For a moment, it looked like former Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis might be on his way back to the NFL.
Lewis was a name that came up during this last hiring cycle, including a link to the Dallas Cowboys. That came a year removed from his linking up with Herm Edwards as a special advisor with the Arizona State Sun Devils.
Now? Lewis got a promotion and will serve as a co-defensive coordinator alongside Antonio Pierce.
“Marvin Lewis is someone that I have come to trust wholeheartedly during my career and his coaching acumen will prove to be invaluable as we continue to push this program forward,” Sun Devils head coach Herm Edwards said. “He has coached at the highest level of football and spearheaded some elite defenses in the process. That kind of experience cannot be measured and his passion for teaching will extend beyond the student-athletes, but also to our coaching staff itself.”
While rumblings around Lewis going back to the NFL made sense given his level of experience, it seemed likely he’d just stick with Edwards and Arizona State given the proximity to family and otherwise.
Now Lewis has a promotion to boot, though don’t be shocked if his name comes up around this time again next year when several teams in need of head coaches throw him on lists.
