Three Tigers receive All-SEC Team honors

Auburn Forwards Johni Broome and Jaylin Williams along with freshman Aden Holloway receive All-SEC honors.

Three Auburn Tigers earned spots on the SEC men’s basketball all-conference teams on Monday. Forwards [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] and [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] along with freshman [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag] received honors from the league.

Broome, who was in the running for SEC Player of the Year, earned a spot on the All-SEC First Team as well as the All-SEC Defensive Team after a spectacular junior season in which he averaged 16.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game.

Broome improved in all three statistical categories during his second season on the Plains. His 2.1 dimes per contest was a career-high.

Despite playing nearly 2 fewer minutes per fixture this season, Auburn’s leader produced nearly identical defensive statistics of 2.3 blocks and 0.9 steals as he did a year ago. Most notably, Broome was able to stay out of foul trouble by cutting his 3 fouls per game down to 2.4

Front-court mate Jaylin Williams found himself on the All-SEC Second Team after assembling the best season of his career in 2023-2024. The senior put up career-highs in points per game (12.9), field goal percentage (57.7%), and 3-point percentage (39.7).

The longest-tenured Tiger also enjoyed his best free throw percentage (82.5) since his freshmen season when he only appeared in 14 games.

Five-star freshmen Aden Holloway also received honors from the league as he was named to the All-SEC Freshmen Team after an up-and-down first season in front of the Jungle.

After scoring 18 points in the first game of the year against Baylor, Holloway struggled to find his stroke from beyond the 3-point arc but still managed to command [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag]’s offense well.

The 19-year-old from Charlotte finished the season averaging nearly 3 assists per game while committing less than a turnover per outing. Even with the shooting struggles, Holloway managed to finish fifth on the team with 7.8 points per game.

Auburn’s 3 selections to the All-SEC team are tied with Florida, Mississippi State, Tennessee and South Carolina for the second most selections in the conference.

Only Kentucky (4), had more players selected to All-SEC Teams.

Ike Irish and Bobby Peirce named to Preseason All-SEC Team

Two Tigers have received Preseason All-SEC honors.

Auburn catcher Ike Irish and outfielder Bobby Peirce received All-SEC Preseason honors from the conference on Thursday.

Irish, who was already named a Second Team All-American by the NCBWA earlier this week, received a nod on the Preseason All-SEC First Team while Pierce settled for the Second Team.

Auburn’s sophomore catcher is coming off one of the best freshmen campaigns in Auburn baseball history after mashing a freshmen record 24 doubles and leading the team with 86 hits and a .361 batting average.

Irish’s doubles mark was not only an Auburn freshmen record, but the most any Tiger hitter had hit in a season since 2005.

As for Pierce, the graduate student outfielder from Scottsdale, AZ enters 2024 coming off a career-best .343 batting average a season ago.

While he’s never shown much power on the Plains, Pierce showed an elite ability to get on base last season while playing above average defense in the outfield.

He’ll lead the team into 2024 as the longest-tenured Tiger on the roster, having played in 102 games over his four-year career.

The established Pierce and electric Irish begin their season on February 16 when Auburn hosts a weekend series against Western Kentucky.

Three Tigers named to All-SEC Freshmen Team

Auburn’s Alex McPherson, Keldric Faulk, and Connor Lew have been named to the All-SEC Freshmen team.

Three young Auburn Tigers have received All-SEC Honors.

Kicker [autotag]Alex McPherson[/autotag], edge rusher [autotag]Keldric Faulk[/autotag], offensive lineman [autotag]Connor Lew [/autotag] were all named to the All-SEC Freshmen team on Thursday.

McPherson was not only one of the best place-kickers in the country this season, but one of the best kickers period.

The younger brother of Bengals’ kicker Evan McPherson, Alex drilled every single one of his attempts this year, including 13-of-13 field goals and 39-of-39 extra points.

McPherson showed accuracy and power throughout his freshman campaign, connecting on a 53-yard try as well as 3 more attempts from 40-plus yards.

The College Football Network Freshman Kicker of the Year seems ready to continue Auburn’s recent run of strong kickers on the Plains.

Unlike McPherson, [autotag]Keldric Faulk[/autotag] and [autotag]Connor Lew[/autotag] weren’t major cogs in head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag]’s lineup until late in the season.

Lew started Auburn’s last five games, earning Freshmen of the week honors in his first start filling in for the injured [autotag]Avery Jones[/autotag] against Mississippi State.

The freshmen ran with the momentum, usurping Jones as the starting center for the final stretch of the season.

Lew helped a solid Tigers offensive line become great, specifically against Alabama in the Iron Bowl, when Auburn rushed for 244 yards against the SEC’s College Football Playoff representative.

Edge rusher [autotag]Keldric Faulk[/autotag] was also a late-bloomer for the Tigers in his first season on the plains.

The freshman started the final 7 games of the season for Auburn, collecting 12 of his 32 total tackles in the final three games of the season.

He played an important role in attempting to shut down Alabama quarterback [autotag]Jalen Milroe[/autotag] in the Iron Bowl, and did a decent job for the most part.

These three freshman will enjoy the honor before retunring to practice to prepare for the Music City Bowl against Maryland on December 30 in Nashville.

Jalen McLeod and Keionte Scott earn SEC Player of the Week honors

Jalen McLeod and Keionte Scott had performances to remember on Saturday, and were honored by the SEC.

Auburn linebacker [autotag]Jalen McLeod[/autotag] and safety [autotag]Keionte Scott[/autotag] have been named to the All-SEC team of the week after their performances in week 11.

McLeod takes home SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors after his 9 tackle, 3 sack performance in Auburn’s dominant win over Arkansas.

The junior also recorded another tackle for loss along with the 3 sacks and forced a fumble.

The 3 sack performance is not only the best individual showing from a Tiger defender all year, but also the highest single-game sack production for an Auburn Tiger since 2021.

McLeod has given the Auburn defense one of, if not the best linebacker duos in the country with himself and [autotag]Eugene Asante[/autotag]. He is peaking at the right time with two regular season games and a bowl game remaining on the schedule.

Safety and punt returner [autotag]Keionte Scott[/autotag] was also named to the All-SEC Team as the Special Teams Player of the Week.

After a few promising-looking punt returners against Vanderbilt, Scott finally broke one on Saturday for a 74-yard touchdown.

Scott added 9 more yards on returns on the day, finishing with 3 returns for 83 yards and the touchdown. The junior was asked about his thoughts on the return after the win.

“My main focus on punt return is being able to get my eyes down to scan the field and see where the hole is,” Scott said. “After receiving some great blocks from my teammates, I visualize being able to see the hole, hit the hole, stay vertical, and get into the end zone.”

Scott also played a large role on the defensive side of the ball, securing 3 total tackles in the contest.

Monday’s announcement marks the second week in a row two Auburn Tigers have been named to the All-SEC Team of the Week.

Auburn will hope to keep the good times rolling when they return to the Plains for senior day against New Mexico State on Saturday.

Auburn linemen Gunner Britton and Connor Lew named to SEC team of the week

Auburn utility lineman Gunner Britton and freshmen center Connor Lew have been named to the Week 9 All-SEC team after Auburn’s 27-13 win.

Auburn linemen [autotag]Gunner Britton[/autotag] and [autotag]Connor Lew[/autotag] have been named to the SEC team of the week after their strong performances in Auburn’s 27-13 win over Mississippi State.

Britton was named the SEC Co-Offensive Lineman of the Week, while center Conner Lew has been named the SEC Freshmen of the Week.

Both linemen earned the award after they helped Auburn’s offense eclipse 416 yards of total offense, 186 of which came on the ground. They also were able to keep a clean sheet for quarterback Payton Thorne in the sack category for the first time since week 1.

This is the second time this season Britton has won SEC team of the week honors, the first time being the aforementioned week 1 game.

Auburn’s best lineman didn’t allow a quarterback hurry or a sack in the contest, and repeatedly made good blocks in the run game.

As for Lew, he wins Freshmen of the Week honors in his first career start on the Plains, as he was forced into action after Avery Jones injured himself against Ole Miss.

Lew had a great game, allowing only one quarterback hurry and no sacks. It will be interesting to see if head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze [/autotag] opts to rotate him in at center and the guard positions moving forward.

College Sports Wire’s midseason All-SEC team

From Jayden Daniels to Brock Bowers, here are best players at each position in the SEC through the first half of the season.

The All-SEC First Team is one of the highest honors short of making an All-American team in the country.

In what is routinely the most competitive conference in college football, if you can be the best at your position in the SEC, you can establish yourself at the forefront for national awards and position yourself for increased hype around the NFL Draft. Players like Joe Burrow and Cam Newton have parlayed a single All-SEC First Team season into the No. 1 pick in the Draft.

There might not be quite as dominant a talent as either of those two this year, but here are the best players the SEC has to offer through Week 6 of the regular season.

Eugene Asante named SEC co-defensive Player of the Week

The Auburn linebacker has been named the SEC co-defensive player of the week after his 12 tackle performance at Cal on Saturday.

For the second week in a row, an Auburn Tiger has been named an All-SEC player of the week.

Linebacker [autotag]Eugene Asante [/autotag] was named SEC co-defensive player of the week on Monday after his 12 tackle, one sack performance in Auburn’s 14-10 road win over Cal in week two.

Asante’s 12 tackles were not only the most by an Auburn defender on Saturday, but they also tied for the most among all SEC defenders in week two.

Asante saw limited game action in his first year on the Plains in 2022 after transferring from North Carolina. The playing time was so limited that he even requested former head coach [autotag]Bryan Harsin[/autotag] to let him play on the scout team defense so he could get reps in.

https://x.com/jeff_shearer/status/1700779385467568390?s=20

In 2023, Asante has blossomed into a star, leading the Tigers in tackles in both games. His 18 total tackles on the season are currently tied for sixth in the conference.

The junior spoke about how he’s been able to be successful despite periodic playing time after Auburn’s win on Saturday.

“In the midst of chaos, there’s opportunity, we are our brother’s keeper,” Asante said. “Not being frustrated, not being disappointed but just going out there with a positive mindset and playing play after play.”

Asante elaborated further when talking to the media on Monday after winning the award, going into his experience losing his father and how he hopes to have made him proud.

“It’s surreal, to be honest with you. I’m grateful to God that I didn’t give up on myself. When I first got here, my dad passed away in February, I had to go through spring ball battling a whole lot of things and as a young man in this world, you need your father. It was a hard thing losing him because he was my best friend. So just to experience being the SEC Player of the Week, I’m just praying I made him proud.”

It looks as if head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] is going to turn Asante fully loose next week, as his week three depth chart lists Asante as the starting weak side linebacker ahead of the struggling [autotag]Cam Riley[/autotag].

Eugene Asante will look to continue his great stretch of play when Auburn hosts Samford on Saturday at 7:00 PM CT.

Five Tigers named to preseason All-SEC third team

Georgia and Alabama led the way with 14 selections, followed by LSU.

Five Auburn Tigers were selected to the preseason All-SEC third team on Tuesday.

Running back [autotag]Jarquez Hunter[/autotag], tight end [autotag]Luke Deal[/autotag], offensive guard [autotag]Kam Stutts[/autotag], cornerback [autotag]Nehemiah Pritchett[/autotag], and punter [autotag]Oscar Chapman[/autotag] received the honor after being selected by SEC coaches. No players on Auburn’s roster cracked the first or second team.

[autotag]Jarquez Hunter[/autotag] may be the name most familiar to Auburn fans. The junior tailback is coming off a strong season in 2022, totaling 899 all-purpose yards and nine touchdowns. He should be a focal point of [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag]’s offense in 2023, and it wouldn’t be a very big surprise to see him jump up to the second, or even first team by season’s end.

Senior tight end [autotag]Luke Deal[/autotag] has yet to see significant playing time during his Auburn career but brings leadership and experience to an Auburn locker room filled with new faces. Deal also has an opportunity to break out with [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag], who threw for 546 passing yards and four touchdowns to tight ends in 2022.

Guard [autotag]Kam Stutts[/autotag] has been locked in a positional competition all camp long. The sixth-year lineman was shaky in 2022 but will hope to have a starting role throughout the season on a revamped offensive line.

The lone Auburn defensive player to be selected by SEC coaches to the preseason All-Conference team, cornerback [autotag]Nehemiah Pritchett[/autotag] has been a key member of Auburn’s secondary for the past three seasons, totaling 89 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 25 PD, and two interceptions in that span.

Aussie punter [autotag]Oscar Chapman[/autotag] rounds out the Auburn selectees. The senior punter’s boot has been electric at times during his tenure on the plains. Chapman averaged 43.9 yards per punt last year, sending 12 of them over 50 yards.

Auburn’s five selections to the All-Conference team were among the lowest in the SEC. Georgia and Alabama led the way with 14 selections a piece, with LSU closely trailing behind with 11 players selected.

This pair of Gators got All-SEC basketball nods

Although his season was cut short, Florida’s Colin Castleton earned All-SEC honors along with freshman Riley Kugel on Monday.

The 2023 college basketball regular season has ended, and the coaches of the Southeastern Conference have voted on who they believe the top players in the league are. Florida had two players featured across the various All-SEC teams released on Monday.

Senior forward [autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag] made the All-SEC First Team and the All-SEC Defensive Team, and guard [autotag]Riley Kugel[/autotag] made the All-SEC Freshman Team. Castleton’s final year at the collegiate level was cut short on Feb. 15 against Ole Miss when he suffered a broken hand, but he accomplished a lot before the injury.

Castleton led the team in scoring (16.0 points per game) and rebounding (7.7 rebounds), but his defense was the most dominant part of his game. He finished the year ranked fourth in the country with 3.0 blocks per game and climbed to third all-time in program history with 194 rejections. His 2.49 blocks per game are a school record.

Kugel emerged relatively quickly as one of Florida’s best scoring options and he really took off in conference play. He scored in double figures in eight straight games to close the regular season, which is the longest double-figure scoring streak in SEC play by a UF freshman since [autotag]Bradley Beal[/autotag] did it in 2011-12, according to the UAA.

Although Florida is losing Castleton next season, it has a bright, young star in Kugel to build around.

Two Florida players named to the Freshman All-SEC team

Trevor Etienne and Shemar James have been named to the Freshman All-SEC team after their standout 2022 seasons.

Two breakthrough first-year players have been named to the Freshman All-SEC team for the 2022 season. Running back [autotag]Trevor Etienne[/autotag] and linebacker [autotag]Shemar James[/autotag] are being recognized just two days after being Honorable Mentions on the College Football News Freshman All-American team.

Trevor Etienne took the reigns as the Gators’ primary running back option later on in the season after splitting duties with [autotag]Montrell Johnson Jr[/autotag]. for most of the season. Paired with [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag]’s rushing ability, that three-headed monster was the backbone of Florida’s offense.

Etienne recorded 704 rushing yards this season, with 129 of those yards coming in a career-high performance against Florida State. He became the fourth true freshman in Florida football history to rush for at least 700 yards, joining [autotag]Emmitt Smith[/autotag], Tony Green and [autotag]Fred Taylor[/autotag].

Shemar James played in all twelve games for the Gators with three starts. He recorded 40 tackles this season, good for the second-most among true freshman SEC linebackers and sixth-most for the Gators. James’ best game came against Eastern Washington, where he recorded a career-high eight tackles. He was one of Billy Napier’s best-recruiting wins in his transition class, as the former five-star was considered the No. 3 prospect in Alabama and the No. 6 linebacker nationally, per 247Sports.

Top players like Richardson, [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag] and [autotag]Ventrell Miller[/autotag] have declared for the NFL draft and will not be playing against the Oregon State Beavers in the Las Vegas Bowl. Because of that and the over a dozen players that have entered the transfer portal, Etienne and James will play a big role on Dec. 17 starting at 2:30 p.m. EST and broadcast on ESPN.
