How every Alabama football coach since Bear Bryant fared in first Iron Bowl vs. Auburn

Kalen DeBoer won his first Iron Bowl matchup against the Auburn Tigers. Here’s how past Alabama football coaches fared in their first games against Auburn.

With a 28-14 win over the Auburn Tigers on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium, Alabama Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer joined some pretty rare company in the rich history of Alabama football.

DeBoer won “The Big One” in Year 1, beating Auburn behind a much-improved performance from Jalen Milroe, who completed 18-of-24 passes for 256 yards and ran for 104 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries. Alabama won its fifth straight over Auburn.

In doing so, DeBoer became just the third Alabama coach since 1948 — the year the rivalry resumed following a 41-yard absence — to win his first Iron Bowl showdown. He joined Dennis Franchione (2001) and Alabama coaching great Gene Stallings (1990).

From Nick Saban back in 2007 to Bear Bryant over 65 years ago, here’s a look at how past Alabama football coaches have fared in their first meeting vs. Auburn, as well as their all-time records against the Tigers and their biggest margin of victory in the series.

Nick Saban (Alabama coach, 2007-2023)

Gary Cosby Jr.-USA TODAY Sports

First Iron Bowl Game: Nov. 24, 2007

Final Score: Auburn 17, Alabama 10

Overall Record vs. Auburn: 12-5

Largest Margin of Victory in Series: 49 points — Alabama 49, Auburn 0, Nov. 24, 2012

Saban will be the first to tell you he experienced a rollercoaster of highs and lows in the Iron Bowl rivalry, mostly at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Four of the Alabama football legend’s five losses in the rivalry came on the Plains, including his first Iron Bowl in 2007.

Mike Shula (Alabama coach, 2003-2006)

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports © 2006 John David Mercerfirst

First Iron Bowl Game: Nov. 22, 2003

Final Score: Auburn 28, Alabama 23

Overall Record vs. Auburn: 0-4

Fans who remembered Shula’s time as the Crimson Tide’s quarterback from 1984-86, a period that included two Iron Bowl wins, wanted Shula to succeed. But as head coach, Shula took over at the lowest point in the program’s history. Unprecedented sanctions levied by the NCAA severely crippled Alabama in recruiting — at a time when Auburn was becoming a glorified NFL factory.

Dennis Franchione (Alabama coach, 2001-02)

First Iron Bowl Game: Nov. 17, 2001

Final Score: Alabama 31, Auburn 7

Overall Record vs. Auburn: 1-1

Largest Margin of Victory in Series: 24 points (2001)

“Coach Fraud” won his first Iron Bowl with a surprising 31-7 rout of Auburn behind quarterback Andrew Zow at Jordan-Hare. Perhaps his biggest crime wasn’t so much bed-hopping from Tuscaloosa to College Station at the end of 2002, but that he lost to Auburn just before his Lady of the Night act. Many Alabama fans still believe he had one foot out the door heading into the 2002 Iron Bowl, a game the Crimson Tide were a double-digit favorite to win.

Mike DuBose (Alabama coach, 1997-2000)

Scott Halleran /Allsport

First Iron Bowl Game: Nov. 22, 1997

Final Score: Auburn 18, Alabama 17

Overall Record vs. Auburn: 2-2

Largest Margin of Victory in Series: 14 points — Alabama 31, Auburn 17, Nov. 21, 1998

DuBose’s first Iron Bowl as head coach was almost a successful one. But “almost” doesn’t count in a rivalry like Alabama-Auburn, and a late fumble deep in Alabama territory by Ed Scissum with less than a minute left led Auburn to a game-winning field goal — and helped cement Bruce Arians’ firing as Alabama’s offensive coordinator.

Gene Stallings (Alabama coach, 1990-1996)

Rick Stewart/ALLSPORT

First Iron Bowl Game: Dec. 1, 1990

Final Score: Alabama 16, Auburn 7

Overall Record vs. Auburn: 5-2

Largest Margin of Victory in Series: 17 points — Alabama 17, Auburn 0, Nov. 26, 1992

Alabama had lost four straight to Auburn entering the 1990 edition of the Iron Bowl, a cardinal sin that led to the previous Crimson Tide coach leaving. The Tide’s defense was outstanding on this December day at Birmingham’s Legion Field, and Philip Doyle kicked three field goals to start a three-game win streak over the Tigers.

Bill Curry (Alabama coach, 1987-1989)

Alabama coach Bill Curry and players prior to a game. (Imagn)

First Iron Bowl Game: Nov. 27, 1987

Final Score: Auburn 10, Alabama 0

Overall Record vs. Auburn: 0-3

Curry recruited at a good level during his three seasons at Alabama, and his recruiting fingerprints can be found all over the 1992 national championship team. But when you don’t win this game, you don’t stay long at either school. After a 30-20 loss in the 1989 Iron Bowl (the first to be played at Jordan-Hare Stadium), Curry left Tuscaloosa for the Bluegrass State and the Kentucky Wildcats.

Ray Perkins (Alabama coach, 1983-1986)

Malcolm Emmons-USA TODAY NETWORK

First Iron Bowl Game: Dec. 3, 1983

Final Score: Auburn 23, Alabama 20

Overall Record vs. Auburn: 2-2

Largest Margin of Victory in Series: two points (1984, 1985)

Perkins had the unenviable task of following in Bear Bryant’s footsteps after Bryant’s retirement and, a month later, his sudden passing in January 1983. A former Bryant player, Perkins was 2-2 against Auburn. His two wins as head coach are classics: 1984’s “Wrong Way Bo” that ended with a 17-15 upset of Pat Dye’s 11th-ranked Tigers and a year later, Van Tiffin’s game-winning 52-yard field goal (“The Kick”) as time expired for a 25-23 win.

Bear Bryant (Alabama coach, 1958-1982)

Manny Rubio-USA TODAY Sports

First Iron Bowl Game: Nov. 29, 1958

Final Score: Auburn 14, Alabama 8

Overall Record vs. Auburn: 19-6

Largest Margin of Victory in Series: 38 points — Alabama 38, Auburn 0, Dec. 1, 1962

Yes, the two greatest coaches in Alabama football history, if not college football history, both lost to Auburn in their first seasons. Bryant would compile a 19-6 record against “that cow college.”

USA TODAY Sports experts predict Alabama-Auburn winner in huge Iron Bowl showdown

Here’s who USA TODAY Sports experts think will win the 2024 Iron Bowl.

It’s officially Iron Bowl Eve. The 2024 edition of Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Auburn Tigers features many storylines.

For Alabama (8-3 overall, 4-3 SEC), they’re hoping a once-promising season that saw them ranked No. 1 in the AP Top 25 poll after their thrilling 41-34 win over the Georgia Bulldogs on Sept. 28 doesn’t end in outright disaster under first-year coach Kalen DeBoer.

For Auburn (5-6, 2-5), the Tigers are in search of their first Iron Bowl win since 2019, and their first win in Tuscaloosa since 2010 when Cam Newton led an incredible 28-27 comeback after being down 24-0. More than that, Auburn can crush whatever faint hopes the Crimson Tide have of sneaking into the College Football Playoff.

As it stands, Alabama fell six spots to No. 13 in this week’s CFP rankings after an abysmal showing in a 24-3 loss to the Oklahoma Sooners in Week 13. Jalen Milroe was picked off three times, and the Crimson Tide failed to score a touchdown in a game for the first time since 2011. Alabama now needs a win over Auburn, plus some major help in the form of Top 25 upsets to reach the playoffs.

The Tigers scored their first upset of the year with a 43-41 4OT win over the Texas A&M Aggies at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Auburn quarterback Peyton Thorne threw for 301 yards and two touchdowns, and senior tailback Jarquez Hunter rushed for three scores and 130 yards on 28 carries in the upset win over A&M.

The last time Alabama football played a game on Thanksgiving

Curious about the last time Alabama football played on Thanksgiving Day? Here’s a trip down memory lane for Crimson Tide fans.

The 1992 college football season will always hold a special place in the hearts of Alabama Crimson Tide fans.

Alabama concluded its season with a dominant 34-13 win over the Miami Hurricanes in the Sugar Bowl to win the national championship. The Crimson Tide finished a perfect 13-0.

Included on their ’92 schedule? A Thanksgiving Day edition of the Iron Bowl matchup with the Auburn Tigers at Legion Field in Birmingham that was nationally televised on ABC. It’s the last time the Crimson Tide have played a football game on Thanksgiving.

For a trip down memory lane, here’s what happened when the Tide and Tigers met at “The Old Gray Lady” on Nov. 26, 1992.

Gene Stallings’ Alabama team was ranked No. 2 in the nation after nail-biting wins over No. 13 Tennessee, 17-10 in Knoxville, and No. 16 Mississippi State, 30-21, in Starkville in the run-up to the Iron Bowl. Standing in the way of an undefeated regular season was an Auburn team that was even more fired up than usual to play its biggest rival.

That’s because the biggest story entering the game wasn’t Alabama’s No. 2 ranking, but the news that broke the night before. Auburn head coach Pat Dye, a former Bear Bryant assistant and personal friend, had announced his resignation late Friday in Birmingham.

When the game kicked off, Auburn fought Alabama to a scoreless tie at halftime. Shortly afterwards, star cornerback Antonio Langham stole the day. With the Tigers having driven to the Alabama 39-yard-line, Langham tipped a pass from Auburn quarterback Stan White for an interception and returned it 60 yards for the game’s first points.

Alabama fans could breathe easy after that. Michael Proctor tacked on a 47-yard field goal late in the third quarter, and Sherman Williams broke a 15-yard touchdown run early in the fourth.

The Tide’s vaunted defense finished off a shutout that day for a 17-0 win. At the time, it was the first shutout win by an Alabama team in the Iron Bowl since Bryant’s 1975 squad blanked the Plainsmen, 28-0.

Two shutout wins by Alabama over Auburn have followed since that Thanksgiving Day at Legion Field in 1992. Under Nick Saban. the Tide snapped a six-game losing streak in the rivalry with a 36-0 win in Tommy Tuberville’s final game as Auburn coach in 2008. Four years later, in the final game for another Auburn coach (Gene Chizik), Alabama won 49-0.

Alabama leads the all-time series vs. Auburn, 50-37-1, and will be seeking their fifth straight win against the Tigers when the two teams meet Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT. The game can be seen on ABC.

Alabama-Auburn rivalry gets a top ABC, ESPN broadcast team

Here’s who will be on the call for ABC Saturday when the Alabama Crimson Tide face the Auburn Tigers in this year’s Iron Bowl showdown.

The Alabama Crimson Tide will be seeking their fifth straight win in the Iron Bowl rivalry against the Auburn Tigers Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.

On Monday, ESPN announced its Week 14 broadcast/commentator assignments. The team of Sean McDonough (play-by-play) and Greg McElroy (analyst) will have call of Alabama vs. Auburn. Molly McGrath will handle sideline reporting duties.

Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CT. Alabama-Auburn will be televised on ABC, the first Iron Bowl to air on ABC in 30 years.

It will mark the second time this season that the duo of McDonough and McElroy will call an Alabama game. The crew called the Crimson Tide’s 24-17 loss to the Tennessee Volunteers in the ‘Third Saturday in October’ rivalry earlier this year in Knoxville.

McDonough has provided his share of thrilling calls on Alabama games over the years. As the voice of the four-team College Football Playoff on ESPN Radio, he had the national radio call of Alabama’s 26-23 overtime victory over the Georgia Bulldogs in the 2018 College Football Playoff Championship at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

McElroy was Alabama’s starting quarterback in 2009 and 2010, guiding the Tide to a perfect 14-0 season and the national championship in the Rose Bowl against Texas.

Alabama (8-3) fell six spots to No. 13 in this week’s US LBM Coaches Poll following an ugly 24-3 loss to the Oklahoma Sooners over the weekend. Auburn (5-6) defeated the Texas A&M Aggies, 43-41, in 4OT at Jordan-Hare Stadium last Saturday.

Alabama defeated Auburn, 27-24, in last year’s Iron Bowl at Jordan-Hare thanks to an incredible 4th-and-31 Jalen Milroe touchdown pass to Isaiah Bond (nicknamed “Gravedigger”) with 32 seconds left.

Alabama baseball gets massive series win over the Auburn Tigers!

The Alabama baseball team defeated the Auburn Tigers on Sunday 6-1 and in doing so won its first series of SEC play this season. After Auburn took game one on Friday night, the Crimson Tide rallied to win on both Saturday and Sunday to get the series win.

With the win, Alabama now sits at 26-11 overall and 6-9 in SEC play and has a chance to make a late-season push to get to .500 within the conference.

Offensively, Alabama was led by Jim Jarvis. Mac Guscette and Andrew Pickney, all contributed two-hit games. Jarvis finished 2-for-4 with a triple, one RBI and two runs scored, one of which came on a steal of home. Guscette went 2-for-4 with a run, while Pinckney posted a 2-for-3 performance that included a walk and two runs scored.

Alabama baseball evens series with Auburn with 4-2 win on Saturday

Alabama baseball gets a huge win on Saturday to even the series with Auburn!

Thanks to a strong five-inning showing from senior pitcher Garrett McMillian, the Alabama baseball team was able to even the three-game series against Auburn, 4-2 on Saturday.

Despite being on a pitch count, McMillian tossed 5.0-plus scoreless innings surrendering just one hit while striking out four batters.

Offensively, Alabama was only able to muster five hits on the night but thanks to eight walks and three hit-by-pitch, the Tide was able to outscore the Tigers.

Alabama and Auburn will play for the series on Sunday. Alabama will send right-hander Jacob McNairy to the hill with Auburn calling on Christian Herberholz, also a righty. Fans can catch the series finale live on SEC Network+.

Alabama baseball drops series opener against Auburn in embarrassing fashion

Not the way Alabama needed the series to start!

In a pivotal home series against arch-rival Auburn, Brad Bohannon and the Alabama baseball dropped the series opener 8-4.

The Tigers held an 8-0 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth until the Alabama bats finally decided to wake up, but the comeback attempt was too little, too late.

With the loss, Alabama falls to 24-11 on the season and an abysmal 4-9 in SEC play.

If the Crimson Tide has hopes of winning its first series in conference play this season, Alabama will have to play much better on Saturday and Sunday.

This is do-or-die time for the boys on the diamond!

Behind Enemy Lines: Taylor Jones of Auburn Wire previews pivotal series between Tide and Tigers

Auburn Wire previews the pivotal series between Alabama and Auburn on the baseball diamond this weekend!

One of the most critical series for Alabama baseball in recent memory will take place this weekend when the Crimson Tide take on their in-state rivals the Auburn Tigers.

Alabama has yet to win a conference series this season and the schedule will not get any easier in the rugged SEC.

This is not only a must wins series for the Crimson Tide, but Auburn is also in desperate need of a series win in conference play.

Alabama’s bullpen has struggled this season and has led to several of the Crimson Tide’s losses. Auburn’s starting rotation has been up and down and that has led to the Tigers’ struggles this season.

Let’s go behind enemy lines with Taylor Jones of Auburn Wire to preview the pivotal series between Alabama and Auburn.

Everything Nate Oats said following Alabama’s overtime win over Auburn

In one of the most epic college basketball games to be played in the state of Alabama, No. 2 Alabama defeats their arch-rival Auburn to claim the SEC regular season title, 90-85.

Alabama trailed by as many as 17 in the second half, but an impressive 16-0 run put the Tide right back in it late in the contest.

Senior guard Jahvon Quinerly came off the bench and provided a spark for the Alabama offense scoring a game-high 24 points.

Freshman Jaden Bradley, who was held scoreless in regulation, came through in overtime for the Tide with six points.

Following the epic win, Crimson Tide head coach Nate Oats would speak to the media and discuss his team’s performance.

Senior guard Jahvon Quinerly saved the day for the Crimson Tide with his 24 points off of the bench.

Let’s take a look at Alabama’s stat leaders from its impressive come-from-behind victory over Auburn.
