WATCH: Indiana head coach Archie Miller heaps praise on Ohio State postgame

Indiana head coach Archie Miller had nothing but extremely complimentary things to say about Ohio State after his team lost to the Buckeyes.

The Ohio State basketball team imposed its will against Indiana on Saturday. The game got a bit away from the Hoosiers early on, but they climbed back in it with a run midway through the first half. Unfortunately for Indiana, it was too little too late against a team the caliber of what the Buckeyes have formed into.

Head coach Archie Miller knew it would be a tough matchup for his team before the game, and he felt no different afterward. In fact, the Hoosier head man met with the media after the game and went into some glowing remarks about Ohio State off the bat and unscripted. He spent considerable time discussing why OSU is such a tough matchup. It didn’t end there. He continued to compliment the toughness, talent, and depth of the Buckeyes.

It was quite the endorsement for the opposition, and in case you missed any of Miller’s comments, we’re sharing them with you thanks to the YouTube channel of Inside the Hall.

Watch and listen to how impressed Miller was with OSU below.

It’s extremely rare to see an honest assessment from a coach when describing the opposition, but there was good reason for it if you watched the game. Ohio State has a lot going for it right now.

What Indiana HC Archie Miller said about Wisconsin basketball after the game

Head coach Greg Gard and the Wisconsin Badgers improved to 4-1 in conference play last night when they defeated the Indiana Hoosiers

The Wisconsin Badgers improved to 4-1 in conference play last night when they defeated the Indiana Hoosiers 80-73 in double overtime.

Indiana Head Coach Archie Miller had a lot to say about the Badgers after the game, mostly about what they were able to do on the defensive end.

Related: Film room: Here is how Wisconsin basketball dismantled Minnesota

“When you play the best teams in the country, which Wisconsin is, you have to find a way to step up, execute and make some tough plays,” Miller started with. “We didn’t do that when we needed to the most. Give them credit. They made some really good plays at the end of the game.”

The head coach continued to note how the Badgers “don’t give you a lot [defensively] and they’re very tough to pierce the paint with their bigs staying back the majority of the game.”

Miller was then asked about the play of his star Trayce Jackson-Davis in pick-and-roll scenarios and how the Badgers adapted to them as the game moved along.

“I thought [Wisconsin’s] ball screen defense was a little better there late when they didn’t let our guards get all the way down and they didn’t drop as much,” Miller said” They did a little more switching as well to stay in front, and we had our chances to be able to pop it inside a few times when we needed to. But when you look at Trayce [Jackson-Davis], you got 16 field goals in 49 minutes. Usually, he’s going to draw more fouls and get more free throw attempts…I think at the end of the day [Wisconsin] stepped up, they played really tough, they kept the ball in front of them really well with their switches and we weren’t able to get downhill as much…Good teams do that. They adjust, they play all the way through.”

Finally, Miller had some praise for the Badgers in the extra periods—both on the offensive and defensive end of the court.

On Tyler Wahl and his two big-time shots in double overtime:

“Late in the game they took advantage of a couple switches, but the two 3s in the second overtime that realistically broke down our defense kind of cracked the game for them.”

On the Hoosiers’ play at the end of the first overtime which the Badgers were able to successfully stop:

“End of the first overtime we called two timeouts and we drew up a play, the same play twice. We wanted to give Al Durham an opportunity to see if he could clear it out on the left side. I think they must’ve done a good job of keeping him from being able to get by. But we didn’t execute out of the timeouts to be able to keep the spacing. The bottom line is they tied it up.”

With the win, Wisconsin moves to 10-2 on the season and 4-1 in Big Ten play. All eyes now turn to their pivotal matchup against No. 10 Michigan just 4 days from now.

Indiana basketball dealing with injury issues ahead of tonight’s matchup with Wisconsin

The Hoosiers will be shorthanded in Madison

Indiana looks like they will be shorthanded tonight in Madison when the Hoosiers face the Badgers in a Big Ten clash.

In Indiana’s 63-55 win over Maryland on Monday, second-leading scorer Armaan Franklin exited with an ankle issue, and head coach Archie Miller did not give a promising diagnosis postgame. While Miller did not meet with the media on Wednesday, he said on Monday that Franklin was doubtful to go in Madison.

Senior center Joey Brunk has been out this entire year due to what was originally though to be a minor back injury turning more serious. Without Franklin’s 12.7 points and nearly five rebounds per game, Indiana’s backcourt depth shrinks to relying on true freshman. This could be an opportunity for five-star 2020 signee Khristian Lander to get extensive run. The premier high school recruit in the state of Indiana hasn’t been heavily featured so far for Archie Miller and crew.

The 7-4 Hoosiers and the 9-2 Wisconsin Badgers will tip things off at 6 CT in Madison.

Scouting Report: IU is attempting to build a defensive identity, how Wisconsin can counter that on Saturday

Under Archie Miller, the Indiana Hoosiers have been identified by the fact that they often lack a true identity. There was no secret that Miller’s Dayton teams bought into a defensive philosophy and identity that brought success. The same has not completely translated to his time in Bloomington, but the signs have begun to show. Indiana has worked their way up to being ranked 32nd in adjusted defensive efficiency according to KenPom. There is a stark contrast between the defense Badger fans saw in Madison against the Hoosiers in December, and the one they will see Saturday morning.

The Hoosiers have not allowed a team to score more than 67 points in their last five contests. Wisconsin just ended a streak of six straight games of scoring more than 67 points in their 63-48 win over Northwestern. Something will have to give.

The identity of the entire Indiana program had to change on the defensive end of the floor when Miller took over. Previous IU coach Tom Crean almost never, at any point of the year, had top-50 defenses according to KenPom adjusted defensive efficiency. The personnel of this 2019-20 group lends itself well to defense, especially on the interior. Trayce Jackson-Davis is an impressive young rim protector who also has the speed to be switchable on high ball screens. That is one of the attributes that will make the New Yorker an intriguing NBA prospect in years to come. Jackson-Davis averages nearly 2 blocks per game, and almost as many blocks as the rest of his teammates combined. The true freshman’s 6’9″, 245-pound frame lends itself well to the pack-line principles that Coach Miller is attempting to instill in his team.

It’s a difficult task predicting if the Badgers can find offensive success against Indiana based on their 84-point outburst at home. When the two teams met on December 7th, IU’s defense was not the only thing that would change as the year progressed. UW was led that day by Kobe King and his 24 points on an efficient 10-15 shooting. No King has been no problem for the Badger offense so far. Success that day at the Kohl Center also came through playing inside-out basketball. The Badgers broke down the pack-line by taking advantage of what it tries to do. Any pack-line defense has the goal of packing the paint and sagging defensively to prevent interior penetration. By getting the basketball inside to Nate Reuvers, the junior big not only had 20 points against IU, but opened things up from the outside that allowed UW to shoot 8-20 (40%) from three. This time around, the Badgers also have Big Ten super-sub Micah Potter. The Ohio State transfer sat out of the last matchup due to NCAA rules. The stretch big man can certainly provide the perfect inside-out counter against the pack-line if he is feeling it from beyond the arc. If the Badgers start inside-out and knock down open looks as a result, it could be a long senior day for the Hoosiers.

Scouting Report: How Archie Miller and the Hoosiers stack up offensively

Wisconsin basketball is looking to do what seemed impossible in mid-December: win a share of the regular-season Big Ten title. Standing in the way of an eighth-straight Badger victory are the Indiana Hoosiers at historic Assembly Hall. Indiana comes in with an overall record of 19-11 and 9-10 in the BIG. On Saturday morning, UW is looking for a season sweep of IU following their December 7th blowout win at the Kohl Center. Here is what Badger fans can expect offensively from Indiana head coach Archie Miller and his team this time around:

The Hoosiers are at their best when freshman stud Trayce Jackson-Davis leads them on both ends. The Greenwood, Indiana native has led this otherwise experienced team as a true freshman to the tune of a team-high 13.9 points per contest. His efficiency in the paint has lead to an overall 57.8% shooting clip, although the 6’9″ uber-athletic forward has had struggles on the road. At home, Jackson-Davis is averaging 15.7 points per game and shooting nearly 60% from the field. On the road, those numbers drop to 10.6 points per game and 53.6% from the floor. The Hoosier big man can step out and hit the mid-ranger, but does his best work on the interior using a combination of athleticism and impressive footwork. Expect Nate Reuvers to be tasked with handling Jackson-Davis. That matchup of rim protectors and scoring leaders should be the most intriguing battle on the floor. The Badgers did a solid job on the freshman star in their 84-64 win over IU back in December. Jackson-Davis only attempted six shots en route to 9 points.

Although recently turnovers have not been as major of an issue as earlier in the year, IU still generally struggles at taking care of the basketball. They average more turnovers than any Big Ten team at 13.0 per game. The Hoosiers are a middle-of-the-pack team in terms of scoring as they come into Saturday averaging 71.3 points per outing. The inconsistency and turnover issues are a reflection of inconsistent guard play that has derailed this team at times. Senior guard Devonte Green sums this up perfectly. The New York native began the year hurt, and eventually worked his way back into a starting role. He has been in and out of that starting role this year due to inconsistency offensively. A 27-point outburst in a win against Iowa on February 13th saw Green nail 7 treys, and he immediately followed that performance with 3 points and a horrendous shooting night against Michigan in a loss. The combo guard will look to finish strong on his senior day against the Badgers.

The Hoosiers offensive inconsistency plays itself out even in the small sample size of one game. There are stretches where this team can’t find a basket, especially on the road, and other stretches where their guards get hot from the perimeter and they become world-beaters. To beat Wisconsin, a top-25 team in terms of defensive efficiency according to KenPom, the Hoosiers likely have to shoot better than their 32% average from distance, and have the world-beating Devonte Green show up in Bloomington. With that being said, if the Badgers come up short on Saturday morning it will likely have more to do with their offense than their defense.

IU’s Archie Miller: Michigan ‘one of the best teams in the country’

Why the Indiana head coach thinks the Wolverines are currently one of the best teams in all of college basketball.

[jwplayer uEDpZTuh-XNcErKyb]

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — In the outset of Sunday’s game between Indiana and Michigan, though the Wolverines got out to an early lead, the Hoosiers hung tough, looking like it was going to be a long slog of a matchup between the two Big Ten East foes.

But, the maize and blue’s offense was unstoppable, as was their rebounding, and the crimson and white fell, 89-65.

Afterwards, Indiana head coach Archie Miller didn’t mince words, didn’t look for silver linings. He immediately sat down on the dais and credited Michigan for dominating the Bloomington-based squad.

“Disappointing game for our team,” Miller said. “It’s not that you lose, it’s how you lose and we got completely dominated today. Especially late, midway though the second-half. You look at the rebounding total in the game, you look at their free throw attempts in the game, assists-to-turnover — no answer for them defensively. And then couldn’t compete with them long enough to hang in.”

[lawrence-related id=21195,21164]

But he continued, and went further than that.

Yes, Michigan fans are well aware of how much different the Wolverines are with Isaiah Livers in the lineup. After a tough January, which saw the team from Ann Arbor lose four-straight for the first time in years, once Livers came back a few games ago, Michigan, once again, looked like the team it was when it handed Gonzaga its only loss of the season in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament.

Miller sees the same deal, his team running into a buzzsaw with Livers back in the fold. As he figures, with a healthy Michigan starting five on the court, the Wolverines are among the best teams in college basketball.

“Give them credit, obviously they’re a very, very good team,” Miller said. “Especially now that they have Isaiah Livers back to the table — they’re one of the best teams in the country. Very, very tough to guard the way they shoot it, the way they spread you out.”

This was the only regular season matchup between the Wolverines and Hoosiers, though they certainly could meet up again in either the Big Ten Tournament or in the NCAA Tournament next month.

With the Indiana loss and Michigan’s win, both teams are now 16-9 on the season overall. The Hoosiers have now lost 7 straight to the Wolverines in basketball, going back to Tom Crean’s tenure leading the team.

Prediction

Michigan 74, Indiana 69

Moneyline (ML)

The last time Indiana (+280) got a win against the Wolverines in Michigan (-358) was in 2016, and they have lost three straight in the Crisler Center. Since 2017 (Archie Miller’s first season as Indiana’s head coach), the Hoosiers are just 23-30 outright against Big Ten opponents, whereas Michigan has the third-best conference record at 40-18 over that timespan. There are not obvious matchup edges for the Hoosiers to exploit so I cannot talk myself into a moneyline bet on their side, and Michigan -358 is too chalkyPASS ON A MONEYLINE WAGER.

Against the Spread (ATS)

The Crisler Center will be rocking on Sunday afternoon when Michigan hosts Indiana for their only meeting this season. The Hoosiers struggle on the road going 1-5 against the spread away from Indiana. Also, Indiana has a 1-8 ATS record in day games and Michigan has a 7-4 ATS record in the day. Indiana is 10-19 ATS in away games since 2017, which is the second-worst record for Big Ten over that period. Michigan is 24-20-2 ATS at home and a Big Ten’s best 35-21-2 ATS against conference foes since 2017.

BET MICHIGAN -7.5 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

The 137.5 is a toss-up total. Michigan and Indiana’s combined Over/Under record is 24-24 in all games and 14-14 in Big Ten games. But, the Under has cashed in three out of the last four Michigan-Indiana meetings so I LEAN UNDER 137.5 (-110).

Indiana head coach Archie Miller calls Ohio State a Final Four caliber team

Indiana was able to beat Ohio State in the second half Saturday, but that didn’t change the high opinion Archie Miller has of the Buckeyes.

Indiana used a big start to the second half to separate from Ohio State this weekend and finished it with a twelve-point win. The Buckeyes struggled to slow down Indiana in the first twenty minutes as well, but played resilient and aggressive to reel things back in and took the lead into halftime.

It didn’t last though. The turnovers and poor shooting were just too much to overcome. OSU head coach Chris Holtmann and fans had to feel pretty dejected and frustrated after the game, but that’s not how Hoosier head coach Archie Miller saw things. In fact, he thinks Ohio State is a team that can go pretty deep in March.

While speaking to the media after, Miller heaped praise on this Buckeye squad.

A Final Four team? That would have been much easier to believe a couple of weeks ago, but with Ohio State losing four in a row now and looking absolutely lost on how to take care of the ball, many are wondering if this team was punching above its weight early in the season.

Is Miller just elevating the opponent with his comments like some coaches do, or does he really believe this Buckeye team can make a deep reach in March?

Watch what Indiana head coach Archie Miller said about Ohio State postgame

Indiana head coach Archie Miller met with the media after the win over Ohio State. Here’s what he said about the Buckeyes.

Ohio State fought like heck to get back in the game in the first half against Indiana Saturday, but then fell behind again after halftime. It was a bit too much to overcome against a quality opponent on the road.

Many Ohio State fans feel like the sky is falling now after four-straight losses, but this conference is awfully tough, and there’s not a night off anywhere. The Hoosier head man knows that. Archie Miller met with the media after the game to discuss his team’s performance — and despite the loss by Ohio State — had some very complimentary things to say about coach Holtmann and this Buckeye squad.

You too can watch and get a listen to make you feel like the season isn’t lost after a tough stretch here. I mean, who better to listen to than a coach that knows the Buckeyes well.

On to the next one. Ohio State will host Nebraska on Tuesday night and will again attempt to stop this losing streak.
