Broncos coach Sean Payton is very proud of his Lions coaching proteges

Broncos coach Sean Payton is very proud of his Lions coaching proteges including Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn

Sean Payton is in his first season as the head coach of the Denver Broncos. That’s not enough time to set up a culture or create strong trends or rivalries for his new team. However, playing in Detroit will be a different story for Payton’s Broncos.

When Payton looks across the sideline to the Lions, he’ll see a plethora of coaches he helped mentor and guide into the positions they have today during his lengthy tenure running the New Orleans Saints. It obviously starts with head coach Dan Campbell, but the ties with the Payton-era Saints go much deeper.

Payton was asked about his ties to Campbell and the Lions in a press conference this week. As is his custom — a trait which Campbell clearly inherited from his mentor — Payton gave a lengthy and candid answer:

“There are so many ties for me with this staff. Obviously, I’ve been with [Lions Head Coach] Dan [Campbell]. I was in New York when we drafted him. When I went to Dallas, I convinced [Pro Football Hall of Fame Head Coach] Bill [Parcells] to sign him as a free agent. I signed him later in New Orleans as a player. I spent the better part of two or three years trying to hire him as a coach, and I was lucky enough eventually. He became assistant head coach, and I have tremendous respect for everything about him—what he stands for, and how he coaches. You have [Lions Defensive Coordinator] Aaron Glenn, who I hired. He’s the same way. He’s going to be a head coach. [He was a] fabulous player [and is a] tremendous coach. [Lions LB] Alex [Anzalone]—you have [Lions Quarterbacks Coach] Mark Brunell. There are a number of guys with a lot of ties. As a former head coach of theirs, you’re proud of them. You really are. Enough flowers (laughs).”

It should make for an interesting matchup between teacher and students on Saturday in Ford Field.

Jack Campbell stepped up in a big way against the Saints

Jack Campbell stepped up in a big way against the Saints, and Russell Brown breaks it down

When linebacker Alex Anzalone went down with a thumb injury two weeks ago, there were a lot of questions surrounding the player that was going to step up in his place. Some had thought it was going to be Derrick Barnes and others thought it was Jack Campbell. When Jack Campbell’s name was brought up, there was some hesitation with some fans.

Their reasoning was simple.

He was a rookie that was playing with hesitation and was missing tackles in previous games. But most importantly, he had big shoes to fill. Trying to replace Anzalone is tough to do in this Lions defense. He’s an experienced player that comes from this defensive system during his days with the New Orleans Saints. Meanwhile, Anzalone leads the Lions with 87 tackles this season.

Certainly, the pressure got put on the shoulders of the rookie linebacker from Iowa. But he thrived in the situation and stepped up to the plate in a big way for the Lions defense. Let’s review the tape of Jack Campbell’s performance against the New Orleans Saints.

Starting with the first play that really stood out on tape was the one above. The Saints come out with their 11 personnel (one running back and one tight end) and prior to the snap, they motion a receiver on a jet-motion. Faking the jet, the quarterback goes to hand the ball off to the running back.

For the Lions, they come out in their nickel package with their inside linebackers being Derrick Barnes (LB 55) and Jack Campbell (LB 46). Aligned in a ’30’ technique (B-gap) is Campbell. Despite sliding inside a gap to account for the motion, Campbell does a great job reading the quarterback.

Campbell knows the hand-off to the running back is about to happen and he immediately gets downhill and attacks the ballcarrier. It’s a tremendous fill and tackle by Campbell and as you can see, he was pretty fired up about it. This play just goes to show some of the instincts and overall ability that he has as a player.

The next play I want to focus on is the one above where Campbell does a great job reading QB power. Looking at that play, the Saints come out of a shotgun formation with their Swiss army knife, Taysom Hill (TE/QB 7).

As you can see, Jack Campbell and Malcolm Rodriguez are the inside linebackers as the Lions come out in their nickel package. Aligned in the A-gap (between the left guard and center) is Campbell. Prior to the snap, Hill motions a receiver out of the backfield and away from him.

Once the ball is snapped, Campbell appears to blitz but honestly, I think he’s reading Hill the entire way. He presses the line-of-scrimmage and takes away any potential cutback lane for Hill. In the process, he grabs ahold of the legs of Hill and doesn’t let go. This play perfectly sums up how Campbell played throughout much of this game. Scratching and clawing his way to every ball to find ways to make a play for the defense.

Lastly, I want to focus on some of the pass coverage from Jack Campbell in this game. Against the Saints, he was targeted four times and allowed three receptions for 46 yards. Throughout the season, he’s allowed 20 receptions for 199 yards and two touchdowns.

When watching Campbell throughout the season, he’s been doing well in coverage. Despite playing with hesitation in some of his drops, he’s right there every single week. With more time, Campbell will start transitioning his position from just good coverage to interceptions and pass breakups.

Looking at the play above, he’s covering one of the best pass catching backs in the league in Alvin Kamara. The Saints come out 2×2 with a condensed set to the right of their formation. Meanwhile, the Lions come out in their nickel package with Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Jack Campbell. As the routes develop downfield, the Lions are in good coverage and Carr quickly checks this down to Kamara.

While it appears that Kamara is juggling the football prior to catching it, Campbell was with him every step of the way. He closes any separation that is between him and the running back and he makes a good open field tackle. This was a good stop for the Lions and it setup 3rd down.

Overall, Jack Campbell has been progressing every single week. He looked comfortable “manning” the middle of the Lions defense and it wouldn’t be surprising if it’s something that happens a little bit more down the stretch. Especially if Anzalone isn’t going to be playing at 100% each week. Regardless, there’s been a lot of promising signs from Campbell throughout his rookie season but his performance against the Saints was his best by far.

3 Lions earn spots on PFF’s All-Improved team for 2023

3 Lions earn spots on PFF’s All-Improved team for 2023, one of which might really surprise fans

We’re getting to the time of the season when lists and honors for the full season start trickling out. One of the first comes from Pro Football Focus.

PFF revealed it’s “All-Improved Team” for 2023. Three Detroit Lions make an appearance, including one that might be a surprise.

Running back David Montgomery, right tackle Penei Sewell and defensive tackle Alim McNeill made the cut.

McNeill is no surprise. The DT changed his body, becoming more of an attacking interior presence in his third NFL season. He’s second on the Lions in sacks (5) and has been among the most disruptive tackles around the league.

Montgomery is a bit of a surprise, in that he was already an accomplished back for the Bears. PFF explained it nicely,

It helps that Montgomery is rushing behind one of the best offensive lines in the NFL, but his vision and ability to break off big runs have still improved. Montgomery is recording an explosive run on 28.3% of his rushing attempts, the highest mark of his career, and he has rushed for a career-high 10 touchdowns. Sometimes, a change of scenery can get the best out of a player, and Montgomery is having a career year in Detroit.

Then there’s Sewell, who had already established himself as one of the NFL’s best offensive tackles over the course of his first two seasons. He has indeed improved, especially before struggling a bit the last two weeks,

Sewell’s 90.0 overall grade is the best among all NFL tackles by a considerable margin — Tyron Smith is second with an 86.5 grade — and he has allowed just 12 pressures all season. He was already a rising star, but Sewell is going to be considered one of the best in the game for a long time.

It’s a nice recognition on a list that typically includes players more like McNeill — guys who leap from average to noteworthy impact players.

One curious omission: linebacker Alex Anzalone. The follically gifted backer is having a career year, and it’s reflected in his PFF grades. Anzalone has an overall grade of 76.6 and a coverage mark of 77.3, both of which are handily the best of his seven-year NFL career. He also has a career-high three sacks.

Detroit Lions final injury report for Week 14 vs. the Chicago Bears

Detroit Lions final injury report for Week 14 vs. the Chicago Bears

The Detroit Lions will be without center Frank Ragnow when the team heads west to Chicago for Sunday’s NFC North showdown with the Bears. As had been previously noted, Ragnow is now officially ruled out for Week 14 with injuries to his knee, back and toe.

Also ruled out: rookie QB Hendon Hooker. While he remains on the NFI list, Hooker has been practicing with the team and is on the clock to be activated. Ruling him out as Hooker recovers from his knee surgery last year effectively indicates he won’t be activated until next week.

Linebacker Alex Anzalone carries no injury designation into the game, so Detroit’s defensive captain is good to go. Fellow linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, who doubles as the team’s fullback, is listed as questionable with an ankle injury. Rodriguez was a limited participant in all three days of practice this week.

Lions injury update: Thumbs up on Alex Anzalone

Lions injury update: Thumbs up on Alex Anzalone while Frank Ragnow remains out ahead of Detroit’s Week 14 trip to Chicago

Alex Anzalone missed the Week 13 game with a thumb injury, one which the hirsute linebacker said he didn’t even know when he injured it. After the week off and some treatment, Detroit’s defensive captain is back.

For the second day in a row, Anzalone was a full participant in Lions practice. He appears fully ready to roll after his thumb injury, which he said “kept sliding in and out” of place toward the end of the Thanksgiving game against the Packers. Anzalone had a screw inserted into the thumb to stabilize the digit.

In fact, there was no change at all from Wednesday’s practice participation report. Center Frank Ragnow remains out with injuries to his knee, back and toe. This was not his customary veteran’s rest day; Ragnow is not expected to play in Chicago on Sunday.

Linebacker/fullback Malcolm Rodriguez was limited for the second straight day with an ankle injury.

The final injury report and game designation comes out after Friday’s practice.

Lions injury update: Frank Ragnow sits out 1st practice of Week 14

Lions injury update: Frank Ragnow sits out 1st practice of Week 14 with a surprisingly long list of ailments

Remember the scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark” where Indiana Jones and Marian are sitting in the ship cabin and she asks the grizzled explorer, “Where doesn’t it hurt?”

That’s sort of the case for Detroit Lions center Frank Ragnow right now. The center was the only Lions player to not participate at all in Wednesday’s practice session. Ragnow sat out with listed injuries to his toe, back and knee.

Earlier in the week, head coach Dan Campbell indicated that Ragnow shouldn’t be expected to play in Week 14 at Chicago, so the sitting out is not a surprise. The inclusion of a back issue into the official injury report is a new and unwelcome development, however.

Only one Lions player was listed as a limited participant: linebacker/fullback Malcolm Rodriguez. He has an ankle issue. DT Alim McNeill is now on injured reserve and thus isn’t included on the report.

On a much more positive front, linebacker Alex Anzalone was back as a full participant. He missed the Week 13 win over the Saints with a thumb injury.

Lions downgrade Alex Anzalone, former Saints LB won’t play in Week 13

Alex Anzalone will miss Sunday’s matchup against his old team due to injury, but the former Saints linebacker found an important silver lining:

The Detroit Lions have officially ruled out linebacker Alex Anzalone for this week’s game versus the New Orleans Saints, downgrading his status from doubtful on Saturday.

This was Anzalone’s first opportunity to play against his former team. Not only will he not play, he won’t travel to New Orleans either. There’s a silver lining for him: Anzalone and his wife Lindsey announced the birth of their daughter on Friday through his official Instagram account, so the young family will have a weekend to themselves.

Anzalone isn’t the only former Saints player sidelined for this game due to an injury. C.J. Gardner-Johnson will also miss this game with a torn pectoral. He suffered this injury early in the season, and it’s unsure if he’ll return by year’s end. It’s the second time an injury has taken Gardner Johnson out of a matchup with the Saints in as many years. The Lions-Saints reunion now starts and stops with the coaching staff.

Final Detroit Lions injury report for Week 13 vs. Saints

Final Detroit Lions injury report for Week 13 vs. Saints has just one player ruled out

The Detroit Lions will be at nearly full strength when they face the Saints in New Orleans this Sunday. It’s a welcome status to have a smaller than normal injury report as the Lions look to get back in the win column in Week 13.

Only one active  Lions player is ruled as doubtful: linebacker Alex Anzalone. The veteran will likely miss a trip to play his old team as he deals with a hand injury. Anzalone did not practice all week.

Left guard Jonah Jackson is questionable with a wrist injury that has sidelined him for the last two games.

The only player ruled out is rookie QB Hendon Hooker, who hasn’t been activated from the NFI list. It will be at least another week before Hooker is on the active 53-man roster and in uniform.

Rookie LB Jack Campbell earns praise from Aaron Glenn

With Alex Anzalone out, rookie Jack Campbell will become the defensive signal-caller vs. the Saints

As the weeks have gone on this season for the Lions, we continue to hear positive things about rookie linebacker Jack Campbell. Much of that praise is coming from defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.

With linebacker Alex Anazlone set to miss multiple games due to a hand injury, the Lions defense is in desperate need for someone to step up. According to defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, that player appears to be Jack Campbell.

“The next voice you’re going to hear is Jack,” Glenn said on Thursday.

“He’s a true Mike backer. He has to be the one that makes all those checks and he’s capable of doing that. Smart, heady guy that’s tough. He’s built for these moments. I’m looking forward for him to be the actual mouthpiece of the defense going into this game,” said Glenn.

This was brought up when Glenn was asked on how the on-field communication will shift without Anzalone. Glenn said, “well, that’s the reason we got Jack.” It’s expected for Campbell to be the player to step-up and communicate more to the defense.

With the New Orleans Saints dealing with injuries at wide receiver, it wouldn’t be surprising if they relied heavily on their rushing attack. Their backfield consists of Alvin Kamra, Jamaal Williams and Taysom Hill.

Campbell has played 383 defensive snaps this season. It’s resulted in 31 tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack. Throughout some of my film studies, I’ve noticed that he’s played with some hesitation. Much of that is due to the fact that I think he’s afraid of making a mistake. As the Saints carry a backfield, quarterback and offensive line filled with veterans, it’s imperative that Campbell not only displays the ability to communicate but he’s also got to have a strong performance on the field.

Week 13’s Saints-Lions game filled with familiar faces on both sides

Week 13’s Saints-Lions game is filled with familiar faces on both sidelines. Former college teammates Dan Campbell and Dennis Allen will compete head to head:

As the New Orleans Saints and Detroit Lions prepare for their Week 13 matchup, there will be plenty of players and coaches with a history with their opponent.

Led by Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn, there are a number of former Saints on the Lions roster and coaching staff and vice versa. Here are all of the connections between the two teams:
