Alex Bregman’s reported openness to position change is huge for his MLB free agency

The third baseman could move positions, which could cause a bidding war.

Alex Bregman is one of the more intriguing names on the MLB free agency market, but if you’ve got third base sewn up, you don’t necessarily need a two-time All-Star who consistently drives in runs.

But what if you needed a second baseman who could do that? And that’s where the latest report makes a difference.

Per USA TODAY Sports’ Bob Nightengale: “Bregman has spent his entire career with the Houston Astros, has received interest from several teams asking whether he’d be willing to move to second base, which he’s amenable to doing.”

That might drive up his value to teams clamoring to outbid the Houston Astros, who would most certainly want to bring back one of the cornerstones of the franchise. If a team like, say, the New York Yankees don’t re-sign Juan Soto, they can hand Bregman a chunk of change to play second.

Smart.

Former LSU baseball stars Paul Skenes and Alex Bregman face off in MLB for first time

Two of the greatest baseball players to ever don purple and gold finally got to face off against each other for the first time.

Two of the greatest baseball players to ever don purple and gold finally got to face off against each other. Those two players are [autotag]Alex Bregman[/autotag] and [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag].

Skenes and the Pirates strolled into Minute Maid Park with a win on their mind as they sent their ace to face a tough Astros lineup. Skenes had a pretty good game. He was pulled after six innings. He gave up two runs (only one earned run) on six strikeouts and three walks. He exited the game with a 2-1 deficit but the Pirates rallied to give Skenes a no-decision on the day.

Now for his matchup against Bregman. In their first meeting, Skenes struck Bregman out on four pitches as he got him with an elevated slider. Bregman got his revenge in their second matchup as he hit a single to even the score. In their final matchup of the night, Skenes struck out Bregman once again. Final score: Skenes 2, Bregman 1.

These two will be facing off a lot more in the future and it will be fun to watch.

Former LSU baseball stars Paul Skenes, Alex Bregman to face off for the first time in MLB

Two former LSU-turned-MLB stars will face off for the first time on Monday night.

[autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] has had a meteoric rise since he was called up to the big leagues in May, and he’s already one of the top pitchers in baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Now, he’s set to face off against another former top-five pick out of LSU as he will start against [autotag]Alex Bregman[/autotag] and the Houston Astros on Monday night in what should be an electric matchup.

Bregman is struggling a bit at the plate this year, batting .254, but he remains a threat with 14 home runs and 20 doubles on the season. He’ll face of against Skenes who has lost just one game as a starter while turning in a sub-2.00 ERA and 97 strikeouts to just 13 walks.

If you want to catch the game live at 7:10 p.m. CT, it will be broadcast locally and also shown on MLB.tv.

Duke baseball alum Joey Loperfido called up by Houston Astros; set to make MLB debut

Duke baseball alum Joey Loperfido set to make MLB debut for the Houston Astros.

The Houston Astros have played horrific baseball to start the 2024 season, and now, with their backs against the wall and in desperate need of a spark, the Astros are looking to a former Duke baseball alum.

Former Blue Devils Joey Loperfido got called up to make his MLB debut on Tuesday when the Astros host the AL’s best team, the Cleveland Guardians.

Loperfido leads all minor league baseball with 13 home runs, including a solo bomb he smashed during his final game with the Triple-A Sugar Land Space Cowboys on Sunday. He finished the game 2-for-3, raising his OPS to 1.106 after 101 at-bats during a remarkable April.

Loperfido may not be a seasoned first baseman, but he’s had enough reps there, playing in seven games in Triple-A. His time in Durham saw him as an outfielder, so he also offers the Astros versatility defensively.

Houston drafted Loperfido out of Duke in the seventh round of the 2021 draft. At Duke, Loperfido started all 170 games he appeared in during his time with the Blue Devils. In his four years at Duke, Loperfido posted a .317 career batting average, collecting 201 hits, 37 doubles, nine triples, 18 home runs, and tallying 96 RBI. He drew 85 walks and held a slugging percentage of .488, adding an on-base percentage of .419. In the field, Loperfido posted a career fielding percentage of .992

Last season, he won the Astros’ Minor League Player of the Year award after slashing .278/.370/.510 with 55 extra-base hits across three levels of affiliated ball. The Athletic’s Keith Law ranked him as Houston’s sixth-best prospect before the season started.

The Astros are still led by the same core, which has helped them win two World Series: Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez, Kyle Tucker, and Alex Bregman. However, the rest of the lineup needs a spark.

Already ten games below .500 and six games back in the American League West, the Astros can’t rely on Jose Abreu much longer as he’s become one of the worst offensive players in the league to start the season.

The game starts Tuesday at 7:10 CT / 8:10 ET at Minute Maid Park and can be seen on MLB.TV.

Corey Seager got back at Alex Bregman with a spicy World Series speech mic drop

The Astros took the AL West division title, but the Rangers got the last laugh.

The Texas Rangers ended one of the longest championship droughts in the history of professional sports, capturing the World Series in five games over the Arizona Diamondbacks and winning the first title in the franchise’s 62-year history.

Despite not winning the AL West Division — that honor went to the rival Houston Astros — Texas went on an incredible run as a wild card squad, going 11-0 on the road in the postseason.

That run included knocking off the Astros in a seven-game ALCS, and at the Rangers’ championship parade, World Series MVP Corey Seager fired a shot across the bow at the Astros, and Alex Bregman specifically.

“I’ve just got one thing to say: Everybody was wondering what would happen if the Rangers didn’t win the World Series,” Seager said. “I guess we’ll never know.”

It’s a clear reference to comments made by Bregman in the clubhouse after the Astros clinched the AL West title via tiebreaker after both squads finished 90-72 in the regular season.

Seager and the Rangers ultimately got the last laugh, it seems.

Five former LSU players set for MLB postseason

These five former Tigers are hoping to make a World Series run this October.

The MLB playoffs begin on Tuesday night and a handful of former LSU players are set to appear.

Last year, we saw [autotag]Aaron Nola[/autotag] and [autotag]Alex Bregman[/autotag] both make World Series runs with the Astros eventually winning it all.

According to BetMGM, the Braves are the current title favorites at +250.

The top five is rounded out by the Dodgers, Astros, Orioles and Phillies.

Several players from this group contributed to postseason runs at LSU, including Nola, who helped lead LSU to a CWS title in 2009.

Here’s a closer look at the five former Tigers competing in October.

LOOK: Former LSU star Alex Bregman showed up to an Astros game wearing a Dylan Crews shirt

Just a former No. 2 MLB draft pick from LSU paying homage to another.

There’s nothing like seeing one LSU legend give some props to another.

Before the Houston Astros game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night, third baseman and former Tigers star [autotag]Alex Bregman[/autotag] paid homage to newly drafted [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] by donning a custom shirt.

Like Bregman back in 2015, Crews also became the second overall pick in the MLB draft when he was selected by the Washington Nationals earlier this month one pick after LSU teammate [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] became the first overall pick.

Crews will hope he can have similar success in his professional career as Bregman, a two-time All-Star and World Series champion who won the Silver Slugger Award back in 2019.

One of the best players in program history, Crews will also hope to follow Bregman’s quick trajectory through the minors after he reached the Major League ranks in just his second professional season.

LSU baseball joins 2024 Astros Foundation College Classic field

After a one-year hiatus from the Astros Foundation Classic, LSU is returning to make a run for the crown.

After a one-year hiatus from the Astros Foundation Classic, LSU is returning to make a run for the crown.

LSU played against Baylor, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and UCLA in 2022 with the Bruins finishing with the best record that year. In 2024, LSU will face Texas, Texas State, Louisiana, Vanderbilt and Houston.

The Tigers will take on Texas on Friday, Louisiana on Saturday, and Texas State on Sunday. Fresh off of winning a national title, the Tigers will be tested early in 2024. I am excited to see a possible [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] vs. Texas Part 2.

Hurd made his first start of the season against Southern and it did not go well. His next start was against Texas and he shut the Longhorns down for 4.2 innings as he allowed zero earned runs on three hits, four strikeouts, and three walks.

LSU playing against Louisiana is always a fun game to watch and playing the game during primetime will only amplify that. The last time LSU played Houston was in the Astros Foundation Classic in 2015. Current Houston Astros third baseman [autotag]Alex Bregman[/autotag] led the Tigers to a 4-2 win in that game.

Astros’ Alex Bregman says Texans WR Tank Dell ‘is going to be a superstar’

Houston Astros 3B Alex Bregman says that Houston Texans rookie WR Tank Dell has the makings to be a “superstar” in the NFL.

Growing up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Houston Astros third baseman heard the same criticism over and over throughout his adolescent years.

“He is very talented and works hard, but he lacks the size to become a true major league baseball player,” many critics would say.

All Bregman did was prove them wrong. After his sophomore season at Albuquerque Academy, he was named the USA Baseball Player of the Year. At LSU, his accolades included National Freshman of the Year (2013), the Brooks Wallace Award for the best shortstop in college baseball, and he was selected twice to the All-American team.

Those accomplishments, along with his extremely tough work ethic, were noticed by the Houston Astros, and they used the second overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft to select Bregman, and the rest is history. He has been an intricate piece in helping the Astros win two World Series championships.

So, the 5-foot-9-inch Bregman has proved the naysayers wrong about him being too small to play professionally.

On Saturday, during his post-game press conference, he sent a message to Houston Texans rookie wide receiver Tank Dell, who has battled the same height criticism he had to endure growing up.

“I think he is going to be a superstar,” Bregman said about Dell after helping the Astros defeat the Los Angeles Angels by hitting his fifth career grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning.

If his mother Porsche had been able to carve out the career path for her son, Dell could have eventually become teammates with Bregman on the Astros.

“I was actually trying to get him into baseball around six or seven years old. He was good at that, but would look at me like, ‘What’s the point of this?’” said Porsche Dell in an interview in April 2023.

Dell was selected with the 69th pick in the third round of the 2023 NFL by the Texans. He is currently in his third week of voluntary OTAs and has impressed his coaches with his work ethic both on and off the field.

“I don’t think anyone has noticed how big of a leap it is because he’s been on it, and he’s been working,” said Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik about Dell. “He’s taking what we’re telling him as far as coaching, as far as what we see in the fundamentals of route running. He’s a pretty natural separator, but to also apply, okay, how does this fit within the offense when I know the quarterback has to look at me at this time, and there’s a lot that goes into that for him. It’s been hitting the ground running for him.”

The Daytona Beach, Florida native was mesmerizing during his three years on the field for the University of Houston. He led the nation in receiving yards and touchdowns in his final season.

“Every time I step on the field, I feel like I with two chips on both shoulders,” Dell said during the 2023 NFL combine. “Every time I step on the field, I feel like I have a point to prove.”
