3 losses that especially hurt Seahawks in 2024

3 losses that especially hurt Seahawks in 2024

The Seattle Seahawks unfortunately won’t be playing for the NFC West division title against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 18. Seattle was officially eliminated from postseason contention following the Washington Commanders’ overtime victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday Night Football. Unfortunately, failing to make the postseason opens the Seahawks up to a period of reflection.

The 9-7 Seahawks could conclude the campaign tied with the division-winning Rams in the win column with a victory on Sunday. Regardless of Sunday’s outcome, that captures how painfully close Mike Macdonald was to achieving his goals in his debut campaign. With that in mind, we’ve identified three defeats that especially hindered the Seahawks throughout 2024.

Week 9: 26-20, Rams

It goes without saying that Seattle’s 26-20 defeat to the Rams in Week 9 ended up proving costly. Had Macdonald’s club defeated Sean McVay in their first meeting, they’d be playing for the division title on Sunday. The Rams took a 20-13 lead in the fourth quarter through a Geno Smith pick-six.

Smith recovered to locate Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a game-tying score. The Seahawks won the ensuing coin toss, but the drive stalled at LA’s 16-yard line. Instead of attempting a game-leading FG, Macdonald went for the jugular and Kenneth Walker III was stuffed on 4th-and-1. The Rams took over possession and quickly scored a touchdown via a 39-yard pass to DeMarcus Robinson.

Week 6: 36-24, 49ers

The Seahawks were dominated by the San Francisco 49ers in primetime, losing their sixth consecutive contest to their NFC West divisional foe at the time, 36-24. The Seahawks were outclassed by the 49ers in every department. Luckily, Smith and the offense recovered a few weeks later, putting their struggles behind them by beating their foe 20-17. Still, sweeping the series would have gone a long way.

Week 5: 29-20, Giants

Losing to the lowly New York Giants 29-20 in Week 5 was simply inexcusable. This represented the roughest patch of Seattle’s 2024 campaign, their second straight defeat in what’d prove to be a three-game losing streak and five defeats in six outings. The Giants dropped 10 consecutive contests following this victory, failing to taste triumph again until facing the Indianapolis Colts this past weekend.

Chiefs CB Trent McDuffie praises teammates through demanding schedule: ‘We just stuck together’

Kansas City #Chiefs CB Trent McDuffie praises teammates through demanding schedule: ‘We just stuck together’ | @EdEastonJr

Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie and the defense had another excellent performance in their Christmas Day victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. During his postgame press conference on Wednesday, he appreciated the coaching staff and his teammates’ efforts during the unique short turnaround schedule.

“It was tough, mentally, physically, there’s a lot of strain, especially these past two days, trying to travel here and figure out what the team’s doing,” said McDuffie. “Who’s playing, doing this, all the injuries, as you saw today. I mean, a lot of guys came in, stepping in and out. And I mean, it was tough; three games in 11 days is crazy for anybody. I thought we handled it very well. I think the coaches did a good job at physically helping us out and giving us a little more time mentally to do things, but shout out to these guys.”

McDuffie recorded the first two interceptions of his career, and the defense shut down opponents throughout the three-game stretch.

“Every player in there rallied around each other, we knew we were getting into we knew the dog fight that was happening, and we just stuck together,” said McDuffie. “I think the biggest thing coming out of this was that everybody was on the same page, and nobody held their heads down. Nobody said, this is hard. Nobody complained. It was like, let’s go out there and win.”

The unusual Chiefs schedule could’ve been used as an excuse for the team to fall apart during the three-game stretch, but instead, it has brought them closer together.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes comments on unique playing schedule: ‘It’s not a good feeling’

Kansas City #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes comments on unique playing schedule: ‘It’s not a good feeling’ | @EdEastonJr

The journey to a possible three-peat approaches its most strenuous period, beginning this Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. The Kansas City Chiefs will face the unenviable task of playing three games in a short time frame, including Christmas Day.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes isn’t too thrilled about the situation, as he told reporters on Wednesday during his press conference.

“It’s not a good feeling,” said Mahomes. “You never want to play this amount of games in this short of time. It’s not great for your body. But at the end of the day, it’s your job, your profession; you have to come to work and do it.”

The Chiefs will return home to play the Houston Texans in Week 16 on Saturday, followed by the Christmas Day game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday.

“All you can do is focus on the game. The practice you have that day, I try to prepare my body all year long for this stretch,” said Mahomes. “That’s tailoring my workouts, tailoring how you practice and prepare, and the coaches do a great job of taking care of us on the practice field. We practice as hard as anybody, but they know how to dial it back when needed.”

The Chiefs control their destiny with the opportunity to clinch home field and a bye in the postseason as they battle the harsh playing conditions.

Penn State football schedule: Is Penn State playing today?

Is Penn State playing today? Here’s a look at the schedule and the games to come.

Will the Penn State be on the field today in Week 9 of the college football schedule? You bet they are!

Penn State is back in action this week after getting a week off following its thrilling road win at USC two weeks ago. Penn State faces another challenge in Big Ten play on Saturday when it visits Wisconsin for a primetime matchup in Camp Randal Stadium.

Penn State came from behind with a big second-half performance and a record day from tight end Tyler Warren to beat USC in overtime. Slow starts have been popping up for Penn State this season, and they will hope to overcome that Saturday night against a Wisconsin team that has been dominant in recent weeks against lower-tier competition.

This is the start of a key three-game stretch for Penn State. Ranked third in the national polls coming into the week, and likely firmly in a College Football Playoff position, the Nittany Lions travel to a tough environment Saturday night at Wisconsin and then host Ohio State next week. Following that is a home game against new Big Ten member Washington before the schedule likely gets much easier to close out the season, although it would be unwise to look past an upcoming road trip to Minnesota. Just ask USC.

Here is a look at Penn State’s remaining schedule, beginning with Saturday night’s showdown in Madison, Wisconsin.

Penn State 2024 schedule

  • Aug. 31 at West Virginia (W, 34-12)
  • Sep. 7 vs. Bowling Green (W, 34-27)
  • Sep. 21 vs. Kent State (W, 56-0)
  • Sep. 28 vs. Illinois (W, 21-7)
  • Oct. 5 vs. UCLA (W 27-11)
  • Oct. 12 at USC (W 33-30 OT)
  • Oct. 26 at Wisconsin
  • Nov. 2 vs. Ohio State
  • Nov. 9 vs. Washington
  • Nov. 16 at Purdue
  • Nov. 23 at Minnesota
  • Nov. 30 vs. Maryland

Predicting every game on Patriots’ 2024 schedule

What record will the Patriots finish with in 2024?

The New England Patriots will kick-start the 2024 season with a road showdown with the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

It’s the first game on a hellacious schedule that pits the new-look Patriots team against a bevy of future playoff contenders. The lack of enthusiasm regarding regular-season wins has more to do with the opponents than anything else.

Sure, the offense isn’t completely up to speed, but Jacoby Brissett is more than serviceable as a starting quarterback. The Patriots are live underdogs in most games if they lean on their defense and avoid costly penalties and turnovers.

There’s hope for a brighter future when rookie quarterback Drake Maye gets going, but we’re going to look at this schedule with the expectation that Brissett will be in the driver’s seat for the entire season.

Here’s a prediction for every game on the schedule:

Week Date Opponent Time (ET) Prediction (W/L)
1 Sept. 8 at Bengals 1:00 p.m. L
2 Sept. 15 vs. Seahawks 1:00 p.m. W
3 *Sept. 19 at Jets 8:15 p.m. L
4 Sept. 29 at 49ers 4:05 p.m. L
5 Oct. 6 vs. Dolphins 1:00 p.m. L
6 Oct. 13 vs. Texans 1:00 p.m. L
7 Oct. 20 at Jaguars 9:30 a.m. W
8 Oct. 27 vs. Jets 1:00 p.m. L
9 Nov. 3 at Titans 1:00 p.m. W
10 Nov. 10 at Bears 1:00 p.m. L
11 Nov. 17 vs. Rams 1:00 p.m. L
12 Nov. 24 at Dolphins 1:00 p.m. L
13 Dec. 1 vs. Colts 1:00 p.m. W
14 BYE
15 Dec. 15 at Cardinals 4:25 p.m. W
16 Dec. 22 at Bills 1:00 p.m. L
17 TBD vs. Chargers TBD L
18 TBD vs. Bills TBD W (6-11 record)

*prime-time game

I have the Patriots winning six games, which is an obvious improvement over their 4-13 finish last season.

The team will struggle right out of the gates, but there’s a chance they could steal a few wins along the way. They could be better than some think given the talent on defense and improvements at receiver.

Granted, they still need a true No. 1 receiver, but the additions of Ja’Lynn Polk and K.J. Osborn, along with another year of growth from DeMario Douglas, should be enough to keep things interesting.

This season will represent a step in the right direction for New England and hopefully bring about the future change fans are patiently waiting for.

Why Texans LB Christian Harris will start 2024 season on the injured reserve

Christian Harris will play for the Houston Texans in 2024, though it might not come until early October.

Christian Harris will play for the Houston Texans in 2024. It just won’t be against the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 8 at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Texans are placing the third-year linebacker and veteran defensive tackle Kurt Hinish on the short-term injured reserve to begin the season. Neither will count against the roster and both will be eligible to return after four weeks.

Hinish left early with an injury in Saturday’s 17-15 win over the Los Angeles Rams. Harris, who had been dealing with a strained calf since the start of training camp, returned to practice two weeks ago but reaggravated the muscle the same day.

The Texans believe Harris could be in for a breakout year similar to All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner. A former third-round pick out of BYU, Warner went from a quality starter to a consistent standout in Year 2 under DeMeco Ryans’ teaching.

In Year 3, Warner became one of the top linebackers in the NFL, earning All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl nod in 2020. Harris might not be able to jump to that level this fall, but he flashed the potential as a rising star late last year to help Houston secure its first division title since 2019.

Harris is coming off his best NFL season after recording a career-high 101 tackles and two sacks. In the wild-card round victory over the Cleveland Browns, Harris made the play of his career with a 36-yard interception returned for a touchdown against Joe Flacco to extend Houston’s lead by 24.

In his place, the Texans will rely on a combination of Henry To’oTo’o and Jake Hansen next to veteran Azeez Al-Shaair. To’oTo’o, Harris’ former teammate at Alabama, has seen most first-team reps and looks more comfortable heading into his second season playing in space.

“Henry’s a dog,” safety Jalen Pitre said earlier this preseason. “He’s done nothing but show up every day with a relentless mindset ready to go to work and he’s bringing it when he gets there.

Henry is one of those guys that are going to hit you and let you know about it. So, I’m trying to get like Henry in that regard.”

The 2024 college football season is almost here, which means it is time to get ready to root for your Penn State Nittany Lions as they chase that elusive College Football Playoffs berth. This will be a big year for Penn State and head coach James Franklin.

In recent seasons the only missteps have come against the Michigan Wolverines and Ohio State Buckeyes. Penn State won’t play the former this year but have an early November showdown with Ohio State at Beaver Stadium. Perhaps the offense will be poised to test the Buckeyes’ defense under new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki.

For the first time in nine years, Penn State will open Big Ten play at home as they host the Illinois Fighting Illini on Sept. 28. This year’s whiteout game will take place on Nov. 9 when the Washington Huskies come to town for the first time. What a way to welcome them to the Big Ten.

The 2024 college football season is almost here, which means it is time to get ready to root for your UGA Bulldogs as they welcome the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns to the new-look SEC. Georgia won’t play the former this season but they have a Lone Star-sized showdown with the Horns in mid-October.

Before Georgia can put any energy into thinking about the Texas game, they kick off the season in Atlanta against the Clemson Tigers in the Aflac Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. After the home opener against Tennessee Tech, the Dawgs get into SEC play with a trip to Lexington to face the Kentucky Wildcats. Kirby Smart and company will have an open week before traveling to Tuscaloosa for their first matchup in the post-Nick Saban era.

As we roll into October, UGA will take on the Auburn Tigers in the “Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry” to kick off the month. On Oct. 19 they will head to Austin to face in the Horns. This could be a preview of the SEC title game should the preseason media poll predictions hold. Following the open week, the Dawgs have a date with the Florida Gators in Jacksonville.

Georgia will get tested as November continues with a road test against the Ole Miss Rebels before returning home to host the Tennessee Vols. This could be a historic season as UGA aims for a third national title in four seasons.

The 2024 college football season is almost here, which means it is time to get ready to root for your UCLA Bruins as they embark on a new journey as members of the new 18-team Big Ten Conference.

Deshaun Foster kicks off his head coaching career out west in Hawaii on Aug. 31. That isn’t a bad way to start your season with a trip to the Aloha State. After an early off week, they return home to host the Indiana Hoosiers in UCLA’s Big Ten debut before traveling to Baton Rouge to face the LSU Tigers. There likely won’t be any “sissy blue shirt” references this time around.

Following the Tigers matchup, the Bruins must face the Oregon Ducks and Penn State Nittany Lions in back-to-back weeks. The schedule won’t be any easier in November when UCLA faces the Iowa Hawkeyes, Washington Huskies, and USC Trojans in consecutive weeks before closing out the season against Fresno State.
