A legendary Saints quarterback reached out to Darren Rizzi after Falcons win

A legendary Saints QB congratulated Darren Rizzi on beating the Falcons, but he initially thought it was Archie Manning’s famous grandson, not ‘the big dog’ himself:

A legendary former New Orleans Saints quarterback congratulated Darren Rizzi on beating the Falcons, but he initially thought it was Archie Manning’s famous grandson, not Archie himself, texting him on Monday. Rizzi shared the story and his family’s surprising connection with the Mannings when reflecting on his first career win as an NFL head coach.

Plenty of well-wishers reached out after Rizzi ended the Saints’ seven-game losing streak, but he says the message he received from the elder Manning stands out most.

“I got a lot, my favorite one so far is from Archie Manning,” Rizzi grinned. “Archie reached out. And little side story to that, my son Christian who is at the University of Texas, he and Arch are good friends. When I glanced at my phone I thought it was Arch. And then I realized, ‘Oh no, this is from the big dog, this is Archie.’ And so we had a nice correspondence. I really, really appreciated that, that was pretty cool. He was the one who started it all, right?”

Christian Rizzi is a deep snapper for the Longhorns, which isn’t much of a surprise given his father’s history coaching special teams. But their family has crossed paths with the Mannings before, and at times competed in high school football games.

“His grandsons and my sons played against each other, so that was pretty cool,” Rizzi continued.  “I’ve talked to Archie before here at practice and everything. That was pretty nice, a pretty neat text to get.”

It sounds like Manning will be watching when Rizzi leads the Saints into their next game with the Cleveland Browns. Getting out of a 3-7 skid is no small task, but that’s exactly what Rizzi must do to salvage this season. Who knows? Maybe the Saints will be in position to draft the younger Manning in a year or two once he turns pro.

Derek Carr just tied an unfortunate Archie Manning record

Derek Carr’s loss to the Panthers on Sunday tied an unfortunate record with former Saints quarterback Archie Manning:

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has tied one the most unfortunate records a signal-caller can have as of Sunday afternoon, in addition to the fact he has now been defeated by 31 different teams.

That’s not precisely the return he wanted after missing several weeks due to injury, and there were several Saints fans were hoping that Carr’s return would instill some new life into the offense. Instead, Carr just tied former Saints quarterback Archie Manning’s to hold one of the NFL’s most unfortunate records.

Over 11 seasons, Manning lost a total of 91 games. Carr has officially matched that exact number. His brother, David Carr, is also high on the list in terms of losses as a starting quarterback. Here’s a look at the full breakdown of all of that:

  • 4 seasons: David Carr (43)
  • 5 seasons: David Carr (53)
  • 6 seasons: David Carr (56)
  • 7 seasons: Derek Carr (63)
  • 8 seasons: Derek Carr (70)
  • 9 seasons: Derek Carr (79)
  • 10 seasons: Derek Carr (87)
  • 11 seasons: Derek Carr and Archie Manning (91)

While it was technically a close game, not a lot went incredibly right for the Saints as they faced one of the worst teams in the NFL in the Carolina Panthers, still managing to fall 23-22 while being a slight favorite.

Carr finished the game 18-for-31 passing for 236 yards with 1 touchdown. His injury did hinder the Saints, but it is apparent there are far more things wrong with the team than just injured players and it’s reasonable to expect there will be a large amount of turnover when the season concludes.

With that, the Saints are now on a seven-game losing streak. They will face a tough task in snapping that with the risk of getting swept in the series by the Atlanta Falcons in New Orleans next Sunday.

For now, the Saints simply have a lot of thinking to do.

Legendary Saints QB reached out to Spencer Rattler ahead of NFL debut

As Spencer Rattler gets ready for his first NFL start, Saints legend Archie Manning reached out to him with an encouraging message:

Spencer Rattler is getting ready for his NFL debut against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Rattler’s week of preparation included a motivational text message from legendary former New Orleans Saints quarterback Archie Manning.

Manning knows what it’s like to be in this position. He made his first start as a rookie in 1971 with New Orleans. Manning’s message was simple: “He reached out a few days ago, just said he’s rooting for me.”

Rattler then went on to call Manning an awesome resource. This isn’t the first time he reached out to the young quarterback. Rattler said the Saints legend spoke with him after the draft to congratulate Rattler. This isn’t just because Rattler was picked by the Saints. Rattler impressed him at the 2022 Manning Passing Academy, and since meeting, that relationship has blossomed into something like a mentorship.

Rattler described it by saying, “We’ve created a great relationship over the last couple of years. He would always check up on me throughout the years after games.”

That’s a great resource to have in your corner. Let’s see if Rattler can make the most of this opportunity.

ManningCast to feature legendary Saints QB vs. Chiefs

The Saints vs. Chiefs “ManningCast” has a strong guest list, with legendary former Saints quarterback Archie Manning among them:

The Kansas City Chiefs versus New Orleans Saints matchup in Week 5 will be featured as a “ManningCast” game on ESPN2, scheduled for 7:13 p.m. CT/8:13 p.m. ET. The guest list for this week’s broadcast group makes it worth watching. Peyton and Eli Manning will sit down with theeir father, Saints legend Archie Manning. He’s also the father of Cooper Manning and grandfather of Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning.

Additionally, it will include legendary former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, and actor Paul Rudd, a Chiefs superfan and the narrator of the 2007 season of “Hard Knocks,” which featured the Chiefs as well.

Having this group together will be an interesting dynamic, as Eli Manning will be able to talk with Belichick about the two Super Bowl victories he had against him. The Manning family will primarily be together on broadcast, and we can get perspective from Rudd about the Chiefs and his fandom as well. The “ManningCast” always has some fun broadcast groups and guests, but this one will be a fun one no doubt.

Eli Manning had a funny reaction to Arch Manning’s first college start

Eli Manning wanted to drop in to remind everyone that he had a better college debut than Archie, Peyton and Arch.

Arch Manning made the first start of his college football career on Saturday, helping the Texas Longhorns defeat the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks 51-3.

After the game, many fans and pundits were quick to compare the stats of Arch to his uncle’s first NCCA starts — and his grandfather’s, too.

Archie Manning (the patriarch of the family) threw for 116 yards and had two touchdowns against one interception in his first start at Ole Miss in 1968.

Peyton Manning was limited to 79 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions in his Tennessee debut in 1994. Arch Manning had 258 yards with two scores and two interceptions on Saturday.

Eli Manning topped them all with 271 passing yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions in his first start at Ole Miss in 2001.

Eli took to Twitter/X on Monday to let his dad, brother and nephew know that he bested them: “I win!”

Arch’s father, Cooper Manning, was a star wide receiver in high school, but his football career was cut short by spinal stenosis before college. Cooper is the older brother of Peyton and Eli.

Peyton and Eli both won two Super Bowls in the NFL — Peyton won one title with the Indianapolis Colts and another with the Denver Broncos. Eli won two titles with the New York Giants.

Eli’s son, Charley (6), made his flag football debut on Saturday. Peyton’s son, Marshall (13), is a youth football player. They’ll look to follow in the footsteps of their dads and their cousin, Arch, in the coming years.

Who is Arch Manning’s father?

Arch Manning’s father, Cooper, is the older brother of Peyton and Eli. His football career was cut short by spinal stenosis before college.

Arch Manning is currently sitting behind Texas Longhorns starting quarterback Quinn Ewers, but the 19-year-old quarterback is already a household name, thanks to his name.

Arch Manning’s father is Cooper Manning, who is the brother of more well-known former NFL quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Eli Manning.

The patriarch of the family is Archie Manning — Arch’s grandfather — who had three sons — Cooper, Peyton and Eli — with his wife, Olivia. That makes Peyton and Eli uncles to Arch.

All three sons were star football players at Isidore Newman School in New Orleans, Peyton and Eli as quarterbacks and Cooper as a wide receiver. After high school, Cooper was diagnosed with spinal stenosis, which ended his football career before he had a chance to play in college football at Ole Miss.

Peyton and Eli went on to later play in the NFL, and they both won a pair of Super Bowls. Peyton won titles with the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos, and Eli won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants.

Because of his family pedigree, football fans have big expectations for Arch. He is still a backup at Texas, though, and the young QB won’t be eligible for the NFL draft before 2026 at the earliest. So there’s still plenty of time for Arch to write his own football story with support from his dad, Cooper.

8 days until Saints’ season opener: Looking back at the career of Archie Manning

Looking back at the career of Archie Manning.

Our countdown to the start of the New Orleans Saints’ 2024 season continues with Day 8. It just so happens to be that only one player has ever had the privilege of wearing this number, and that player is Archie Manning.

The father of Eli and Peyton Manning attended Ole Miss where he was a two-time first-team All-SEC player as well as a third-team All-American in 1969. In the 1971 NFL Draft, Manning was selected no. 2 overall by the Saints. During his time in New Orleans, Manning was for the most part a highly talented player on a not so talented team which led to some hard times in the Bayou. However, even with little success as a team Manning was able to carve out a 12-year career with the Saints passing for nearly 22,000 yards and 115 passing touchdowns. Manning was also named to two consecutive Pro Bowls in 1978 and 1979. Today, Manning is now honored and recognized to the highest degree as a he was elected into the teams Ring of Honor as well as the teams Hall of Fame. And for all the reasons above, it is likely that no other Saint will wear his No. 8 again.

Here are some great moments of Archie during his time as a Saint:

Archie Manning’s 59-yard TD to Henry Childs is the Saints Play of the Day

Let’s turn back the clock. Archie Manning’s 59-yard touchdown pass to Henry Childs is the New Orleans Saints Play of the Day:

There are 59 days to go until the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2024 regular season against the Carolina Panthers, so we’re turning the clock back to 1977 to highlight the Saints Play of the Day. Archie Manning found Henry Childs on a great route into the Green Bay Packers secondary for a 59-yard touchdown in that year’s season-opener.

The play went down as Manning’s touchdown pass, but truthfully Childs did most of the work. The receiver made a slight adjustment to jump and catch Manning’s pass while keeping his legs moving in stride, then he maneuvered one Packers defender to crash into another and spring him free into the open field. He shrugged off one would-be tackler, then changed his angle to the goal line to put the other Packers in pursuit at a disadvantage. Textbook run-after-catch skills.

It was all part of a furious — but futile — comeback effort. The Packers had gone up 24-0 at halftime, but running back Chuck Muncie rumbled in for two touchdown runs to cut into that deficit before Childs fought his way into the end zone. The Green Bay defense buckled down after that, though, and the Saints lost in front of their home crowd 24-20. They only won three games that season as the 10-year-old franchise continued working to find its way. But moments like this long touchdown from Manning to Childs did a lot to keep fans engaged and excited about what success might look like for their team.

Jackson Arnold among Friday’s standouts at Manning Passing Academy

Jackson Arnold is among Manning Passing Academy standouts on Friday.

The 2024 college football season is going to be highly anticipated for the Oklahoma Sooners. It’s their first year in the SEC. The Sooners will have a new offensive line. And, more importantly, they’ll have a new starting quarterback at the helm.

Jackson Arnold will take over for Dillon Gabriel to lead an offense that averaged 41.7 points per game. He’s looked good in limited opportunities, but is hoping to elevate his game this offseason as he takes part in the Manning Passing Academy, a football camp conducted by the legendary quarterback trio Archie Manning, Peyton Manning and Eli Manning.

In Friday’s action, Arnold was considered one of the session’s standout performers by On3.

Arnold’s play as a freshman proved his toughness outside the pocket, and the former 5-star had good zip on his passes at Friday Night Lights and had some nice deep ball throws. Arnold told On3 he feels much more confident entering Year 2 of college ball in Norman, and his arm talent showed in South Louisiana on Friday night. – On3

Arnold has the talent to be another highly productive quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners. His size, arm strength and accuracy give Arnold a chance to take the world by storm in his first season as a starter.

If Oklahoma’s offensive line can give him enough time to let his playmakers get down the field, Arnold’s going to have a big year.

NFL draft: Archie Manning is the Saints’ last first-round quarterback

It’s been 53 years since the New Orleans Saints drafted a first-round quarterback. How does their drought compare to the rest of the NFL?

Quarterbacks are coming at a premium these days. Because of that, you see more quarterbacks drafted in the first round. The New Orleans Saints haven’t followed that trend, however. They haven’t drafted a quarterback in the first round since Archie Manning in 1971. That’s a 53-year gap — the longest active such drought in the NFL.

The next-closest team is the Dallas Cowboys, who haven’t drafted a quarterback in the first round since Troy Aikman in 1989. That’s still 18 years after the Saints took Manning.

Let’s take it beyond the first round. The Saints haven’t drafted a starting quarterback in over 30 years. Ian Book starting a game because of COVID is the closest they’ve come. New Orleans has instead opted for the free agent route. It’s easy to take that road when Drew Brees is your franchise quarterback for over a decade, but this trend obviously predates Brees.

Technically, the Saints have had two former first-rounders start for them recently. Derek Carr and Jameis Winston were both former first-round picks but not by the Saints.

Seventeen teams have drafted a quarterback in the first round since 2020. All but three teams have drafted a quarterback since the turn of the century. Like the doctors say, results may vary. The success of Carr, specifically this season, will determine when the Saints are able to update their position on the list with a more recent year than 1971.
