Arkansas and Arkansas State will meet to kick off 2023 season

The Razorbacks and Red Wolves will meet in 2023…to host a free community event the night before their season-opening soccer game.

After years of fans clamoring for the two in-state programs to meet, they will finally collide – on a different kind of “football” field in 2023, at least.

The Arkansas soccer team will open their 2023 season against Arkansas State on Thursday, Aug. 17. Last week, the club announced that the Razorbacks and Red Wolves would team up to host a free community clinic on Wednesday, the day before their matchup.

The clinic will will take place at Razorback Field from 5:45-6:45 p.m. and is open to children aged 6-12. Technical soccer training with players of both programs will be featured at the event. Fans can register here for the free event.

While the two biggest universities in the state of Arkansas have avoided regularly facing each other for some time now, events like these show what has been missing. Not only do we get to witness a fun in-state rivalry, but the community, local fans and the entire state benefit from both school crossing paths.

Here’s to hoping we see more stuff like this involving the bigger sports in the near future.

Former Vol infielder announces transfer destination

Former Vol infielder announces transfer destination.

Former Vol Austen Jaslove announced his transfer destination on Thursday.

“Excited for the opportunity to continue my academic and athletic career at Arkansas state University,” Jaslove announced. “Thank you to my family, coaches and friends who have supported me with this decision. Ready to get to work.”

Jaslove appeared in 24 games, including 12 starts, for the Vols in 2023. He recorded eight RBIs, eight runs, four walks, one stolen base and a .189 batting average.

Jaslove redshirted in 2021 and did not appear in any games during the 2022 campaign.

Tennessee advanced to the College World Series in 2021 and 2023.

He came to the Vols from Christian Academy of Knoxville in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Ford chooses Arkansas State as transfer destination

Derrian Ford announced his transfer destination on Friday, as the Magnolia product chose Arkansas State.

Derrian Ford surprisingly entered the NCAA transfer portal on April 27.

Three weeks later, the Magnolia freshman guard announced his destination on his social media.

Arkansas State will be getting his services, after he also visited Ole Miss and Vanderbilt.

Ford played sparingly for the Razorbacks as a freshman, and even though he originally indicated he would return, he ultimately ended up in the portal.

The two-time Gatorade Player of the Year in the state, who won three state titles for Magnolia, may be following a similar path to Desi Sills, who also ended up at Arkansas State for a year after transferring from Arkansas.

Sills is now at Kansas State, and helped lead the Wildcats to the Elite Eight in 2023.

Arkansas State OL Jordan Rhodes invited to Saints rookie minicamp

Arkansas State offensive guard Jordan Rhodes has been invited to the New Orleans Saints rookie minicamp:

Here’s another name on the invite list for New Orleans Saints rookie minicamp, per K8 News anchor Logan Whaley. Former Arkansas State offensive lineman Jordan Rhodes received an invitation to try out at the team facility in a few weeks along with many other first-year pros.

Rhodes has great size for the NFL at 6-foot-4 and 335 pounds, with 34-inch arms. He’s taken a winding path to get here after transferring to Arkansas State from Ole Miss and South Carolina, having played a lot of snaps at both guard spots through his college career. He’s only allowed 3 sacks and drawn 8 penalties on over 1,500 snaps in college so there might be something here. Good luck to him in his tryout.

Crimson Tide add former Nicholls State head coach Austin Claunch to the MBB staff

Nate Oats and Alabama MBB land a massive hire to join MBB staff

After maybe the best season in the history of the Alabama Crimson Tide basketball program, Nate Oats is back on the recruiting trail, but this time it’s for assistant coaches.

Oats and the Crimson Tide are in unprecedented waters after losing all three assistants from the 2022-2023 team to head coaching positions elsewhere. Charlie Henry departed for Georgia Southern, Bryan Hodgson to Arkansas State and Antoine Pettway to Kennesaw State. Oats’ staff was a key part of the Tide’s success this year, especially recruiting, and they will be greatly missed.

Fortunately, Oats is already on the move and making new hires to fill the three positions. Alabama is expected to add Nicholls State head coach, Austin Claunch, to the staff as an assistant. Claunch has been incredibly successful at only 33 years old, going 51-17 in conference play over the past four years with two league titles.

Joining the Tide is a very attractive position for all coaches after seeing them churn out three head coaches in one offseason. Oats will have some major changes to make to the roster, but he needs to get some help with the coaching staff first.

Alabama assistant, Bryan Hodgson, hired for Arkansas State head coaching job

Alabama assistant set to take Arkansas State head coaching job

Nate Oats and the Alabama Crimson Tide basketball program are finally starting to feel some of the pain that Nick Saban and the football team have felt for nearly a decade. Alabama assistant basketball coach, Bryan Hodgson, is set to leave the Tide at the end of the year to take over the Arkansas State program.

It is a major loss for the Tide as he has been a crucial member of the staff and a key recruiter, but it was a well-earned promotion and Tide fans should feel happy for him. Hodgson has been with Oats dating all the way back to their time in Buffalo and Oats has always spoken very highly of Hodgson.

Hodgson now has the task of turning the 13-20 Arkansas State Red Wolves into a tournament team, but first he will continue to chase a ring with the Tide.

UMass vs Arkansas State Game Preview

Why UMass Will Win

The wins might not be there, but there have been signs of improvement in a few spots. The Minutemen lost, but they came up with their best passing game of the year with 266 yards against UConn last week.

Now that passing game has to keep working – it got just its second touchdown pass of the season – to go along with a ground game that has to run through the Arkansas State defensive front.

The Red Wolves are struggling offensively, but they’re having an even tougher time defensively allowing 160 yards or more in seven of the last eight games.

But …

10 Best Picks Against The Spread

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The dead Arkansas State offense should perk up.

There’s been absolutely nothing happening with the ground game – a net -19 yards against South Alabama in the loss a few weeks ago – thanks to a disastrous line that allows way too many plays behind the line.

UMass will come up with several tackles for loss – ASU is the second-worst in the country at keeping defenses from getting behind the line – but the defense has allowed 190 rushing yards or more in six of the last nine games.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been a disastrous losing season for Arkansas State with four straight losses – the wheels came flying off in the loss to South Alabama two weeks ago.

However, the Red Wolves should be able to get the offense going by finally running well enough to be more than awful. UMass will fight the good fight, and it’ll run well and come up with a few scores, but this will be Arkansas State’s day.

Butch Jones discusses being in high-speed police chase

Former Tennessee head coach Butch Jones discusses being in a high-speed police chase.

Second-year Arkansas State head coach Butch Jones was involved in a high-speed police chase while recruiting.

“Probably had the most unique experience I’ve ever had in my life,” Jones said. “Not to bore anyone, but I was out recruiting in Arkansas on Friday and went to a couple of high school games. I get done with the first game. In my car, I’m getting ready to go to the next one.

“I was driving myself, and if you can picture a one lane side road to get out of the interstate, bounded by two cement barriers. The next thing I know, I have a car that’s trying to run me off the road and smash me. I look up and I’m in the middle of a high-speed police pursuit, chase, however you want to do deem it. About $15,000 worth of damage trying running me off the road, escaped the police and they caught him down the road, so that was my bizarre story of the bye week.”

Jones served as Tennessee’s head coach from 2013-17, compiling a 34-27 record and winning three bowl games. Below are Tennessee’s results under Jones from 2013-17.
