Former Notre Dame players on NHL rosters to begin 2023-24 season

Know where to check out the former Irish who have made it to the highest level.

We understand that most of you come here for football, but Notre Dame has a devoted fan base for its hockey program. A lot of NHL players have come through the program, and many of them even have found great success at hockey’s highest level. And it’s unlikely any of them forget that they once donned the Gold and Blue.

For the 2023-24 NHL season, there are seven former Irish on rosters at the start. That’s three fewer than the start of each of the past two seasons. But be on the lookout for the 24 players with Notre Dame connections currently in the AHL or even the four in the ECHL. For now, here’s who you can watch in NHL uniforms:

The weather has gotten cooler, which means it soon will be cold. That means it’s time for the 2022-23 NHL season to begin. As usual, Notre Dame has plenty of representation in the league. Amazingly, not only do the Irish have the same number of former players from the beginning of last season (10), but the same players themselves.

Maybe it’s boring to some people to not see any new Irish players begin the season in the NHL, but 17 will start in the AHL, so you have that to possibly look forward to. Until then, here are the familiar 10 names:

Landon Slaggert U.S. alternate captain for world junior championships

Nice honor.

[autotag]Landon Slaggert[/autotag] has another chance to do this country proud. Before the forward came to Notre Dame, he was a member of the U.S. National Team Development Program. Since then, he has been a reliable selection for the world junior championships. Now, he gets to serve as alternate captain for the U.S. at this year’s event, which will begin Tuesday in Edmonton, Alberta.

Slaggert, a South Bend native and 2020 third-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks, won the gold with the U.S. in 2021 despite not recording a point in seven games, although he did have 12 penalty minutes. [autotag]Andrew Peeke[/autotag] previously was the last Irish player to medal at the event in 2018, during which he won a bronze.

In 65 games over two seasons with the Irish, Slaggert has scored 48 points, 20 of which have come on goals. His 26 points during the 2021-22 season, which included 12 goals, netted him an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection.

Notre Dame alumnus Andrew Peeke heading to world championships

Best of luck to the former Irish captain.

Former Notre Dame defenseman Andrew Peeke’s Columbus Blue Jackets didn’t close to qualifying for this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs. However, all is not lost for him as far as acquiring hardware in 2022. That’s because he will head to Finland and play for the U.S. in this year’s world championships. He last represented the U.S. in the 2018 world junior championships, during which he won a bronze medal.

Peeke just completed his first full season and third overall with the Blue Jackets. He played in all 82 games, and 13 of his 15 points came from assists.

Peeke will be the 17th Notre Dame alumnus to take part in the event. Most recently, Cal Petersen and Matt Hellickson won a bronze with the U.S. in Latvia in 2021.

Peeke played for the Irish from 2016 to 2019 and was their captain during his final year in South Bend. Over three seasons and 119 games, he scored 52 points, 12 of them coming on goals.

Think he’s listening to something familiar?

Former Notre Dame captain Andrew Peeke is enjoying his first full NHL season with the Columbus Blue Jackets. As he walked into Nationwide Arena on Sunday ahead of his team’s game against the Ottawa Senators, a photo was snapped of him. The photo shows him listening to music, so the Blue Jackets’ Twitter account asked everyone to guess what might be blasting in his ears at that moment. While we might never know the answer to that question, Notre Dame’s hockey account took the only guess it could:

Peeke listening to the Notre Dame Victory March ahead of games wouldn’t be unheard of. After all, professional athletes keeping themselves connected to their college days has been documented throughout history. Perhaps most famously, Michael Jordan wore his shorts from North Carolina underneath his uniform throughout his NBA career. Whatever he’s listening to, let’s hope it helps him play well.

Peeke has scored nine points and accumulated a team-high 26 penalty minutes in 38 games this season.

The puck has dropped on the 2021-22 NHL season, and the full 82-game schedule has returned. Besides the usual amount of hockey to look forward to once again, there also is a new team that has taken the ice. One player on that team played collegiate hockey at Notre Dame, as did nine other players who are starting the year on NHL rosters. That number could grow later this season with 15 other former Irish players starting play in the AHL, but for now, here are the 10 you can see at hockey’s top level at this moment:

As thrilling as skating for the Irish is, his greatest success this season has not come in South Bend. That’s come with Team USA, which won gold at this year’s World Junior Championship. The last Notre Dame player to medal in this event was Andrew Peeke, who helped the U.S. earn a bronze in 2018.

Slaggert, a South Bend native and recent Chicago Blackhawks draftee, did not score any points in seven games for the U.S., but he attained 12 penalty minutes. With the Irish, he has one goal and two assists through six games. That’s a far cry from the six goals apiece he scored in his last two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program. Perhaps his most recent experience will allow him to finish his freshman season in a big way.

Landon Slaggert could have something other than Notre Dame on his mind for most of December. The Irish’s freshman forward has been named to the U.S. roster for the camp in preparation for the World Junior Championship. The camp begins Dec. 6, and the roster will have 25 names for the tournament, which runs from Christmas Day to Jan. 5 in Edmonton, Alberta.

Slaggert, a South Bend native, recorded the first point of his collegiate career in the Irish’s 3-2 win over No. 3 Michigan on Friday. He and his brother, Graham, both had assists on Nate Clurman’s goal. He has played in all four of the Irish’s games played thus far.

Notre Dame has sent 22 players to the World Junior Championship previously. Last year, Spencer Stastney and Jake Pivonka became the most recent Irish players to take part. Irish medalists in this tournament over the years are Andrew Peeke, Anders Bjork, Mario Lucia, Kyle Palmieri, Kyle Lawson and Ben Simon.

With Notre Dame’s 2020-21 season going on as scheduled, the time has come to name the captains. Coach Jeff Jackson announced that decision Tuesday. Junior defenseman Nate Clurman will wear the coveted “C”. He’ll be joined by a trio of senior alternate captains: Matt Hellickson, Pierce Crawford and Colin Theisen.

Jackson said the following in explaining the decision to name these particular players captains, all of whom are doing so for the first time with the Irish:

“During these unusual times, our captains and leadership group will be challenged in many different ways. I am confident that our team has selected the right individuals to lead us through any adversity we may encounter. These young men are ready for the challenge and will hold our team accountable to our standards and our culture.”

Clurman, who was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in 2016, is the Irish’s second junior defenseman to be named captain in the past three seasons, joining Andrew Peeke in 2018-19. He earned Academic All-Big Ten honors last season and recorded nine of his 12 career assists. He also had a +8 rating, which ranked second on the Irish behind Cam Morrison.
