Jags waive TE Tim Tebow among other roster moves

Tim Tebow’s return to the NFL has come to an end for now as the Jags waived him Tuesday. Four other roster moves were made, too.

With the Jacksonville Jaguars having to trim their roster down to 85 players, they started their morning making five transactions to get them there. Among them was the release of former first-round quarterback turned tight end, Tim Tebow.

The other moves the Jags made were as follows:

Tebow made his NFL return and joined the Jags after last being on a team on May 20 after he retired from Class AAA baseball for the New York Mets. He had last been with the NFL in 2015 with the Philadelphia Eagles but was waived before the regular season. Tebow, who was a first-round pick in 2010 for the Denver Broncos, was attempting to make a regular season roster for the first time since 2012.

In Saturday’s preseason game against the Cleveland Browns, Tebow didn’t register any stats but appeared to be targeted once for a pass that receiver Tavon Austin ended up snagging and advancing up the field. He also had a rough night with the blocking aspect of the game and was a player who was going to need a lot of time.

Cornerback DJ Daniel, who was waived, joined the team as an undrafted free agent after the 2021 NFL Draft out of Georgia. He only saw four snaps in the Jags preseason opener.

Both Josh Imatorbhebhe and Tim Jones, who are receivers, didn’t play in Saturday’s game due to injuries. Meanwhile, Daniel Ross sustained an ankle injury in the fourth quarter of the game after sustaining a chop block from a Browns offensive lineman.

NFLPA tells players preseason games have been canceled

The 2020 NFL preseason slate has been wiped out due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

There will be no preseason games leading into the kickoff of the 2020 NFL season due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

That was the news the NFLPA delivered to its players Tuesday along with some other information on their call.

NFL.com reported:

The union said it has a general agreement with the league on voluntary and high-risk opt-out possibilities, and another general agreement on a compensatory stipend in the event games are lost due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The main economics still need to be hashed out between the two sides, and the details for the general agreements also need to be finalized, but the two sides have agreed on the concept.

This will ramp up the importance of practice for players looking to earn a spot on regular-season rosters. Coaching staffs will have to make decisions only on what they see and without any game action, which should make things extremely interesting and tense in camps.

The fans won’t miss attending preseason games since most skip the contests anyway. They are dominated by empty seats.

With NFL offering to skip the entire preseason schedule, how will Eagles rookies and undrafted free agents be impacted?

NFL offers players the option to skip entire preseason game schedule

In a move that has been decades in the making, the NFL has proposed eliminating the slate of preseason games for all 32 teams amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The move was suggested to help placate the player’s request to have more acclimation time during the training camp period after missing all the offseason team activities and minicamps.

The move could benefit certain Eagles veterans but would greatly impact select rookies and undrafted free agents who are looking to make the team. The NFL has also discussed reduced training camp roster, making it almost impossible for anyone but drafted rookies to make the 53 man roster and that could cause a conundrum for skill position and offensive linemen drafted in the later rounds.

A guy like Jalen Reagor is a special talent and should have no problems adjusting to the speed of NFL games, whereas players like Quez Watkins and John Hightower will have to be on point from the start of on-field workouts with the Eagles returning DeSean Jackson, Alshon Jeffery, JJ Arcega-Whiteside, and the newest addition Marquise Goodwin.

Undrafted free agents like Michael Warren (RB), Grayland Arnold (DB), Noah Togiai (TE), Luke Juriga (OL), Dante Olson (LB) and Raekwon Williams (DL) were considered locks to make the team or at least the practice squad, but the loss of preseason film could be detrimental to those players and a handful of others.

Report: NFL offers NFLPA to play 0 preseason games

The NFL has offered its players to skip all preseason games in 2020, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Well, the NFL preseason started at four games, somehow skipped the possibility of three, then went to maybe two, one and now the league is offering its players the opportunity to play zero preseason games.

This from ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

This would make for interesting training camps as draft choices, undrafted free agents, and others battle for spots on rosters.

Also, imagine being the Bengals and having to throw Joe Burrow right into the fire — assuming they sign the No. 1 overall pick in time — against the Los Angeles Chargers’ and Cleveland Browns’ defenses in the first two weeks of the season.

The veterans have been seeing less and less action in preseason games over the years so it wouldn’t impact that group as much. However, those fighting for jobs would have to bring it every day in every way at practice.

Report: NFLPA votes to skip NFL preseason

The NFL might cancel the entire preseason.

[jwplayer uipp5LSQ-ThvAeFxT]

In a unanimous vote on Friday, the NFLPA board has voted to skip the entire 2020 preseason. This is according to NFL reporter Adam Schefter. This has not been announced officially by the NFL yet and there has been no official statement from the NFLPA.

If the NFL opts to completely skip the preseason and go straight from training camp to the regular season, it will put all NFL coaching staffs into precarious positions. Fortunately, the playing field will remain level since all teams have the same limitations to navigate leading up to the regular season.

What do you think? Will the NFL just not bother with the preseason and what kinds of problems will this create? Let us know.

Report: Jags will only have 2 preseason games in 2020

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ preseason has been cut to just two games and the team will just now have contests against Tampa Bay and Washington.

As expected, the NFL won’t be having a full preseason due to COVID-19 being a huge issue in the United States. Instead, they will have half of the usual amount and will be sticking to just two preseason contests per team.

The league will be doing without Week 1 and Week 4 this preseason. For the Jacksonville Jaguars, that eliminates their away game against the Carolina Panthers and their home game against the Atlanta Falcons. Now, they will just make a brief trip to Tampa Bay to play the Bucs Week 2 while the Washington Redskins will travel to them for a home game at TIAA Bank Field Week 3.

The Jags will have to report to training camp by July, 28, which will give them over three weeks before their preseason game in Tampa (Aug. 22). Their first regular season game will occur a little over three weeks later at home against the Indianapolis Colts (Sept. 13).

REPORT: NFL to abbreviate preseason schedule

According to sources of ESPN, the NFL will be announcing the elimination of two preseason games in 2020.

As anticipated, the NFL will be abbreviating the preseason. According to a source of ESPN’s Kevin Seifert, the league has shortened the preseason to just two games.

In addition to concerns surrounding COVID-19, players will need more time to get acclimated to physical football activity before they play full-on games.

The first week of the preseason was initially scheduled to start August 13. It will now be pushed back to the third week in August. The second week is scheduled for August 27 to 31. As it stands now, each team will play one home game and one away.

Training camp is currently still on schedule to begin July 28.

Philadelphia Eagles to have preseason schedule reduced from 4 games to 2 amid the coronavirus pandemic

NFL to remove Week 1 and Week 4 from the preseason schedule

In a move that should allow for a longer training camp, while keeping all 32 NFL teams safe, the league will reportedly reduce the preseason schedule to just two games.

The league will reportedly eliminate the first and final week (4) of the preseason schedule according to ESPN.com, via Pro Football Talk.

Each team will reportedly receive one home and one away preseason game.

NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith discussed the possibility with Mackenzie Salmon of USA Today.

The Eagles were scheduled to open the preseason on Aug. 13 in Indianapolis, with the first home preseason game scheduled for Aug. 27 against the Patriots.

The regular-season home opener is Sept. 20 against the Rams.

NFL could shorten upcoming preseason

According to NFL Network, the league could shorten the upcoming 2020 preseason schedule.

The NFL is still of the belief that the 2020 regular season will go on as expected, and already planned for, in September. But it appears the preseason may not.

Teams across the league have released schedules for their preseason exhibition games, but those reportedly might not go on as expected. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the NFL and players union are talking about potentially trimming the preseason slate due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic:

The NFL has already had numerous changes to their current offseason due to the pandemic, but in all likelihood, many players may not mind having less exhibition games to account for. That’ll help avoid injury.

However, players might see the least amount of actual football in league history this offseason prior to games counting in the regular season. The league recently sent a memo to teams in regard to getting players back in the building for workouts. In that, it was stressed the teams should conduct social distancing and virtual meetings and practices, when possible. The NFL and NFLPA have yet to agree on a time frame for players to return to facilities, but that slate of rules isn’t exactly anything that reminds one of a physical sport.

In addition, the league and players could use this opportunity to take a look into the future as well. The latest CBA agreement calls for an addition of a 17th regular season game starting next year, along with a shortening of the preseason. Teams could be getting a head start on prepping for an offseason with a shorter preseason in the coming weeks.
