LOOK. Ohio State football finally makes move in AP Top 25 poll.

The AP Poll voters finally penalize Alabama and elevate Ohio State. Do you agree? #GoBucks

It might not be to where many believe Ohio State should be, but the stubbornness of the Associated Press poll voters finally relented and did what everyone else’s eyes showed them over the last few weeks. They moved the Buckeyes up a spot to No. 2, just behind Georgia, which reclaimed the No. 1 spot after Alabama struggled on the road against unranked Texas A&M. The Crimson Tide fell to No. 3.

While there was a little bit of reshuffling, there weren’t too many changes in the top 10 due to a lack of a big upset near the top of the poll in Week 6. Behind the top three are Clemson (4), Michigan (5), Tennessee (6), USC (7), Oklahoma State (8), Ole Miss (9) and Penn State (10).

Ohio State will rest on a bye week and look to get healthy before hosting Iowa in a couple of weeks. You can visit the AP Poll to get a look at the rest of the rankings.

Ohio State basketball experiences modest fall in latest AP basketball poll

A modest drop despite beating Michigan over the weekend on the road. #GoBucks

It seems there was more stock taken in Ohio State’s loss on the road to Rutgers than the win over Michigan in Ann Arbor by the major basketball polls. Not only did the Buckeyes drop in the latest Ferris Mowers Coaches poll powered by USA TODAY Sports, but they experienced the same result in the latest Associated Press college basketball poll as well, dropping two spots to No. 18 this week.

But no matter. OSU will get a shot to impress voters this week during home games against Minnesota and Iowa. Win both in the Schottenstein Center where Ohio State has yet to lose this season, and things will get interesting with the polls and the Buckeyes’ chances of staying in the hunt for a Big Ten regular-season title.

The top ten in the AP poll this week includes Gonzaga, Auburn, Arizona, Kentucky, Purdue, Kansas, Baylor, Providence, Duke, and Villanova.

Levon Kirkland and myself breakdown the Associated Press’ Preseason Top 25 Poll and give out our own top 25 as well.

We also tell you what team we think will not be in the top 5 when the season is done and what teams may be ranked too high in the preseason poll.

We have an interview with Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney and give our thoughts as the Tigers close down preseason camp and start turning their attention to No. 5 Georgia.

On Monday, the Associated Press released its preseason Top 25 for the 2021 College Football Season.

Clemson rolled in at No. 3 in the preseason poll, marking a sixth straight year the Tigers will start a season ranked inside the top 5. It also marked the 57th straight week they have been ranked in the top 5, a remarkable streak.

In fact, here is something you probably have not seen mentioned on ESPN, or at least I have not seen it. Clemson’s streak of 57 consecutive weeks in the top 5 of the AP Poll is 39 weeks ahead of No. 2 Alabama, who has an active streak of 18 straight weeks.

And in case you are wondering, the Tigers’ streak in second all-time in the history of the AP Poll, which began in 1936. It is only bested by Alabama’s streak of 68 consecutive weeks from 2015-’19. In other words, Clemson has an opportunity this year to set an all-time record, something it could possibly do prior to its Week 13 showdown with archrival South Carolina on Nov. 27.

The Tigers’ current streak began on November 5, 2017, and to take it a step further, they have been ranked inside the Coaches Poll top five for 58 straight weeks, starting on October 29, 2017.

But the accolades do not stop in the top 5.

Clemson enters 2021 with a school-record streak of 103 consecutive AP top-25 rankings, including 94 polls in a row in the top 10, tied with Alabama for the nation’s longest active streak. The 94-poll streak in the top 10 is tied for the third-longest in poll history, behind Miami (137 from 1985-93) and Nebraska (96 from 1993-98).

But why stop there. To put even more perspective on what the Tigers have accomplished under head coach Dabo Swinney can break it down even further.

Clemson has finished in the top four of the AP Poll in each of the last six years, a program record. Swinney became the fourth coach to record at least six consecutive top-four finishes since the AP poll era, an exclusive list that includes Florida State’s Bobby Bowden (13), Southern California’s Pete Carroll (7) and Oklahoma’s Bud Wilkinson (6).

How is that for perspective?

Clemson’s streak represents the fifth time a program has had a run of at least six top four finishes in the AP Poll. Miami had a seven-year run from 1986-’92 with two different head coaches leading the program.

Swinney always likes to say, “It isn’t how you start the year that matters, it is how you finish.” He is right, and few have finished better than Clemson in the last decade.

The 2020 season marked the 34th year the Tigers were ranked in the final AP poll. It was the 13th time in the last 16 years – and 10th straight year – Clemson was ranked in the final poll.

What is the secret behind Clemson’s success?

It is simple. It is its culture.

It is a culture that is driven by its head coach and a staff that for the most part has stayed intact for a long period of time.

Swinney is now in his 19th season at Clemson, and his 14th as the head coach if you count his interim stint in 2008. From the start of his first season as a full-time head coach in 2009 through 2020, there have been nearly 400 head coaching tenures in the FBS, but only one such tenure at Clemson.

Among the 11 schools ever to qualify for the College Football Playoff, only Clemson and Alabama have had only one head coach since 2009.

As for Swinney’s staff, offensive coordinator Tony Elliott and offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell are now in their 11th season at Clemson. Defensive coordinator Brent Venables is in his 10th overall.

Cornerbacks coach Mike Reed is his ninth season, while quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter is currently in his eighth season. Safeties Coach Mickey Conn and defensive tackles coach Todd Bates are now in their fifth year in Tigertown and defensive ends coach Lemanski Hall is in season four.

Wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham has started his second season, while C.J. Spiller is the Tigers’ new running backs coach. However, Grisham and Spiller both played for Swinney, and Grisham was a part of Swinney’s staff for six seasons prior to becoming his wide receivers’ coach. He spent those six seasons as a graduate assistant and then as an offensive analyst.

Is Ohio State getting snubbed in the polls?

We had our first look at the AP and Amway Coaches polls since the Big Ten came back. Is Ohio State and getting snubbed? It’s complicated.

One of the conversations over the weekend included the major college football polls and Big Ten teams — specifically Ohio State. Why were the Buckeyes were not in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll after it was announced the conference was back in the fray? If not now, when? And where would Ohio State be included when the Big Ten will presumably be eligible during the next release?

It befuddled many when the Buckeyes and their conference brethren were left out. Then there was the Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY. It did include OSU, but down at No. 10. That’s a far cry from the preseason No. 2 ranking it had when we last saw Ohio State before the Big Ten season was shelved amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

First things first. Let’s debunk the MIA status when it comes to the AP Poll. Sure, the Buckeyes are undoubtedly one of the best 25 teams in the nation. However, since they have not played a game yet, and won’t until October 24, the AP decided to wait until next week to have the Big Ten teams eligible. No harm, no foul. We’ll see where the Buckeyes land next Sunday before we bring down the ax of judgment.

Now, about the Amway Coaches Poll. While seeing Ohio State at No. 10 is a bit curious to say the least, there’s still the little problem of OSU not playing a game for another month and a shortened eight-game regular-season. It’s apples to oranges, or buckeyes to well — whatever mascot, fruit, or namesake you want to pick.

But wait, what about the SEC? It hasn’t played any games either. Well, those teams start this week, so while the conference hasn’t played any games yet either, a few missed games isn’t quite the same as a month of missed games. The pollsters are including the Big Ten but are likely taking a wait and see approach until some things smooth out a bit.

So for a few weeks we probable we won’t see the Buckeyes or any Big Ten team up where we would expect in the major polls. Until voters know games are played, or they get closer to starting, there are just too many unknowns. Really, it is the only fair way to do it, as much as we all hate seeing it.

But here’s the good news. The AP and Amway Coaches Poll are just fodder anyways. The poll that really matters is the College Football Playoff rankings and those don’t come out until November 17. By that time, Ohio State will have played four games. That’s enough for the CFP Committeed to get some gauge on the Buckeyes. If they look fantastic, the whole “four best teams” thing comes into play.

So hang in there. After all, it is 2020, and this is par for the course.

AP releases plan for 2020 college football Top 25 poll

The Associated Press has released its plan for the 2020 college football Top 25 poll, will include Big Ten and Pac-12 in preseason poll.

The Associated Press’ annual preseason college football Top 25 poll has typically been the indicator that the college football season is near.  Following the news that the Big Ten and Pac-12 will not be playing football this fall, many have wondered what the first AP Top 25 will look like.  The AP addressed these questions on Friday.

The AP preseason poll is scheduled to be released on August  24 and the AP asked its voters to include all teams, including Big Ten and Pac-12. This is a nice gesture to the players who have had their season taken away from them but will only be that way for the preseason.

“The preseason poll has always been a speculative ranking of teams based on last year’s results and knowledge about the new makeup of teams,” Michael Giarrusso, AP global sports editor, told Ralph D. Russo. “This year, we think it is crucial to give all the teams and all their fans a snapshot look at what the Top 25 would have been to open the season.”

The AP preseason and postseason All-American teams will be decided on similarly. The AP will also rank teams in the spring, should the Big Ten and Pac-12 play then.

“The AP and our voters have no idea what a spring football season will look like. But we are open to adapting and finding a way for our Top 25 voters to be involved in ranking teams if real games are played in the spring of 2021,” Giarrusso said.

The AP is keeping the Top 25 and planning on being “nimble and flexible” for the 2020 season.

UT News: November 25, 2019

The Volunteers football team emerged victorious Saturday night over the Missouri Tigers, earning a postseason bid for the first time in three seasons. Meanwhile, the swimming and diving team had a record-breaking effort at the Tennessee Invitational while the women’s volleyball team split a pair of matches over the weekend. Additionally, the men’s basketball team looks to extend their perfect start tonight while the Lady Vols get set to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Tuesday evening.

Men’s basketball takes on Chattanooga

The 20th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball team takes on the Chattanooga Mocs tonight at Thompson-Boling Arena. The 4-0 Vols look to extend their season-opening winning streak to five against their Southern Conference foes.

The Volunteers and the Mocs have tangled 39 times on the hardwood over the years, with the Vols dropping their last match, 82-69. However, the Big Orange leads the all-time series, 33-6, and sports a 94-17 all-time record against teams from the Southern Conference.

A win would extend UT’s Division I-leading home winning streak to 30 games and also give Tennessee a 52-14 record as a ranked team during the Barnes era, per the Associated Press Top 25 Poll. Head coach Rick Barnes lost his only previous match against the Mocs, that same game that the Vols last lost to them opening the season three years ago.

Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. ET on SEC Network, and can be heard on local Vol Network affiliates.
