The NBA star makes a case while throwing a football at Georgia Tech earlier this week.

Edwards was Georgia’s first No. 1 overall pick in program history when the Minnesota Timberwolves took him in the 2020 NBA draft after one spectacular year in Athens.

Edwards earned SEC Freshman of the Year honors in the 2019-20 season at UGA, and went on to be named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in his first year in Minnesota.

Former Georgia basketball star Anthony Edwards, the No. 1 pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2020 NBA Draft, has earned rookie honors.

Former Georgia guard Anthony Edwards, the No.1 pick of the 2020. NBA Draft, was a man on a mission during the month of March.

After leading all rookies with 24.2 points per game in March to go along with 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.6 steals over 13 games, the Minnesota Timberwolves rising star was named the Western Conference’s Player of the Month.

Edwards’ 24.2 points per game in March rank third all-time in a calendar month by a player under 20 in NBA history. He trailed only Carmelo Anthony (27.1) and LeBron James (26.3) (min. 10 games).

He was also the only rookie to average over 20 points last month. Additionally, he led all rookies in total points (314), made field goals (116), total three-pointers (34) and minutes per game (35.1).

Edwards has recorded a steal in every game since February 24, putting him at 16 consecutive games with at least one tally in the stat column. That’s the longest active streak in the league.

Anthony Edwards scores career-high 34 points, has message for doubters

Former Georgia basketball star Anthony Edwards put on a career-high performance, scoring 34 points in a Minnesota Timberwolves victory.

Former Georgia basketball superstar Anthony Edwards set another career-high in points this Sunday night, dropping his new best of 34 in a Minnesota Timberwolves 114 – 112 win over the Portland Trailblazers.

The game stayed close for its entirety, the biggest lead for either team in the first three quarters being just six points.  In the fourth quarter Edwards had a collision with Trailblazers center Enes Kanter which caused him to miss some time.  He then checked in and went off, going for 13 points in the fourth including an explosive dunk to give Minnesota a 10-point lead.

Edwards has now scored at least 19 points in his last seven games, beginning to silence the doubters who believe the T-wolves should’ve taken LaMelo Ball with the first pick.

“To talk about who they should have took No. 1, they took me. It’s over. It’s nothing to talk about. On to the next. We’re trying to win basketball games at this point. Whoever is still talking about that, they can just kick rocks, I guess.”

The Timberwolves are now 2-6 under new coach Chris Finch and have won two of their past three games.  The grass is starting to turn greener in Minnesota, and it all starts with the spark that is Anthony Edwards.

The Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Anthony Edwards is off to a great start to his basketball career. Edwards, who is the No. 1 pick out of the University of Georgia, has looked explosive and is improving each and every game.

Edwards dropped some jaws with an incredible dunk last night. He deserves an invitation to the slam dunk contest as a part of the NBA All-Star weekend.

What a highlight for Anthony Edwards. The Raptors went on to defeat the Timberwolves 86-81 in one of the lower scoring games of the NBA season.

Edwards is considered one of the top NBA prospects to ever come out of the University of Georgia. In fact, Edwards is the highest selected played in UGA basketball history. NBA legend Dominique Wilkins was the previous record. Wilkins was picked third overall in the 1982 NBA Draft.

NBA Draft: Will Georgia’s Anthony Edwards go No. 1 to the Timberwolves?

Last night the Minnesota Timeberwolves received the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Will they take Anthony Edwards?

Thursday night the Minnesota Timberwolves were given the No. 1 pick of the 2020 NBA Draft during the annual NBA Draft Lottery, which is a random drawing of the top draft spots for the league’s upcoming draft.

The draft order is especially important to guys like Georgia basketball’s Anthony Edwards, a potential No. 1 pick.

DawgNation may have wanted to see the Atlanta Hawks in the No. 1 spot, but with Atlanta receiving the No. 6 pick – Edwards will most likely be off the board by the time the Hawks pick, barring a sizable trade.

Many mock drafts have Edwards and LaMelo Ball currently a top their big boards.

Melo took a more untraditional route to the draft than Edwards, electing to play in the AAU circuit in the States before going overseas for the past year to meet the NBA’s one-year out of high school draft requirement.

While Ball played well overseas, Edwards dominated the SEC as a freshman in 2019.

Edwards finished 2019 with 19.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game and was named the 2019 SEC Freshman of the Year – the first Bulldog to win the award.

We will have to wait until the October NBA Draft to see what the Timberwolves do with the No. 1 pick, but it may come down to who Minnesota thinks will be the best fit for their team in the long run.

Ball is a skilled point guard for sure, but with the Timberwolves adding star point guard D’Angelo Russel last season, they may elect to take Edwards at shooting guard, who is a more plug and play prospect with his explosiveness on both ends of the floor.

The NBA will be holding its annual Draft Lottery this Thursday, August 20 at 8:30 pm and we will be watching to find out which teams will have a shot at drafting Georgia basketball star Anthony Edwards as he tries to become UGA’s first-ever No. 1 NBA draft pick.

Edwards was a one-and-done for the Bulldogs, but his dominant play was something DawgNation will be able to look back on with pride.

He led the Bulldogs in 2019 with 19.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game and was named the 2019 SEC Freshman of the Year – the first Bulldog to win the award.

NBA lottery will impact Anthony Edwards’ career

Georgia Bulldogs standout basketball player Anthony Edwards’ NBA career will be swayed by the NBA’s Draft Lottery.

Georgia Bulldogs standout basketball player Anthony Edwards has a big week coming up. His NBA career and his next basketball home will be partially determined by Thursday’s NBA Draft Lottery.

Edwards is considered one of the top NBA prospects to ever come out of the University of Georgia. He’s projected to be a top five pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

The Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Cleveland Cavaliers all have a greater than ten percent chance of landing the number one overall pick.

Edwards could land in a variety of different situations. The Atlanta Hawks are Edwards’ hometown team and would be the preferred landing spot for many Georgia Bulldogs fans.

Contrarily, Edwards could end up with the Golden State Warriors, who are anticipated to return to being NBA title contenders next season. He’d have excellent mentors with the Warriors. Golden State will consider trading their top draft pick for a superstar, so that opens up even more possibilities for Edwards.

This NBA Draft doesn’t have a standout superstar like previous years. This combined with the endless possibilities of the NBA Draft Lottery mean that much of Anthony Edwards’ basketball career is hanging in the balance. Being in the right situation makes all the difference for stars in today’s NBA.

The 2020 NBA Draft takes place on Oct. 16.

Georgia forward Rayshaun Hammonds makes final decision on NBA Draft

Georgia F Rayshaun Hammonds had made his final decision on his senior year in Athens.

Georgia basketball’s star forward Rayshaun Hammonds announced his final NBA Draft decision on Saturday, via Twitter.

Hammonds will forgo his senior season to pursue the next chapter of his basketball career in the NBA.

Hammonds, who stands at 6-foot-9, 235 pounds, averaged 12.9 points and 7.4 rebounds a game as a junior last season, showing great improvement from his 6.7 and 4.9 as a freshman.  He shot 35% from three-point-range and 46% from the field.

Hammonds was the second-highest scorer on the team behind likely number one overall lottery draft pick Anthony Edwards. The Dawgs’ head coach Tom Crean, entering his third year with UGA, will have to somehow replace the loss of 32 points and 12.6 rebounds a game that Edwards and Hammonds produced last season.

“Rayshaun let me know the other night of his decision and he is following his heart and dreams,” Crean told the Atlanta Journal Constitution on Saturday.  “We will continue to support him in every possible way as he pursues his future and he will always be apart of the Georgia Basketball family and the University of Georgia community.”

Georgia’s 2019-20 season suddenly ended after a victory over Ole Miss in the first-round of the SEC Tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Crean will also be losing his seniors Tyree Crump, Jordan Harris and Donnell Gresham as well as the transfer of freshman Rodney Howard to Georgia Tech. The Dawgs will have to recruit well and rebuild around their only returning starters Sahvir Wheeler and Toumani Camara.

Recruiting will only get harder with the NBA G-League announcing its new pathway program for high school players to take, detouring the NCAA.  There has already been a ripple effect seen, with the nation’s top high school player Jalen Green entering the pathway program.

“We are in the midst of restructuring and remodeling,” said Crean on the matter of the Dawgs recruiting process. “It will be ongoing each year with the landscape of college basketball.”

 

Georgia basketball falls to Kentucky at home

The Kentucky Wildcats overcame a six point halftime deficit to defeat the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens by a score of 78-69 this Tuesday night.

Kentucky pulled away late Tuesday night to beat Tom Crean’s Georgia Bulldogs at home by a score of 78 – 69.

What may have seemed like an easy conference victory for the Wildcats, the final score doesn’t quite represent the type of game the Dawgs put up.

Georgia finished out the first half leading Kentucky by a score of 37 – 31, led by no other than freshman guard and future NBA lottery pick, Anthony Edwards.  Edwards, the Atlanta native finished the contest with a game high 23 points on 8/17 shooting as well as 3/9 from three-point range.  Joining Edwards in the double digit category was Jordan Harris, who finished the night with 10 points, helping to electrify the sellout crowd in Athens.  Edwards also tacked on 5 rebounds and 2 assists, but it wasn’t quite enough to beat John Calipari’s disciplined squad.

Kentucky featured a much more balanced offense, with four players scoring in double digits.  Kentucky spread the floor very nicely and were able to get good spacing for high quality shots.

Leading the Wildcat charge were freshman guard Tyrese Maxey and junior forward Nick Richards.  Maxey finished with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 blocks while Richards had 17 of his own, going along with 7 rebounds.

Kentucky struggled rebounding the ball in the first half as well as shooting free throws, but the Dawgs poor three-point shooting helped the Wildcats stay in the game.  Georgia led by as many as nine points in the first half but just couldn’t hang on late in the 2nd.

Immanuel Quickley hit a three-pointer with 8:09 left in the game to give Kentucky their first lead of the 2nd half.  The game remained close until Quickely hit another dagger three with only 3:59 remaining, giving Kentucky a 66 – 61 lead that eventually snowballed into a Wildcat victory and an agonizing defeat for the Bulldogs.

“I feel like we just didn’t play with toughness in the second half,” Edwards said postgame. “I played bad defense. We all played bad defense.”

Coming off a big upset victory over Memphis, this win would’ve given the Dawgs major brownie points in NCAA Tournament talks.  It was a hard fought game until the last minute and shows Georgia can hoop with anyone this season.
