J.T. Shrout commits to Arkansas State, Butch Jones

Former Tennessee quarterback J.T. Shrout commits to Arkansas State and Butch Jones.

Former Tennessee quarterback J.T. Shrout announced his commitment to Arkansas State.

“Thankful for the opportunity God has presented me with,” Shrout announced. “Wolves up!”

Shrout appeared in eight games for the Vols from 2018-20.

He completed 37-of-69 passing attempts for 494 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions at Tennessee.

Shrout transferred from Tennessee to Colorado in December 2020.

After arriving at Colorado, Shrout injured his knee, requiring surgery during the second week of fall training camp. He missed the 2021 season due to injury.

Shrout practiced on a limited basis during the spring ahead of the 2022 season. He appeared in nine games for Colorado in 2022.

Utah at Colorado injury update: Buffs without starting QB JT Shrout, S Trevor Woods

JT Shrout and Trevor Woods are out for the Buffs

Colorado will be without starting quarterback JT Shrout and safety Trevor Woods for its season finale against Utah.

Shrout was not in uniform during pregame warmups and BuffZone’s Brian Howell tweeted that Woods is unavailable. Last week against Washington, Shrout took a few big hits and although he finished that game, he was clearly banged up. Backup Drew Carter or Houston transfer Maddox Kopp will likely both see snaps under center vs. the Utes.

Utah is also without a key player as running back Tavion Thomas announced he has played his final college game and will be declaring for the NFL draft.

Kickoff is at 2:10 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network.

USC’s defense must prevent Colorado’s JT Shrout from posting big numbers

Jack Plummer of Cal wasn’t supposed to have a big statistical game vs #USC, but it happened. The next QB the Trojans face: Colorado’s J.T. Shrout.

The Colorado Buffaloes are shorthanded as they prepare to face USC on Friday night.

Jordyn Tyson, a dynamic freshman receiver from Allen, Texas, who caught 22 passes for 470 yards and 4 touchdowns, suffered a season-ending leg injury in Saturday’s 49-10 loss to No. 6 Oregon.

Colorado junior quarterback J.T. Shrout lost his most dangerous weapon last Saturday, but the junior quarterback continues to gain experience. He is confident that the Buffaloes’ passing game can find success even without Jordyn Tyson.

Shrout, a former Tennessee Vol quarterback and Southern California native (Santa Clarita, Calif.), has completed 44.5% of his passes (73-of-164) for 976 yards, six touchdowns and six interceptions.

He has set a new career high for passing yards each of the last three games.

Former Colorado head coach Karl Dorrell, who was fired on Oct. 2, then turned the offense over to true freshman Owen McCown, and Shrout was relegated to the bench.

When McCown was injured during the Oct. 15 game against California, Shrout came off the bench and led the Buffs to a 20-13 overtime win. (Brendon Lewis left the team and put his name in the transfer portal after that win.)

“That’s what everybody wants,” Shrout said about starting. “You want the keys to the car and you want to be the guy that goes and helps everyone get wins.”

With USC’s defense struggling the past few weeks, we’ll see how Shrout and the Colorado offense play against the Trojans, who need to win with flair for the College Football Playoff committee.

Behind Enemy Lines: Covering the Buffs is tough duty these days

We spoke to @BuffaloesWire Jack Carlough about the tough season in Boulder and what we should look for on Saturday.

It would be tough days at the office here at DucksWire if the Oregon football team had little to no chance of winning weekly. Imagine having that feeling we all had after the Georgia game and then experiencing that every Saturday night.

That’s what Colorado fans and those covering the Buffaloes have to deal with. It’s not a good situation in Boulder and since the Ducks have to go out on the road and play the 1-7 Colorado team, we turned to our pal over at BuffaloesWire, Jack Carlough, to get his unique perspective on one of the biggest mismatches of the conference this season.

We talked about a variety of subjects, including the weather for this game. Here’s what Jack had to say.

5 Buffaloes Oregon needs to watch out for in Saturday’s game

Colorado has had a rough season at 1-7, but there are a few players the Ducks need to look out for on Saturday.

Let’s face it. If Colorado wins this game on Saturday, it would be one of the biggest upsets in Pac-12 history and Oregon would start to question everything in the universe.

The Ducks are 31.5-point favorites on the road and this game should be pretty much over by halftime. But upsets do occur and the Buffaloes have to enter this game thinking they can shock the world and get their second win of the season.

Oregon needs to watch out for these five Buffaloes players and keep them in check to make sure the world does not get shocked. Style points will be important for Oregon as well as actual points on the scoreboard. The Ducks enter this game ranked No. 8 in the College Football Playoff and they need to rout the lowly Buffaloes to maintain their ranking.

Here are the five Colorado Buffaloes the Ducks need to pay close attention to in order to win on Saturday.

WATCH: JT Shrout hits Montana Lemonious-Craig for second quarter TD

WATCH: Montana Lemonious-Craig hauls in his second touchdown of the season

JT Shrout and Montana Lemonious-Craig have developed some nice red-zone chemistry with each other. Two weeks after that duo produced the game-winning touchdown against Cal, Shrout found MLC open in the end zone once again in the second quarter of Saturday’s Arizona State game.

The touchdown, a 7-yard slant, cut Arizona State’s lead from 14-3 to 14-10 following the extra point. Unfortunately, the Sun Devils responded on their ensuing drive with a 42-yard TD run by Xazavian Valladay to take a 21-10 lead.

Late in the second quarter, the Buffs’ offense has produced 118 total yards, 55 of which were courtesy of Deion Smith’s legs.

JT Shrout to start at QB for Colorado at Oregon State

Mike Sanford is giving JT Shrout the start on Saturday

The Colorado Buffaloes are fresh off their first win of the 2022 season, a 20-13 overtime victory against California.

Mike Sanford stepped in as interim head coach after Karl Dorrell was fired and got the first win of the year. However, the Buffs’ next opponent is Oregon State, a much tougher game than the one they played against the Bears.

The Buffs will also have a new starting quarterback under center in Corvallis. Last week, Owen McCown suffered too many blows against Cal, prompting JT Shrout to enter and throw the game-winning touchdown pass to Montana Lemonious-Craig. McCown is still injured and Shrout will be getting the start at Oregon State, Sanford said on Thursday.

Earlier in the week, McCown was practicing, but it appears that Sanford will run with Shrout, the former Tennessee transfer who was competing with Brendon Lewis earlier in the year.

Lewis entered the transfer portal this week, and now it will be between Shrout and McCown for the remainder of the season.

This will be Shrout’s third start of the season, although neither of the two went particularly well. Perhaps the coaching change with Sanford will ignite Shrout into the QB they had hoped he would be when he came from Rocky Top.

Unfortunately, it won’t be easy against Oregon State, which has been one of the biggest surprises of the Pac-12 this year.

Battle for starting QB job now a three-Buff race

If you have two quarterbacks, you have none. But what if you have three?

Three weeks in and it’s still unclear who the CU Buffs’ starting quarterback is.

To summarize: In Week 1, Brendon Lewis got the start but was outplayed by JT Shrout, who was then rewarded with the start against Air Force. However, Shrout struggled in the Springs and let Lewis re-enter the race heading into Minnesota. Things got really complicated against the Gophers as Karl Dorrell let Lewis and Shrout trade drives. Neither found any success and in what was CU’s final drive, Owen McCown came in and produced a touchdown — albeit against a weaker Minnesota defense that was up 49.

All caught up?

The Buffs are now back in Boulder and Dorrell told the media on Wednesday that Lewis, Shrout and McCown are all getting first-team reps in preparation for UCLA.

Offensive coordinator Mike Sanford was also asked about the situation at QB (h/t BuffZone):

“You go through three games and you don’t have the ability to fully, clearly name a starting quarterback based off the information that we had from spring ball and fall camp,” Sanford said. “Really, the information never truly clarified itself and that’s just a reality. You could go back and forth and say that you’d want to make one guy the guy and just live with it, but that was a challenging proposition from the standpoint that nobody had truly stood out as the sole starter”

REPORT: JT Shrout to start at QB vs. Air Force

REPORT: JT Shrout will be starting for the Buffs at Air Force

Around 5 p.m. MT on Friday evening, Brent Briggeman of the Colorado Springs Gazette reported that JT Shrout will start at quarterback for the Buffs on Saturday at Air Force. Brian Howell of BuffZone confirmed soon after that he was getting the same information from a source.

Shrout made his CU debut in Week 1 against TCU and the general consensus was that he played better than Brendon Lewis, who started the game. It also didn’t hurt that Shrout’s final drive culminated in a touchdown pass to Jordyn Tyson.

Depending on how things go, I still expect Karl Dorrell to rotate Lewis in at some point, though. But for now, Shrout will be taking the first snaps at Falcon Stadium.

Pac-12 analyst Jon Wilner believes JT Shrout is CU’s best option at Air Force

Jon Wilner gave his opinion on who the Buffs QB should be

The Colorado Buffaloes rotated between Brendon Lewis and JT Shrout in an ugly season opener against the TCU Horned Frogs. Simply put, the Buffs’ offense was slow in the second half, and head coach Karl Dorrell faced backlash after putting Lewis in to begin the third quarter.

Now, with Air Force on tap in Week 2, Dorrell still hasn’t revealed his exact plans at QB. The likelihood is that both Lewis and Shrout play and alternate once again, which could make for another rough outing for the Buffs. As of Thursday, Air Force is favored by over two touchdowns at home against Colorado. Pac-12 insider Jon Wilner gave some interesting opinions on that and admitted that he believes in JT Shrout:

Which is worse: Losing by 25 points at home to TCU or being a 17.5-point underdog at Air Force? The correct answer, of course, is losing by more than 17.5 at Air Force. But we don’t think that will happen. Get ready for the JT Shrout show.

In Wilner’s weekly spread picks, he has Colorado beating the spread, which is certainly something. The triple-option system that the Falcons run might give the Buffs problems, but we’re also anxious to see which of Dorrell’s QBs he goes with in critical situations.
