The Dallas Cowboys have plenty of offseason needs that will rise to the surface in short order. With their season likely set to expire  following the Week 17 game against Washington, Dallas has an unprecedented 24 free agents they’ll have to either re-sign or replace.

One former player may be interested in finding a role with the only team he’s suited up for. Wideout Dez Bryant responded to a fan inquiry by stating he’d be interested in joining back up with Dallas after sitting out all of 2018 and 2019 due to various ailments.

Bryant is currently the team’s all-time touchdown reception leader with 73, playing for Dallas from 2010 through 2017. He was released in free agency of 2018 and worked to build his health back up. During the season, he signed with the New Orleans Saints, but tore his achilles in a Friday practice before making his debut. He sat out this year but has spent it regularly engaged on Twitter while working out diligently to prepare for a comeback.

Would Dallas be interested in bringing Bryant back? As he mentions in the tweet, he’s been one of the best red-zone threats the NFL has seen. It certainly would be some reunion after the way he and the team parted ways.

Texas offers 2020 four star running back

After securing Bijan Robinson, Texas will have some depth at RB. However, they are still trying to sign in the late February signing window.

After securing five-star Bijan Robinson in the 2020 class, Texas is finally going to have some depth at the running back position. That does not mean they will stop recruiting at the position though, as they are still looking for players to sign in the February signing window. Losing all-purpose back Ty Jordan to Utah, the Longhorns need another running back commit.

Texas has started to find a replacement and has started by offering four-star Jahmyr Gibbs out of Dalton, GA. Listed at 5 feet 11 inches, the running back is the ninth-ranked prospect at his position in the country. Currently committed to Georgia Tech, Gibbs has yet to sign his letter of intent for the early signing period.

Iowa State is the only other Big 12 school to offer Gibbs, but the Longhorns face competition from SEC schools like Alabama, LSU, and Florida. If Gibbs were to sign with Texas, the running back room would be full of four and five star talent, waiting to burst on to the scene in the Big 12.

2020 NFL salary cap projected to be between $197 and $201 million

The salary cap in the NFL is expected to jump between $197 and $201 million in 2020. Where does that put the Houston Texans?

The NFL salary cap is expected to rise between $197 and $201 million in 2020.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the climb in salary cap is the seventh consecutive season the salary cap has increased $10 million per club.

The Houston Texans are expected to have $145 million in salaries in 2020 with defensive end J.J. Watt, receiver DeAndre Hopkins, and left tackle Laremy Tunsil earning the most at $15 million, $14 million, and $10.4 million, according to Over the Cap.

Going off of Over the Cap’s $200 million projection, the Texans would have the seventh-highest salary cap space in 2020, which would give them the ability to start talking about an extension for quarterback Deshaun Watson, who is still on his rookie deal.

The Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, has been the center of discussion among the college football community, and NFL fan bases.

After suffering his season-ending hip injury, and the accompanied surgery, no one was too sure what the future would hold for the 2019 Heisman finalist.

He was at one point considered a lock to be the No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2020 draft, but since his 2019 season was plagued with injuries, he is now projected by some to be selected later in the first round.

The idea of him staying in Tuscaloosa for his final year of eligibility has also been floating around.

In an interview with Kirk Herbstreit of ESPN, earlier this week, Tagovailoa admitted that he has not yet made a decision on whether he will forego his senior season to enter the NFL draft.

The quarterback’s mind may now be made up as he is set to meet with the media on Dec. 5.

The subject of this meeting with the media has not been released, but there is a good chance that he will be announcing his decision on what his plan is for next season.

Roll Tide Wire will keep you updated on all things Alabama football, including Tagoavailoa’s decision.

2020 Food Trends

The Food Channel has released its 2020 Food Trends predictions–a top ten of what’s coming up next.

The Food Channel presents its 2020 Food Trends

It’s time again—every year for the past 31 years The Food Channel® has released a food trends report. We keep it simple, since there are a lot of reports out there with varying opinions, but we’ve also tracked this long enough to see the majority of our forecasts become reality.

Just take a look at past reports and you’ll see we called out some of the top things you’ve heard about this year. We’ve predicted the rise of cannabis in food, the interest in regional ethnic from places such as Africa and Appalachia, the rise of seafood and the importance of delivery. We’ve talked about probiotics and philanthropy and pets. We predicted restaurants would begin investing in their employees, and have seen better pay and tuition programs just within the last year. There’s been a lot over the past 31 years!

With that said, let’s take a look at our 2020 forecast of the Top Ten Trends in Food. The information is based on research conducted by the behavior science company CultureWaves® and identifies some of the significant shifts in behavior expected in 2020.

  1. CBD update. We’ve identified this before and a lot of innovation in food and beverage has been taking place, even with the legislative aspects up in the air. Some chefs have ventured out anyway—just look at the number of cannabis cafes that have opened in cities from Houston to Portland. In 2020 the legislative issues will likely come to a head and open the door to even more innovation. In fact, this top trend could be simply about regulation in general, as salt, sugar, CBD are only some of the things we’re going to find legislators pinning their attention on, under a “health of the nation” halo. If you thought food and politics were separate, think again.
  2. Plant-based continues to grow (pardon the pun). It’s inevitable as people search for a lifestyle that is easy to adopt and maintain. Beyond the health and diet aspects that come with healthier eating, though, will be a new transparency into the ingredients that may make people pause, as they learn plant-based doesn’t necessarily mean lower-calorie, or (dare we say it) healthy. Healthier may be enough, but the phrase “lab-grown” is going to give some people reason to think this through.
  3. The rise of data. We get that we are data nerds. Part of what we do is analyzing data that tells us how people are behaving, and why they are making the choices they make. The companies that manufacture the food products you buy rely on data to make their choices, too. They know a lot about the aggregated “you,” and they want to know even more. Sophisticated data exists that goes beyond demographics and into behavior—and more and more companies are learning what counts in all the data. So, if you find Twinkies cereal on your shelf, you’ll know the data showed people would buy it.
  4. Customer-led innovation. The consumer is in charge more than ever before. You thought you had a role in a restaurant’s success thanks to your online review? Well, try giving them one of your recipes. Some restaurants are now incorporating that level of personalization into their strategy, and we expect to see more of it. It just makes sense that now that social media opened up the conversation, we’d find more ways to learn from each other and create our own community. Restaurants are adopting an “if you can’t beat them, join them” mentality and it probably bodes well for future success.
  5. Waste and sustainability. Food waste and disposable product waste go hand-in-hand, and while you can still get your to-go box in a pretty package with a bow, you can also find more recycling and biodegradable options than ever. Roadie, one of the many new delivery services, and Goodr, a real-time “food rescue “app (incidentally, built on blockchain, which we called out in last year’s report) have one of the more interesting innovations. Their app allows businesses and restaurants to donate surplus food to people and local charities in need. With the food packaging demand from delivery, and the disappointment in paper straws, this subject deserves a lot of attention and innovation.
  6. Customer service. We are among those who have ranted for years about restaurant customer service, or lack thereof…but there is a new effort underfoot. Now that restaurants know more about you (see data, above), they understand how important it is to close the loop when you have a problem. Domino’s offers a guarantee, and that’s just the tip of innovation. Behind the customer-facing part comes a big investment into employee retention and training. Shake Shack is testing a four day work week; Chick-fil-a and others are doing tuition reimbursement, and Hopdoddy is partnering to get its workers culinary degrees and certifications. A higher level of training has been shown to lead to a higher level of responsive service, so it’s a no brainer. Still, it took them long enough.
  7. The new sensitivity. #metoo woke a lot of people up, and shook up a number of policies that had grown dusty on the shelf. We’re watching the unintended effect, where the genders are just avoiding each other for the time being, but we believe 2020 will be spent reaching an understanding of how to work well with others. Respect will be part of the curriculum, along with the type of zero tolerance policies demonstrated by McDonald’s and other companies already. We may just be hopeful, but the conversation is well underway.
  8. Options. Oatmeal flour, almond flour, coconut flour. Oat milk, soy milk, almond milk. We have more specialty and organic options than ever before, and the prices are doable for those willing to pay a little extra.
  9. We’re always asked after we publish these reports: What are the hot flavors going to be? So, let’s just call them out. Marshmallow is showing a lot of innovation, both in flavored marshmallow but also in how marshmallow is incorporated into menu items. Maple is still showing up, as is mango, persimmon, ginger, and curry. Things that aren’t technically even flavors are now flavors, like churro-flavored. Global is going to play a huge role, and it’s a roll of the dice which new words we’ll learn— cotija, dukkah, and epazote are just early in the alphabet. Sambal, tajin, ube, vindaloo, watercress, xaolongbao bring up the rear (although we have plenty more). We’re also watching the food and flavors from Brazil and Portugal, and the regional influences rising from all areas of Asia and the Middle East. American flavors are getting noticed too; in fact, where it used to be North, South, East and West, expect flavor to be identified at least at the state level, if not even deeper—so more New Orleans, and less general South, or even Louisiana. Even Colorado is getting into the game with Colorado-cured becoming an interesting new standard.
  10. Finally, here’s one for the dreamers. Just as our nation is conquering putting flavor into plant-based foods, it’s looking at space food to see if it can become more viable as a way to feed the world—the one on this planet. This is exciting young chefs, as well as those who are working to solve the food sustainability issues, and is something we expect to see talked about more.

We have more, but ten is enough to feed your interest for this year. To read more about trends throughout the next year from our CultureWaves partner, check out the weekly blog at https://whysdom.com/blog/.

The definitive ranking of the NBA’s newly unveiled “City” jerseys

The good, the bad and the “what on earth were y’all thinking?”

The NBA’s “City” edition jerseys are back. Most of the league’s alternates for the 2020 season have been revealed to this point and, just like every year,  some are pretty fly, some are alright and some are hot garbage. We’re here to walk you through all of the ones that have dropped so far.

Being honest and truthful is a major part of our journalistic ethos. Expect nothing less here. What that means is that if your team’s jersey is really, really bad, expect it to get roasted.

With all that out of the way, let’s see what we have here.

These are pretty icy

Atlanta Hawks

You can’t spell icy without Ice Trae. Well, you actually can, but you get my point. These jerseys are clean — they do just enough. And they rep Georgia really well. I’m sold.

Denver Nuggets

The Denver mountain skyline with the rainbow background is perfection no matter what color jersey it’s on. This is an amazing flip.

Minnesota Timberwolves

That baby blue is so clean and the MSP font is perfect. The key to a great jersey is not doing too much and the Timberwolves clearly get that.

Portland Trail Blazers

Look. Anytime you throw “Rip City” or PDX on something related to Portland it’s going to work. Sorry. Those are the rules.

The vision is solid

Washington Wizards

Nike somehow managed to bring the Stars and Stripes Adidas design back from a few seasons ago. These are pretty clean. As the resident Wizards fan here, I approve.

Toronto Raptors

It’s hard to tell if this is great because of the OVO design or because of the fact that Drake’s long lost twin, Fred Van Vleet, is the one wearing the OVO designed jersey. Either way, they pass.

Phoenix Suns

The shorts are actually what really set this one apart. Everything else is super minimalist and then all of a sudden there’s a huge splash of Phoenix Sun on the leg. It’s brilliant.

Philadelphia 76ers

That cracked Liberty Bell on the shorts is an amazing touch on an otherwise clean jersey. They’re good.

Memphis Grizzlies

Alright, alright. Another retro. We’ve seen this before, but the effort is definitely respectable. Especially since the Grizzlies OG uniforms are easily some of the best ever.

Cleveland Cavaliers

These are solid. They’re super similar to the uniforms the Cavaliers wore during LeBron James’ last run in Cleveland, so they definitely get points for that wrinkle.

Chicago Bulls

These almost fell down to the “fine” tier but when I saw these I couldn’t help but think about how they’d look with the new Fearless Jordan 1 that recently dropped. So good.

Indiana Pacers

These actually WERE in the “fine” category but were moved up. The checkered flag was a bit jarring at first, but it’s honestly a great touch.

Yeah, these are just fine

LA Clippers

The font looks like it came straight out of Grand Theft Auto 5. It’s a fine jersey, but it’s not very creative at all. We’ve seen this before. It’s almost like they took the Enemies’ Big 3 jerseys and slapped Los Angeles on them.

LA Lakers

Shaq apparently designed these and it definitely looks like it. It’s more about the history of the Lakers than the actual design. It’s fine but yawn.

Orlando Magic

Really like the touch of orange that kind of represents Florida well. It just doesn’t look great on that black.

Houston Rockets

This jersey is a bit boring, but it does a great job of repping Houston with the H-Town on the chest. It also gives a tiny nod to the history of the city and the Johnson Space Center.

Uh, maybe next year

Brooklyn Nets

https://twitter.com/BrooklynNets/status/1197676066703368192

Alright, this take is a bit hot. But the Nets have kind of overplayed the whole Biggie and Coogi thing. Don’t get it twisted — Big is great. But he’s not the only rapper from Brooklyn.

Utah Jazz

Trying again next year means giving us something that is actually different next year. It looks like they just carried over last year’s jerseys to now.

Sacramento kings

Sactown is just a terrible nickname for a town. Wearing it on a jersey is just asking for jokes. We’re already underway and we haven’t even seen these on court yet.

Oklahoma City Thunder

This is exactly what the Hawks’ Peachtree jersey would look like if it were awful.

Detroit Pistons

The road lines streaking down the middle of the jersey just throw me off. Classic example of doing way too much.

Milwaukee Bucks

Milwaukee just, generally, needs a better city nickname because “Cream City” definitely is not it. I’m not super mad at these, but they can do better.

BURN THEM FOREVER

Boston Celtics

Listen, hating on the designer here is hard. The Celtics colors, in general, are just old and boring. But, fam. Green with a gold trim? That’s a no-no.

Dallas Mavericks

The Mavs deserve to be relegated off of this alone. They’re really going to make Luka Doncic wear this. Unbelievable. I’m not going in again. I’ve already done it. Just get these out of here. Please.

4 free agents in 2020 Chiefs should consider re-signing

A look at four unrestricted free agents that I think the Kansas City front office should consider re-signing.

The Kansas City Chiefs have 18 players scheduled to become unrestricted free agents this offseason. Several of those players are new to the team during the 2019 season. While the Chiefs won’t have a whole lot of money to play with in free agency this season, they should look to bring back a few standout performers.

Here’s a look at four players that I think the Kansas City front office should consider re-signing:

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

DE Emmanuel Ogbah

One of the biggest surprises for the Chiefs this season was edge rusher Emmanuel Ogbah. He came over to the Chiefs in a trade from the Browns for safety Eric Murray and no one really expected much. Quickly, Ogbah established himself as one of the Chiefs’ best pass rushers.

Before tearing his right pectoral muscle, Ogbah was the Chiefs’ sack leader with 5.5 sacks. He also was stout against the run, leading all Chiefs defenders in run-stop percentage when he was injured according to PFF. Keep in mind he did all of this with only four starts over the course of ten games.

The only saving grace about Ogbah’s torn pectoral muscle is that it might lower his asking price in free agency. If the Chiefs can convince Ogbah to come back and play in this system, on a one-year team-friendly contract, that could be a win-win situation. Ogbah gets to thrive in the Chiefs defense once again ahead of a big payday and the Chiefs get a productive player back for another year.

These 4 Chiefs players deserve their first Pro Bowl appearance in 2020

The Kansas City Chiefs could have several first time Pro Bowl selections in 2020.

Fan voting for the 2020 Pro Bowl is already underway and concludes on Thursday, Dec. 12. You can vote for the best-of-the-best in the NFL as many times as you please over at NFL.com/ProBowlVote. Rosters will be revealed on Tuesday, Dec. 17 live on a special NFL Network show. The 2020 Pro Bowl will take place on Sunday, January 26 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida a week ahead of Super Bowl LIV.

There are plenty of Chiefs players deserving of being selected for the first Pro Bowl of their career. Some of these players have been vying for a Pro Bowl selection for several years now, while others look to be rising stars in the NFL game. Below you’ll find four Chiefs players that should be selected for the first time in 2020:

Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports

RT Mitchell Schwartz

There’s perhaps no member of the Chiefs more deserving of a trip to the Pro Bowl than veteran right tackle Mitchell Schwartz. He was deserving last season but only received the nod as an alternate. The injuries along the offensive line for Kansas City this season have only magnified how great Schwartz is.

Schwartz has yet to allow a sack on the season and has only had two penalties called on him. His dominance in pass protection isn’t his only asset, though, Schwartz is also a force in the ground game. Some of the best runs of the season in Kansas City have been sprung by Schwartz. Just look to the blocking he did on the 91-yard touchdown run from RB Damien Williams in Week 9.

Before suffering an injury in Week 10, Schwartz had a snap streak of 7,894, spanning the course of seven-and-a-half NFL seasons. He’d never missed a snap in his entire career. Schwartz returned to the game three plays later, proving once again that he’s indestructible and one of the most impressive offensive linemen in football today.
