Former Notre Dame football coach Gerry Faust dies at age 89

Rest in peace, Coach.

Sad news for longtime Notre Dame football fans broke Monday. [autotag]Gerry Faust[/autotag], who coached the Irish from 1981 to 1985, has died at age 89.

Over his five seasons in South Bend, Faust accumulated a record of 30-26-1, good for a .535 winning percentage. Under his leadership, the Irish won the 1983 Liberty Bowl over Doug Flutie and Boston College. The following year, they lost the 1984 Aloha Bowl to SMU in its last game before it was handed the death penalty a few years later.

A disappointing 1985 season in which the Irish went 5-6 prompted Faust to announce that he would resign after the final game against a Miami team coached by Jimmy Johnson. The Irish lost that game, 58-7, and the university would go on to hire [autotag]Lou Holtz[/autotag] as Faust’s successor.

After his Irish tenure ended, Faust went to coach at Akron, where he did so for nine seasons and compiling a 43-53-3 record. But he never lost his love for the Irish no matter how much time passed:

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Faust family during this difficult time.

For many, this has been a game to circle on the calendar. It will be the first game between Akron and Rutgers since 1990. Rutgers won the last matchup 20-17. Akron will be looking to start this century with a win over a Scarlet Knights program coming off its best season in years.

[lawrence-related id=38992,38989]

During the 2023 season, the Zips posted a 2-10 record and did not win on the road. They struggled offensively, scoring around 16 points a game while allowing 28. Life won’t get easier against a Rutgers team that has thrived over the last few years on defense and added a few weapons on offense.

While the rosters for both teams could change in the coming months, Community Day will give these two programs a unique chance to face off.

Warriors add Akron’s Enrique Freeman in second round of latest BR mock draft

The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 18.6 points and 12.9 rebounds per game last season for the Akron Zips.

As the NBA Finals continue and the draft approaches, more mock drafts are beginning to be released with different predictions for the Golden State Warriors’ pick in the second round of the draft.

In the latest mock draft from Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Wasserman, the Warriors landed an intriguing and productive prospect out of Akron in the second round. With the No. 52 overall selection in the 2024 draft, Wasserman penciled Akron’s Enrique Freeman to the Warriors. According to Wasserman, Freeman was one of the most productive players during the scrimmage period at the NBA combine.

Via Bleacher Report:

The biggest riser of the predraft process so far, Enrique Freeman turned his Portsmouth Invitational play into a G League Elite Camp invite, where he earned a call-up to the NBA combine.

He wound up being one of the most productive players during scrimmages against projected second-round picks, impressing with his shooting range, post skill, finishing activity and rebounding.

Scouts believe he got himself drafted in Chicago. A second-round team will be willing to bet on his versatility, production at Akron and the story of a former walk-on.

Read Wasserman’s full mock draft here.

Freeman played five seasons at Akron, earning MAC Player of the Year last season with 18.6 points on 58.4% shooting from the field to go along with 12.9 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game as a senior. During the 2021-22 season as a sophomore, Freeman was also named MAC Defensive Player of the Year.

Freeman helped lead Akron to an NCAA Tournament berth in 2024. However, Akron was eliminated in the first round by the Creighton Blue Jays. Freeman tallied 21 points against Creighton in the round of 64.

The NBA draft is scheduled to begin with round one on June 25 in Brooklyn, New York. The second round will be the next day on June 26.

Catching up with the Boston Celtics’ 2023 NBA draft workouts Part IV

Let’s dive into who the Celtics might be targeting at No. 35.

Even with the offseason here in earnest, the Boston Celtics have plenty on their plate regarding their future as they continue to work out prospects projected to go in the second round of the ’23 NBA draft.

With the Celtics likely to need cheap depth in the future, look for prospects who are either polished enough to get some real minutes in their rookie campaign or who might be okay with a season or two stashed abroad while the team makes decisions about how it will use the new two way player slot added to rosters in the latest collective bargaining agreement recently adopted by the league.

Adding to our previous reporting of the team’s known workouts comes a new wave of prospects Boston has been working out — let’s dive into who the Celtics might be targeting at No. 35.

Pending inclement weather cancels Notre Dame-Bowling Green

No game Tuesday.

Monday was a wet day in South Bend. With Tuesday’s forecast not looking any better, Notre Dame’s scheduled game against Bowling Green at Frank Eck Stadium has been canceled. That means the Irish’s 25-17 record will stay where it is for now.

The rainout means a wet start to what will be a memorable month for the Irish, who have won seven of their past nine games and thus earned four votes in the latest national poll. Their season at Frank Eck Stadium concludes with a pair of three-game series against NC State and Akron. They’ll face Northwestern at Wrigley Field and then finish the regular season with a four-game series against Boston College, which includes a game at Fenway Park.

Not every baseball player throughout history can boast playing at MLB’s two oldest stadiums in the same week, but the Irish will get that opportunity. To say the least, times are good for the program right now.

Why Akron Will Win

Where did that come from?

Akron had fought through the first season under head coach Joe Moorhead with more production and promise than previous years, but without the results to show for it.

Jeff Undercuffler stepped up with his best performance of the season – throwing for 312 yards and three scores in the stunning 44-12 win over Northern Illinois for the first win of the year over an FBS team. The offense hasn’t been a problem and should bomb away on Buffalo, too.

The UB pass defense hasn’t been bad overall, but Ohio was able to roll for over 300 yards and five scores a few weeks ago, the run defense disappeared, and it’s been an ugly three game losing streak without a win since October 22nd.

Akron can play loose – it got its win, things are pointing up, and it can play the spoiler role.

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Buffalo Will Win

The Bulls are a win away from a nice trip, various gifts and prizes, and more football.

It’s this simple. Win, go to a bowl game. Lose, and the season is over.

The Bulls have to control the clock and the game from the start. They’re good at operating at their own pace, and Akron has too many problems consistently converting on third downs to keep things going – the Northern Illinois game aside.

The offense has stalled a bit, but it doesn’t have a bit problem with turnovers, Akron is good for at least two giveaways, probably three, and few teams are better at taking advantage of its chances with UB terrific in the red zone.

Championship Week Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

This was supposed to be played a few weeks ago, and then nature dumped a whole lot of snow on Buffalo. At the very least, both teams should be fresh.

The Akron offensive line has stepped it up over the last few weeks. The running game has been better, but there’s still a problem keeping defenses out of the backfield. As long as the Buffalo run defense can hold up, the defense should be okay despite allowing at least 250 yards through the air.

It won’t be a breeze, but Buffalo will hang on late to get its bowl game.

Eastern Michigan vs Akron Game Preview

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

All of a sudden, Eastern Michigan went from having a weird flaky also-ran of a season to being a win away from going bowling. There’s been next to nothing predictable or steady about this team, but it keeps on finding ways to stay in games and pull off wins.

There was no offense whatsoever last week against Toledo, and it still only lost by three.

It al doesn’t make a whole lot of sense – there’s almost nothing this team does all that well – but it’s amazing at converting on its third down chances and it scores almost every time it gets a good break or goes on a nice drive.

For the most part, it has a huge problem against teams that can get the ground game going. There’s not much happening from the line to be disruptive, but it usually holds its own.

Now it gets to deal with an Akron offensive front that can’t generate any semblance of a push for the ground game and is the worst in America in pass protection. But …

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Akron Will Win

Akron can throw.

It has a hard time protecting DJ Irons, but he’s winging it around averaging over 300 yards per game in MAC play for the second-best passing game in the conference.

Again, Eastern Michigan doesn’t bring much of a pass rush – or any pass rush – and the offense isn’t going to come out and hang 50 on the board. There were a few outliers when the running game went off – line in the stunner over Arizona State – but Akron should be able to hold up just well enough to not get totally gouged.

As long as the offense is throwing well this could be a fight. Eastern Michigan is 1-3 when allowing 235 passing yards or more, and Akron will throw for at least that many.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Akron hasn’t had a lick of luck at home in MAC play, but it’s been competitive. On the flip side, Eastern Michigan has been horrible at home and terrific on the road.

The Zip passing game will be decent enough to stay in the game, but two turnovers will be a problem and the run defense will have even bigger issues.

There won’t be anything pretty about this, but becoming bowl eligible will look gorgeous.

Miami University vs Akron Game Preview

Why Miami University Will Win

The RedHawks might be struggling a bit, but the MAC’s No. 1 defense has been getting the job done.

It hasn’t allowed more than 325 yards off total offense in three of the last four games, the pass defense has been terrific, and in this the D just needs to hold serve while the O rolls through the mediocre Akron defensive front.

It’ll be the MU defense, though, that takes over. The pass rush is fine, but it’ll look great against an Akron line that’s the worst in the nation in both sacks given up and tackles for loss allowed.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Akron Will Win

The Miami offense has hit a wall.

It’s been like pulling teeth to put points on the board, and over the last two weeks against Bowling Green and Western Michigan it couldn’t seem to get anything going with no ground attack whatsoever.

And yes, the MU defense is great, but the team lost those three games over the last four weeks when it gave up fewer than 300 yards.

Akron has been able to keep games close lately with an offense that comes up with passing yards in bunches, but …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

There’s always that one moment with Akron when the fun stops thanks to the leaky offensive line.

The yards will be there, but problems on third downs will be costly as the game goes on, and the defense won’t be able to hold up as the RedHawks find their ground game again.

Akron vs Kent State Game Preview

Why Akron Will Win

If the passing game is going the Zips have a chance to make this interesting.

Kent State’s defense continues to be decent, but it can be thrown on with everyone combining to hover around a 70% completion rate.

Demarcus Irons might not be Patrick Mahomes, but the Akron passing game under first year head coach Joe Moorhead is good for well over 200 yards per game and can push for a whole lot more if everything breaks right.

He has to go off because …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Kent State Will Win

There’s absolutely no Akron running game.

The Zips are dead last in the nation in rushing averaging 67 yards per game partly because the offensive line that can’t run block is the worst in the country in pass protection.

Kent State might be all about its offense and the high-octane FlashFast style, but the defense could use a bit of a break. It’s not going to have to worry about anything on the ground, the absent pass rush should make an appearance, and …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

This should be a closer game than the Golden Flashes might like.

Akron might be losing, but it’s been competitive lately with passing game doing a little bit to keep up. It won’t be enough as the offense comes up with a good balance, 500 yards or more overall, and pulls away late.
