as he tries to get his NFL career back on track. He’s 3-13 as a starter in 16 games since getting selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2018 NFL draft. Rosen has a 54.8 percent completion rate with 12 touchdowns and 19 interceptions in 20 games.

Walter was an undrafted free agent signing out of Rice by the 49ers after the 2019 draft. He was cut that offseason and caught on briefly with the New York Giants. Injuries in the backfield caused the 49ers to call Walter again last season. They added him to the practice squad, but he saw action in four games as a kick returner and on offense before going on season-ending Injured Reserve in mid-December. He’ll get a chance to compete for a spot in a backfield that has some question marks outside of Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr.
