Ballers & Busters for Raiders Week 8 vs Saints

Plenty of blame to go around for the Raiders terrible performance in New Orleans Sunday

If you’re reading this, I admire your perseverance. It isn’t easy to relive games like this if you’re a fan. But it can be cathartic. And sometimes you just go searching for answers. I hope I can provide some for you from this completely lopsided 24-0 game.

Ballers

None

This should come as no surprise in a game such as this that there were no standout exceptions to all the terribleness. I came out of the live viewing expecting this and the more in-depth look confirmed that. Pretty much just bad top to bottom.

And, no, there aren’t even any Honorable Mentions.

Busters

HC Josh McDaniels, DC Patrick Graham

The offense went nowhere and the defense couldn’t seem to stop anything. It was 24-0 and really it wasn’t even that close. The Saints missed a chipshot field goal and spent most of the second half just running the clock.

The Raiders were down 7-0 heading into the second quarter. The first play of the quarter was third and one. And instead of going to Josh Jacobs, McDaniels tried to get cute and gave it to Davante Adams on a sweep. It was blown up for a loss.

Now fourth and two at their own 28, the Raiders lined up in punt formation. And McDaniels tried to get even cuter with a fake. The direct snap to reserve safety Matthias Farley was stopped for a loss and the Saints took over already in scoring range. They added a field goal to make those two bad calls by McDaniels worth three points and a 10-0 deficit.

After a Carr interception gave the Saints the ball in Raiders territory again, Graham’s defense quickly made it 17-0 when Alvin Kamara was left wide open over the middle for a 16-yard touchdown catch and run.

That was Kamara’s second TD of the game, but not his last. In fact, his third TD, he was also wide open over the middle, this time going 36 yards for the score. Graham’s defense wasn’t accounting for Kamara just as it was completely failing to contain Taysom Hill who got good yards time and time again on designed runs.

This team never got off the plane. How they could be this unprepared is mind-boggling. An earlier start due to the Eastern Time Zone doesn’t explain this level of ineptitude. Not sure anything does.

QB Derek Carr

Not one snap in New Orleans territory. Not one. His fewest yards ever thrown in a game (101) with at least ten completions or 15 attempts. His third-worst passer rating (50.3) of his career. His third fewest yards per attempt (3.88) of his career. His fourth-fewest completions (15) in a game in which he threw more than 25 passes (26).

The first drive ended with him throwing too high for a wide-open Mack Hollins. Second drive with him throwing short of Davante Adams. Fourth with him getting picked off.

The first drive of the third quarter ended with him getting sacked twice — the second time because he held onto the ball too long — and then giving up with a dump on third and 23. His next — and final — drive ended with him throwing a three-yard bubble screen to Davante Adams on second and 27. Then, of course, another give-up dump to call it a night.

CB Rock Ya-Sin, CB Anthony Averett

When Taysom Hill wasn’t running wild, Andy Dalton was picking apart the secondary. Andy. Dalton. And Ya-Sin and Averett were making it look easy.

The first TD drive featured Averett giving up a 30-yard catch. It was Averett again who gave up an eight-yard catch that put them at the 11-yard line and they scored on the next play.

Late in the first half, the Saints drove into scoring range with Ya-Sin giving up a 14-yard catch on third-and-nine and Averett giving up a 10-yard catch on third-and-four. They escaped it being a scoring drive because of a missed chip shot field goal.

They wouldn’t escape it to start the third quarter with Ya-Sin being called for pass interference on third-and-nine and the Saints going on to score their third touchdown.

The two of them would give up third-down conversion catches on the final Saints drive to allow them to bleed the clock down.

T Kolton Miller, G Alex Bars, TE Foster Moreau

Blocking was a real problem for the Raiders. No one was great. These three were especially bad.

It wasn’t a happy homecoming for LSU alum Moreau. He was getting pushed all over the place trying to block. The first play had him blocked into the gap to cause a run stuff. The second play he gave up a pressure that led to a tackle for loss and ultimately a three-and-out to begin the game.

The second drive saw Bars miss his block to give up a run stuff for a three-yard loss. The drive ended with Miller giving up a pressure that forced Carr to step up and throw on the run and the pass fell short and incomplete. Miller would end the next drive when he did a face plant on his block that got Davante Adams nailed for a loss on the sweep.

Moreau would give up another run stuff on the next possession, then Carr was picked off on third-and-two.

After falling down 24-0, Bars gave up a sack on Carr and he was sacked again on the next play while trying to make up the yards lost on the first one.

Carr’s final drive began with Miller being flagged for a false start. Then after Moreau made a first down catch, he gave up another hit on Carr that led to another tackle for loss. And Miller gave up a hit on Carr on the next play to set up third and 13. So much for all that settling in they were doing.

LB Denzel Perryman, LB Divine Deablo

It’s times like this that you realize just looking at tackle numbers doesn’t tell the whole story. If it did, it would look as if Deablo had a great game. After all, he did put up 14 tackles. But many of those tackles were downfield after the damage had been done. The same goes for Perryman and his eight tackles.

For proof of this, you need only look at the game Alvin Kamara had. Seven of his nine catches came with either Deablo or Perryman in coverage. Against Deablo he had four catches on four targets for 38 yards and a TD. Against Perryman he had three catches on three targets for 47 yards and a TD.

I don’t think much more needs to be said.

DE Chandler Jones, DT Bilal Nichols, DT Andrew Billings

Nearly the entire defensive line. Maxx Crosby did enough to stay off the list. The others did not.

Jones was routinely losing containment on the edge and watching Taysom Hill run by him for first downs and chunk plays. He let Hill get by him for good yards on each of the Saints’ three touchdown drives. And after an early pressure on Andy Dalton, he didn’t breathe on him the rest of the game.

Neither Jones nor Nichols nor Billings had a single tackle until after the Saints had taken their 24-0 lead in the third quarter. And none had a single stat other than that. Just utterly ineffective.

Just so you know they were actually on the field, the first TD of the game was set up by Nichols giving up a five-yard keeper on first and goal from the eight. And then Kamara scored from three yards out right through Billings’s position,

WR Davante Adams

I don’t blame him for much of what he’s going through. But he did have a drop, couldn’t seem to get open consistently, even when lined up against a rookie corner, and at one point was even flagged for an illegal shift. He was targeted five times with one catch on a bubble screen. In total, he touched the ball twice for a net of two yards.

Anthony Averett return from IR comes just in time for Raiders

Perfect timing for Raiders to get Anthony Averett back from IR and activated vs Texans

“It seems like one leaves and one comes back,” said Josh McDaniels this week, after Anthony Averett returned to practice this week.

The one who left was Nate Hobbs, who was placed on injured reserve with a broken hand. Hobbs is a big loss, but the blow is softened a bit by Averett’s return. Making it a timely return to be certain.

Returning to practice wasn’t a guarantee Averett would be ready to play, but the Raiders have officially activated him, which means he is likely to start against the Texans today.

The veteran cornerback won the starting job for the Raiders out of camp, leading to the trade of Trayvon Mullen to the Cardinals. Averett would make it through half of the season opener against the Chargers before leaving with an injury and heading to IR.

It was Amik Robertson who stepped up to fill Averett’s absence across from fellow starter Rock Ya-Sin. Had Averett not been ready to go for this game, it would’ve meant undrafted rookie Sam Webb stepping up along with Robertson.

Webb has been a pleasant surprise so far, but it’s best that the Raiders aren’t forced to thrust him into a starting role just yet. No time like the present for Averett to be back.

Raiders CB Anthony Averett, WR DJ Turner return to practice opening window for return from IR

Window open for return from IR for CB Anthony Averett and WR DJ Turner as both return to practice today

The season opener for the Raiders saw them stricken with a slew of injuries. Among them were starting cornerback Anthony Averett and reserve slot receiver DJ Turner. Both of whom were sent to injured reserve.

If a player in placed on injured reserve after the final 53-man roster cutdown, they are eligible to return after four weeks. That return window opens today and right on schedule, both players will take the practice field.

Keep in mind, this doesn’t necessarily mean they will play Sunday against the Texans. This opens a 21-day window for each player to be activated from injured reserve.

It’s also possible both are available right now, making their return today very good news.

Should Averett play this Sunday, his return would come at the perfect time, with fellow starting cornerback Nate Hobbs headed to IR with a broken hand.

Turner was showing himself to be a talented slot target and return specialist in the preseason, which is how he made the team. It will be good to see what he can bring to the offense as well as the special teams unit once he is ready to see game action again.

Former Alabama DB Anthony Averett placed on Raiders’ injured reserve

Former Alabama cornerback Anthony Averett has been placed on the Raiders’ injured reserve after he suffered a broken right thumb.

Former Alabama cornerback Anthony Averett suffered a broken right thumb in the Raiders’ Week 1 game against the Chargers. As a result, the Raiders decided to place Averett on injured reserve as a result. Levi Damien of Raiders Wire reported that Averett was assigned to injured reserve to make room for cornerback Javelin Guidry to sign with the team.

Averett spent four seasons playing cornerback at Alabama. During his senior season, he was named as a starter in Alabama’s secondary. The New Jersey native went on to record 48 tackles, eight pass breakups, and one interception. Following his senior season, he was drafted in the fourth round by the Baltimore Ravens.

During his four years with the Ravens, he recorded 101 tackles and three interceptions. After the 2021 season, he went on to sign with the Las Vegas Raiders. Now, he will be unable to see game action for “at least a month” as NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported via Twitter.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Averett’s professional career and other former Alabama NFL players.

Injuries pile up for Raiders in season opener vs Chargers

Raiders got considerably banged up, losing six players to injury in the opener, including four starters

This camp and preseason the Raiders have been very careful to try and keep their players healthy. Then they took the field to play and watched their guys one-by-one hobble off the field.

CB Anthony Averett left with a thumb injury and did not return. This injury may have been what prompted the team to sign CB Nickell Roby-Coleman Monday morning.

S Tre’Von Moehrig left with an ankle injury and did not return, Veteran Duron Harmon stepped in a played the rest of the way.

LB Denzel Perryman left with an ankle injury and didn’t return.

RB Brandon Bolden left with a hamstring injury and did not return.

WR DJ Turner left with an ankle injury.

Andre James suffered an apparent concussion on the final play for the Raiders and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital following the game.

All but Bolden and Turner are starters for the Raiders, so obviously their losses would be significant.

Ravens CB Anthony Averett finds new NFL home

Ravens cornerback Anthony Averett has found a new NFL home

The Baltimore Ravens didn’t see any of their 2022 free agents change teams over the first day of free agency. However, as the days have gone by there have been a few that have departed from the organization for new opportunities.

On Wednesday night, it was announced by cornerback Anthony Averett’s agency that he had signed a one-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders. The move comes after Averett posted a cryptic tweet on Twitter. The details of the contract were later released, with the cornerback set to make $4.5 million.

Raiders continue stocking up at cornerback with addition of Anthony Averett

Anthony Averett becomes the third CB Raiders added on day one of free agency

Day one of free agency has been a busy one for the Raiders. Several positions were addressed, but none more so than cornerback. The third cornerback of the day for Las Vegas is former Ravens CB Anthony Averett. This according to and Instagram post from his agency Athletes First.

It is a reported one-year, $4.5 million deal for Averett.

Averett is coming off a career year in Baltimore. The former fourth round pick picked off three passes and defended 11 passes in 13 starts.

One main issue for the former Alabama star has been injuries. He’s spent some time on injured reserve in his career and has never played a full season.

There was no question the Raiders were in need at the cornerback position coming into the day, with just Trayvon Mullen and Nate Hobbs as the only established corners on the roster. The team more than addressed the need at the position, with the signings of Averett, Darius Phillips, and acquiring Rock Ya-Sin in trade.

None of the additions are high-profile as none were full-time starters on their respective teams. The Raiders were connected to both JC Jackson and Stephon Gilmore over the past few days, but Jackson signed on with the Chargers and Gilmore has yet to sign with anyone.

Ravens CB Anthony Averett posts cryptic tweet as 2022 free agency marches on

Ravens cornerback Anthony Averett posted a cryptic tweet on Twitter as 2022 free agency continues on

The Baltimore Ravens are looking to improve their roster as 2022 free agency marches on. After the legal tampering period began on Monday at noon, the team was relatively quiet for the first 24 hours while other teams sprung into a signing frenzy. However, Baltimore reportedly added two quality free agents in safety Marcus Williams and offensive tackle Morgan Moses.

While the team is expected to sign both Williams and Moses as outside free agents, they haven’t brought back any of their own free agents at this point. On Tuesday, Ravens cornerback Anthony Averett posted a cryptic tweet on Twitter that consisted of two simple emojis.

Averett’s tweet is similar to fellow Baltimore secondary member DeShon Elliott, who posted a cryptic tweet himself on Monday. It has seemed unlikely that Averett returns to the Ravens, especially if his market drives his contract out of Baltimore’s price range.

Many speculate that Averett’s tweet signal the end of his time with the Ravens, but at this moment there have been no updates about his football future. He would represent a quality depth piece for any team, and has the potential to continue to grow into a star at the NFL level.

Ravens announce inactives for Week 18 matchup vs. Steelers

The Ravens announced their inactive players for their Week 18 game against the Steelers

The Baltimore Ravens are set to conclude their 2021 regular season against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 18. It should be a hard fought and physical game, just like the many matchups of years past between the two teams.

Before the game, Baltimore announced their inactive players for the contest. It was a long shot for Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson to start this week due to the fact that he’s only practiced one time since injuring his ankle during the game against the Cleveland Browns, and he once again headlines the inactives after being ruled out on Friday.

Wide receiver James Proche II is also inactive today for the second straight week.  It’s unfortunate for Proche because it would be nice to see what he can do and improve on the game he had against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Rookie outside linebacker Odafe Oweh is out for the second-straight week with a foot injury, It would’ve been nice for Oweh to sack Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in front of Terrell Suggs, who is being honored as the legend of the game for the Ravens. The rest of the inactives for Baltimore consist of guard Ben Powers, tight end Tony Poljan, defensive lineman Isaiah Mack and cornerback Anthony Averett.

Pittsburgh also announced their inactives for the contest.
