USAFA is coming off a pair of emotional wins — over Wyoming and Navy — and its strength of schedule needs to start weighing down some of its proficient statistical prowess. Early-season routs over Utah State, San Jose State, and San Diego State have not aged well, especially for a Falcon offense that piled up big numbers against those foes.

Figure Colorado State passing as being able to log some come-back points, even it’s in the late-game, back-door cover department.

Over/Under

The total has gone Under in 12 of Colorado State’s last 18 games. The Under has also cashed in 5 of the Falcons’ last 6 road games.

And that’s the value play here. Peg Air Force’s offensive capabilities as being inflated due to some earlier games. CSU’s defensive red-zone profile figures as adequate enough to perhaps turn a couple Falcons scores into those of the 3-point variety, and the weather for this one — cold, snow, a bit of a wind — won’t help either offense find paydirt.

Wyoming took last year’s meeting 17-14 but you can expect Air Force to get a measure of retribution on this contest at home. Both teams like to run the ball a lot. The Cowboys are adequate in succeeding on the ground; Air Force is prolific.

The Falcons are exceptional when it comes to staying on schedule. Their 5.4 yards per carry helps, and so do some well-timed, change-of-pace pass plays (82.0 YPG). Air Force piles up chain-moving drives with a 4-down philosophy, and when it reaches the red zone, it converts. USAFA’s 85% touchdown rate in the red zone ranks 2nd in the nation.

Air Force is quite good at defending on 1st downs and limiting big plays. UW’s 35.2% 3rd-down conversion rate ranks 11th in the MWC.

There is also the risk of the Falcons falling behind, too, and it isn’t exactly built for playing catch-up, with a primarily ground-based attack. That makes the Falcons even more risky that some others at a high price like this.

Against the spread

AIR FORCE -10.5 (-105) is the lean, but go very lightly.

By the way, isn’t it ironic that a team named Air Force primarily keeps the ball on the ground, rarely going to the air? It has just 55.3 passing yards per game, while leading the nation with 340.5 rushing yards per contest.

Defensively, Air Force has been stout, too, allowing very little on the ground or in the air, and that’s not what San Diego State +10.5 (-115) needs as it tries to snap a 3-game skid.

Over/Under

UNDER 42.5 (-110) is a rather low number for this day and age of college football, but Saturday’s game will be more old school, and won’t resemble a video game.

Air Force has a bruising rushing attack, and running the ball keeps the clock moving. The fact that the clock isn’t stopped for 1st downs aids Under bettors even more, especially in games featuring the Falcons.

The Aztecs also have a methodical, lumbering offensive attack, and not a quick strike offense. As such, the Under is the best play in this Mountain West showdown.

Against the spread
