20 Commanders players slated to become free agents in 2023

Daron Payne and Taylor Heinicke headline Washington’s list of free agents in 2023.

Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said 2023 would be a season in which his team would show growth and improvement. Rivera often referenced his time in Carolina, where he led the Panthers to a 12-4 record in his third year as head coach.

In Rivera’s first two seasons as Carolina’s head coach, he won a combined 13 games. In his first two seasons with Washington, he won 14 games.

How has Washington responded? The Commanders are 7-5-1 after 13 games and are on a bye week in Week 14. Washington began the season 1-4 but has won six of its past eight games and is in a prime position to make the NFC playoffs.

Whenever the season ends, the offseason will be critical for Rivera. There will be questions about the quarterback position. Will the Commanders go all-in on a rookie? Will Washington go with one of the options on the current roster or look for a veteran, such as Jimmy Garoppolo?

The Commanders have their own free agents to worry about, most important is defensive tackle Daron Payne. Payne is having a career season and is only 25 years old. Will Washington sign Payne to a long-term deal or apply the franchise tag?

In addition to Payne, quarterback Taylor Heinicke and linebacker Cole Holcomb are Washington’s other primary free agents. What happens to Heinicke in 2023? He’s certainly earned a raise — from someone. Holcomb was having another solid season before injuring his foot in Week 7. He has since undergone surgery and been placed on injured reserve.

The Commanders have 17 other free agents, according to Over the Cap. Here’s a look at Washington’s 20 free agents in 2023:

Few key Lions slated for free agency after the 2022 season

The Lions only have 3 players in the top 100 pending free agents for 2023

One of the more positive aspects of the Detroit Lions’ recent ascension up the NFL standings is how well-positioned the team is to keep the upward surge continuing long-term. The young Lions roster is geared to keep the core largely intact without losing hardly any key pieces heading into 2023.

The Lions have several players slated to hit free agency after this season ends. But only two of the pending free agents earned mention by PFF as one of the top five pending free agents at their respective positions. Wide receiver DJ Chark and right guard Evan Brown.

Those two are joined by running back Jamaal Williams as the only offensive starters with expiring contracts. Keep in mind that Williams shares that role with D’Andre Swift, while Brown was supposed to be the backup center instead of the starting right guard–though he’s played well enough to keep a starting gig.

On defense, there are four current starters playing out the end of their contracts:

  • LB Alex Anzalone
  • DT Isaiah Buggs
  • S DeShon Elliott
  • CB Will Harris

Cornerback Mike Hughes also plays quite a bit and started four games, though Hughes only played on special teams in the Week 13 win over Jacksonville. Kicker Michael Badgley, who has been excellent since taking over midseason, is also slated for free agency.

The Lions have contractual control over every other starter on both sides of the ball. Only Chark (53), Hughes (58) and Williams (85) earned places in the top 100 pending free agents from NFL Trade Rumors. That list probably needs to be updated with Williams as the top free agent talent in Detroit, but the broader point remains: the core of the Lions team will come back largely intact.

Even better, the Lions can augment that ample young talent with enough cap room to sign more impactful free agents than the current Lions who will be playing elsewhere in 2023. Detroit currently sits 12th in terms of available cap room entering 2023, per Over the Cap. If GM Brad Holmes wants to bring valuable players like Williams, Badgley or Elliott back — and they all very well could be — the team still has enough cap room and flexibility to bring in strong outside talent.

Ron Rivera reiterates desire to keep Daron Payne long term

Ron Rivera regrets being unable to keep both of his star defensive tackles in Carolina. He doesn’t want to repeat that scenario with Daron Payne

The Washington Commanders have the best defensive tackle duo in the NFL. Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne have combined for 13 sacks and 27 tackles for loss through 12 games this season.

In a few short months, Payne is scheduled to hit unrestricted free agency, meaning he could be elsewhere in 2023.

However, if it’s up to head coach Ron Rivera, Payne, like Allen, will be signing a long-term contract with the Commanders to stick around for several more seasons.

Multiple times this season, Rivera has made it clear where the Commanders stand with Payne: They want him back. Allen signed a four-year extension in July 2021 but was one year away from free agency when he signed his new deal.

Would Payne want to re-sign with Washington before he has a chance to hit free agency? And would the Commanders apply the franchise tag on Payne? That’s a dreaded phrase for Washington fans, as Kirk Cousins and Brandon Scherff played on the franchise tag for two years before leaving.

Payne isn’t Scherff or Cousins. He legitimately seems happy playing in Washington with his current teammates. He is having a career season and is just 25 years old, making him a prime candidate for a lucrative extension.

When Rivera was in Carolina, he had two excellent defensive tackles in Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short. Both were outstanding. Lotulelei was a first-round pick in 2013, while Short was a second-round pick in the same draft. Ultimately, Carolina chose to pay Short and allow Lotulelei to leave, something that still bothers Rivera.

“The big problem with it more than anything else is it’s gonna impact your linebackers, and it’s gonna impact all the way across,” Rivera said. “It really is because what happened was Star was that guy that would absorb the double teams and hold the point so your linebackers could run, and so your three-technique was typically singled up, and KK made a lot of plays. But when Star wanted, Star would take it over. I mean, that’s how good he was. We’re fortunate that we have a guy that, for the most part, in [DT] Jonathan [Allen] that is really good at both. And you have a guy in [DT] Daron [Payne] who’s really good at both. So we don’t have to always try and flip one to make one to one and the other one to three, which is what we did with Star. We said, ‘Hey, we’ll make him the one and KK will be the one that flips.’ And it turned out that they’re both just as equally as valuable. It’s the lesson we learned, and if I had all to do over again, I would’ve asked that if we could get ’em both signed.”

As for keeping Payne around, Rivera has made it clear where he stands.

Payne already has career highs in sacks and tackles for loss under new defensive line coach Jeff Zgonina. Washington’s defensive line is playing like the dominant group everyone expected when you spend four consecutive first-round picks on the same position group.

When Carolina re-signed Short in 2017, the Panthers first applied the franchise tag. However, he never played on the tag as he agreed to a five-year deal shortly after.

The Commanders are hoping for a similar outcome for Payne.

List of Texans heading into final year of their contracts in 2022

Here is a look at Houston Texans players who are entering the final year of their contracts in 2022.

The 2022 NFL season could the opportunity for the Houston Texans to shake the “rebuilding” tag that has stuck with them throughout the Nick Caserio era.

The hope is an improved defense and better weapons around second-year quarterback Davis Mills will provide optimism that contender status is right around the corner.

If the Texans exceed expectations, it will create a welcomed headache for Caserio: which players on expiring deals are worthy of contract extensions?

Detroit Lions who will be free agents after the 2022 NFL season

All the Detroit Lions players who will be free agents after the 2022 NFL season

One of the few constants in the NFL is change. Injuries, retirements and free agency for players equals considerable roster turnover every offseason. For the Detroit Lions, the last factor there could be a major factor following the 2022 season.

The Lions currently have 41 players whose contracts expire after next season. That’s nearly half the roster potentially heading for free agency.

Not all free agency is equal. Five of the players here will be restricted free agents (RFA), meaning the Lions have the ability to keep them in the den with a qualifying tender offer. Other teams can pay the tender price and acquire the player, though that is not a common occurrence in today’s NFL.

Several will be exclusive rights free agents, or ERFA. Those 13 players simply need to be given the NFL minimum salary by the Lions and they are locked in.

Detroit can also extend players before their contracts expire. With over $10 million in remaining salary cap room, a couple of the more prominent names here are definitely candidates to be taken off the list with new deals before the end of the year.

Bengals players currently slated for free agency in 2023

These Bengals will hit the open market next offseason.

The Cincinnati Bengals wrapped up offseason activities and currently sit on break before training camp.

Given the pause in proceedings for a brief bit of time, now is a good chance to look ahead at what might come next for the team.

Jessie Bates, for example, is currently one of the most notable Bengals names scheduled to hit the free-agent market next offseason (barring an extension with the team).

He’s not the only name on the pretty extensive list though. Here’s a look at each of the names set to be 2023 free agents after next season, including unrestricted, restricted and exclusive rights free agents.
