Five Auburn players make preseason Coaches All-SEC squad

The Tigers are well represented.

Few know their opponents better than SEC coaches, and the latest preseason Coaches All-SEC team saw quite a few of them give props to some Auburn Tigers football players.

Auburn saw five of its players make the All-SEC team in some capacity. Running back [autotag]Tank Bigsby[/autotag] and edge rusher [autotag]Derick Hall[/autotag] both made the first team, defensive tackle [autotag]Colby Wooden[/autotag] and punter [autotag]Oscar Chapman[/autotag] made the second team and longtime Tigers kicker [autotag]Anders Carlson[/autotag] finished out the group with a third team appearance.

Bigsby and Hall are no strangers to accolades — Bigsby has often been lauded as potentially one of the best running backs in the conference this year and Hall has landed on quite a few “way too early” mock drafts for the 2023 NFL Draft. Wooden is also expected to be a force to be reckoned with in the trenches, too, making Auburn’s defensive line one of its biggest strengths heading into the 2022 season.

On the special teams side, both Chapman and Carlson have been on the Plains for some time. Carlson comes into the year as a fifth-year senior while the Australian native Chapman enters his third year as a Tiger.

Coach [autotag]Bryan Harsin[/autotag] will hope that all these players live up to expectations as the beginning of the season against the Mercer Bears on Sept. 3 draws nearer and nearer.

Evaluating LSU’s wide receiver room in 2022 and beyond

We take a look at how LSU stacks up at wide receiver in 2022 and the years to come

When Brian Kelly first took the job at LSU, perhaps his most daunting task was to rebuild the roster.

That’s what this is, after all, a rebuild. Rebuilding takes time. When Kelly took this job, it was clear it would take some time to fill this roster.

In a short time, Kelly and the staff have done a good job at steering the ship in the right direction. LSU has been active in the portal and LSU has done what it can do on the recruiting trail.

With all the movement that has gone on, it was easy to miss some things. The roster looks wildly different now than it did in November.

There’s now some time to take a look at how the roster is positioned heading into 2022 and the future.

LSU looks good at some positions such as defensive line and quarterback. There are position groups that are trending up, such as linebackers and safety. Some question marks remain too, like cornerback and offensive line.

The pandemic combined with new transfer rules has presented challenges to managing a roster over the last couple of years. These are things coaches plan for years in advance. Recent turbulence in the sport has forced coaches to adjust.

Now that we’ve done quarterback and running back, today we will take a look at the wide receiver position.

Three LSU Tigers Players Named To All-SEC Teams

The All-SEC teams were announced on Tuesday, and the LSU Tigers had three players named to the team. Linebacker Damone Clark was named to the first team, while offensive lineman Ed Ingram and kicker Cade York earned second-team honors.

Clark came into the season with high expectations and delivered. The Linebacker led the country in tackles with 135. Also, Clark had 15.5 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, one interception, and two forced fumbles.

Clark was a finalist for the Butkus Award but lost out to Nakobe Dean of Georgia. However, the senior improved on his coverage and tackling, and it showed in his stats for the 2021 season. Clark will showcase his talents in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.

In his fifth year as a Tiger, Ingram was a critical part of the LSU offensive line. Ingram started all 11 games for LSU and was an outstanding run blocker. Ingram was a leader on and off the field for the Tigers and will play in the Senior Bowl along with Clark.

Coming into the season, York was considered one of the best placekickers in the country. York made 15-of-18 kicks and 7-of-8 from 50 yards or more. But York did not make the final list for the Lou Groza kicking award.

PFF’s All-SEC team lists seven LSU Tigers, omits Damone Clark

A total of seven LSU Tigers on the PFF All-SEC team, but one glaring ommission.

Pro Football Focus has released their All-SEC team with seven LSU Tigers making the list. Only one made the first team, but not the player expected. One of the biggest omissions on this list is the conference’s leading tackler and Butkus Award finalist Damone Clark.

Clark has tallied 137 total tackles this year, an average of 11.42 tackles per game. He ranks No. 2 in the nation, the next closest SEC player was Arkansas’ Bumper Pool with 120 tackles. Pool was listed on the third team. It isn’t just the tackles for Clark as he was all over the field for LSU. He accumulated 15 TFL’s, five sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and one interception. His two sacks against Texas A&M sealed the win.

The breakdown of LSU Tigers on the three teams and honorable mention list:

Defensive Lineman: Neil Farrell Jr

Farrell finished with 25 tackles, 9.5 TFLs, and two sacks. He also had two passes defended on the year.

Next, a pair of second-teamers

All-SEC Team: Seven Tigers named to conference team by coaches

A total of seven LSU Tigers were named to the All-SEC team by the coaches.

Shortly before the SEC media days, the conference announced the All-SEC team as voted on by the media. On Tuesday, LSU announced that seven members of the football program were named to the coaches edition.

The team selections were led by two members who have made just about every preseason All-American team. Derek Stingley Jr and Cade York were the only first-team selections for LSU. That comes as no real surprise as they have been the best at their positions for the last two seasons in Baton Rouge.

A look at the full All-SEC team, from a LSU perspective:

These four Gators are on the preseason Coaches All-SEC team

Kaiir Elam continues to collect preseason accolades but who joined him on the preseason Coaches All-SEC Team?

Four Florida Gators were named to the preseason Coaches All-SEC Team on Tuesday. Defensive end Zachary Carter and cornerback Kaiir Elam were selected to the First Team, linebacker Ventrell Miller made the Second Team and receiver Jacob Copeland landed on the Third Team.

Elam’s selection comes as no surprise and just a day after he was named a preseason AP All-American. It’s the latest preseason honor for Carter as well after being named on the media’s preseason All-SEC First Team and the Wuerffel Trophy watchlist. Miller, last year’s team leader in tackles (88), and Copeland earned the same spots on the media’s preseason team.

The defenders named on the list are the anchors of their respective units and will need to have strong seasons if the Gators are to compete for an SEC Championship again. Copeland, a redshirt junior, is looking to break out as the main guy for Emory Jones.

The complete preseason Coaches All-SEC Team can be found on the next page.

Athlon Sports names 8 Tigers to post-spring All-SEC team

Eight Auburn Tigers led by linebacker Zakoby McClain made the post-spring All-SEC teams by Athlon Sports.

In the past, we had to wait almost all summer long to first see the predictions for the Athlon Sports and Lindy’s of the world when the magazines hit the book shelves.

Not anymore as the Internet has changed that for some time now. Athlon Sports is on top of the conferences after spring practice concluded by releasing post-spring all conference teams including the SEC in which eight Auburn Tigers have made the list.

Here’s a look at each one:

Sharife Cooper named to SEC All-Freshman Team

Auburn point guard Sharife Cooper has been named to the SEC All-Freshman Team despite playing in just 12 games.

Auburn fans only got to see Sharife Cooper play in 12 games during his freshman season, but he was certainly impressive over that span.

On Tuesday, Cooper was named to the SEC All-Freshman team, the only Tiger player to earn a postseason honor this season.

From Auburn’s press release:

Cooper is the 17th Tiger freshman to be named to the annual team and the third under head coach Bruce Pearl, joining Isaac Okoro (2020) and Mustapha Heron (2017).

In 12 games, the Powder Springs, Ga. native averaged a team-best 20.2 points and 8.1 assists per game in addition to his 4.3 rebounds per tilt.

Cooper scored or assisted on 471 of Auburn’s 996 points (47.2 percent) when he was in the lineup.

Trask snubbed by AP, named to All-SEC Second Team alongside 3 other Gators

Trask is on the All-SEC Second Team joined by three of his teammates, ATH Kadarius Toney, DE Brenton Cox Jr. and CB Kaiir Elam.

When the SEC coaches elected to name Alabama’s Mac Jones to the All-SEC First Team, the decision was a bit puzzling. After all, UF’s Kyle Trask had more yards, passing touchdowns and average yards per game. But when the AP released its All-SEC First and Second Team lists, it was clear that the coaches made no mistake.

Once again, Trask was relegated to the All-SEC Second Team. He is joined there by three of his teammates, receiver Kadarius Toney, defensive end Brenton Cox Jr. and cornerback Kaiir Elam (who was a First Team selection by the coaches).

Jones being honored by the media doesn’t bode well for Trask’s Heisman chances, which rest with the decisions of many of them.

Toney was one of the most electric players in the country and the Gators’ leading receiver. He’s closing in on 1,000 receiving yards, and he has 10 touchdowns through the air.

Cox Jr., meanwhile, wasn’t quite as dominant as Florida hoped the former five-star recruit Georgia transfer would be. But he was a solid contributor on a defense that struggled to find them. He had 3.5 sacks in the first 11 games, and he has 42 total tackles on the season. With two more years of eligibility, he has the opportunity to be a major part of UF’s defense in the coming years.

Elam, on the other hand, may not be around for much longer. The true sophomore has to return next season, but he will likely find himself an early-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He was a bright spot on a UF secondary that had few this season, with 39 tackles, two interceptions and 11 passes deflected to this point.

Lady Gators guard Lavender Briggs earns Second Team All-SEC honors

SEC women’s basketball coaches have picked their preseason favorites as well as First and Second Team All-SEC including UF’s Lavender Briggs

SEC women’s basketball coaches have picked South Carolina as the favorite to win the 2021 SEC Championship.

Kentucky’s Rhyne Howard was voted as the SEC Women’s Basketball Preseason Player of the Year. South Carolina’s Aliyah Boston also received votes.

Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team or player, and ties were not broken in any way.
