Panthers part ways with veteran CB on Tuesday

The Panthers have waived CB Anthony Brown from IR.

The Carolina Panthers parted ways with a veteran defender on Tuesday.

According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 Houston, the team has waived cornerback Anthony Brown off injured reserve. The 31-year-old was shelved back on Aug. 19 due to a thumb injury.

Brown entered the league as a sixth-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in the 2016 draft. He’d spend his first seven NFL seasons there—amassing 324 combined tackles, 59 passes defensed, nine interceptions, five forced fumbles and 4.0 sacks over 94 games.

His seventh season saw stops with the Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets. Brown ended up appearing in two games for San Francisco, with each of his three snaps coming on special teams.

Looking for depth at the cornerback position throughout this past summer, Carolina signed Brown on Aug. 3. He played in the Panthers’ first two preseason contests, one against the New England Patriots and the other against the New York Jets.

Cardinals signing former Ravens QB to practice squad to replace Desmond Ridder

With Desmond Ridder signing with the Raiders, the Cardinals added former Ravens QB Anthony Brown to the practice squad.

The Arizona Cardinals have added a quarterback to their team. According to Arizona Sports 98.7 FM’s John Gambadoro, they are signing Anthony Brown to the practice squad.

Brown has bounced around in the NFL since entering the league in 2022 as an undrafted rookie out of Oregon and Boston College.

He began with the Baltimore Ravens, where he played in two games and even started one in 2022. He completed 44.9% of his passes for 302 yards and two interceptions.

Since then, he has spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders and Buffalo Bills.

He is 6-foot-1 and 222 pounds.

According to Cards Wire’s Howard Balzer, Brown was one of there quarterbacks the Cardinals brought in on Tuesday for tryouts.

With Brown and backup quarterback Clayton Tune as the two quarterbacks on the team behind starter Kyler Murray, the Cardinals lack experience should anything happen to Murray.

Between Tune and Brown, they have 80 total passing attempts in the NFL, no touchdown passes and four interceptions in 170 total snaps of play.

Pair of former Oregon Duck stars released by NFL teams on Monday

It was a tough Monday morning for a pair of former Oregon Ducks after the third week of the preseason.

Monday was a tough day for a pair of former Oregon Duck stars in the NFL. Quarterback Anthony Brown and safety Verone McKinley III were released by their respective teams.

Brown was released by the Las Vegas Raiders a week ago and signed by the Buffalo Bills. In the Bills’ loss to the Carolina Panthers over the weekend, Brown played well, completing 11-of-12 passes for 102 yards. Ultimately, though, the Bills are apparently more comfortable with Mitchell Trubisky and Ben DiNucci serving as the backups for Josh Allen.

McKinley suffered a similar fate for the Arizona Cardinals. He had a total of three tackles in Arizona’s game against the Denver Broncos over the weekend, giving him 11 tackles during the three-game preseason. The Cardinals decided to part ways with him, though.

We will see if either pro Duck can sign with a practice squad for the season.

Bills sign another quarterback: Anthony Brown

#Bills sign another quarterback: Anthony Brown:

With the ever-growing injury list the Buffalo Bills have endured throughout the 2024 NFL preseason, another new quarterback is in town.

The team announced the signing of Anthony Brown.

Brown, a third-year pro who was an UDFA out of Oregon following the 2022 NFL draft, has signed in Buffalo. In a corresponding move, wide receiver Lawrence Keys III was waived/injured:

Brown, 28, was waived by the Las Vegas Raiders last week. He heads to the Bills due to Mitchell Trubisky suffering a knee injury in the team’s 9-3 preseason win against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday. Trubisky is considered “week-to-week.”

Brown comes to Buffalo as no stranger to injury issues at his position in the NFL. The Baltimore Ravens signed him as an undrafted rookie and in his first season he eventually did see action.

NFL MVP Lamar Jackson went down with an injury that year, as did his backup Tyler Huntley. Baltimore had to call upon Brown to feature in two contests.

In those, he was 22 of 49 passes for 302 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. The first of those the Ravens held on for the win, while the other was a loss.

Brown heads to the Bills after the addition of Ben DiNucci just last week after quarterback Shane Buechele sustained a season-ending neck injury.

With the announcement that Buffalo will not play starting players against the Carolina Panthers in their preseason finale this upcoming weekend, DiNucci will start at quarterback for the Bills in that outing. Brown will likely see a chunk of playing time after DiNucci.

Bills Wire will continue to provide all roster updates throughout the 2024 season.

Raiders waive QB Anthony Brown following rough outing in preseason opener

A week ago Anthony Brown looked like he was in line for the Raiders number 3 QB job. Now he’s out.

It’s been a rough week for Anthony Brown. A week ago today, he was the team’s third string quarterback, which would suggest he had a practice squad spot with his name on it as the emergency quarterback. Now he’s out of a job.

Friday, the Raiders waived Brown, days after adding free agent QB Nathan Peterman.

Peterman is familiar with Luke Getsy’s system, having been with the Bears the past two seasons.

And while Peterman has done little to nothing to be considered an NFL QB in his career — including in four seasons with the Raiders from 2018-21 — Brown came out in the opener and looked completely lost.

Brown entered the game in the third quarter after the two quarterbacks battling for the Raiders starting job had both played a quarter of football.

Nothing looked smooth for Brown and he was unable to make corrections when things broke down. And they were breaking down.

The first six plays featured no completions, two sacks and a delay of game penalty.

In his four possessions, Brown had just one completion for 24 yards, five scrambles for 13 yards, was sacked four times, and fumbled a snap.

The Raiders are back to four quarterbacks on the roster — Aidan O’Connell, Gardner Minshew, Nathan Peterman, and Carter Bradley.

Busters for Raiders Preseason Week 1 vs Vikings

Raiders who didn’t make a great impression in their Preseason opener vs Vikings

There were many standout performances for the Raiders in their preseason opener in Minnesota. These are the wrong kind of standouts.

Busters

T Andrus Peat

The nice looking first drive was ended when Peat couldn’t keep Dallas Turner out of the backfield. First Turner laid a hard hit on O’Connell just after he released the ball. Then in third and goal from the three, Turner beat Peat again to sack O’Connell.

DT Byron Young

Young was abused on the first three plays he was in the game. He gave up a seven-yard run, then was blocked into the ground to give up the first down run, and then gave up a 16-yard run that only saved from being much worse because of a Tre’von Moehrig ankle tackle.

S Jaydon Grant

The defense bent but didn’t break on their first two drives. They broke on the third one. Grant was late getting over to give up a 48-yard touchdown run. The next drive, Grant gave up a 21-yard catch.

LB Luke Masterson

Grant was the last line of defense on that 48-yard TD run. Masterson was the first. That was his gap and he wasn’t there. The next drive, he came on the blitz on third and five but missed the sack to give up a nine-yard scramble.

RB Dylan Laube

Laube was twice needed to keep an oncoming rusher from getting to the QB, and both times failed to do so. He gave up two sacks on Brown. The second time, Laube was sent into a backward somersault. Laube had a total of eight yards rushing in the game and that came on a 13-yard run on third and 19. So, it was a give up play. On the other three runs, he had a total of -5 yards. His one return went for 16 yards and was stopped at the 19-yard-line.

QB Anthony Brown

From the moment he took the field, he looked out of his depth. He looked paralyzed, second guessing everything. Nothing looked smooth and he was unable to make corrections when things broke down. And they were breaking down. The first six plays featured no completions, two sacks and a delay of game penalty. In his four possessions, he had one completion for 24 yards, five scrambles for 13 yards, was sacked four times, and fumbled a snap.

S Trey Taylor

The Vikings scored touchdowns on their first two possessions of the third quarter. The first saw Taylor give up a 15-yard catch on third and nine. The second, Taylor was caught peeking in the backfield as his man ran by him for a wide open 33-yard touchdown.

G Corey Luciano

Luciano gave up the second sack on Brown when he didn’t switch on a stunt. Then he gave up the third sack in the same fashion.

C Ben Brown

After the Raiders went down 21-20 in the third quarter, they failed to answer because Brown was flagged for holding and then on third and 21, while Luciano was not switching up on the stunt, Brown was literally ran right by the guy, blocking no one.

TE Zach Gentry

Twice in the third quarter Gentry was tasked with run blocking and gave up the stuff. The first for no gain. The second for a loss of four on third and goal from the one.

Davante Adams preaches ‘realistic expectations’ as Raiders QB’s struggle in minicamp

Davante Adams preaches ‘realistic expectations’ as Raiders QB’s struggle in minicamp

You may have heard tell of the expectations of the Raiders defense. There is no question, they are riding high and after the way they played down the stretch last season, they have earned that swagger. By the same token, you may not have heard much about the offense. And there’s a reason for that. Mainly that there isn’t much to write home about. At least not in a positive way.

To be fair, the defense has a lot going for them right now which the offense simply does not have. They have a defensive head coach and pretty much the entire defensive staff back along with most of the defensive starters. Plus Christian Wilkins.

The offense has none of that. They have almost an entirely new offensive staff and a new quarterback competition going on between Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew.

This night-and-day difference has been on full display on the practice field through two minicamp practices.

Wednesday’s practice was particularly cringe-worthy for the offense. While Tuesday wasn’t great, it featured one or two nice throws from O’Connell and Minshew. So, you could be generous and say it was an up-and-down day. Wednesday there was nothing to be generous about.

The only good throws on the day were a couple deep passes by third teamer Anthony Brown. Meanwhile O’Connell’s passes were often wildly off target and Minshew’s passes lacked any zip and many times could be referred to as wounded ducks.

The results were expected. Several passes broken up, batted down, or simply out of reach of the receiver. Along with three interceptions on the day. O’Connell threw two of them – one to Jack Jones and the other to rookie MJ Devonshire. Then it was Jakorian Bennett who ended practice by picking off Minshew.

Basically the analysis of today was tantamount to W00F.

It’s important, however, to take this for what it’s worth. On one hand, you do expect better than was shown on the field over the past two days, especially when there’s no real threat from the defense on the pass rush in non-padded practices. On the other hand, this is a new offense and we are a long way from the start of the season.

Leave it to Raiders All Pro receiver Davante Adams to put it in perspective by taking a page out of Allen Iverson’s book.

“What is that called out there that we just did?” Adams asked, to which the answer was ‘practice’. “That’s it, right? This is the opportunity to get all that stuff ironed out. There’s going to be a lot of mistakes. There’s going to be mistakes made during the season, but this time of the year gives us the opportunity to get ahead of it and learn the system.”

Adams has not been seeing any reps on minicamp. He’s familiar with new OC Luke Getsy’s scheme from his time in Green Bay. So, right now, for the most part, he’s letting the rest of the receiving corps familiarize themselves with it. The benefit here for him is he doesn’t have to run himself ragged while the quarterbacks go through their growing pains.

For Adams, running routes and getting open only to have a ball sail over his head or fall short and get batted down, can be frustrating because of the standard he had for himself and wanting to actually feel a play work in practice before seeing it on game day. But frustration is on a rep-by-rep basis. On the whole, it’s way too early to be frustrated about the offensive struggles.

“You got to have realistic expectations at this point, but always keep your standard where it’s supposed to be,” Adams added.

“The frustration comes in midseason when we haven’t made the progress that we need. At this point you’re not a very mature or experienced football player if you’re getting frustrated in mandatory minicamp.”

While you’d like to see positive signs from the top two quarterbacks and the offense, right now all you can do is note it as not ideal, and hope this is not where they will be come August.

49ers roster moves: CB Anthony Brown released

The #49ers made some roster moves.

The 49ers on Tuesday announced a couple roster moves heading into their bye week.

San Francisco announced the release of cornerback Anthony Brown, as well as the release of practice squad CB Kendall Sheffield. To replace Sheffield, they added offensive lineman Jesse Davis to the practice squad.

Brown’s release could mean the return of CB Samuel Womack from IR is imminent. It might also just be the clearance of a roster spot to make room for DE Chase Young, who is set to join the club via trade with the Washington Commanders.

Davis will give the team more internal depth at OL while they deal with injuries to Trent Williams and Aaron Banks. He has starting experience at right guard and right tackle. The 2017 undrafted rookie has played in 94 games with 72 starts across six seasons.
