Why Alabama Will Win

It’s been a bit of a struggle lately, but Bama has managed to keep on winning with wins in four of the last five games. It’s winning by keeping up on the boards and making up for the misses with a whole lot of offensive rebounds to clean things up.

Auburn turns the ball over way too much, it’s not great from three, and gives up too many points allowing 77 per game. It was able to come up with a slight shocker against Tennessee and the offense hasn’t been bad, but it’s had a hard time keeping up in the clutch.

However …

Why Auburn Will Win

Alabama has had a hard time shooting.

Auburn can’t seem to win when the other side is connecting from the field, but when teams are struggling – like Tennessee hitting just 41% and Missouri 38% – they lose.

It doesn’t have to be a total clunker of an offensive performance from the other side – and Auburn has to find a way to keep Bama from getting on the move – but the Tide failed to make 40% of their shots in six of the last nine games.

After a great midseason, Bama is the definition of a team leaking oil.

It got Auburn the first time 94-90 back in early January, but this is a different team now.

What’s Going To Happen

Alabama won’t get red hot, but it’ll be good enough.

Auburn’s defense isn’t going to be able to do enough when the Tide make a few key shots from the outside midway through the second half to finally make a little bit of a run.

It’s going to be like the last few games for the Tide. It’s not going to be easy, but it’ll be a win.

Why Auburn Will Win

The Auburn passing game is starting to work like it’s supposed to.

Bo Nix isn’t playing like Kyle Trask or Trevor Lawrence, and the O is nowhere near the high-flying fun show like Alabama brings every week, but it’s better. After failing to hit 50% of his passes in three of his first four games, Nix has been over 70% in his last three games and he’s doing a better job of hitting his downfield passes.

It helps to play Ole Miss, LSU and Tennessee over the last three weeks, but the receivers are there, Nix is experienced enough to handle himself well, and    Alabama’s secondary is a wee bit suspect. It’s talented, but it’s had a problem with the better quarterbacks on the slate so far.

More than anything else with Auburn, though, there aren’t a lot of turnovers.

How did Auburn pull off the win last year over the Tide? Two interceptions changed everything, and this year, the Tigers are No. 1 in the SEC in turnover margin going 5-0 when it wins or doesn’t lose the mistake battle, and is 0-2 when it does.

However …

Why Alabama Will Win

Alabama doesn’t screw up, either.

Along with its high-powered offense that has yet to show even the slightest slip, Bama isn’t giving teams any sort of an easy break. The offense has turned it over seven times in seven games – once in every game – and the win over Ole Miss was the only time the team lost the turnover battle.

Auburn’s defense has been good overall and solid against the pass, but it’s been lousy on third downs. With Alabama’s versatility, it can keep things moving in a variety of ways and by spreading it around, and it can also keep things very, very simple.

Najee Harris was brilliant in last year’s game – running for 146 yards and a score and catching four passes for 26 yards – and this year he continues to do everything right averaging close to six yards per carry to go along with his receiving skills. The O will revolve around him as much as possible, but …

What’s Going To Happen

This is the Mac Jones game.

With Tua Tagovailoa out, Jones was terrific against the Tigers last year, throwing for 335 yards and four scores for an offense that generated 161 more yards, he’d the ball for almost 36 minutes, and … gave up two pick-sixes.

Jones has only thrown three interceptions so far this year, he’s hitting 77% of his passes, and he’s averaging over 12 yards per throw as he’s spreading it around to all the NFL-caliber weapons at his disposal.

It’s the Iron Bowl, though, and Auburn is going to once again be plucky. It has won two of the last three in the series, but its last win in Tuscaloosa was back in 2010.

Like last year, the Tide will own the clock and destroy AU in the yardage battle, but this time around they’ll do it all without the two massive mistakes.

Alabama football fans are crying all over the Twitter timeline

Well, today was pretty damn awesome! Georgia beat Georgia Tech 52-7 to reclaim the Governor’s Cup and Auburn beat Alabama to eliminate the Crimson Tide from playoff contention.

Of course, there was a pretty controversial clock stoppage before halftime that caused Auburn to get a field goal over Alabama, but in the end, the Tigers deserved to win.

Fight me. I don’t care. Alabama lost and that’s that.

Now, enjoy the reactions from angry Tide fans.

This wasn’t a Bama tweet, but it was funny.

Alright…

Awe.

Uhh what?

So there’s this…

Then this.. Pick one.

Keep politics out of the Iron Bowl haha!

Yes, that’s our Roll Tide Wire co-worker….

He actually handled the loss pretty well, but others did not.

War Damn Eagle!

Why Alabama Will Win

Just let the offensive line eat.

The focus will be on QB Mac Jones and if he can handle the spotlight of the biggest game of his life, but he doesn’t have to do the work.

The Auburn defensive front is fantastic, and all it takes is a wee bit of success  on the ground to be productive.

Florida was able to run for four yards per carry, and LSU was able to do that, too. Georgia came close, averaging 3.9 yards per pop – that’s all just enough to get a little bit of control against a team that has to own third downs and get its defense off the field.

This isn’t all that hard – Auburn is going to load up to stop Najee Harris and the running game to force Jones to come through. He doesn’t have to bomb away, and he doesn’t have to be Tua Tagovailoa. He just has to get the ball to his elite receiving corps and let the stars do the rest.

Harris has caught fire at just the right time, running for nine touchdowns in his last five games. He took over in the loss to LSU, he’s been making plays as a receiver, and he’s had a light enough load throughout the season to be more than ready to be the workhorse.

With this Bama line, just keep hammering, and hammering, and hammering. Against Auburn, controlling the clock isn’t a bad thing for a Bama team used to lightning strikes.

Helping the cause is a defense that might not be the killer of previous years, but it takes the ball away in bunches with two or more in seven games. Against an Auburn offense that doesn’t score against the decent defense, just two takeaways might end this.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Auburn Will Win

Okay, Mac Jones. Playtime is over.

Jones got in his scrimmages against Arkansas and Western Carolina – completing a combined 28-of-34 passes for 510 yards and six touchdowns with no picks – but this is going to be a wee bit different.

When thrown into the fire against Tennessee, he was a pedestrian 6-of-11 for 72 yards, and didn’t push it all that much – or lead the way to a slew of scoring drives – against Mississippi State when Tagovailoa went out.

Finally, Bo Nix is in a big game in the road of the crusty veteran.

Auburn’s true freshman struggled in the win over Oregon. He struggled in the loss to Florida. He struggled in the loss to LSU. But in all three games, he kept on pushing, and he was able to come up with a few big throws to make a difference.

In all three games, the Tigers were alive late despite getting a rough outing from their quarterback. This isn’t the Auburn offense under Gus Malzahn that many might like, but the overall formula is effective.

In seven of his last nine games – the losses to Florida and LSU the outliers – he has hit 60% or more of his passes. Just as important, he threw a total of six picks against Oregon, Florida and LSU, and none against everyone else.

He’s settling into the job – outplaying Jake Fromm in the loss to Georgia – and coming up with a few terrific games against Ole Miss and Mississippi State. And now he gets to turn it loose.

It is possible to throw on Bama. South Carolina’s Ryan Hilinski was able to do it, and so was Texas A&M’s Kellen Mond.

Joe Burrow probably won the Heisman by throwing for 393 yards and three scores against the Tide.

Nix doesn’t have to be special. He just has to be okay, and his defense has to do the rest.

What’s Going To Happen

So what’s the real score coming into this game?

Of course Alabama vs. Auburn is a big giant deal no matter what, but the real question on a national scale isn’t about who wins; it’s about about how much Bama can win by.

It’s four-best-team time for the Tide.

It won’t be enough to squeak by with a solid 16-13 road win over the arch-rival. They have to make a statement in their final chance, and that means they have to win this convincingly, and they have to keep their foot on the gas for a full 60 minutes if they can. They have to look the part. They have to dominate …

And they’re going to come close, even if the final score doesn’t reflect it. Auburn’s defense has yet to allow more than 24 points on the year, and it’s not about to get gouged now.

The rest of the Bama puzzle pieces will rise up and be sharper without Tagovailoa available in the big moment. The running game won’t go off, but it’ll be effective, and Jones will be just fine. The defense will be its normal solid self on third downs, and drive after Auburn drive will stall.

This might not be enough of a win to push out Utah if it becomes the 12-1 Pac-12 champ, or even a 12-1 Big 12 champion. It’ll give the College Football Playoff committee something to think about, though.
