Chiefs UDFA Spotlight: Texas S Anthony Cook

Our #Chiefs UDFA Spotlight Series continues with a versatile defensive back who has extensive special teams experience.

Cook was a high school All-American and three-time All-District selection at Lamar High School in Houston, Texas. He was a four-star cornerback recruit coming out, with offers from over two dozen teams across the SEC, Big 12 and Big 10. Ultimately, he chose to commit to the University of Texas after visiting the campus in Austin, along with trips to LSU and Ohio State.

He started his career at Texas playing special teams and cornerback before transitioning to a more versatile role in the secondary. He earned an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection in 2022 along with the Fred Jacoby Sportsmanship Award at the 2022 Alamo Bowl.

Steve Sarkisian provides an injury update prior to Kansas State matchup

Coach Sarkisian sounded optimistic about the health of defensive backs Anthony Cook and Ryan Watts.

Steve Sarkisian provided an injury update on two key members of the Texas secondary ahead of Saturday’s matchup at No. 13 Kansas State.

Coach Sarkisian sounded optimistic about the health of defensive backs Anthony Cook and Ryan Watts. Sarkisian mentioned “Both (Cook and Watts) look pretty good to me,” in his media availability on Thursday.

Having the secondary at full strength would provide a massive boost for the Longhorns going down the stretch. Cook left the Oklahoma State game early with an arm injury while Watts has been nursing an upper-body injury since the Iowa State game.

Cook is one of the more consistent players on the defense, totaling 46 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble on the season. Watts has proved to be a major addition from the transfer portal. He has started all eight games and picked up his first interception against Oklahoma State.

Oklahoma Sooners vs. Texas Longhorns: Stream, injury report, broadcast info for week 6

Trying to figure out where to find the Sooners game on Saturday? Here’s how to watch, stream or listen to Oklahoma vs. Texas in the Red River Showdown.

Oklahoma will face off with Texas on Saturday, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

It all comes down to this. The Red River Showdown provides an opportunity for the Oklahoma Sooners to right a few wrongs from the last couple of weeks against their arch-rivals, the Texas Longhorns.

When the two sides meet in the Cotton Bowl on Saturday, the records and the record books get thrown out the window. All that matters is what happens between the lines.

The biggest storyline facing the two teams is the health of their quarterbacks. Quinn Ewers is expected to make his return for Texas, while Dillon Gabriel is not expected to play this week after suffering a concussion in last week’s loss to TCU.

Regardless of who plays quarterback for the Sooners, the Oklahoma defense has to be better than it has been in recent weeks. Texas poses several difficult matchups with Bijan Robinson, Xavier Worthy, and Ja’Tavion Sanders. If Oklahoma can limit some big plays and force Texas to drive the field, that will give them a better chance to make stops. And that’s what this game will come down for the Sooners. Making stops on defense. If they can’t do that, it’ll be difficult for the offense to keep up.

Here’s when you should tune in to see the game:

  • Date: Oct 8, 2022
  • Time: 11:00 a.m. CT
  • TV Channel: ABC
  • Live Stream: fuboTV (watch here)
  • Listen: Sreaming on the Varsity App

Oklahoma vs. Texas: Behind Enemy Lines with Longhorns Wire

In a role reversal, the Sooners head into the Red River Showdown as the underdogs. CJ Mumme of Longhorns Wire shares his thoughts in this week’s Behind Enemy Lines.

Less than 24 hours from now, the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns will meet for the 118th time in the series. When the two sides lock up in the Cotton Bowl for the Red River Showdown both teams will be trying to end a losing streak.

Texas has lost four straight games in the Red River Showdown while Oklahoma has lost two-straight in the 2022 season,

Which streak will come to an end on Saturday? Here’s what our Ben Dackiw had to say about what the Sooners need to do to win while Bryant Crews provides his keys to the game.

To provide a bit more insight into this year’s Red River Showdown, we spoke with CJ Mumme of Longhorns Wire.

Four ways the Texas defense can improve in 2022

The Texas defense can improve in many ways this season.

Texas DB Anthony Cook ready to ‘silence critics’ during the 2022 season

The position change and another year in Pete Kwiatkowski’s system should bode well for a breakout year from Cook.

Texas’ defense received some fair criticism after an abysmal 2021 season.

Opposing offenses ran up and down the Longhorns defense throughout the entirety of the year, leading to a 5-7 start to the Steve Sarkisian era.

One player who could play a major role towards a bounce-back year for the defense is senior defensive back Anthony Cook.

247Sports named Cook among players who are “ready to silence the critics in 2022.

This former top-100 recruit for the Longhorns is a super senior and was moved to his stronger position this spring at the safety spot after playing corner last fall. Considering the Longhorns are expected to play a lot less zone coverages in 2022, Cook should be in spots to make plays — and has already shown a knack for doing so in camp. Cook managed an interception in the spring game and looked fluid at the back end. The Texas secondary has been a cause for concern in recent years, but Cook is one of several players hoping to change that perception this fall.

The position change and another year in Pete Kwiatkowski’s system should bode well for a breakout year from Cook. He was one of the few reliable playmakers on Texas’ defense in 2021.

Texas Football: Four storylines ahead of spring practices

Four storylines ahead of spring ball for the Longhorns.

With spring football in our presence, there are already players standing out and making some noise for Texas.

247Sports’ Chip Brown (exclusive content) broke down some of the biggest happenings when it comes to Texas football ahead of spring, such as who has stepped up as leaders, players standing out, and how position changes are going.

The Longhorns need major improvements at practically every position, and while they did bring in the No. 5 recruiting class, Steve Sarkisian would likely prefer for some veterans to step up so he is not forced to play a lot of inexperienced guys right away.

While the spring does allow for young players like Justice Finkley or Terrance Brooks to stand out and get an advantage over their classmates that didn’t enroll early, it also allows for veterans to use the fact they are in the system for a second consecutive year to their advantage as well.

Position battles may not be won in spring, but they do begin in the spring. What this means is that if someone has a strong spring, they will likely have an edge over the competition.

With spring ball scheduled to begin next week, here are some of the headlines around the team that stand out the most.
