What Chiefs are getting in new DB Adrian Colbert in 3 plays

Three plays that describe the type of player the Kansas City Chiefs are getting with Adrian Colbert.

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to add a new safety to the mix, agreeing to sign DB Adrian Colbert once he passes his mandatory COVID-19 screening. The team seems to want to add some more competition to the mix at the safety position, even with Juan Thornhill returning to practice for Kansas City.

It’s crucial for the Chiefs to have three safeties that can play on the field together in their big nickel package. They utilized it often last year, even late in the year after Thornhill had suffered his knee injury. It’s also important that Kansas City has enough bodies at training camp. With the amount of passing they do, safeties are doing a lot of running in practice and guys can get worn down quickly.

Here’s a look at three plays that show what exactly the Chiefs are getting in their newest player:

Good instincts

This is one of my favorite plays from Colbert because he wasn’t even credited for an assist on the play, but he absolutely makes the play happen. He’s lined up as the single-high safety — No. 36 for the Dolphins — the furthest from the play. He’s the last line of defense for his team.

You’ll notice that Bengals RB Joe Mixon gets every defender moving to their right, but Colbert sees what is about to happen. Mixon cuts it back and the defensive end loses backside contain. Instead of waiting for Mixon to come to him, Colbert crashes down and fills. Now Colbert misses the tackle, over-running the play slightly, but he also forced Mixon back inside where there are a number of friendly jersey’s ready to wrap him up.

It’s not perfectly executed, but the end result is a one-yard gain for the Bengals when it could have been much more. It came down to a good heads-up play by Colbert and an attacking mentality from the safety. That type of mentality and awareness will mesh well with the group that Kansas City currently has at the safety position.

Report: Chiefs to sign former Dolphins DB Adrian Colbert

A new safety coming soon to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs plan to make a roster move once a player completes his mandatory COVID-19 screening.

According to Yahoo Sports reporter Terez Paylor, the Chiefs will sign former Miami Dolphins defensive back Adrian Colbert. The 26-year-old safety was a seventh-round draft pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 out of the University of Miami, where he’d transferred after playing his first three seasons at the University of Texas.

Colbert appeared in six games and started five games for the Dolphins last season, playing 361 defensive snaps for the team. The team had tendered him a restricted free agent contract, but numerous additions at the position through free agency and the draft made Colbert expendable. They released him just two days ago.

Over the course of his career, Colbert has started in 17 games, recording 80 total tackles, two forced fumbles and eight passes defended. He hasn’t yet recorded an interception since he’s been in the NFL, but he did have two interceptions in college.

Colbert is listed at 6-foot and 200 pounds and runs in the 4.5-range. He has experience playing in the box and playing the deep safety spot. He’s not the rangiest safety out there, but he’s a big hitter and takes good angles to the football.

Chiefs starting safety Juan Thornhill is on the PUP list currently. If he remains on the PUP list to start the regular season, the earliest he could make his return is in Week 7. They recently added Tedric Thompson, but it seems they want to drum up more competition at that position group for the remainder of training camp.

Miami Dolphins waive two on the eve of first padded practices

Miami Dolphins waive two on the eve of first padded practices

While the Miami Dolphins will be strapping on the pads for the first time this year today, two players who have been working with the team this summer will not be — as the Dolphins announce a few last minute cuts before the team takes the field for their first padded practices. The Miami Dolphins announced yesterday that they have waived veteran safety Adrian Colbert and offensive tackle Nick Kaltmayer.

The rumblings of Colbert being on uneven footing with the team arose late last week and indeed Miami has trimmed another 2019 contributor from the defensive backfield from the roster — the Dolphins will have effectively revamped the depth in the secondary with names like Clayton Fejedelem, Brandon Jones and Kavon Frazier.

The departure of Kaltmayer is less surprising, as the Dolphins feature several potential starters who can play both guard and tackle and two top-40 picks at the tackle position in Austin Jackson and Robert Hunt. Kaltmayer, who played at Kansas State and went undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft, will have to hope a team with less options at the tackle position will gravitate towards his size and length if he’s going to latch on to a roster for the 2020 NFL season.

Miami may not have answers at the tackle spots just yet, but they have plenty of options and plenty of depth, which made the UDFA expendable.

Report: Dolphins plan to waive safety Adrian Colbert

Everyone knew entering the 2019 season that the year would be an “evaluation year” for the Miami Dolphins. The team was effectively starting from scratch and, with the luxury of time and job security on their side, the Dolphins were intent to use the games on the schedule to find the right long-term pieces for the vision shared by GM Chris Grier and coach Brian Flores.

And now that we’re a full year removed from that evaluation window, the Dolphins are starting to make the personnel decisions that seem to reflect what the 2019 season told them. First came the surprising cut of safety Steven Parker, who played significant snaps for the Dolphins last season. Those significant snaps weren’t necessarily bad — but the Dolphins appear to have other plans for the back end of the defense.

Now, a report from Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald indicates another prominent contributor from 2019 may be on the outs: safety Adrian Colbert.

Colbert played in 6 games (starting 5) and played a total of 361 defensive snaps for the Dolphins last season and had apparently done enough to warrant another year with the team — the Dolphins tendered Colbert as a restricted free agent this spring and signed him to a one-year deal worth in excess of $1M. Colbert’s presence didn’t prevent the team from adding free agent Clayton Fejedelem and Kavon Frazier at the position, sturdy backups with special teams appeal, nor did he prevent the team from drafting Brandon Jones in the early 3rd-round in April’s 2020 NFL Draft. Jones is expected to fill a “Patrick Chung-role” for the Dolphins’ defense, complementing the man-coverage ability of Eric Rowe (strong safety) and Bobby McCain (free safety).

With the team claiming former Auburn defensive back Jeremiah Dinson over the weekend, Salguero’s report indicates that Colbert may be the next odd man out — and that his play in 2019 was a big enough sample size for Miami to know that he’s not likely a long-term fit with the team.

Financially, Over The Cap indicates that cutting Colbert will save the Dolphins $700k against their salary cap this season — with $450k in dead cap. The Dolphins have not announced this transaction yet, but the report from Salguero indicates it may be the next corresponding move as the Dolphins continue to churn their defensive backfield.

Seahawks activate tight end Ed Dickson, waive cornerback Jamar Taylor

The Seattle Seahawks made a long-awaited move on Wednesday, activating veteran tight end Ed Dickson off the injured reserve, a mere hours before the deadline that would have prevented him from playing all season.

In order to make room on the roster, the team waived nickel cornerback Jamar Taylor.

After clearing the 53-man roster, Dickson began the season on the injured reserve with a knee injury for the second year in a row. He returned last year and hauled in 12 receptions (on 13 targets) for 143 yards and three touchdowns – serving primarily as a run-blocker.

The Seahawks will certainly hope for more of the same from the veteran, who will be counted on in a big role following the season-ending injury to Will Dissly and the current hamstring injury that Luke Willson is battling.

Taylor struggled in Seattle’s last game against San Francisco out of the nickel position, and the recent performance of rookie Ugo Amadi may have prompted his release.

“He’s one of those guys that have been with us long enough, it’s time for him to get some more opportunities,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said regarding Amadi on Monday. “Still a great competitor for us on a number of positions for us for playtime. Coming off the break we have a chance to revisit some of that stuff so, if it fits with different positions, and guys, and individuals, we’re looking to take advantage of that.”

Taylor signed with Seattle this offseason, got cut, and signed back with the team after Week 1. He’s played in nine games this year, recording 20 combined tackles and three passes defended, but has struggled in pass coverage.

The Seahawks also added linebacker Pita Taumoepenu to the practice squad, taking the spot vacated by Adrian Colbert’s departure to Miami.

Taumoepenu was a sixth-round pick by the 49ers back in 2017. He spent training camp with the Cardinals but was waived/injured during roster cuts and eventually waived off the injured reserve in September.

Miami Dolphins sign free safety Adrian Colbert

The Miami Dolphins have signed Seattle Seahawks practice squad safety Adrian Colbert to the 53-man roster

The Miami Dolphins found themselves with an unexpected roster opening on Tuesday morning when the word broke that running back Mark Walton was involved in a domestic violence incident. The team deserves credit for swift, decisive action and not tolerating the abhorrent behavior Walton has been charged with, regardless of what his status is as a player with a problematic history.

And after making the decision to part ways with Walton, the Dolphins’ roster opening was quickly filled. Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad safety Adrian Colbert indicated on social media Tuesday night that he was headed to Miami, tagging the Dolphins.

He’s since officially been signed to the team and his presence is one that may actually offer the Dolphins with a reasonable return. The former Miami Hurricane played his best football as a rookie in the NFL during the 2017 NFL season with the San Francisco 49ers, where he totaled 37 tackles and 5 passes defensed in 14 games (6 starts). A high ankle sprain cut his 2018 season short and Colbert’s been bounced between the San Francisco and Seattle active rosters and practice squads ever since.

Colbert joins a secondary that has been stretched thin with injuries throughout the course of the season, but also has several long-term spots open on the roster. Colbert can now use Miami’s final 6 games as a tryout to look to convince the team that he can return to his positive play as a rookie with the 49ers and can serve as an asset for the Dolphins in 2020 and beyond.
