Andy Dalton armed with a ‘different perspective,’ wants to be back with Bengals next year

Andy Dalton is back as starter and wants more next year.

Let the Andy Dalton debate begin.

The Cincinnati Bengals picked up their first win of the season Sunday over the New York Jets right as Andy Dalton re-entered the picture at quarterback.

Cincinnati remains the favorite for the first pick in the 2020 NFL draft despite the win, which won’t quiet whispers about Joe Burrow coming to town.

But Dalton’s record-setting performance and the team actually winning has presumably created two sides of discussion.

For what it’s worth, Dalton said he “absolutely” wants to be back with the Bengals next year, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

“I have no idea what’s going to happen,” Dalton said. “I’m just going to do all I can to win the last four games.”

Dalton also told PFT his sitting out for three games after getting benched for a rookie gave him a “different perspective” and he still wants “to be the guy.”

We’ll see if the Bengals agree and avoid drafting someone like Burrow. But it’s safe to presume Dalton will keep playing with this giant chip on his shoulder the rest of the way.

Adam Gase, offensive line among Jets’ Studs & Duds in loss to Bengals

The Jets dropped their second game to a winless opponent this season and are now 4-8 with four games remaining after their 22-6 loss in Ohio

The Jets lost to a team that is 1-18 in its last 19 games on Sunday.

Adam Gase’s squad was a no show in Cincinnati, thinking they already had the game won when they arrived. Instead, New York was on the wrong side of NFL history for the second time this season.

The Jets gave the 0-7 Miami Dolphins their first win. No NFL team has ever given two teams who started 0-7 or worse their first wins of the season. New York became that team Sunday, handing Cincinnati its first win of the season and giving Zac Taylor the first win of his head coaching career.

For the Jets, it was two steps back in the wrong direction. Sam Darnold ended the game with a pronounced limp and the Jets offense didn’t sniff the red zone once.

Here are the best and worst players from the Jets’ sluggish and embarrassing Week 13 loss.

Dud: The Offensive Line

(David Kohl-USA TODAY Sports)

Pass protection has been an issue all season for the Jets, but it reared its ugly head in the 22-6 loss.

The Jets offensive line was guilty of six holds and several back-breaking penalties. The Jets offense had no chance with the Bengals defensive front wreaking havoc on the backfield on every play.

Offensive line play has been key to the Jets’ success all season, so it didn’t help that Kelvin Beachum and Tom Compton were penalty machines while Brandon Shell was a turnstile.

Instant Analysis: Jets return to their woeful ways in historic loss to Bengals

Adam Gase and the Jets went back to being dreadful on Sunday.

Adhering to the franchise’s longstanding tradition of disappointing its fans, the Jets came crashing down to Earth in Cincinnati on Sunday.

Riding the high of three straight wins, a matchup against the 0-11 Bengals gave New York a golden opportunity to extend its streak after weeks of encouraging play. Instead, the lifeless Jets lost on the road, 22-6. Andy Dalton feasted on an inexperienced secondary, Adam Gase’s offense sputtered and Gregg Williams’ defense ended its run of sturdy play.

The Jets looked as if they expected to walk all over the lowly Bengals. Instead, they lost their second game this season to a previously winless team.

Game Balls:

  • Let’s just skip this section this week…

Quick Thoughts:

  • If you’re going to be incompetent, make history while doing so. According to YES Network statistician James Smyth, the Jets became the first team in NFL history to give two teams that began the season 0-7 or worse their first wins of the season. The Bengals became the second team to pick up their first victory after the then-0-7 Dolphins beat New York in Miami, 26-18, in Week 9. If there was ever a record for the Jets to own, this is it.
  • The Jets defense had been clicking during the win streak, but a refreshed Dalton didn’t show any rust against Gang Green. With the Jets tallying just one sack and two QB hits against a bad offensive line, the quarterback picked on New York’s cornerbacks. New York’s pass-rushing and coverage had been strong in recent weeks, but that wasn’t the case in Cincinnati. Jamal Adams, meanwhile, had just one tackle.
  • As for Dalton’s counterpart, there wasn’t much Sam Darnold could do in this one. His offensive line crumbled like it did earlier in the season — to the point where Darnold got hurt — and his receivers dropped touchdowns and first downs. Darnold’s coach didn’t exactly have a gameplan that fit the opponent, either…
  • The Bengals came into this game with the worst run defense in the NFL. One would have thought Adam Gase would have made a note of that while he was skipping Thanksgiving dinner, but the Jets’ gameplan didn’t reflect the Bengals’ weakness one bit. New York ran by design just nine times in the first half and 17 times overall. Le’Veon Bell had just 10 carries. That’s inexplicable.
  • Penalties hurt the Jets repeatedly on Sunday, none more so than Kelvin Beachum’s holding call in the end zone that resulted in a safety. The Bengals squandered opportunities of their own, but it didn’t matter with New York giving away free yards and points.
  • This was a typical loss for a typical Jets team. It doesn’t matter the personnel in place — New York has always lost games like this, especially when trending in the right direction and building up excitement. There was hope that this particular group of people wouldn’t succumb to the Same Old Jets scenario that unfolded Sunday, but this franchise is the ultimate tease. Frankly, anyone who expected the Jets to win should have known better.

Andy Dalton surpasses Ken Anderson as Bengals all-time leader in TD passes

Andy Dalton surpassed Ken Anderson.

In his first start since becoming Cincinnati Bengals starter again, Andy Dalton surpassed Ken Anderson in franchise history with touchdown pass No. 198.

Dalton sailed a touchdown pass to Tyler Boyd in the first quarter of his team’s Week 13 game against the New York Jets.

This after Dalton had spent three weeks on the bench as rookie Ryan Finley got the nod as starter. A sparse crowd at Paul Brown Stadium rose for a standing ovation once the feat was announced.

Later in the day, Dalton also became the all-time leader in pass completions at 2,260 and counting.

The team’s official Twitter account captured the history-making throw, which poetically goes down as one of the best throws of Dalton’s season:

Jets vs. Bengals: Game info, where to watch, notes

Here’s everything you need to know for the Jets’ matchup with the Bengals.

The Jets will look to extend their winning streak to four games when they take on Cincinnati on Sunday.

New York is playing its best football of the season right now, putting up exactly 34 points in each of the last three games. Meanwhile, the defense is continuing what it has done all season long — being the No. 1 team against the run.

For this game, the Jets are going to need a balanced attack offensively. Cincinnati is bad against both the run and the pass, but especially the run. The Bengals are dead last in run defense, allowing 166.3 yards per game. That suits Le’Veon Bell, who has yet to have a breakout game, as well as the other running backs. Sam Darnold also needs to take advantage of the Bengals’ weak secondary.

Defensively, the Jets have to continue to stop the run and put Andy Dalton in long yardage situations. This is Dalton’s first game back since being benched a few weeks ago, so getting him to throw in tough situations will make him uncomfortable.

As for the Bengals, they are 0-11 on the season and it would be typical if their first win came against the Jets. They are clearly looking ahead to 2020, so the Jets have to make sure they don’t stoop down to the competition.

Jets vs. Bengals: A chance at 4 straight, Darryl Roberts’ return among pregame storylines

Jets Wire breaks down Gang Green’s Week 13 matchup with the Bengals by taking a look at four pregame storylines to keep an eye on.

It’s hard to believe the Jets will have a chance at their fourth win in a row against the Bengals on Sunday considering where the team was less than a month ago.

With three consecutive wins in its back pocket, New York has climbed out of the conference basement to nearly return to respectability. A win over Cincinnati in Week 13 would give the Jets a 5-7 record — a far cry from the 1-7 mark the team possessed four weeks ago.

What should Jets fans be aware of before Gang Green takes the field this weekend? Let’s take a look at some pregame storylines to keep an eye on.

Can the Jets make it 4 in a row?

AP Photo/Adam Hunger

The Jets are finally playing the way everyone expected them to entering 2019.

Albeit against underwhelming competition, New York has put together three consecutive dominant performances. The Jets have outscored opponents 102-47 over that span and have left no doubt with each of their last three victories.

New York has a real chance to make it four in a row against a winless Bengals squad. It would be very Jets to lose this game, but odds are that isn’t going to happen.

Did a former Bengals coach take a swipe at Andy Dalton?

Did Paul Alexander comment on Andy Dalton?

Paul Alexander is one of the more interesting elements of football twitter.

The former Cincinnati Bengals offensive line coach has all sorts of quality content up on his feed since moving away from coaching itself.

More recently, an interesting note about a quarterback came up. And while it seemingly refers to Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, it’s hard not to make the connection between Alexander, the Bengals and a starting quarterback by the name of Andy Dalton.

Keep in mind while the Chicago-Trubisky angle makes sense, the Bengals are off to the worst start in franchise history and a new head coach just went back on his decision and reappointed Dalton the starter.

The tweet in question:

Maybe this has nothing to do with Dalton. But this tweet followed closely:

What’s interesting here is Alexander saw plenty of bad quarterback play in Cincinnati. He arrived in 1994 as line coach and was trusted so much he was a top assistant to Marvin Lewis in 2002 as assistant head coach (he lasted half a season in Dallas after 23 years in Cincinnati).

But the Dalton connection is notable given the veteran’s downfall since his strong 2015 campaign, all the way to getting benched in favor of a rookie as soon as a new head coach arrived.

So far, it doesn’t seem like Zac Taylor has lost the locker room. The players are fighting. But Dalton was also a guy looking for a trade, which is impressive given his reputation and character.

With Dalton about to undergo his first start since getting the job back, this might be something to keep in mind.

Jets aren’t overlooking Andy Dalton’s Bengals

The Jets are ready for Andy Dalton in Week 13.

Andy Dalton might be 0-8 as a starter for the Cincinnati Bengals this year and lost his job to a rookie.

Don’t tell the New York Jets.

Jets head coach Adam Gase, captain of a 4-7 team that is surging on a three-game tear, doesn’t want his team to overlook the Bengals and Dalton.

“He’s a dangerous guy, period.” Gase said, according to SNY’s Corey Hersch. “That’s just what it is. It’s not always easy when you’re a quarterback who’s been in the same organization for a long time under the same head coach and all of a sudden everything changes. It’s not always as smooth as you want it to be.”

It’s reasonable to think the Jets might overlook the Bengals. The week after is a game against Miami, a divisional foe, then Baltimore. The Miami portion might sound funny — but the Jets lost to the Dolphins in Week 9.

Still, Dalton doesn’t seem like the most threatening player right now. He just got re-appointed as starter and won’t have A.J. Green. He’s struggled to complete 60 percent of his passes and throw more touchdowns than picks.

And yet, the Jets have made it a point to respect the veteran. Not only is it due diligence, Dalton himself might have something to prove with it seeming like he could be auditioning for a new team next year.

As expected, the quest to get win No. 1 won’t be simple.

Pressuring Andy Dalton among keys to Jets defense vs. Bengals

The Jets’ pass rush needs to continue playing well to keep the Bengals at bay.

Gregg Williams’ defense continues to impress and now they’ll have another chance to show off against the 0-11 Bengals and one of the worst scoring offenses in the league. Cincinnati ranks 31st in points with 14.3 and the Jets should feast on a team that also ranks top-five in giveaways (22) and sacks allowed (40).

However, the Jets can’t overlook the lowly Bengals. Remember the last time the Jets faced a winless football team? They gave up 26 points and lost an embarrassing game against the Dolphins. The Bengals are objectively worse offensively than the Dolphins, but they’re starting a well-rested veteran quarterback in Andy Dalton and feature a dual-threat running back in Joe Mixon.

Here are four keys to the Jets defense against the Bengals.

(Tim Ireland-AP)

Pressure Andy Dalton

The Bengals offense might see a slight rejuvenation with Andy Dalton back under center, so the Jets should pressure him early in order to take away the passing threat. Despite the Bengals’ winless record, Dalton actually ranks seventh in the NFL with 281.5 passing yards per game and the Bengals have scored 17 or more points in six of his eight starts this season. The Bengals’ line is still a sieve, and the Jets should have no trouble getting to Dalton – especially with the pass rush playing as well as it has the past few weeks.

Prediction

Jets 23, Bengals 17

Moneyline (?)

The JETS (-167) are expected to add to the misery of the Bengals (+135) and keep them with a goose egg in the win column. The way QB Sam Darnold and the offense have been operating lately, there’s no reason to believe they can’t top these winless Bengals.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on the moneyline returns a $6.00 profit with an N.Y. Jets victory.

Against the Spread (?)

The JETS (-3.5, +105) opened a little higher, but the public has been all over the Bengals (+3.5, -125). Perhaps they like the fact Dalton is back, perhaps they’re just going on percentages that the Bengals have to win sooner or later. Either way, take the Jets. It’s always pleasing to go against the public.

Over/Under (?)

Pass. The projected total of 41.5 (-115) is perfect for this game. If Darnold and the offense do what they have the past few weeks, this is an easy Over play. But when do the Jets ever do what they’re supposed to do and live up to their potential?
