Navy vs Air Force Game Preview

Why Navy Will Win

Finally, Navy was able to be on the right side of a decent win.

It’s been a rough run for the program to start the season, but there was finally a moment of fun in the 23-20 win over East Carolina.

What went right? The passing game hit on just enough big plays on the 11 throws to matter, the defense came up with one of its better games in a long time – the two takeaways helped – and not turning the ball over was a big deal.

There’s always a fine line when it comes to what Navy needs. It needs to run well, it needs to control the clock, and it really, really can’t screw up. There was just one turnover last week after giving it up six times in the first two games.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Air Force Will Win

Air Force hasn’t given away any turnovers over the last two games.

Yeah, Navy won, but the running game still isn’t working like it needs to.

It’s fine, it’s averaging close to 200 yards per game, but it’s hardly dominating like the Air Force attack is.

Navy controls the clock by holding the ball for 34 minutes a game. Air Force is No. 2 in the nation in time of possession keeping it for over 36 minutes per outing, and that’s because the running game is averaging a ridiculous 412 yards per outing.

But …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Navy’s run defense has been solid so far. Granted, that’s because everyone is throwing it on the porous secondary, but allowing 2.3 yards per carry isn’t bad.

Style knows style – these two know how to run, they know what the other side, and …

Air Force does it all better.

Nevada vs Air Force Game Preview

Why Nevada Will Win

The turnovers have to come.

The Wolf Pack aren’t getting enough consistently out of their passing game, and the ground attack is only averaging 3.2 yards per carry, but they’re doing okay against the run – they held both Incarnate Word and Iowa to under 200 yards in the losses – and they’re taking the ball away.

The didn’t get any against the Hawkeyes, but they came up with 11 in the three previous games and have to somehow force Air Force mistakes.

Oddly enough, the Falcons didn’t turn it over in the loss to Wyoming, but gave it up five times in the wins over Northern Iowa and Colorado. The Pack can force fumbles, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Air Force Will Win

Nevada is having a hard time generating third down stops, and there’s nothing to worry about with the passing game. That, along with an offensive front that’s allowing too many plays in the backfield, is a bad mix against Air Force.

Time of possession hasn’t been a problem, but teams are converting their third down chances 44% of the time. That’s where Air Force rises up. They’re the best in the Mountain West converting 47% of their chances.

No, they don’t generate a pass rush, but the run defense should be able to hold up without a problem. The biggest issue for Nevada, though, is …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Keeping control.

Air Force is amazing at bleeding the clock, and it should be able to do it against the Wolf Pack defense on drive after drive.

Again, the run defense has been okay so far, and Wyoming was able to stuff the Falcons, but back at home the O should crank up about 400 yards on the ground and force Nevada to throw. That’s when the big problems start.

Broncos’ stadium to host Air Force-Army game in 2023

College football will return to the Broncos’ stadium in 2023. Empower Field at Mile High will host Air Force-Navy next fall.

College football will return to the Denver Broncos’ stadium in 2023.

Empower Field at Mile High will host the Air Force-Navy game on Nov. 4 next year, the team announced Sunday.

“We are looking forward to partnering with the Denver Broncos to host the Air Force vs. Army game next season,” Air Force director of athletics Nathan Pine said in a statement. “Construction on our east side renovation project will not allow us to showcase the service academy rivalry game in Falcon Stadium the way we want to.

“While the end result at Falcon Stadium will be well worth it, hosting the game at Empower Field in 2023 and working closely with the Broncos staff will create a memorable experience for our players and our fans and will keep the important advantage of playing this game in Colorado.”

Tickets to the game will go on sale in February.

This year’s game between the Falcons and Black Knights will be played at Globe Life Field, home of MLB’s Texas Rangers. The Air Force leads the all-time series against the Army 33-16-1 since 1959.

Earlier this month, the Broncos hosted the University of Colorado and Texas A&M University on Sept. 11. The Aggies defeated the Buffaloes 10-7.

Empower Field at Mile High has hosted 18 Division I college football games since the stadium opened in 2001.

Air Force vs Wyoming Game Preview

Why Air Force Will Win

Who’s playing better than Air Force?

It’s Air Force, so of course the running game is going off.

It rumbled for 582 yards against Northern Iowa to start the season, followed that up with 435 yards in the 41-10 blowout against Colorado, and it’s currently leading the nation in rushing by 202.5 yards more than the No. 2 team, Minnesota.

The offensive line has been good, the combination of Brad Roberts inside and Haaziq Daniels outside has been unstoppable, and the defense is doing its part.

Wyoming likes to control the tempo and the style, but Air Force owns the clock – it’s keeping the ball for close to 37 minutes per game. It’s all working.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Wyoming Will Win

Again, Wyoming has the style that might be able to keep the Falcons under wraps.

It hasn’t done too much to control the pace so far, but the run defense is holding up fine, the front is getting into the backfield, and the takeaways are coming.

The Cowboys didn’t generate a turnover in the loss to Illinois, but it came up with five in the wins over Tulsa and Northern Colorado.

For all of the good things Air Force is doing, it’s fumbling too often, losing five in the first two games. Wyoming has to capitalize on every opportunity, and it has to control the clock to do it.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The Wyoming offense has stepped up since the rocky start against Illinois, and Air Force hasn’t been challenged yet.

Tulsa didn’t run much on the Cowboys, and Northern Colorado couldn’t. Air Force is too sharp, too quick, and playing too well with the ground game controlling everything.

Wyoming will have a few explosive plays, and the Falcon secondary will be pushed for the first time this year, but a few late scoring drives will take the air out of the ball.

Colorado vs Air Force Game Preview

Why Colorado Will Win

Okay, Colorado, very funny.

It was a disappointing opener against TCU, losing 38-13 with an offense that couldn’t keep things moving, couldn’t find a running game, and couldn’t get a push in the second half when the team was in the game.

However, it was the opener.

The team has decent parts, the attack has the ability to control the pace the the clock for long stretches, the defense has the secondary to hold up, and the front line has the upside to be much, much better than it showed against the Horned Frogs.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Air Force Will Win

Air Force isn’t the team you want to face when things aren’t going well.

Colorado wasn’t quite a mess against TCU, but it was far from crisp. The O couldn’t find anything that consistently worked, but the real problem was a run defense that gave up yards in massive chunks.

TCU averaged over nine yards per carry as it ripped off big run after big run.

Welcome to Air Force.

This is a veteran team that got 100-yard running games out of veteran back Brad Roberts and QB Haaziq Daniels – and the team cranked up 582 yards on the ground – in the 48-17 win over Northern Iowa, all while holding the ball for over 35 minutes.

Colorado will adjust, it has Pac-12 talent up front, and it doesn’t matter if the Air Force timing is down like it was over the first three quarters against UNI.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Colorado will be better.

Air Force is good, it’s going to be jacked to have this at home, and the running game will work, but the Buffaloes will adjust offensively from last week and spread things out a little more to be far more competitive.

And then Air Force will go on a 14-play, 84-yard scoring drive that eats up nine minutes.

Kyle Westmoreland becomes first Air Force Academy graduate to earn a PGA Tour card

He was the first Air Force grad to play in one of the four men’s majors. Now he’s the first to earn a PGA Tour card.

Old rivalries die hard. Just ask Kyle Westmoreland, the first Air Force Academy graduate to earn his PGA Tour card.

“Go Air Force. Beat Army. Sink Navy. And we’re Tour bound, baby,” he said with the sun setting behind him and 24 others who made their dreams come true Sunday at Victoria National in Newburgh, Indiana.

Westmoreland, who saw his score inch up in the wrong direction each day this week, posted scores of 69-70-71-72 and finished 6 under, 15 shots back of Korn Ferry Tour Championship winner Justin Suh. But it was good enough for Westmoreland, the first Air Force grad to play in a U.S. Open, to earn his place on Tour for the 2022-23 season.

He was a senior in college at Air Force in 2014 and then served out his five-year commitment, reaching the rank of captain serving in the financial management division. But he never wavered on his goal of playing professional golf.

Westmoreland, 30, finished in the 25th and final spot in the points standings.

He was 13th in driving distance on the Korn Ferry Tour at 319 yards. He had three top-10s and made 14 cuts in 26 events during the season. He earned $122,575 in on-course winnings during the 2022 campaign.

The next PGA Tour season starts in Napa, California, at the Fortinet Championship, Sept. 15-18. Defending tournament champ Max Homa has committed to play. Others in the field include Rickie Fowler, Gary Woodland, Brandt Snedeker and past winner Cameron Champ.

Air Force vs Northern Iowa Game Preview

Why Northern Iowa Will Win

Northern Iowa has enough of a run defense to keep Air Force from going off.

The Panthers might not have too much of an offense for the Falcons to worry about, but they can load up against the run, they’re going to be great again on third downs, and they’re more than happy to play a grinding game that comes down to key defensive stops.

Air Force has experience back from the great defense of last year, but the losses were big ones. It’s going to take a little while to find the right mix, but …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Air Force Will Win

Northern Iowa wasn’t careful enough with the ball last year, and the offense wasn’t good enough on third downs. That’s a brutal mix against Air Force.

The Falcons might not be able to run wild on this D, but they’ll still be able to control the clock and the tempo.

UNI’s defense should be great at taking the ball away again, but if the other side keeps coughing it up, and if the offensive line struggles in pass protection, Air Force should be able to own the tempo throughout.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

This is a good enough UNI defense to keep this from getting too ugly – the D will get into the backfield and stop things before they start – but Air Force will find its groove, control the ball for over 35 minutes, and will get through with a good win in a fun game – at least for the first half.

Mountain West Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Mountain West predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

With all the chatter in the college football world about expansion and realignment – the Mountain West is deep in the rumor mix with a whole lot of possibilities – there’s still a 2022 season to play. How should it all shape up in the Mountain West?

Beyond just seeing if the Pac-12 and Big 12 are interested, there’s one huge change – the divisions are gone.

The conference has several strong teams, and the two best will play for the championship.

It’s a free for all among the teams to get into the top spots, but the schedules stay intact. There’s a slight imbalance with the stronger teams in what used to be in the West Division facing each other, but they would’ve had to do that anyway.

How should the season go and where is everyone projected to finish? Here are the preseason predictions for all the Mountain West teams.

Air Force Falcons Preview 2022

The 2021 Falcons were this close to turning a great season into something truly special. The three losses all came by six points or fewer and all could’ve easily have gone the other way.

Everything worked. The rushing offense led the nation, the attack dominated the time of possession battle, and the defense ended up as the statistical best in the Mountain West.

Six starters return on offense and five are back on D, but that doesn’t quite tell the whole story with a slew of key contributors and the program’s ability to fill in the gaps quickly about to shine.

Air Force Falcons Preview 2022: Offense

Run the ball, run the ball, run the ball, and hit the deep pass by taking advantage of defenses that freak out about the run. That’s what Air Force did brilliantly last year, and it’s about to do it all again.

The Falcons were able to dominate on third downs, ran for 328 yards per game, and they averaged a nation-high 22.6 yards per completion. They controlled games, kept the defense off the field, and were great at taking the air out of the ball.

There’s not a whole lot of passing happening, but that’s okay. The job of QB Hazziq Daniels is to hit the open man when he’s got the chance, and he should be able to do that just enough to get by. He’s not all that accurate – he missed half of his passes – but he ran for 736 yards and 11 scores and kept the big mistakes to a minimum.

Leading receiver Brandon Lewis is gone, but he only caught 21 passes. The Falcons have other options to stretch the field and catch that one big pass a game.

It’s all about the ground attack. The Falcons were able to run for 300 yards or more eight times last year with 44 touchdowns and over five yards per carry. Daniels was second on the team in rushing, veteran fullback Brad Roberts is back after leading the way with 1,357 yards and 13 scores, and they’re not alone with a deep group of options behind them.

Three offensive linemen are back with good size and a solid starting five. The depth, though, is lacking and has to develop.

Air Force Falcons Preview 2022: Defense

The defense was helped by the offense, and it will be again. This group was great at getting into the backfield and made a whole lot of plays, but the O that’s great at holding on to the ball gives everyone on the D rest. Five starters are back, but the personnel losses are huge.

Top tackler Tre Bugg is done in the secondary, top lineman Jordan Jackson is gone, and tough-guy tackler Damonte Means has to be replaced. Throw in the loss of safety Corvan Taylor, and the Falcons have to find new difference-makers.

The linebacking corps will be more than fine, but the secondary needs help around safety Trey Taylor – a good-hitting potential all-star talent. All-Mountain West pass rusher Vince Sanford will be a disruptive force, but the tackles and beef up front have to settle into a good rotation.

Notre Dame releases nonconference schedule for 2022-23 season

Which game are you most looking forward to?

As much as Notre Dame is looking forward to playing Big Ten competition, the nonconference schedule is just as exciting. We know this because that schedule for the 2022-23 season has been announced. When you look at quite the number of high-profile opponents the Irish have scheduled, this is the exact measuring stick you want to see what kind of team you have.

The season officially begins with a trip to Colorado and the 2022 Ice Breaker Tournament. The Irish will begin that with a game against defending national champion Denver, followed by one at the Air Force Academy. This will be the Irish’s sixth time in this tournament, which they won in 2012 and 2018.

Of note, the opening home slate against Northern Michigan will be played on two nonconsecutive days so that neither game conflicts with the football team’s home game against Stanford that weekend.

And, of course, it’s always nice to schedule both Boston schools with the rich traditions they have.

Here is the full nonconference schedule:
