Top-2023 recruit calls Notre Dame ‘amazing program’

Is Notre Dame football elite? Not quite, but to a top-2023 recruit they are “amazing”.

Notre Dame fans who keep an extra-close eye on recruiting are familiar with Milton High School in Georgia as a 2022 recruiting class commitment, tight end Jack Nickel is a student there.

It’s a 2023 recruiting prospect from Milton that is in the news for Notre Dame however as top-ranked defensive end Lebbeus Overton recently had some very positive things to say about the Notre Dame football program.

Speaking to Mike Singer from BlueandGold.com (click for the full article, it’s worth your time), Overton offered the following:

“I’ve watched a lot of their games. I don’t know how to describe it; it’s just an amazing program. They have everything you need to be successful.”

Overton is rated as the nation’s top player according to the most recent 2023 individual rankings that were released by Rivals.  Overton also told Singer that Nickel is in his ear about attending Notre Dame:

“He’s been in my ear a lot,” Overton said. “That’s my guy; we’re close. I’m glad he’s at Notre Dame. It’s an amazing school, especially for tight ends. Ever since I got the offer, he’s been on me and trying to hype me up about it.”

It’s clearly a good sign for Notre Dame that the nation’s top-rated prospect has that to share, but it’s hardly a two-foot putt that Overton will eventually commit to the program.

It’s a good first step and positive news, but a lot of work remains for Notre Dame with the likes of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M just a few of those in pursuit of Overton.

Texas quarterback target Arch Manning named five-star prospect by Rivals

Rivals released their five-star ratings for the 2023 class, with Arch Manning coming in at No. 3 overall.

Steve Sarkisian is widely viewed as one of the greatest coaches in the country when it comes to quarterbacks. His lineage of NFL prospects dating back to his time as an assistant at USC is impressive. Tua Tagovailoa, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft, and Mac Jones, a presumed first-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft, were the two latest names placed on Sarkisian’s resume.

Now that he is the head coach at Texas, quarterbacks across the country have been intrigued by playing for Sarkisian. Five-star Maalik Murphy was the first example with his commitment in February. Another big name could be coming from the 2023 class in Arch Manning. Texas is squarely in the running for the New Orleans native.

Rivals released their initial five-star ratings for the 2023 class, with Manning coming in at No. 3 overall. Defensive end Lebbeus Overton and quarterback Malachi Nelson were the only two players rated ahead.

In an interview with 247Sports, Manning said his relationship with Coach Sarkisian goes back to when he was in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide will be a force in his recruitment, as long as Clemson, LSU, Ole Miss, and Tennessee.

Landing the five-star quarterback would bring a ton of momentum into the 2023 recruiting class, much like Quinn Ewers did when he originally committed. Texas already has a pledge from Rueben Owens, the No. 26 player according to 247Sports.

Status of current, future wide receiver room at Texas

Steve Sarkisian has talked about the wide receiver room more than any other position group on the roster.

One of the more disappointing position groups last season was the wide receivers. No one stepped up as a go-to for quarterback Sam Ehlinger despite all of the talent in the room.

The most infuriating part was the constant rotation. No matter the situation, down, distance, or scenario, Tom Herman switched out his receivers for whatever reason. His best pass-catchers at the time would be on the sidelines, leaving Ehlinger out dry.

Luckily, Steve Sarkisian will not hold those same ideologies. He will play his three or four best receivers, regardless of their position. On the depth chart, they will be labeled as X, Z, and H but Sarkisian is more than willing to play two H-receivers if it fits the formation better.

As we look into the future, wide receiver will be one of the most recruited positions by Andre Coleman and Sarkisian over the next few cycles. A near overhaul is needed. SEC-level speed and more elite blue-chip talents are needed in order for Texas to reach the next level.

Here is the status of the current and future of the Longhorns’ wide receiver room.
