49ers a perfect landing spot for one of NFL draft’s youngest players

On the way to earning All-SEC first team honors, the Texas A&M pass rusher recorded five sacks during his only season in College Station.

As the draft season begins to heat up, a new rookie edge rusher prospect opposite of Nick Bosa has been a fairly popular choice in multiple mock drafts with the No. 11 overall selection in the 2025 NFL draft,

Offensive line and defensive line have been popular candidates for the 49ers in mock drafts early in the offseason. In the latest mock draft from Pro Football Network, another standout pass-rushing prospect landed with the 49ers at No. 11.

At No. 11, Pro Football Network penned Texas A&M edge rusher Nic Scourton to the 49ers. According to Dalton Miller of PFN, Scourton’s plan as a pass rusher is “artwork.”

Via PFN:

Nic Scourton isn’t perfect, but nobody else in this class possesses his blend of technical prowess, bend, size, and power. He’s playing too heavy right now, but losing the unnecessary weight he’s currently carrying on his frame should only make him more dangerous as an arc rusher.

Scourton’s pass-rush plan is artwork, and the suddenness and fluidity he already plays with at 280 is terrifying. He’ll be one of the youngest players in the class while already possessing nuance far beyond his years.

Scourton’s naturally thick lower half makes him a sturdy edge setter, and there’s a chance he’ll continue growing into his frame while building a more consistent power element to his game.

Read the full PFN 7-round mock draft here.

Following two seasons at Purdue, including a career-best 10-sack season in 2023 for the Boilermakers, Scourton transferred to College Station in 2024. Scourton thrived in the SEC, recording five sacks to go along with 37 tackles and 14 tackles for loss in 12 games for the Aggies. Scourton earned All-SEC first-team honors before declaring for the 2025 NFL draft.

Scourton will just be turning 21 years old before the 2025 NFL season begins, giving the 49ers a young player with immense potential to develop across from Bosa in San Francisco’s pass rush.

The first round of the 2025 NFL draft will begin on Thursday, April 24 in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Photo Gallery: Alabama basketball takes down Texas A&M for huge SEC road win

Alabama survived the Aggies for their first win in College Station since 2015. Here are the best photos from the Crimson Tide’s victory Saturday night.

The Alabama Crimson Tide went to College Station and earned an impressive — if not perfect — 94-88 victory over the Texas A&M Aggies in a Top 10 matchup at Reed Arena on Saturday night.

No. 5 Alabama’s first win at A&M since the end of the 2015 regular season was marred by whistle after whistle. Referee Don Daily’s crew called a total of 58 fouls in a game that saw the Crimson Tide take a 15-point lead in the second half and then have to hold on in the final two minutes as No. 9 A&M cut the lead to three with 1:27 to play.

Alabama survived by making six straight free throws in the final 36 seconds to close out their eighth straight victory.

Mark Sears led all scorers with a game-high 27 points, hitting seven of 18 shots from the field and going 4-of-10 from downtown. Sears’ first basket of the night didn’t come until 6:30 to play in the first half, a 3-pointer that gave Alabama its first double-digit lead at 35-25.

The Tide led 52-44 at halftime, making 10 3-pointers in the first half with Sears totaling three and Chris Youngblood and Aden Holloway adding a pair. Holloway finished the night with 15 points, and Youngblood added 14 as Nate Oats’ bench scored 40 points.

Alabama (14-2 overall, 3-0 SEC) remained undefeated in SEC play and will host the Ole Miss Rebels (14-2, 3-0) at Coleman Coliseum Tuesday. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on ESPNU.

Here are some of the best photos from Alabama basketball’s first win in College Station in 10 years.

ESPN assigns top broadcast crew to Alabama-Texas A&M Top 10 showdown

ESPN is sending one of its most well-known college basketball voices to College Station for Alabama’s next game.

The Alabama Crimson Tide are set to face the Texas A&M Aggies in a top 10 matchup Saturday night in College Station.

The Crimson Tide (13-2 overall, 2-0 SEC) and Aggies (13-2, 2-0) are set to tip off at 7 p.m. CT at Reed Arena. The game can be seen on ESPN.

Alabama is ranked No. 5 in this week’s USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 poll. Texas A&M is ranked No. 9.

Earlier this week, ESPN announced its commentator assignments for college basketball games scheduled to be broadcast on its family of channels. The duo of Dave O’Brien (play-by-play) and Cory Alexander (analyst) will have the call of Alabama vs. Texas A&M.

It’s the first time this season that O’Brien will call an Alabama game. His work, which dates back to ESPN beginning in 2002, includes a variety of marquee college basketball games, as well as Major League Baseball and NBA games for ESPN TV and ESPN Radio. Additionally, O’Brien is the lead play-by-play voice of the Boston Red Sox for the team-owned New England Sports Network (NESN).

Alexander joined ESPN in 2009. He played four years for the Virginia Cavaliers from 1991-92 through 1994-95 and spent seven seasons in the NBA. Alexander was a first-round draft pick (No. 29 overall) by the San Antonio Spurs in the 1995 NBA Draft.

Alabama defeated South Carolina, 88-68, on Wednesday night in Columbia behind 22 points from Mark Sears. Aden Holloway had 13 points for the Crimson Tide off the bench, and Clifford Omoruyi added 10 as Alabama won its seventh straight game.

Texas A&M came from behind to defeat Oklahoma, 80-78, Wednesday night in Norman behind a career-high 34 points from senior Zhuric Phelps. The Aggies rallied from an 18-point deficit at one point in the second half to win their ninth straight game.

Drew Brees explains sideline exchange with Johnny Manziel at Texas-Texas A&M

Drew Brees was spotted shaking hands with Johnny Manziel before kickoff between Texas and Texas A&M. He says he ‘always wanted to be an Aggie’

The stars were out for last weekend’s rivalry game between the Texas Longhorns and Texas A&M Aggies. And they weren’t limited to just famous alumni like Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel. Former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees made the trip to Kyle Field, too, and his presence there didn’t go unnoticed.

There were dozens of cameras on hand for the high-profile matchup, and one of them caught an exchange between Brees and Manziel prior to kickoff, which he spoke about on “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd this week.

“I always wanted to be an Aggie,” Brees had laughed, shaking hands with Manziel. Brees, of course, was a college football star at Purdue — and before that, he achieved a sensational career at Austin Westlake High School. As a Texas native, would have stayed in-state if given the chance. But why the affinity for Texas A&M?

“So both my parents went to Texas A&M,” Brees began. “And I grew up in Austin, Texas which ironically the University of Texas was right down the road. I used to walk down to Memorial Stadium and buy scalp tickets in the cheap seats there to watch UT play back in the early Nineties. I loved Texas A&M but I was kind of outsider in Austin being an Aggie fan.”

Had he gotten his way, Brees says, he would’ve relished the opportunity to bring his parents’ alma mater into the modern age.

“A&M always had the reputation as being a hardnosed football program. Great defensive linemen, great linebackers, defensive ends, running backs and tight ends. They certainly weren’t known for their quarterbacks and passing game. I always wanted to be that guy to bring A&M into the next generation with their evolution of the passing game,” Brees grinned.

Instead, Brees went out of state to write a different story in his football life. He earned Heisman Trophy votes himself (finishing fourth in 1999 and third in 2000) while airing it out with the Boilermakers, which helped him get drafted highly after turning pro. The skills he developed there bore fruit when he joined the Saints in 2006, and the rest is history.

Brees continued: “Unfortunately I wasn’t offered by them and had to go out of state to Purdue. It’s funny because I tell people now it’s the best thing that ever happened to me. I would’ve been handing the ball off to you know, Dante Hall and some of these other guys at Texas A&M, instead I got to go up and play for Joe Tiller at Purdue and throw the ball 50 times a game. So I think it worked out okay.”

Decades later, Brees has a Super Bowl ring, dozens of NFL records in his name, and a spot waiting for him at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. That’s a career anyone can be proud of, though some Aggies fans may be left wondering about what may have been.

Saints among 10 teams with scouts at Texas A&M vs. Missouri

The New Orleans Saints were among 10 teams with scouts at Texas A&M’s game with Missouri on Saturday. Who could they have been scouting?

There’s always a strong contingent of NFL scouts at Kyle Field, but the New Orleans Saints were in that number for Saturday’s matchup between Texas A&M and Missouri, per Joey Van Zummeren at Missouri Tigers on SI. Which 2025 draft prospects could the Saints have their eye on?

Defensive end/outside linebacker Nic Scourton is the top prospect for the Aggies, and he has the size the Saints covet at a listed 6-foot-4 and 285 pounds. Before transferring from Purdue he led the Big 10 in sacks (10) in 2023, and he’s seen as a sure thing for the first round. His teammates along the defensive interior, Shemar Stewart and Shemar Turner, are also likely to be picked early next year, and quarterback Conner Weigman is high on some draft boards, too.

But the best prospect in the game was wide receiver Luther Burden. A potential first overall pick in his own right, Burden broke out with 85 receptions for 1,212 yards and scored 9 touchdowns last year, and he’s since picked up where he left off with four scores in as many games. Right tackle  Armand Membou has an NFL future, too, and his matchup with Scourton could do a lot to impact his draft stock.

Texas A&M earns another top-25 finish in the Learfield Directors Cup

Texas A&M Athletics keeps streak alive as they finish in the top-25 for 17th consecutive year

For the 17th consecutive year, Texas A&M has made the top-25 in the LEARFIELD Director’s Cup. So, what is the Directors Cup? Great question. The Directors Cup itself is an award given out based on points awarded to each institution depending on where they finish in the NCAA Championships.

It’s the brainchild of The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today with LEARFIELD being the title sponsor of the award, you can read more about them at the bottom of the article.

A fun fact about the NACDA is that Texas A&M Athletic Director Ross Bjock is currently serving as the 2nd Vice President and had to say this about the ranking

“The mission of Texas A&M Athletics is to create opportunities through championship athletics and I’m extremely proud of the hard work by our student-athletes, coaches and staff throughout the 2022-23 school year,” Director of Athletics Ross Bjork said. “It was gratifying to see the women’s tennis and women’s golf teams win SEC Championships, men’s basketball and baseball play in SEC Championship games, and three teams finish in the top five nationally.  While we are constantly pushing for more consistent success at the highest level, seventeen straight years in the top 25 of the LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup is an amazing run of consistency, and I’m certain that greater years are in our future.”

The Aggies finish the year at number 24 nationally and number 8 in the SEC while racking up 808.75 points on the season. Their best finish came in 2012-2013 placing number 5 with 1131.1 points. The SEC led all Division I schools with eight total teams in the top-25, but Stanford took the top spot with 1412 total points. Here are a few other noteworthy finishes Texas (2nd), LSU (9th), Alabama (12th), and Oklahoma (23rd).

There is currently an abundance of talent across Aggie Athletics this coming into a year of growth and experience that I believe will propel them back into the top ten in the final standings next year.

Texas A&M’s new Football Indoor Performance Center will be complete by fall camp

Texas A&M AD Ross Bjork answered questions from the fans and gave an encouraging update on the status of the new performance center.

Texas A&M continues to renovate its athletics department to maintain its status as a premier facility among the SEC ranks. Ross Bjork answered on the Yell & Review that multiple facilities that are part of the Centennial Campaign will be completed over the next year.

Below is what Bjork told the audience when highlighting the progress of the indoor football center.

“The indoor performance center, that’ll be done by the 1st of August in time for training camp” he said. “The Slocum-Bright Football complex, this year we’re only renovating the second floor. We moved out nutrition, we moved out academics. The second floor is going to be all of our individual breakout rooms for positions–quarterback, offensive line, all the different position rooms. We’ll have an individual team meeting room for offense and another team meeting room for defense, and then we’ll have a walk-through room for offense and defense that’ll attach to all of those breakout rooms. That has to be done by the 1st of August. We report on August 1st and start practice on August 2nd.”

The new 160-yard Football Indoor Performance Center will be integral to the changing landscape of college recruiting and wellness. In the age of NIL and a very active transfer portal getting an athlete on campus is only a third of the battle, while the other two-thirds keep them on campus after year one. Outside of playing time and championships, modern facilities go a long way in helping keep players around or to bring in transfers looking to play in the SEC. Here are the highlights of the new performance center:

  • 160-yard practice field
  • Elevated observation area
  • Dedicated space for sports medicine and strength & conditioning
  • Direct access to the Bright Football Complex and Coolidge Outdoor Practice Fields
  • Outdoor plaza facing Kyle Field

The school might be out, but plenty of business is happening at the University this summer. You can visit the official website for more information about the Centennial Campaign.

Notre Dame football: Should Irish be worried about prized QB recruit C.J. Carr?

On a scale of 1-10, how worried are you about CJ Carr potentially looking elsewhere?

Before leaving Notre Dame for Alabama, one thing former Irish offensive coordinator [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag] did was improve the talent in the quarterback room through recruiting. He helped land commitments from [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag] and [autotag]Kenny Minchey[/autotag] in recent classes, as well as from transfer quarterback [autotag]Sam Hartman[/autotag].

The future for Notre Dame at the position however appears to have the potential to be as high as the career as 2024 quarterback [autotag]C.J. Carr[/autotag]. Carr, the grandson of (0.5) national championship Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr, committed to the Irish late last summer.  He has the highest recruiting ranking of any Notre Dame quarterback since 2015 (247Sports).

Could Carr be looking to take his talents elsewhere, though?

Technically, yes. But also no. I know that’s more than a bit confusing to read so work with me here.

According to Landyn Rosow of Rivals, Carr is going to visit Texas A&M this weekend.

Top 20 Recruit in 2024 CJ Carr (ND commit) will be visiting Texas A&M this weekend. #GigEm

What isn’t mentioned in Rosow’s tweet is that Carr’s 7-on-7 team is competing at Texas A&M this weekend, which is why he’ll be visiting the College Station campus. Just like he did recently when participating with the same team near the University of Washington.

Based off how aggressively Texas A&M approaches name, image and likeness issues they’re certainly a program that strikes a bit of fear when you hear they’re hosting a player. But again, context is everything here.

Carr declared to On3 that he was still locked in on his Notre Dame commitment shortly after Rees departed. If we’re to believe Carr (and what has he done to date to make anyone feel otherwise?) then Notre Dame shouldn’t have much to worry about here.

That’s not to say they don’t still have to make Carr feel special themselves, but that’s just the world of recruiting. I hate the difficulty in the task of trying to get in the mind of a 16 or 17 year old kid, but in order to know the answer that’s what one has to do.

Based off what we know and have heard from Carr, this certainly feels like a big to-do over what seems like a whole lot of nothing.

Now let’s just hope for the sake of the future of Notre Dame at quarterback it stays that way.

Check out a few highlights of Carr and why Notre Dame fans are so excited about him below!

Twitter reacts to Alabama’s 3-play, 75-yard TD drive

Alabama answers quickly and fans loved it!

Top-ranked Alabama hosts Texas A&M in a game that is riddled with storylines. Despite the Aggies entering the game unranked with all playoff hopes out the window, it’s important for the Crimson Tide to walk away with a win in order to maintain the top seed in the SEC West.

The Crimson Tide struck first with a 10-yard touchdown from Jalen Milroe to Cameron Latu. The Aggies then responded after forcing a Milroe fumble. Alabama answered quickly with a three-play, 75-yard drive to take the lead back.

The most recent Crimson Tide touchdown came on a pass from Milroe into the hands of wide receiver Jermain Burton, who then evaded defenders to walk into the end zone.

ESPN College GameDay crew picks winner in Alabama vs. Texas A&M

See who the GameDay Crew thinks will come out on top in this big-time revenge game for the Crimson Tide!

Alabama football welcomes in Texas A&M in a Week 6 SEC showdown circled on many fans’ calendars over the last few months.

Though it was originally thought to be a fight for the top spot in the SEC West with playoff implications and a battle between to feuding coaches, it has turned into anything but.

The Aggies rank No. 5 in the SEC West, have suffered two losses and are currently unranked. Jimbo Fisher’s job security has also raised a few questions, which means his focus is no longer on Nick Saban and his opinion on the name, image, likeness (NIL) policy.

ESPN’s College GameDay crew broadcasted live from Lawrence, Kansas ahead of the Kansas vs. TCU Big-12 matchup.

It was unanimous when it came down to picking between the Aggies and the Crimson Tide: Alabama takes it.
