2021 Jaguars roster cuts: Tracking Jacksonville’s moves on first cutdown day

Jacksonville had to cut its roster from 90 players to 85 on Tuesday, with the most notable casualty being Tim Tebow.

On Tuesday, Jacksonville had to make the first round of preseason cuts, bringing their roster down from 90 players to 85. The most notable casualty of the group was tight end, Tim Tebow, the former Heisman-winning quarterback turned professional baseball player who was attempting a return to the NFL.

Jacksonville has two more roster cutdown days before it gets down to the final 53-man roster. It must cut down from 85 to 80 on Aug. 24 before going all the way down to 53 a week later. That final cut of 27 players will be when the bulk of the notable cuts will occur.

Still, here’s a rundown of each player the Jags let go following the preseason opener.

Jags waive TE Tim Tebow among other roster moves

Tim Tebow’s return to the NFL has come to an end for now as the Jags waived him Tuesday. Four other roster moves were made, too.

With the Jacksonville Jaguars having to trim their roster down to 85 players, they started their morning making five transactions to get them there. Among them was the release of former first-round quarterback turned tight end, Tim Tebow.

The other moves the Jags made were as follows:

Tebow made his NFL return and joined the Jags after last being on a team on May 20 after he retired from Class AAA baseball for the New York Mets. He had last been with the NFL in 2015 with the Philadelphia Eagles but was waived before the regular season. Tebow, who was a first-round pick in 2010 for the Denver Broncos, was attempting to make a regular season roster for the first time since 2012.

In Saturday’s preseason game against the Cleveland Browns, Tebow didn’t register any stats but appeared to be targeted once for a pass that receiver Tavon Austin ended up snagging and advancing up the field. He also had a rough night with the blocking aspect of the game and was a player who was going to need a lot of time.

Cornerback DJ Daniel, who was waived, joined the team as an undrafted free agent after the 2021 NFL Draft out of Georgia. He only saw four snaps in the Jags preseason opener.

Both Josh Imatorbhebhe and Tim Jones, who are receivers, didn’t play in Saturday’s game due to injuries. Meanwhile, Daniel Ross sustained an ankle injury in the fourth quarter of the game after sustaining a chop block from a Browns offensive lineman.

Predicting the first 5 cuts for the Jags after their preseason opener vs. Browns

The Jags unfortunately have until Tuesday at 4 PM EST to make five cuts and file their roster down to 85. Here are five players we believe may be considered during these tough decisions.

With the Jacksonville Jaguars taking the field for their first preseason game Saturday, Urban Meyer and his staff will now have the tough and unfortunate task of narrowing the roster down to 85 (five cuts required) by Tuesday’s mandated deadline at 4 PM EST. There will also be a deadline before Tuesday, Aug. 24 (five more cuts will be required), then eventually, on Tuesday, Aug. 31, the roster will need to be trimmed down to the final 53 players.

That said, here are our predictions for the first wave of cuts:

Jags officially bring back DT Daniel Ross

After visiting the Jags Thursday, Daniel Ross will be re-joining the team and has signed a contract with them.

After visiting the Jacksonville Jaguars Thursday, defensive tackle Daniel Ross is returning to the team. The organization announced that they came to terms with Ross on Friday, giving the team another defensive lineman to come in and compete for a roster spot in training camp.

Ross, 28, played for the Jags last season after being claimed off waivers in December. Prior to his arrival in Jacksonville, he spent time on the Las Vegas Raiders’ (2020) and Dallas Cowboys’ (2017-18) active rosters. Between his time with all three aforementioned teams, he garnered 27 tackles, two sacks, and two fumble recoveries, while playing in 21 games.

Before being able to be a part of any NFL active roster, Ross was a practice squad player for the Houston Texans, Detroit Lions, and Kansas City Chiefs, respectively. He also spent time in the Canadian Football League and played for both the Edmonton Eskimos and Saskatchewan Roughriders.

DT Daniel Ross visits Jaguars

After spending time with the team last season, defensive tackle Daniel Ross could be re-joining the Jacksonville Jaguars down the road. According the NFL’s transaction wire, he visited the team Thursday.

Ross, 28, joined the Jags on Dec. 8 after he was claimed off waivers. He went on to play in two games for the team and accumulated two assisted tackles and a solo tackle, which was a tackle for loss. Prior, he played with the Las Vegas Raiders (2020) and Dallas Cowboys (2017-19). After spending  time in the Canadian Football League, he ended up going to the Houston Texans as an undrafted player in 2017. He spent a brief stint on their practice squad, as well as those of the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs.

If signed by the Jags, he will enter his second stint with the team with 27 combined tackles and two sacks. With all the additions made to the defensive line, he’d be a solid player to add for preseason reps, and if he can make the most of them, he could earn a spot on the practice squad.

Jaguars, Ravens release inactives list for Week 15’s game

Former Jaguars DL Calais Campbell won’t be suiting up Week 15 to take on his old team.

The Jacksonville Jaguars and Baltimore Ravens have released their lists of inactives for Sunday’s game, and for Baltimore, there are several notables within their group of seven.

Former Jaguar Calais Campbell won’t be suiting up Sunday after he was ruled questionable Friday with a calf injury. They also ruled out to of their veteran corners in Jimmy Smith (ruled out on the final injury report) and Marcus Peters with ribs/shoulder and calf injuries, respectively.

On offense, the Ravens listed running back Mark Ingram as a healthy scratch. However, his absence could be because the Ravens are looking to rest him down the stretch.

The Jags’ list of inactives was the same as it’s been the last few weeks, although cornerback Luq Barcoo surfaced on it when the argument could be made that he’d be better off active as the Jags have injuries in the secondary. The team already ruled out starting cornerback Sidney Jones IV (Achilles) Friday, so Barcoo would’ve provided them with a player who has started this season.

With Jones out, the Jags appear to be rolling with Chris Claybrooks and Tre Herndon as their starting corners, while Josiah Scott will handle the duties at Nickelback. The Jags also activated cornerback Quenton Meeks from their practice squad.

Cowboys lose yet another defender to Las Vegas Raiders, Marinelli

After three seasons in Dallas, Daniel Ross is headed to Las Vegas to reunite with Rod Marinelli on the Raiders’ defensive line.

Another Dallas player has defected to the Las Vegas desert. Following in the footsteps of Jason Witten, Maliek Collins, and Jeff Heath, defensive tackle Daniel Ross is the fourth ex-Cowboy expected to sign with coach Jon Gruden and the Raiders.

Ross will be reunited with the Raiders’ new defensive line coach, Rod Marinelli. It will be the 70-year-old Marinelli’s first year in Las Vegas after seven years on the sidelines in Dallas.

Ross, who went undrafted out of Northeast Mississippi Community College, spent two seasons in the Canadian Football League before bouncing around the practice squads in Houston, Detroit, and Kansas City. He joined the Cowboys in November 2017, when Ezekiel Elliott’s suspension opened up a spot on Dallas’s active roster.

In 16 games as a Cowboy in 2017 and 2018, the 27-year-old Ross logged 19 combined tackles, two sacks, two fumbles recoveries, and a forced fumble. He sat out 2019 on injured reserve with a shoulder ailment. In November, Ross was arrested for possession of marijuana and a weapons charge.

Ross did not receive a restricted tender offer from the Cowboys, as the team’s revamping of the interior defensive line continues. Free agent nose tackle Dontari Poe and defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, both most recently with the Panthers, were signed by the club in recent days.
