Cory Bonini’s 2021 NFL mock draft 2.0

Cory Bonini has updated his 2021 NFL mock draft to reflect the recently traded picks and free agency.

Here’s my second 2021 NFL mock draft. I tend not to project trades, and this year is no different — at least for now. The draft process is quite different this year, most notably without a scouting combine, so collegiate pro days will be more valuable than in recent years. Also important, in-game data retrieved from chips embedded into equipment, which is something we’ll see teams utilize more frequently and rely less on watching how a player performs without pads.

Anyway, we’ll be unveiling more mock drafts than ever before this year, so be sure to check back with our 2021 NFL Draft Central page to keep track of all of our offerings.

2021 NFL Mock Draft notables

  • The New York Jets’ No. 2 pick … I previously mocked WR Ja’Marr Chase here, because I wasn’t convinced the Jets were done with Sam Darnold. It was looking to be the case right up until the San Francisco 49ers traded the farm to move into the No. 3 spot, which convinced me the Jets didn’t want to get out of the second slot for fear of losing their new franchise quarterback.
  • San Francisco could go with Trey Lance or Justin Fields … my lean is Fields, because I see more upside there to fit what Kyle Shanahan wants to do on offense, and there’s a little greater trust factor coming from a powerhouse school.
  • Back to Chase for a moment … Do the Atlanta Falcons need another wide receiver? No, probably not, but Chase’s potential is too great to pass with Julio Jones in the twilight (and probably final year) of his career with the Falcons. Furthermore, the franchise is locked into Matt Ryan for at least 2021 and probably 2022, barring a contract restructuring to spread the dead cap hits. If the team feels it can upgrade elsewhere just enough to be competitive, Chase could be a dynamic pick.

[lawrence-related id=457182]

  • Denver is in a strange position following the two draft trades. The Broncos can stick with Drew Lock one more year and see if he develops once he has more cohesion around him and what should be a traditional offseason to develop his promising skills. He lost his top receiver last year, and the right tackle Ja’Wuan James opted out. James, 28, is expected to return, but the team has an out after this year if he’s not playing well. This team could go QB, LB, CB, OT … it’s rather wide open.
  • Several situations that appear to be obvious directions for teams to turn don’t necessarily compute for me. I’m not saying Chicago, New Orleans, New England and/or Washington won’t add a quarterback in Round 1, but I’m not seeing the scenarios playing out favorably.

15 prospects to watch after Eagles trade down to No. 12 overall in the NFL draft

The Eagles traded the No. 6 overall pick to the Dolphins for the No. 12 overall pick. Here are 15 players to watch.

The NFL draft is a month away and as the Eagles prepare for a rebuild under new head coach Nick Sirianni, the franchise will undergo a facelift that could happen fast with 22-23 picks over the next two years.

The Eagles are currently slated to pick No. 12 overall in April’s draft after trading down from No. 6 Friday, and with players like Ja’Marr Chase and Kyle Pitts unlikely to be available, Philadelphia is choosing to stockpile picks.

Howie Roseman has to hit big in the first round, so here are 15 prospects to watch.

Falcons 2021 potential draft pick profile: OL Alijah Vera-Tucker

One of the Atlanta Falcons perfect trade down targets would be Alijah Vera-Tucker, an offensive lineman from Southern California.

One of the Atlanta Falcons perfect trade down targets would be Alijah Vera-Tucker, an offensive lineman from Southern California. He played left tackle, left guard and right guard for the Trojans and has shown that he can play any of them at a high level through the years. Teams will love his versatility, especially Atlanta.

Highlights: Vs. Notre Dame

Strengths

Alijah Vera-Tucker might be the best fit for any zone scheme as an offensive guard. He’s got the pure pass-blocking technique, power, balance, anchor and kick step to be a great interior player for a zone-blocking team. His pass protection is elite at left guard. Teams will love how he can stand up to anyone’s raw power and how he fights off quickness.

His run blocking is also excellent, and it suits a zone game well. He has the requisite power to move any defensive tackle, but he does better with a lateral step first. His mobility is amazing both laterally and when attacking the second level. Teams will fall in love with his level of athleticism after seeing the results of his pro day.

After playing both guard spots and left tackle at the college level, he’s shown that he has the versatility to play any of those spots at the next level. That being said, he’s a better guard than tackle. He also has excellent football instincts when it comes to stunts and duo blocks. His ability to get to the second level and head off the linebacker’s angles might as well be coaching film.

Weaknesses

The biggest issues that Vera-Tucker has in his game comes from his lack of flexibility on the edge of the line. He also doesn’t have the length to play left or right tackle in the NFL full-time. In a pinch, he’d be fine, but that’s not his strength and not where he’d be one of the best five linemen on a roster. His hand technique also needs a lot of work, but he should be able to learn this.

Leadership

Vera-Tucker is one of the nastiest players in the draft. However, he’s also known for being a true leader off the field  and was one of the captains for the Trojans. He’s an extremely hard worker both on and off the field. The Falcons would love another offensive lineman that could lead the unit after losing the long-time leader of the unit in Alex Mack.

Overview

NFL Stylistic Comparison/Best Case Scenario: Zack Martin

There’s a lot of comparisons popping up for him, but they all seem to be left tackles. The best position for him long term is probably at left guard. Zack Martin then springs to mind. The long-time left guard from Notre Dame fits as a perfect comp for him both in size, strength, speed comparison and overall stylistic play comparison.

How Vera-Tucker fits into the Falcons’ plans

If the Falcons want to get Vera-Tucker, they would be smart to trade down to around 11 or 12 and select him there. They could potentially pick up a future first and a 2021 second with a move down in the draft. A trade like that could set the Falcons up well for the future while also giving them the proper pieces to compete right now.

Bengals worked with Alijah Vera-Tucker at USC pro day ahead of NFL draft

The Cincinnati Bengals have a close eye on a key OL prospect ahead of the 2021 NFL draft.

[mm-video type=video id=01f1jh5wgcnqgaxnpk playlist_id=01eqbw0bft20de1r4d player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f1jh5wgcnqgaxnpk/01f1jh5wgcnqgaxnpk-04f4d3cf7f0a4168b43ea421b7b766c8.jpg]

The Cincinnati Bengals aren’t missing out on all of the big pro days ahead of the 2021 NFL draft.

After sending key names to Florida State and Alabama pro days, Bengals offensive line coach Frank Pollack personally oversaw the workout of Alijah Vera-Tucker at USC’s pro day on Wednesday.

Vera-Tucker was an interesting name to keep an eye on even if the Bengals weren’t there because he had starting experience at guard before moving to left tackle and played at a high level.

Pollack, of course, just returned to the Bengals after the team parted ways with Jim Turner and instantly got an upgrade with Riley Reiff in free agency. The need at guard is still very apparent and no further signing on the market right now would stop the team from taking a top prospect in the first or second rounds.

Is that Vera-Tucker? Hard to say, though the interest from Pollack himself is pretty telling.

What signing OL Oday Aboushi means for Chargers

The revamp of the Chargers offensive line is going very well.

The Chargers signed guard Oday Aboushi to a one-year deal on Saturday/

Los Angeles acquired center Corey Linsley and guard Matt Feiler earlier this week, but the renovation of the offensive line didn’t stop there.

Aboushi, 29, is a player who’s capable of starting at the other guard spot opposite of Feiler.

Aboushi thrived as the Lions’ right guard last season, which could indicate that the team sees him in that spot while Feiler plays on the left side.

At the moment, four starting spots are filled: left guard, center, right guard and right tackle. Now, the Chargers are in a position where they have to find a starting left tackle.

Trey Pipkins is still on the roster and while he was drafted to eventually become the starter, he hasn’t proven himself in that role.

Therefore, Los Angeles is in a prime position to land either Christian Darrisaw, Rashawn Slater or Alijah Vera-Tucker at No. 13.

Assuming L.A. drafts one of the three, this is how the starting offensive line would look like going into the regular season:

LT Slater/Vera-Tucker/Darrisaw

LG Feiler

C Linsley

RG Aboushi

RT Bryan Bulaga

The Chargers lost Dan Feeney and Cole Toner to the Jets and Texans, respectively. Other starters from last season, Sam Tevi, Forrest Lamp and Ryan Groy remain free agents. The team could benefit to re-sign one for the sake of depth.

I expect Los Angeles to use two of their nine draft picks, outside of the first-round, for depth and upside to start down the road. This year’s draft class is loaded with players who possess that, both at tackle and guard in the mid- late rounds.

The bottom line is that general manager Tom Telesco made the point that the offensive line needed to improve this offseason and he’s done a fine job of sticking to his word.

Breaking down the Chargers’ options after release of Trai Turner

Chargers Wire’s Gavino Borquez breaks down how the Los Angeles Chargers can fill the hole at right guard.

The Chargers popped up in the news on Friday after releasing their starting right guard from last season, Trai Turner. The release wasn’t all that surprising considering Turner was injured and underwhelming with his play in 2020.

His departure leaves another hole in the offensive line that Los Angeles will have to fill this offseason. With that being said, let’s take a look at a couple of options and potential suitors.

Cardinals land O-lineman in mock draft projecting Russell Wilson, Deshaun Watson trades

In this new mock draft affected by trades for Deshaun Watson and Russell Wilson, the Arizona Cardinals USC OL Alijah Vera-Tucker.

We have a new mock draft from Draft Wire managing editor Luke Easterling. In this one, he projects what the first round of the 2021 draft could look like after trades for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson have gone down.

Those potential trades would not affect the Arizona Cardinals with the 16th pick in the draft.

Who do the Cardinals get at No. 16?

Easterling has them selecting USC offensive lineman Alihah Vera-Tucker.

The Cards have one of the NFL’s most dynamic quarterbacks in Kyler Murray, but just because he can run for his life and make plays outside the pocket doesn’t mean he should have to do it all of the time. Arizona should use this pick on the best offensive lineman available, whether at tackle or along the interior, and Vera-Tucker is the clear choice in this scenario.

An offensive lineman would make sense. Vera-Tucker is versatile enough to play tackle but he is projected to be a potentially great guard.

Cornerback Jaycee Horn is still on the board in this mock draft. He probably will be in play, considering the great need the Cardinals have at the position this offseason.

Sitting with the 16th pick, an offensive lineman, a pass rusher, receiver or cornerback are the likely target.

Vera-Tucker makes a lot of sense. He might not start as a rookie, as offensive line coach Sean Kugler prefers to avoid that, but as the Cardinals build their team around quarterback Kyler Murray, giving him protection up front is a good plan.
