Several Texas targets, former players react to Texas A&M losing DC Mike Elko

Former Texas players and current commits have certainly been doing their part recently.

With the early signing period less than a week away, coaching changes typically have a major impact on whether recruits choose to sign in December, or instead wait until February to re-examine their options. Former Notre Dame assistant a Florida possibility?

Will this former Notre Dame assistant soon be a head coach?

In a shocking turn of events from the end of September when Florida was 3-1 with their only blemish being a two-point loss against mighty Alabama, the Gators went just 2-5 since and fired Dan Mullen before their regular season finale against Florida State this week.

Where does Florida now turn for their next head coach?

Adam Dubbin of Gators Wire has put together a list of candidates for Florida to pursue and on it is a recent Notre Dame assistant and current Texas A&M defensive coordinator, Mike Elko.

Says Dubbin of Elko:

Jimbo Fisher made a big splash when he got Elko, the defensive coordinator at Notre Dame, to follow him to College Station in 2018. Elko, 44, is considered one of the up-and-coming coaches in college football, and given the fact that he is leading his best defense, which ranks in the top 10, expect his name to come up quite a bit during the coaching carousel this offseason.

Elko is a good coach and could be a candidate for jobs like TCU, but given the importance of this hire for UF, it seems unlikely it chooses to go with a first-time head coach.

I’m with Adam in that line of thinking.  I also remember the last time Florida hired a defensive coordinator from a Texas program who didn’t have any head coach experience and I can’t imagine doing that again would go over too well in Gator country.

Dolphins take offensive lineman in first round of CBS’ most recent mock draft

The Dolphins will certainly be interested in beefing up their line in the draft.

The Miami Dolphins have struggled mightily nine weeks into the 2021 season. That’s obvious.

How bad have they been? So bad that three of their lineman (Liam Eichenberg, Austin Jackson, and Jesse Davis) are tied for the most pressures given up all season with 37 each.

There are some tweaks they can make this season, like potentially subbing Greg Little in for Jesse Davis, but, for the most part, this group is what it is this season. They will need to address the issues in the offseason.

With the Dolphins currently owning the 49ers’ first-round selection, they are projected to pick ninth at this point. CBS has the Dolphins targeting Texas A&M junior offensive lineman Kenyon Green in their most recent mock draft.

Green, at 6-foot-4 and 325 lbs, has spent time at both right tackle and left guard, the two positions that Miami is struggling with the most. If they are willing to move on from the Jackson experiment or willing to let Green slide in and be the right tackle, they could vastly improve the line.

Here’s what CBS’ Ryan Wilson had to say about the selection.

“Yes, the Dolphins have used a ton of draft capital in recent years on the offensive line but the unit still lacks cohesiveness. Assuming Tua Tagovailoa is the answer and the team doesn’t target a QB here, it makes sense to do whatever it takes to improve the O-line. Green can play either tackle or guard and he has the ability to be a Day 1 starter.”

The issue here would be if the talent covers up for an obvious coaching issue. Miami has had four offensive coaches in four years, and Lem Jeanpierre, who currently holds the position, has never been an offensive line coach before.

Miami should absolutely attack offensive line in the draft, but they also need to evaluate their coaching staff including positional coaches.

Texas A&M president releases statement on Texas, Oklahoma potentially joining the SEC

On Saturday, Texas A&M president M. Katherine Banks released a statement on TX/OU potentially joining the SEC.

The chaos continues.

As soon as news broke on Wednesday that Texas and Oklahoma were reportedly interested in joining the SEC, it was clear that Texas A&M was seemingly the one program that was not a fan of the move.

Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork hinted at the fact that the Aggies were unaware of the discussions between the SEC and the two Big 12 powerhouse programs, and even took it a step further to state that they hope to be the only school from the state of Texas in the SEC. Whether this is true or not, it’s clear that their opinion doesn’t carry much weight.

At this point, Texas and Oklahoma joining the SEC is imminent and an official announcement is expected to come in the next few weeks. It makes sense from an athletics and revenue standpoint, among many other benefits.

On Saturday, Texas A&M president M. Katherine Banks released a statement on the matter:

The last few days have been challenging in many ways, and I recognize that change in college athletics often is unsettling for those who love their institutions. Rest assured, the chancellor, our athletic director, and I, and everyone involved in this matter are focused solely on what is best for Texas A&M University. Since 2011, we have been a proud member of the best intercollegiate athletic conference in history and we look forward to continued success in our SEC partnership for many years to come.

No matter how you digest the statement, it’s clear that the program as a whole is not taking the Texas/Oklahoma news very well. Unfortunately for the Aggies, there isn’t much they can do to prevent it from happening.

For those wondering if Texas A&M would leave the SEC if Texas and Oklahoma were to join, Banks’ statement should have cleared that up when she stated that they’re looking forward to their continued SEC partnership for many years to come.

Jenkins’ Big Day Pushes Tide over Texas A&M

Jenkins had career-best three hits and six RBI to led the Alabama offense to an 11-3 defeat of Texas A&M.

The No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide entered the series against Texas A&M looking to bounce back following a tough road trip to Lexington last weekend, losing two of three in the series with Kentucky.

Led by an impressive day at the plate by senior Claire Jenkins, the Crimson Tide (27-4, 7-3 SEC) snapped their two-game losing streak in conference play, defeating Texas A&M (25-6, 4-3 SEC), 11-3 in game one of the weekend series.

Jenkins had career-best three hits and six RBI to led the Alabama offense, four of those RBI coming off a grand slam in the first inning.

Alexis Mack opened the Alabama half of the 1st inning with a bunt to the pitcher, which she beat out for an infield single. KB Sides would walk and Bailey Hemphill was hit by a pitch in the two following at-bats, setting up Kaylee Tow with an opportunity to give Alabama the early lead. Tow picked up an RBI single that gave the Tide a 1-0 lead and would leave the bases loaded for Jenkins. Jenkins then crushed the 2nd pitch of the at-bat over the left field wall to give Alabama the 5-0 lead before the first out was recorded.

The Cullman native would strike again in the 5th inning on a double, scoring Sides and Hemphill during Alabama’s three-run inning that put the run-rule into effect, ultimately leading the Tide to victory.

Elissa Brown had two hits for Alabama, while Bailey Hemphill had two RBI. Lexy Kilfoyl had a great day in the circle, allowing five hits while striking out eight in a complete-game effort.

Game two of the series with Texas A&M is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT on Friday at Rhodes Stadium in Tuscaloosa. Saturday’s series finale will begin at 11 a.m. CT, and will be televised by SEC Network.

Chiefs scouts attended two SEC games this weekend

Kansas City Chiefs scouts were witness to two pivotal matchups in the SEC.

The Kansas City Chiefs scouts are already hard at work on the 2021 NFL Draft. The draft is still months away, but preparation is key. This will be a make or break draft for the future of this team as they face a limited salary cap in 2021 and many free agents this upcoming offseason.

Kansas City had scouts in attendance for two big college football games in the SEC this past weekend. It’s one of the conferences that has historically turned out the most NFL talent. Also, of note, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach used to be a scout responsible for covering the SEC for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the NCAA and NFL are doing things a little differently when it comes to credentials for games. Instead of teams applying for scouting credentials to a specific game, credentials are assigned via a lottery system. No more than seven teams are allowed to attend a specific game. In the past, some of the most pivotal SEC matchups have drawn 20 or more scouts from around the NFL.

According to NFL.com reporter Chase Goodbread, the Chiefs were awarded credentials to have scouts attend Florida at Texas A&M and Alabama at Mississippi, both pivotal matchups within the SEC.

Texas A&M notched an upset victory over No. 4 ranked Florida. Meanwhile, Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide notched a win over his former pupil, Lane Kiffin, who is in his first season as the head coach at Ole Miss.

Here’s a look at the top draft-eligible prospects from each school:

Texas A&M

  • QB Kellen Mond
  • WR Caleb Chapman
  • LB Buddy Johnson
  • DT Jayden Peevy

Florida

  • QB Kyle Trask
  • TE Kyle Pitts
  • WR Kadarius Toney
  • DB Shawn Davis
  • CB Marco Wilson

Alabama

  • RB Najee Harris
  • WR DeVonta Smith
  • WR Jaylen Waddle
  • LB Dylan Moses
  • CB Patrick Surtain II

Ole Miss

  • TE Kenny Yeboah
  • WR Elijah Moore
  • DE Sam Williams
  • LB MoMo Sanogo

Certainly, there are a ton of talented players from this group that could improve this team moving forward. Chiefs scouts will be back at it this upcoming weekend as they also received lottery-assigned credentials for Alabama-Georgia, the No. 2 and No. 3 ranked teams respectively.

Halftime report: Alabama vs. Texas A&M

Alabama finishes the first half of their Week 2 contest vs. Texas A&M with a strong showing by Mac Jones and a shaky start by the defense.

The Alabama crimson Tide lead the Texas A&M Aggies 35-14 heading into halftime during SEC’s second week of action.

In Alabama’s home opener, Mac Jones got his second start of the season and wasted no time trying to get ahead of the tough Aggie defense with a 78-yard touchdown pass to redshirt-freshman wide receiver John Metchie III.

Overall, Jones threw for 271 yards on 15 completions through 19 attempts and one interception in the first half. The sole interception set up a one-play series for Kellen Mond and Texas A&M that resulted in a quick 17-yard touchdown.

The pass catchers combined for 273 yards and two touchdowns in the half. With Metchie (118 yds), Smith (51 yds) and Waddle (55 yds) being the only true wide receivers to reel in receptions.

Najee Harris continues to be the offensive spark for Alabama, running for 36 yards on 10 carries for two touchdowns.

The defense has not yet found consistency in 2020. They allowed 148 passing yards, 71 rushing yards and two passing touchdowns. However, Daniel Wright did return an interception 48 yards for a touchdown late in the first half to extend the Alabama lead

While Mond was able to find success through the air with 11 completions on 22 passing attempts for 148 yards, two touchdown passes and a lone interception, the combined rushing attack by Isaiah Spiller, Ainias Smith and Mond, Himself, could become an issue for the Alabama defensive front in the second half. The three of them have combined for 16 carries for 71 yards.

Roll Tide Wire will keep you updated on all things Alabama football as the second half kicks off.
