Last week, Michigan State football lost out on a big time recruit they had been recruiting for months when 2022 4-star QB AJ Duffy committed to Florida State. Now, the Spartans have a chance to return the favor.

On Tuesday, 4-star quarterback Nicco Marchiol announced that he would be taking an official visit to Michigan State. Marchiol is currently committed to Florida State, but the addition of Duffy to their recruiting class might have opened an opportunity for his recruitment.

Marchiol is the No. 17 ranked pro style quarterback in his class and the No. 291 ranked player in the 2022 class by the 247Sports rankings.

Four-star IMG Academy QB AJ Duffy commits to Florida State

Four-star IMG Academy quarterback AJ Duffy committed to Florida State on Thursday night.

Four-star IMG Academy quarterback AJ Duffy is staying in Florida.

Duffy brought an end to his recruitment Wednesday night, committing to Florida State over offers from Arizona State and Michigan State. Arizona State was once the favorite to land Duffy, but the Seminoles did just enough to land their second quarterback of the 2022 recruiting cycle.

“I feel great about my decision,” Duffy told 247Sports’ Greg Biggins. “There are a lot of reasons why I chose Florida State but the biggest is just the overall feeling I had on my visits and the direction the program is going in moving forward.

“I felt a strong connection with the coaching staff throughout this process. I really like coach Kenny Dillingham a lot. That’s my guy and today being his birthday, that’s a big reason why I wanted to do it today. I love Coach Mike Norvell a lot, too. He’s a great offensive-minded head coach and I love the offense. It’s a great all-around fit for me and it just felt right. I slept on it this week like I said I would and the last few days, I had FSU in my head and knew that was where I wanted to be.”

Duffy’s trip to Tallahassee to check out Florida State’s spring game also played a major role in his decision to commit, as the Seminoles shot up his list following the visit.

“There were about 15,000 fans there but it felt like more than that,” Duffy said. “I really can’t describe what it was like there, it was just awesome how great the fans were. That’s one thing I always liked about FSU, the tradition and the passionate fan base but I didn’t know it was going to be like that. I love the vibe out there, it’s just different and really hard to put into words.”

247Sports ranks Duffy as the No. 147 overall recruit and No. 8 pro-style quarterback in the class of 2022.

Michigan State is one of three teams that are still truly in the chase for four-star quarterback AJ Duffy, according to 247Sports.

Greg Biggins of 247Sports put out a post on Monday morning providing an update on Duffy’s recruitment, and he considers Michigan State as one of only three teams still in the hunt. Biggins is ruling out both Penn State and West Virginia at this point in time, and considers Michigan State, Arizona State and Florida State as the three favorites to land Duffy.

Here’s some of what Biggins had to say about Michigan State’s stance in Duffy’s recruitment:

“Getting less buzz than the Sun Devils and the Seminoles, the Spartans have quietly remained in this race and have done a great job recruiting Duffy. He just visited over the weekend for the spring game and said he loved everything about his time in East Lansing.”

Duffy is rated as the No. 6 pro-style quarterback and No. 76 overall recruit in the 2022 class.

Biggins also made note that he expects Duffy to commit prior to the fall so big news could be coming Michigan State’s way in the next few months.

Michigan State’s top QB target for the class of 2022 is IMG Academy’s AJ Duffy. Duffy, originally from Rancho Verde High School in Moreno Valley, California, is a 4-star and ranked the 103rd prospect according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Duffy was supposed to make his commitment sometime today, March 31st, but has pushed the decision back in order to fully make sure he is ready.

The Spartans are now the beneficiaries of the delay, as Duffy plans to take a self-guided unofficial visit to East Lansing for the spring game in April.

Michigan State is locked into a three-team race along with Arizona State and Florida State to earn Duffy’s talents. Arizona State has been perceived as the longtime leader but late charges by the Spartans and Seminoles have this neck and neck.

All three coaching staffs believe they have done enough to gain Duffy’s commitment, making this an interesting finish.
