Commanders vs. Bears: Behind Enemy Lines with Bears Wire

We talk to Bears Wire managing editor Alyssa Barbieri to learn everything we can about the Bears.

The Washington Commanders [1-4] are in prime time for the first time in 2022 as they travel to Soldier Field to take on the Chicago Bears [2-3].

The Commanders enter Thursday night’s battle, having lost four games in a row. Meanwhile, Chicago has lost two games in a row, but there is a different vibe surrounding the Bears.

To learn all we could about the 2022 Chicago Bears, we spoke with Bears Wire managing editor Alyssa Barbieri this week ahead of Thursday’s game.

We go “Behind Enemy Lines” with Alyssa on the Bears.

Will Commanders continue recent success over Chicago?

Outside of the last meeting in 2019, Washington has dominated this series since 2004.

When Washington faces off against the Chicago Bears on Thursday Night Football, will the Commanders continue a Washington trend of success?

On Tuesday night, I wrote of when Washington and Chicago had last met. It was an ugly affair, over at halftime, as Washington fell to 0-3 (leading to Jay Gruden being fired at 0-5), falling to the Bears 31-15 on Monday Night Football for all of America to see the embarrassing performance.

NFL teams have some degree of changeover annually to their roster. Success and failure bring changes to the coaching staff as well. Thus, the fact that prior to the last meeting between the two NFL franchises, Washington actually won seven consecutive contests has literally no bearing on Thursday night’s game whatsoever.

Yet, the games are recorded in NFL official statistics and pulled out and broadcast from time to time in pregame shows, hoping to convince NFL fans that they actually possess some relevance.

For the sake of franchise history, yes, Washington actually defeated Chicago seven consecutive games in the last two decades.

5 Bears to watch in Week 6 game vs. Commanders

Five Chicago Bears to keep an eye on in Thursday night’s game against the Washington Commanders.

The Chicago Bears [2-3] are a lot like the Washington Commanders [1-4]. Both teams seem to be perpetually rebuilding, cycling through new regimes and always searching for a franchise quarterback.

Here we are in 2022, and the two legendary NFL franchises appear to be two of the worst teams in the NFL. Washington and Chicago will meet on Thursday from Soldier Field.

Both teams are offensively challenged, although in different ways. Washington features plenty of offensive weapons but questionable playcalling and a leaky offensive line, specifically the interior of the O-line.

Here are five Chicago players Washington fans should keep an eye on in Thursday night’s game.

Al Michaels had the worst time calling the Broncos-Seahawks dumpster fire of a football game so he just roasted it instead

Al Michaels was so done with the Colts and Broncos on TNF

The Broncos vs. Seahawks game was bad. Really, really bad. The Colts won 12-9, which seems like a really exciting baseball game score. But no, it’s a football game score, which shouldn’t happen. Ever.

Neither team managed to score a single touchdown despite actually having extra time to do it. The memes were actually the best thing we got from the game if we’re being honest. Maybe this cringy moment from Russell Wilson was pretty good, too?

I don’t know. Clearly, the point here is that the game was awful. Extremely awful. The good thing about it for us, though, is that as viewers we could check in and out when we wanted to.

The announcers? Boy, did they have a job to do. Kirk Herbstreit and Al Michaels were on the call for this game and, well, let’s just say it didn’t seem like a very enjoyable one.

Al Michaels, specifically, seemed completely fed up by the end of all this.

Richard Sherman had a fiery response to a Russell Wilson pick on a slant in the end zone

“I wish I had Marshawn up here.”

Given some of the past potential tension in their relationship, many thought that Richard Sherman would have even more to say about Russell Wilson on Thursday night. With Sherman working as a studio analyst for Amazon Prime’s broadcast of Wilson’s Broncos (-3.5) and their matchup with the Colts, the potential for Sherman to say something controversial about his former Seahawks teammate seemed high.

But, for the most part, amidst a football game of particularly awful proportions, we didn’t hear much from Sherman — at least in regards to Wilson’s play. That is until Wilson threw a late fourth-quarter pick, on a slant near the goal line, to Indianapolis’ Stephon Gilmore:

Hmm, while the stakes are certainly much lower, the general dynamic and set-up of that play — a Wilson interception on a late fourth-quarter slant — seems very familiar? (Note: The Colts would go on to win this game 12-9 in overtime.)

Oh, right, I remember this kind of famous Wilson play for the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX … that also involved the Patriots’ Malcolm Butler:

Ah, but see, that’s just a happy coincidence that a similar play happened for the Wilson Broncos.

Well, it didn’t be to such a happy coincidence for Sherman, who shared his thoughts on the play quite succinctly:

Sherman even recalled his initial heartbreaking reaction to that famous Super Bowl play:

On the post-game, Sherman would say he was “triggered” and seemed upset when he didn’t appreciate that Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett didn’t do a very specific thing with the football:

Uh, moving on. Sherman would follow this emotional sequence with a reference to the Denver defense playing well and that to win a Super Bowl this year, they would need to be “historic.”

Oh wait, is Sherman referring to the Butler play and Seattle and … oh that makes so much sense.

If Sherman has more things to say about Wilson, specifically, I don’t know that this necessarily means displeasure with his former quarterback. It could simply be that Sherman is still just really, really, really heartbroken over that loss. Though, I don’t think anyone outside of this pair’s thought process will take Sherman’s reaction that way. Not even close.
